 Hi,

thanks a lot for your offer and for providing samples of your work, too.
I'm impressed that you did logos for blender and Battle for Wesnoth.
I'm sorry that I can't tell you anything about creating the next logo,
however there is also another way to contribute to the GIMP community.

I'm planning to conduct interviews with graphic / interface / web
 designers and photographers.
The idea is to better understand how users actually work in the field,
i.e. what they do and how they do it.
The insights from the interviews will be used to improve ease of use /
 usability of GIMP.
Interviews are planned to take place in October, with an interview
taking about one hour, via VoIP.

I'd be very happy if you decided to help both GIMP team and users by
 being interviewed about your work.

Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

 Kind regards,

 Tobi

Re: [Gimp-developer] GUI enhancement patch from GIMP UI brainstorm blog

2011-01-08 Thread Ramón Miranda
hello every one!

The original Vision and the what
if?
I have seen the new changes based on UI brainstorm, and i have to say that
is very good for testing to have the ability of test new UI changes like
MrSigtech. has done. But i agree with main developers. Because UIbrainstorm
is just like that. and i see that it will be a madness to test all ideas. It
will be bad for coherence in UI terms to have infinite versions of Gimp with
different UI design. I agree with the phone support idea. That is important
for development and for teaching, tutorials, books and more things to come.

We can´t forget that gimp has a vision, a good or a bad vision ,it
depends who is talking about it. But is an Own vision. all the painter
stuff is against this original vision, But could this change for a new open
vision? i thing that is possible. and good for both audiences, photographers
and illustrators,.I know we are very very different fields but this could be
very good to improve our knowledge of gimp.

Nowadays we have things like David Revoy´s (sintel Art director) DVD Chaos
and evolutions
that shows gimp paint potential using gimp painter and a personal brushkit
that is completely free to download.
Also we have GimpPaintStudio with lot of presets and people that is start to
using it regularly due his features.
and Gimp Painter is still in progress adding new features like mixbrush,
g-pen, smoothing,minscale,power...

All this means that there is a good audience, and lot of interest on have a
good painting features in gimp, althoug there is no painting purposes on the
original vision.althoug we have mypaint and krita, we want, we would like to
have this painting power on our loved gimp.

Colaboration between the actual
resources.--
So i have to thank a lot all the people working hard in provide GIMP.
coders,web-designers,and original creators.Gimp is now really good ,but will
be impressive if we open our mind and see what happens. GimpPaint Studio
supports gimppainter use and even more in the 1.5 release where we are using
more the texture feature of the mixbrush.something that is not possible on
the original Gimp by now.
My personal thought is that it will be better to work all together, in the
same direction like a team.Sigtech and his Gimppainter team coding working
in combination with Alexia and the gimp team, all supervised by
guiguru.Sigtech and his team is an amazing resource, and we have to use it
properly, giving him help and encouragement. he alreaday have done a good
job with gimp painter, but imagine what he could do with more time a bit of
support,and more coders.
if Enselic is not available for a time, well, let´s him relax :D .meanwhile,
Gimpaintstudio will be still developing new ways to use tools, spreading the
gimp use all over the world by videotutorials, wiki, etc.

Young Blood and
future.---
But i want to say something that maybe it will not sound so good.Roughness
is not good, and it is absurd be rude when we all are in the same
team, trying to help. And we have to think that we work by internet and irc
can be cold missing the tone of the words.and also english is not always
our language so it is more difficult to explain some things or even our
thoughts.
And if we want to get some new coders or people interested on invert his
spare time on gimp development, we have to make the idea more atractive, by
kindness, communication, and maybe more social network pressence. To make
some videos showing the good capabilities of gimp.. .in other words,
marketing to sell the Idea gimp is good ,powerful and fun. wich is true
but unfortunately not so well known.

this is mi honest opninion

 Hi, all.
I'm recently implementing a GUI features that is inspired by the ideas
 of the GIMP UI brainstorming.
I hope these features to be included or merged into the master branch
 in some future.
So I inform you the patch here.
If you're interested in the patch, please discuss about it.

The patch is maintained by git, and published at following site.

 http://git.sourceforge.jp/view?p=gimp-painter/gimp-painter-2.7.git;a=summary

This patch implement several features like:
 * horizontal toolbar with many tool options.
  (http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/2009/07/blog-post.html or
 http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/2009/07/gimpscape.html)
 * much sophisticated brush panel

 * dynamics editor with side tabs
 (http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/2009/12/brush-dynamics-curves.html)
 * vertical dock and image tabs for single window mode.
 * dock folding features. I think this feature is necessary for single
 window mode.

and some of the brush enhancement options which idea is imported from

Re: [Gimp-developer] Artistic extensions to Gimp with (Wacom) drawing pad

2009-12-03 Thread Ramón Miranda
HI
I am not really agree with that, for example photoshop is a Photo
manipulation program, but most of CG painters use PS to paint sketches and
final pieces . Film industry and game industry knows that. Lot of people use
only PS to paint ,so the purpose of the program is irrelevant at certain
point. Translating to free software ,of course GIMP can paint and i am
showing this with some pieces of art. I created GPS to do painting tasks
becouse i a msure that gimp can do professional tasks in this field. IT is
better than photoshop on customizable interface and developers still working
in UI and lot of features. I know both of them. You can use gimp to paint
and if we have a very good presets manager it will be lot of better than
photoshop. becouse Photoshop presets are very umcomfortable and difficult to
rearrange. Only Gimp ids good, but in fact we can use also the Gimp Painter
version which is more powerfull in painting tasks. the
smoothing, power, flow, min sclae, and other parameters. i am sure Alexia is
working hard to improve this in oficial version. and also wi will have tags
and that will be very good to manage brushes groups.

