Tee hee.

Still, this morning's leaderboard makes me feel a bit out of my depth. I was
only 2 strokes behind last night, but now Ton's shot an eagle and a couple
of birdies to leave me 6 off the pace. I might be worth a punt at 50-1 if
you fancy backing an outsider, but don't accept any shorter odds. :-)

This is Henman's 8th Wimbledon, and he's only lost 7 matches. BBC, 2/Jul/01

Isn't listing the number of [^\w\s] a little too big a hint? For
example, it might have given away the technique for TPR(0,0) since the
winners had so many \w characters. Maybe the leaderboard should just
silently sort the ties.

52 strokes (matched 23) for Ton.
52 strokes (matched 23) for Rick.
52 strokes (matched 27) for BoB.

The leaderboard is to display someone first, that was Rick. But there is a
tie, since they have the same number of [^\w\s] chars.
Next tournaments will display the tie-breaker score.

In that case, revealing the whole scoring is too big a hint.
Normally, golf contest reveal the score for the _total_ of the holes, but as
there's only one course, total score is also the score of the hole.

And that's not because the score and tie-breaker score is the same that
solutions are the same. Simply, there is no way to untie them according to
the rules.
Given two solutions with the same score and tie breaker score, imagine how
frustrating it would be if one of the golfer gains one char and not the
other... But if the solutions are different, there may be absolutely no way
for the second golfer to shave one more char...

one could say so, yes.
so I propose the following compromise:
if you have persons A, B, C and D at score X, and tie-scores, say 8, 5, 5, 3
respectively, display them as:

1 A
2 B
  C
4 D

This way at least everyone knows if he should look further or not, and
you don't tell the world the tie-scores

suggest to get rid of tie-breaker(was Re: BoB)

2002-03-05 Thread xfgh hfgh

I don't understand why there has to be a tie-breaker?

In the course, some may be good at chipping, some may be good
at pudding, various styles display the beauty of golfing.

In Perl, some may be good at algorithm, some may be good
at regex, some may know all about POSIX:), thusly the
beauty of TMTOWTDI.

I also don't think it's easy to change tie-breaker rules
every round with overall fairness. After all, at beginning
of the competition no one knows the best solution (may apply
even at very end).

So I say, let tie be there, please.

Yesterday, when I posted BoB's solution, I was quite proud of myself. But
this morning, when waking up, I see that both Ton Hospel and Rick Klement got
to 52... Anyway, BoB still leads the course thanks to the tie-breaking rule.
But I don't think I can go much further...
Poor BoB, whose first place is always stolen near the end of the game. Maybe
we should close the game now. :)

Well done, shark Rick too! I see you got to 52
Since Rick is ahead of Ton on the leaderboard are we to assume
that he is ahead on the tie-break rule? Perhaps the leaderboard
could be updated with the tie break score too? (ie the
'matched 123 [^\w\s]' score from running the test program)

Since my solution is as dry as a raisin, there being no hope of
squeezing out an extra character, it is time for some extreme
measures Normally, in this situation, I take home the Camel
and read it from cover to cover for inspiration This time, I
will instead try reading some pornography from cover to cover
I need to think dirtier to get to 52
