 you don't need to reinstall everything just for upgrading gcc to 4.1.x.
 Please
 read the update guide.

 For your problem, I would try MAKEOPTS=-j1 first. Oh, and reset every
 LDFLAGS you might have set - what about emerge --info?

Also if you tried to upgrade and did compile some packages they
_might_ need to be recompiled. Some packages don't like different gcc
versions in their libs (or just kernel + modules?).

That doesn't matter. Question is rather whether the target machine has
an entry in its terminfo db (/usr/share/terminfo). On ubuntu, this is
provided by ncurses-base (so I would suspect it might be installed).

You can also try to set TERM to vt102 or vt100:
$ export TERM=vt102

But if it works this way, that would mean /usr/share/terminfo/r/rxvt is
borked. Note that there might be terminfo databases w/ higher
precedence in /etc/terminfo and /lib/terminfo.

You list two patches.

The one for the ebuild you should apply to the ebuild manually
using 'patch', but you seem to have successfully done that already.

Then copy the first patch (net_dev.patch)

[gentoo-user] package.provided

Hi, list

I have x11-wm/beryl-0.2.1 installed on a stable system. One of its
dependencies is ~x11-wm/aquamarine-0.2.1 which dies during compilation.
This is fine with me because I installed beryl issuing:
emerge --resume --skipfirst
and it works OK. My problem is that portage wants to pull in aquamarine
every time I execute:
 emerge -DuN world

 emerge --depclean.

Following the official docs [1] I did
 echo x11-wm/aquamarine-0.2.1  /etc/portage/profile/package.provided

Am I missing something?

I guess you are using heliodor or emerald as window-decorator.
You can try to unset the kde use flag for the beryl ebuild which tries
to pull in aquamarine.

You have to put the net_dev.patch into the files directory of the
zd1211-driver ebuild which is usually located at
/usr/portage/net-wireless/zd1211/files/

That IS what the patch file looks like. It will alter your Makefile, and
the epatch function in portage is smart enough to try apply the patch

you don't need to reinstall everything just for upgrading gcc to 4.1.x. Please
read the update guide.

Second, as stated just above that passage, it is not nessecary but

You must however follow listing 2.1 and I would recomend keeping the old gcc

Thank you!

Indeed I'm using heliodor and removing the kde USE flag did the work

 http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-556528-highlight-nvidia+block.html

Hello Stuart,

Interesting reading. Here's what I currently used on my system:

x11-base/xorg-server  Installed versions:  1.1.1-r1

x11-drivers/ati-drivers   Installed versions:  8.35.5

This all works with my ATI 1900XT card (glx gears runs
on a full 22 inch widescreen (1680 x 1050) at 1800 FPS.
The little default 2x2 runs glxgears at 11,000 FPS.

This might explain why every permutaion of ati-drivers
and xorg-server that I entered into /etc/portage/package.mask
does not neutralize the request to upgrade xorg-server to 1.3.0.0

## I tried every permutation possible here, nothings masks
##the upgrade request so I can continue with routine upgrades
=x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r1
=x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.32.5

blocks B   x11-drivers/ati-drivers (
is blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0)

I did not glean from the discussion how to neutralize the erroneous
upgrade request so I can perform the other upgrades. Any ideas on that?

But then later in the same doc it says:
If you upgrade from gcc 3.3 to 4.1, do not use the method based on
revdep-rebuild, but do a complete system rebuild.
so the answer to your question would be either stay with 3.3.6 and rebuild
those packages that you emerged with 4.1.1 or upgrade to 4.1.1 and rebuild

[gentoo-user] eix-sync not displaying updates packages

2007-05-08 Thread Graham Murray
Since upgrading to eix-0.9.5, eix-sync does not show the packages which
will be upgraded/downgraded. It lists package changes for packages which
are not installed, but does not list those which the subsequent emerge
-auDvN world marks as 'N', 'NS', 'U' or 'UD'. With previous versions of
eix, eix-sync listed the changes to packages which would subsequently be
actioned by 'emerge -auDv world'. I have not manually changed anything
in /etc/eixrc but on each update have just accepted the changes
suggested by dispatch-conf. I have looked at /etc/eixrc and cannot see
any obvious variables which control this.

  You list two patches.

  The one for the ebuild you should apply to the ebuild manually

 Yep,

  Then copy the first patch (net_dev.patch)
 Ok, but, what is the content of net_dev.patch? if I put:

 #EXTRA_CFLAGS += -Wa,-a,-ad -g

 +EXTRA_CFLAGS += -DZDCONF_WE_STAT_SUPPORT=0
 EXTRA_CFLAGS += -DHOST_IF_USB
 EXTRA_CFLAGS += -DAMAC
 EXTRA_CFLAGS += -DGCCK

You need to copy the whole patch file exactly, including whitespace. Go to
https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=108347 and save as netdev.patch.

