media-video/dvd9to5 allows you to copy dual-layer disks to single-
layer disks, with the penalty of some quality loss.

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/gentoo/user/194658#194658
discusses buring dual-layer media.

There are also some GUI utilities that are probably easier to use.

Honestly, it may be easier to hack your player, depending upon the
model. The majority of cheap Chinese DVD players sold in supermarkets
are unlocked by pressing a few buttons on their remotes (eg. menu, 1,
2, 3, 4, eject), the code easily found on the net by searching Google
(for model number region unlock or model number region free). If
this applies to your DVD player then it will be much quicker many
fewer button presses than copying the DVD.

See http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/gentoo/user/194652 for a
long discussion regarding this.

The /path/to/your/file.iso can be played using mplayer (media-libs/
libdvdread USE=css), but is not suitable for writing to disk (if you
want it to be playable on a standalone player, at least).
