While the method he uses is functional it doesn't really cut it for today's computing environment now that 64 bit Windows uses the Program Files (x86) folder rather than the older Program Files folder and that just confuses people to no end. So a new installer that would pick the correct one would be an improvement, and I would like to repackage the games to have a more updated installer. So perhaps we can work on something like that besides just mirroring them as is. Also I heard you live three hours away from Chardon, and if you can it would be nice to have another VB 6 dev take control of his source. While I could probably do it I am pretty busy and have a lot on my plate and wouldn't be up to taking on that many games any time soon. Plus while I know VB 6 it has never been my forte anyway. Hi Darren, I had not heard this. Can you give me more details on this installer project? I'm interested to know if the person is using a qualified installation tool like Inno Setup, Microsoft Setup Installer, or just repacking the games using Winzip Self-Extractor like Jim did. Moreover I'm not sure creating a single mega installer is a good idea. I can understand why someone might want all the games to get installed at once, but I do think it should be broken down into individual games or perhaps separate packages such as the sports pack containing sports games, the board game pack containing board games, etc. There are ways of making the installation process more selective than just making everyone install everything at one go. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Mattias, While Philip may be a Jaws user I don't think this situation with Q9 has arisen because he is a Jaws lover. I don't think that had anything to do with it. As Philip explained on the Audiogames.net Forum it was a simple business arrangement where Brian Hartgen offered him an unspecified amount of money to buy the rights to Q9 and Philip sold the game to him. Being a Jaws lover had nothing to do with it. If you had said Brian Hartgen was a Jaws lover I might have agreed with you. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Sinse it was PHilip who sold the game for years from his blastbay company and sinse it was Philip who made the game completely self voicing in the first place requiring no screen reader, if indeed philip was a jaws lover methinks it would've surfaced long ago! :D. Indeed, this is why what Brian Hartgen is doing is so bloody stupid, he's taking a game which doesn't need any dependencies whatsoever, not even a screen reader, and effectively making it Jaws specific, indeed Leasy specific. For all I admit I have had fun coming up with alternative names for Brian Hartgen's product, Sleazey, greasy or lazy, I actually have nothing against the thing, accept for this stupid and shortsighted denigration of a very well put together game into a pointless little extra for a few people who happen to buy a completely ifferent product, and denying said game to the much wider group of people who do not want to buy that product. All the best, Dark. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, August 09, 2015 5:55 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home Hi Mattias, While Philip may be a Jaws user I don't think this situation with Q9 has arisen because he is a Jaws lover. [Audyssey] jim kitchens archive
Hi all. I just did a quick and dirty hack on the archive as I am going out. Someone can write up something on jim for it if they want and put it somewhere. Right now since there are things I can't do with it I have left most of the archive intact. 1. you will need to run winkit to install winkit. However to be honest if someone ever finds the source, in theory we could leave winkit out completely. if all games could be made to save in their own folder that would rock. I have not included the vb6 runners but winkit has them in its installer so as long as you load that in the right place as well as all the other self vvoicing games that will be ok. you may notice that all games are unzipped in the archive. This is to get round all the exe files with admin errors, I havn't moved the monopoly, golf and trivia data files into their respective folders for games which was quite stupid of me and I should have done it. The dos files I have moved for trivia to their seperate directory for trivia but only because the trivia files were uncompressed and in my face. I have included the guess the number vb project to. Note the xp speech and speech full and other sapi repair tools I did not include due to them being for an older os and such. I didn't include the install text either. I did manage to include the personal page in htnl. This is v1 off the archive, I am just snap posting it up here so we can have it like that. Idealy, we should either have menus with every game in it or just not have the menu at all, and have games written out in long description for their titles in folders. I'll leave that for someone to handle. This share can last for as long as dropbox will allow it to be downloaded but if I get my links suspended because of traffic it will probably go down. The other thing will be if I get more projects requiring space. That may or may not happen but right now I don't think I will need more things that would use all the space. the file is a zip file 124mb in size. I included what I thought appropriate. If someone wants the origional archived site without any modifications I can get it down tomorrow and upload that. https://www.dropbox.com/s/2z9okf82ca37lj3/kitchensinc.zip?dl=0 --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Darren. The