[gentoo-user] DRI doesn't work with Radeon XPress 200M and opensource Drivers

2007-01-18 Thread Jerônimo Backes

I've tried everthing I found on
google and the forums and still can't find the way to make DRI work
with my ATI Radeon XPress 200M and the opensource drivers.

I don't want to install the closed source because I want to use beryl,
and these drivers can't do the job, AFAIK.

So, here I am, trying to figure out what is going wrong. I made
everything I could think of.

My Xorg.conf (the interesting part)

  Code:

Section "Module"

[...]

Load "dri"

Load "drm"
Load "glx"

[...]

EndSection

[...]

Section "Device"

Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Xpress 200M

Driver "radeon"

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"

Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

Option "AccelDFS" "1"

Option "GARTSize" "64"

Option "AGPMode" "4"

Option "EnablePageFlip""1"

Option "ColorTiling" "1"

Option "dri" "true"

Option "AGPFastWrite" "1"
EndSection

Section "DRI"

Mode 0666

EndSection

[...]

#composite is disabled

Modules I have enabled in the kernel and that are loaded by
/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6:

  Code:

agpgart

amd64-agp

drm #this one was built by emerge x11-drm

radeon #this one too

Dmesg doesn't show anything.

However, /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows this:

  Code:

[...]

[...]

The "Direct rendering broken on XPRESS 200 and 200M" part makes me
wonder whether or not a workaround exists. What can I do now?

[gentoo-user] Database migration software

2007-01-05 Thread Jerônimo Backes
Hi. I have a small database (100 tables) in firebird and want to migrate SOME
data of it to a postgresql database. The latter database serves to a different
purpose, so I just have to migrate specific columns of specific tables from the
former database.

Is there any app that can do that job? If not, I think I should create one...

[gentoo-user] Auto-backup tool?

2006-12-03 Thread Jerônimo Backes
Hi!

I have a laptop with lots of documents, plus, I am writing lots of
documents. When I'm working with these files, I stop after every 2 to 4
hours of work to save the changes, copying the updated files on a
external hard drive. I also send them to two e-mail accounts (gmail and
yahoo).

Is there a tool to make these repetitive tasks automatically? I would
like to have something that just copies the updated (and new) files to
my external HD, in order to keep both directories' contents in sync (on
my laptop: /home/jbackes/documents; on my external
HD: /mnt/external/backup/documents/) .

And for the activity of packing and mailing recent changed documents, is
there a tool that could do this automagically?

2Gb is the entire documents directory. I just want to e-mail the altered

I'll see what Kmail can do. Thanks again.

Re: [gentoo-user] Lightwheight Gentoo System

2006-10-12 Thread Jerônimo Backes

So I was thinking Gentoo, optimized for PII, I guess -Os would be a
good option for this little machine. Any thoughts anyone?

What about the desktop? I guess Gnome or KDE is not really the best
choice. But what else could I use? Of course, it's for kids, so I have
to be able to make it look nice :-) What would be a good window
manager? File manager? Other applications that help to keep it lean an
fast?
Man, I've installed gentoo in a Pentium III 450MHz with 128 MB RAM. The
apps I've installed were:

- KDE: It was very fast, but it took four days a week to compile. If you
think that installing KDE doesn't worth the effort (if you are afraid
that KDE may be sluggish), install slackware with KDE just to see how it
will perform on that hardware.
- OpenOffice.org: I was able to run OOo. It was a little (yes, just a
little) slow, but worked well. I also recommend you to install koffice,
because it is lightweight.

- The Gimp, Inkscape, Thunderbird, etc.: were swift and fast.

DO NOT install firefox. It is crappy on slower machines. Stick with
konqueror and avoid headaches.

Everything should run better than you expect on that machine. If you are
in doubt because of performance concerns, try slackware just to test
what you can be executed on your machine. With gentoo you'll have to
compile everything (and it will take a week), but it will pay the
effort, because everything will be faster.

The solution is simple: Don't use arts. You can also open the
configuration panel of Amarok and in the Engine section, select Alsa
as output plugin (or maybe esd, as you use gnome)

Hi

recently i merged amarok to see what´s the big deal about it.
But after the merge the CPU usage raised to 100% caused by artsd an then
an errormessage pops up:

error - artsmessage
Sound server fatal error:
cpu overload, aborting

What kind of issues? Admittedly I have not tested KDE throughly but I have
been using KDE with UTF-8 for a few months now and I have experienced no