My paint is different software different idea and diferent develope. It has
the most lovable brush engine that i know. and has a lot of future . Can
mimic perfectly lot of techniques even better than Painter . and i am not
joking. Setting right the parameters we can do all we want to do. just
Awesome program. But is a baby in comparission with gimp developement. i am
waiting to see the 0.8 release. will be Amazing if Martin implements the
requirements.

And i want to say that we have to be very pattience. We will arrive slowly
to achieve better softwares with better tools. All of us are working for
that. Blender is the top one. gimp is really impressive when you study them
and test. Mypaint is a promise by now. We have lot of things to do . This is
a wonderful adventure becouse we are changing the way that people see the
open source software. Free software is the future.

I don't know why people mention so much that if you create a single
 window
Gimp that that it will not allow you to put your tools in a second monitor
because I used Photoshop also many times and despite it being a single
 window
program it allows you to put the toolbox and the parameter windows (or at
least it did in some older versions) in a separate monitor and leave the
 main
program window all for editing pictures if that's what people wanted. You
 coul
also save the workspace layout so Photoshop always opened like this and
 Gimp
already has the ability to save it's layout too. Photoshop allowed this
perfectly and still was a single window program.

If that's the concern of people then perhaps Gimp should become a single
windows program that allows this, that allows you to put the toolbox and
 the
right utilities window in a separate monitor while still preserving a
 single
box or entry in the taskbar. In my opinion having a single entry in the
taskbar is much better because it's far less messy, the biggest problem
 with
the multiple entries interface is that some people seem to think that
everybody opens Gimp only here and there and ocasioanlly and they are not
thinking of the profesional users that use Gimp seriously (and yes it is a
powerfull program already and it can be used seriously) and some people
 seem
to be forgetting that some people like me for example many, many times have
several windows and applications running simultaneously and when I mean
several I mean a lot, I find myself many times with 10 or 12 aplications
and/or utilities or more open at the same time (with todays memorys and CPU
power this is very possible and more common than some people think) and
switching among them and believe me this is not uncommon for professional
artists that are jumping from 3D to illustration to bitmap editor, video
editing, Flash and/or a web page layout program or even more programs back
 and
fort like a carrousel. In todays workflow you can find many users that work
just like that instead of the persons that just open a bitmap editor
ocasionally and the issue is that when you have a lot of windows of
 different
programs open at the same time a program like Gimp can become a mess in the
task bar in MS Windows or even in other Operating Systems. Sometimes when
 I'm
working like that the taskbar is so full that it creates a second entry
 line
and you have to switch between the first line of items or entries in the
 task
bar and the secong and with Gimps it gets sort of confusing or anoying in
 that
situation and I use Blender too which creates a second window for the
 command
window and many times a third windows for the rendering window and then you
get a mess. Programs that have a single entry in the task bar are far
 better
for this type of workflow, they are easier to manage.

Maybe the Gimp team should make a survey to see how many people prefer the
single entry or single window program over the multiple ones. This issue of
too many windows have been a source of complain of many, many Gimp users
 for
long years and I think that it would be foolhardy to ignore and at the very
least the Gimp team should consider making a survey to see how many people
prefer the single window interface but remember what I told you at first
 about
being able to put the toolbox pane and the right pane in other monitors
despite the program being single window or single entry program.

I think that part of the confussion comes precisely from the fact

Re: [Gimp-developer] [PATCH] Improve brush outline for fuzzy brushes, sample screenshot included

2009-08-30 Thread Ramón Miranda
Hi all,
My opinion about that is the same as shirakawa if we want to do photography
retouch and superexact works like these, but artisticaly i would prefer
something like Martin says. It is more useful for the eye, if we want to
make an stroke fast and not acuratly but in the aprox right place.the old
method requieres user imagination to preview in his mind what will happen...

but i have to say that i don´t use this brush outline feature becouse it
makes my gimp sloower with complex outlines. So if somebody has the
solution for this... i am listening.
best regards
2009/8/30 SHIRAKAWA Akira shirakawa.ak...@gmail.com

 Martin Nordholts wrote:

I think the current brush outline for fuzzy brushes is too big. The
attached patch improves the brush outline for fuzzy brushes (see
screenshot [1]). If using a higher threshold doesn't result in any
outline at all, the patch fallbacks to the old brush outline so that a
brush outline always is shown even if the brush only has low-intensity
  values.

In my opinion the idea of the brush outline is that it represents its
total area of effect, or in other words, the area where pixels will be
affected in a way or another while drawing. The brush outline for fuzzy
brushes (assuming dynamics aren't applied) *looks* too big, but it
actually isn't. This is most evident by drawing a few strokes with the
fuzzy brush on a transparent layer and then adjusting the alpha level
channel on ColorsLevels to coordinates (0;255) .

A more useful patch (in my opinion) for brush outlines would be making
them change together with brush dynamics (even if the user isn't
actually drawing, just moving the cursor on the drawing area) if they
are enabled. This could be useful in many ways, but I have the
impression it would lead to performance issues.

  The kinematics talk[2] was

Michael and I are looking into how to set up a cooperation to
 make this happen.

the integration of this principle in GIMP needs careful attention
(based on the principles and usability facts that Michael's team
uncovered), just piling another load of new stuff into GIMP just
 makes it bigger, not better.

I especially want to focus on supporting and inspiring the
highest calibre of creative work and avoid that the impression
may rise that all this is there to enable novices to handpaint
 their first square and circle.