inventory is a bit weerd mostly because a lot of the lower level items don't have useful names. For example an item to be equipped on the hands is just called hands When you click on any item, it will open a separate little panel. In supernova I always find these at the top of the screen. In that panel will be the item info and an equip or use button. I'll then be asked if I want to equip it and there is a message in the inventory section, also if it's a battle stratogy item I'll be asked which battle slot it should go in and there is a dropdown box. The way battles work is a bit odd but good when you get used to it, basically you have a hand of 10 battle stratogy items which are like cards in a ccg. You can choose items like damage, defend, poison, heal, curse etc, and you stick them in each of the ten slots, then in each turn of the battle you choose which one you use. As I said the one slightly confusing thing is that a lot of items are just called very general things such as damage or curse or arms and you need to look at the info to say what they do. The other thing about the inventory, is that it is split into two sections, trade materials and items. Each slot you alocate to trade materials will let you carry one more resource type (You can carry as much of that resource as you want, but you need the slots). You do this with the inventory options link which will give you a menu to choose how many slots to alocate to resources. hth. All the best, Dark. I try to respond, but for some reason I'm stuck there. I've had to delete and reinstall it for a fresh beginning, but no go. This is not the only app in general where I can't go past certain points. well slj has one on the forum, aprone has one kitchen.caldobsky.com So well hmmm. To be honest my archive is just for me, I may even take it down slj's one is more complete than mine is but at the same time its the games. I may actually post a dos only version of the archive with the dosbox talking distro though to be honest there are 3 archives up, mine sljs on temperary dropbox and aprones and the actual site which is up aprone has a complete website mirror. archive.org has a few sites you know it may be worth having someone shove all his stuff to archive.org ofcause it would be public domain at that point but whatever maybe and then link a url shortener to it. TO be honest though new mirrors are all over the place. And with all of that eventually I may just take mine down at some point. it will be good if everyone has mirrors but to be honest once enough have mirrors I may pull mine down its ok for what it is but my connection and data cap is quite tiny. On 9/08/2015 4:46 p.m., Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Aprone, The way I see it the more people who can share the files the better. While I also intend to mirror his site and games I would like to perhaps repackage them and give them better Windows installers. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Shaun, That's a bit obvious. No one is complaining about Q9 but the way the transfer was handled and the way Brian Hartgen has decided to distribute the game now that he has it. The point in my message you responded to is that if people don't like the new distribution policy that the game could be cloned, a new version developed, without the Leasey and Jaws restrictions. Obviously the clone would not be the same as the original due to copyrights but something very similar could be developed if that were something someone wanted to do. I'm not sure I like the game quite that much to rewrite it myself though. A lot of the elements in Q9 are pretty generic. We have a forest level, cave level, mountain level, and so forth. The enemies are gorillas, bats, rhinos, leopards, and wolves. Weapons are mainly a club and a slingshot. Point being that stuff is so common and generic that it is not copyrightable. The only things that are copyrightable is the sounds, music, and the little alien Q9 himself. If we created a game using a caveman doing the same things the game play could be identical to Q9 and not be considered copyright infringement. Make sense? Re: [Audyssey] jim kitchen passes away:
Hi Shaun, That hardly seems necessary, but you can do whatever you think is right. I have a feeling Jeremy is correct when he said there is no danger of Jim's games becoming unavailable because very quickly there will be 40 different sites where one can download his stuff from because everyone seems to have the same idea and is sharing them on Dropbox, Sendspace, and on private sites. While that is not a bad idea in of itself I do have some reservation about no organization or central control over the games and that means people will only offer what they want to offer and may leave out whatever they feel is not necessary or change things without the others knowing about it. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