(This paragraph isn't critical, but if you want to understand patch/diff...)
In particular, you seem to have lost the diff line, the --- and +++
lines (which tell it what file to patch), the @@ ... @@ line (which tells
it where to look for the thing to change), the blank line that shouldn't
be changed, and the space characters in the first columns of the context
lines that tell it that those are context instead of changes.

So patch has decided that the contents of that file are too damaged for
it to use. In particular, it has no chance without any of the first three
lines, because it doesn't know what file to use and can't guess.

[gentoo-user] Clock is way off

2007-05-08 Thread Grant

Hello, the time on my laptop is off by a number of hours although I
have /etc/conf.d/clock set up to exactly match that of my router, and
the router has the correct time. I have this in /etc/conf.d/clock:

CLOCK=UTC
TIMEZONE=US/Pacific

'date' says 'Local time zone must be set--see zic manual page' but I'm
confused by the zic man page. Do I need to run a zic command to
correct this? If so, would it be something like this:

zic -l US/Pacific

  So install cdrkit.

 The real cdrecord
 is from cdrtools, though.

I'm pretty sure the one in cdrkit is real. Either that or I'm only
imagining that I burned and used my last rescue CD. *boggle*

:)

Just to be clear, cdrkit is a fork off of an older version of cdrtools that
was made because Debian doesn't believe cdrtools to be distributable by
anyone other than the copyright holder since parts are licensed under the
GPL and parts are under the (GPL-incompatible) CDDL. The issue is further
since the work isn't from an single author (contributions licensed under
the GPL from others have been integrated) AND at least one party involved
believes the GPL and CDDL to be compatible.

That doesn't make cdrkit less real, but it does mean that you'll probably
have fewer issues using cdrtools. (I use cdrkit and have never had any
problems with it; YMMV.)

[gentoo-user] no CD or DVD but rules seem correct

2007-05-08 Thread maxim wexler
Hi group,

After upgrading from 2.6.16 to 2.6.20 kernel I no
longer can access CD or DVD.

Here's the rules.d file:

localhost heathen # cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70*cd.rules
# This file was automatically generated by the
/lib/udev/write_cd_rules
# program, probably run by the
cd-aliases-generator.rules rules file.
#
# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on
a single line
# and set the $GENERATED variable.

# LITE-ON_LTR-52327S (pci-:00:08.0-ide-0:0)
ENV{ID_CDROM}==?*,
ENV{ID_PATH}==pci-:00:08.0-ide-0:0,
SYMLINK+=cdrom, ENV{GENERATED}=1
ENV{ID_CDROM}==?*,
ENV{ID_PATH}==pci-:00:08.0-ide-0:0,
SYMLINK+=cdrw, ENV{GENERATED}=1
# CREATIVE_DVD-ROM_DVD6240E (pci-:00:08.0-ide-0:1)
ENV{ID_CDROM}==?*,
ENV{ID_PATH}==pci-:00:08.0-ide-0:1,
SYMLINK+=cdrom1, ENV{GENERATED}=1
ENV{ID_CDROM}==?*,
ENV{ID_PATH}==pci-:00:08.0-ide-0:1,
SYMLINK+=dvd1, ENV{GENERATED}=1

I can't even manually make the link cause there's no
more /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd under $ls /dev. Nor do these
devices appear in dmesg.

Which is very puzzling cause in fstab it says:

...
/dev/hdc/cdrom  autonoauto,user 0 0
/dev/hdd/dvdautonoauto,user 0 0
...

But this gives no warning in the boot console that
some things weren't mounted.

Can someone please enlighten me?

Maxim

[gentoo-user] samba doesn't map to guest account

2007-05-08 Thread gummnmi-live
Hi list,

now after 6 hours non-stop trying to solve this issue I decided to contact the
list!
I actually just want to mount an samba share as guest via mount -t cifs ...,
but I alway get a mount error 13 = Permission denied.

I tried the following (and many else)

  mount -t cifs //172.16.0.3/ebooks /mnt/ebooks -o guest
  mount -t cifs //172.16.0.3/ebooks /mnt/ebooks -o
user=someuser,password=somepass

(both also with the sec options none,ntlm,ntlmi,ntlmv2,ntlmv2i or smbfs instead
of cifs) and always got mount error 13 = Permission denied. I just wanted
samba to map me to the guest-account but it wouldn't

I then tried

  mount -t cifs //172.16.0.3/ebooks /mnt/ebooks -o
user=realuser,password=realpass

(where realuser is a privileged user that really exists) and it worked!!

I also tried

  mount -t cifs //172.16.0.3/upload /mnt/ebooks -o guest

(where 'upload' has a force user/group option set. Look below in smb.conf) and
it worked!! Yes, it mapped me to the right account!!

But no matter what I did SAMBA-WON'T-MAP-MY-ACCOUNT-TO-GUEST on other shares
than upload!!!

Btw: I can connect with a windows-client and I can connect with smbclient and
it works like a charm - which makes me much more confused ?:-(
