Ben's suggestion is far better than mine (using gphoto) for the creation
of thumbnails.

You may still find ghoto useful for creating web galleries if you don't
wish to write a script yourself, in which case it will do the thumbnails
for you. But just as a way to get thumbnails, gphoto is overkill.

Correct, also called thumbnails. I think it's more og less
a standard developed by the XV-team. I like GIMP being able
to make use of it. It's simple small images (in some
obscure format =) saved in a hidden directory called .xvpics.

However, GIMP can be told to stop saving new thumbnails
somewhere in the preferences menu. Sorry, I cannot help
you further because I haven't installed GIMP on my new Debian
 system yet.

What IS the format? How could I use the thumbnails in other ways?

I would like a thumbnail to be availabale for use on a web page. I know I could
probably gin up a method using convert or some-such, but since the full-size
images are always being processed with gimp, it would save a bunch of
time/effort to be able to use the thumbnails directly.

Thanks,

Bill Lee

I don't have an answer for your question directly, but I use gphoto to
create thumbnail galleries. gphoto is designed mostly for getting images
out of digital camaras, but will also work with them out of a directory on
the file system. So I use the GIMP to touch up my photos, put those ready
for the web in a directory and then use gphoto to get a gallery with
thumbnails.

Interesting use of gphoto. But what an AWFUL file naming convention it uses for
the thumbnail images! Is there any way to get that straightened out so the
thumbnail image and the original are easily linked? (Yes, I know: not a gimp
question. Sorry.)

Hi, With the new gimp1.2 I just noticed .xvpics directories popping up
like mushrooms. This something to do with preview settings? Or? How do I
turn this off and is this a good thing?

Thanks.

Ah, ha! I thought so. Is there a generic way to turn it off, aside from
when you save a pic?

Shame, for one brief moment I thought it was a coded hidden mesage from
the programmers. You know, like "Paul is dead"...

Thanks.

Does it pick where it saves these? So far I've worked in two directories
and found them in both. They breed like crazy. No way of setting a
directory or restricting it to one?

Shh. Not so loud. I have to adjust my foil skullcap to keep the

That's it, bad call??? I had to go in the basement and dig out the

File -- Preferences.

In the "Environment" Category, under "File Saving"

Change the answer to the preference "Try to Write a Thumbname File"

from "Always" to "Never"

No .xvpics directory; no previews in file load operations, either.

Currently, .xvspics directories crop up in all directories where you

ask Gimp to save images.

Be good, be well