not another tarzan junior. How about a side scroller that combines mario and sonic with mortal combat. And you could get all kinds of weapons like swords and bombs. and make levels where you have to smash cars and stuff with hammers. Or smash cars with your fish as you run bye them or jump over them. follow me on twitter @joshknnd1982 On 8/10/2015 12:40 AM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Dark, Oh, definitely agree. I've actually been doing some thinking and I think what would be cool is a modern remake or clone of Tarzan Junior since presumably Philip still holds the rights and it would be easy to get permission to rewrite TJ. Reason being it could be designed to use similar elements of Q9 but have a much more indepth and better side-scroller of Tarzan Junior. A lot of the elements that made Q9 as good as it was could be carried over to the new side-scroller and Brian Fartgen would have nothing to say about it. Cheers! On 8/10/15, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. Well yes Q9 has the fairly standard environments, weapons and gameplay, but as I said it's the design here that matters. This is actually why I'd be interested if one of our more established and experienced developers worked on some sort of side scroller sinse funnily enough while a few have been developed I've not seen any quite as well put together as Q9 for quite some time. Adventure at C: for example has a lot of good points, the rpg stats system and mod creation of new levels not the leased, not to mention challenges etc, but there are still portions that turn into a button masher. About Psycho strike I don't know, though various other attempts like Battlezone or scrolling battles have been rather rough around the edges I think mostly because people assume that creating enemies everywhere and having the player hammer the buttons is what makes a good game rather than messing with the enemy properties. Adventure to fate Project Alpha is extremely atmospheric and has some interesting challenges, but is fundamentally a very different game from something like Q9, closer to a side scroller adventure title, and while combat is very very quick in the birsts it occurs, it's the story and obstacles that make the difference. Angel gift is nothing short of amazing! from it's sound design to it's intelligent enemies, but it's fundamentally a short game, and given the massive and epic amount of sound work I'm not really surprised. So, oddly enough generic as Q9 is, it's been a hell of a long time sinse someone made something like it, much less something very very well designed, indeed the only game we've had that I can really compare it to is Superliam, and of course a game that has maze elements with going up and down on ladders etc the way Deathmatch project alpha currently does and the way the various montizuma games did is still in short supply side scroller wise. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Bryan, True. Not every developer does use the same programming language and/or platform. That said, there are ways around that problem if the developers really and truly want to work together to develop something decent. As with every collaboration project there would be a bit of give and take, and some developers would have to bone up on another language and tools which isn't that bad all things considered. An experienced developer such as myself can grab a Teach Yourself X in 24-Hours type book, read it, and be up and running in a new language in a week or so. The reason being after one gets passed the unique syntax and specific language fundamentals its the same as everything else. A variable is a variable, a class is a class, a function is a function, and if one knows how to program in one or more languages already learning a new one is a piece of cake. So a collaboration isn't totally out of the question. It is just that someone might have to be willing to give up on one language and tools to use whatever the group is using. Re: [Audyssey] drakor?
Nope, it's a browser game, so just text, albeit rather atmospheric and well written text in a game with some interesting mechanics. Really, much as I love Alteraeon, and much as I admire the amazing job Oriol has done with the game's sounds, sometimes I really do think it spoils people's expectations. Muds are text games, they rarely if ever have sounds. Browser games even rarelier have sounds. Wysiwyg! ie what you see is what you get. I am getting a trifle irritated by people expecting any mud or text mmorpg to be another alteraeon, sinse Alteraeon is the exception rather than the rule, and then going well I only like games with sounds so I'm not playing! when they find this out. Of course, I love Alteraeonand it's sound pack as much as anyone, but if the pack never existed, Alteraeon would stil be a great game to me. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] jim's nfl football - Josh K
Hi Dark, I feel pretty confident your AVG scan won't find anything because when I scanned that message it came up clean but then again MSE isn't the world's best virus scanner either. All the same in hindsight I wish I had just rejected that post for being over the message limit rather than passing it through the system seeing as how many people had problems with it. I do believe in the future I shall just reject any more messages like it since that log file was unbelievably huge. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Dark, Oh, definitely agree. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] jim's nfl football - Josh K
hey guys it was a very big log file of an entire season of nfl football. i wanted to show you guys how good I am at the game and how I won the superbowl. i had to send it through gmail on the website because it made my email client go crazy when I tried putting the whole thing into a message. follow me on twitter @joshknnd1982 On 8/9/2015 8:50 PM, john wrote: Hi list, I just received an email from Josh Kennedy (not Josh k - this may be important), with a listed size of about 1100 kb, and subject something to do with jim's nfl football (I deleted the message, and don't have the exact line anymore). Being a Jaws lover had nothing to do with it. If you had said Brian Hartgen was a Jaws lover I might have agreed with you. Cheers!
