I would venture to guess that this gecko not only has everted hemipenes
but part of his digestive tract (forget the name for this, help me
gexers!) also likely came out.

Prolapsed rectum?

Good deal Mike, I hope he recovers!

I took him to the vet this morning. I don't know how much of the vet's info I liked but this was the basics of it:

The gecko has parasites. He gave me a suspension that should kill two of the major baddies (I'll give the medication name if you are interested). He told me evolutionarily speaking, the geckos get bloody poop and they either recover or don't. "Survival of the fittest" separates the stronger from the weak but people like to treat our pets to keep them alive.

The gecko doesn't have an everted rectum but he has a "tiny" bit of everted hemipenes. I am to cover them with Vaseline to keep them moist so he can pull them back in. They have dried nubs on the ends but he said these will slough off as long as I keep the hemipenes moist and clean. They really are mostly inside his tail.

He's soaking in sugar-water again and will be until I get home in 4 hours. I have someone looking in on him so he doesn't drown (but I'm sure he's not stupid enough to drop his head into the 1/4 - 1/2 inch of water).

He'll be okay. Spiders are tough!

Mike,

Your update, post vet visit, to the list is most informative. Just wondering, why the soak now and not vaseline since you have already visited the vet? Be sure someone keeps an eye on your spider, cuz he's not up to snuff right now and we surely don't want him to drown. Hope that he's staying warm enough.

Hi there. The only reason he is soaking now is that he had a little bit of dried
urates stuck to his cloaca (males have this, too, right?). Just to be sure the area
was clean the vet told me to soak him. He's actually in the terrarium in an open
Tupperware container to keep warm. Anyway, the water will moisturize his bottom for
when I put the Vaseline on this evening.

Just like a little baby with diaper-rash! ;-)

[gecko]Bloody feces

2003-07-22 Thread oyarsa

I came home from work this evening and I found
rivulets of blood on the basking rock for my spider geckos. Here is a link to
the pic.
http://members.rogers.com/spidermikey/bloodyrock.jpg

It was accompanied by a healthy male gecko and a
very large blob of feces (little urates). I melted the feces in a glass ash tray
and it was mostly pure sand.

I've soaked him in a sugar solution in the sink and
he looked decent. After cleaning his cloacal area it turns out there are 2
slightly protuding red blobs. I assume these are hemipenes.

If it wasn't for the blood I wouldn't worry too
much but is this a common thing? I know everted hemipenes happens but with so
much blood? Anyway, I'll head to the vet tomorrow.

Thanks,

Mike

Good call Elizabeth, I forgot to mention prolapse from sand/substrate
impaction. Hasn't happened in my collection, however, I am not a big fan
of sand substrate. I use Reptisand when I do use sand. Fine grade sand
if you must!
