For the gimp-user list, the number of messages created in the "list
discontinuation" threads (roughly 100 by now) is fast approaching the
number of messages this list has had in total before that for the whole
year (about 110).

Personally, I think that Discourse will be more than able to handle this
amount of messaging, will likely even lead to an increase in volume, and
be able to reach more people in general.

I don't think changing to a service many people wouldn't even have heard

receiving email notifications and password reset mails for accounts they
have at various services.

Discourse is usable via its web interface and email (you can get

a few threads per month, counting all mailing lists together). Myself
I barely look at mailing lists every once in a while and make a random
answer sometimes. And there were several mailing lists I was not even
subscribed to (I did for the sake of this announcement). So that's
probably why none from the core team is really trying to fight this
change.

There is one more thing to take into consideration: more
infrastructure means more work. I said it above, I am exhausted by
this all. I was only managing one of the mailing lists so far (the
gimp-gui one, the most recent) and still had to regularly handle
spams. I am personally thankful that this work goes to GNOME admins now.

Spam did indeed heavily outweigh the on-topic messages on the other five
mailing lists for quite some time - and anyone who's ever maintained a
mailman-based mailing list can likely confirm that spam handling there
is not as comfortable as doing this in e.g. a capable mail client.

The rectangle can be adjusted with an additional step - using the
Rectangle select tool on an existing selection initializes it to the

Ruben, I am pretty sure that the core issue in this thread is experience.

A bit of background:

Security is a process.

For any kind of effective security measures, you have to go through at
least a planning, and implementing and an operations stage. That means
you collect the requirements you have, evaluate what solutions there
are, which of them best suits your needs, decide which one you are going
to use, then install and configure it to your needs, and then run it,
update it, review its findings, keep yourself updated on any of its
known issues, and so on.

At every stage, you will learn a lot if you want to do them properly.

BTW, I know that this is a rather rough and imprecise summary.

Now, any of these stages can become arbitrarily short. Especially if you
are not an employee at a company who gets paid for doing them and
learning, but a user at home who follows the results of a "download
antivirus" query in Google Search and clicks through the installer.

If in doubt, you lack the time, motivation, and maybe the skills to do
more than that, and an issue like that makes you hesitate. And then you
ask people who may know more about the issue, for example people who are
involved with and/or use the application your antivirus just flagged
with a more or less cryptic message.

What would you prefer to read as a reply:

- a flat statement that the antivirus you are using is bad and you
should use something else, without specifying what something would be
good, and why?

- and explanation of what may have happened, what can be done to examine
if that was indeed the case, and potential remedies without changing
your system more than necessary?

It is a well-known fact that every antivirus software will occasionally
find a so-called false positive, a file that is marked as containing a
potential malware. Doing that makes none of them worse than any of its
competition. You usually get a way to upload suspicious files to the
vendor of the software to have it examined - this provides you with a
report of what they found, and gives them an opportunity to improve the
detection and avoid that same issue in future updates.

Now, it is perfectly fine to keep up the statement that "they
[TrendMicro] are the problem" *IF* you can add some
verifiable/falsifiable facts to help others to determine this for
themselves.

This mailing list is not necessarily the best place to do so, however -
I'd do this in a place where other security experts, including outspoken
(but fair) critics of antivirus software, are around and can challenge
your statement.

If this was too much text, let me add one final fact:
We know of no general issues of any specific antivirus solution and the
GIMP installers.

first, let's get one important aspect mentioned:

XGimp is an Android (and iOS) application maintained by a third party
with no connection to the GIMP project. We can't really help with any
technical issues of the app.

Some words of warning, though:

>From as technical point of view, and to the extent we were able to tell,
it is a combination of:

- a simple image editor running on your mobile device
- a remote desktop client connecting to a number of servers run by the
third party mentioned before, and the GIMP application you are then
using is run in this remote desktop environment

The third party is offering a similar approach for other Free Software
applications.

As far as we can tell from what users have investigated, there is no
session separation between different users, so you are able to see and
open files uploaded by others, and vice-versa.

It looks like users are also able to modify script files of the remote
session, making this a potentially dangerous experience.

Also, from what you are describing, the integration with the local file
handling seems to be sub-par (this is something the app developers could
and should handle a lot better in their actual app).

So, unfortunately, not an answer to you question, but maybe this makes
you reconsider whether you should be using the app at all.

You could ask the WordPerfect developers about this, maybe the unique
combination of an old WP version on a current system sparks their
interest and they can come up with possible reasons.

It is equally likely that they will suggest to update to a more current
version - I'd do the same for GIMP, where the current version is 2.10.24.

GIMP is Free Software, licensed under the GNU General Public License.

As such, as defined by the Free Software Foundation:

"A program is free software if the program's users have the four
essential freedoms: [1]

The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does
your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a
precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others
(freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to
benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition
for this."

This means you do not need to ask permission to use GIMP for anything
you want to do, nor can anyone here deny you permission to use it for
anything you want to do.

You could file a bug for Chromium and have them examine what, if
anything, is the issue with the file and/or Chromium.
The PDF works with Firefox.

The original ODT and a DOC version are available as well:

https://www.gimp.org/about/ITI-VPAT.odt
https://www.gimp.org/about/ITI-VPAT.doc

Could be that simply exporting the ODT to PDF with LibreOffice will now
create a PDF file Chromium does like, maybe you could try this?

That's a PDF file, IIRC created with LibreOffice. Are there any known

Can you provide one such file?

Even if GIMP was distributed under the terms of the GNU AGPL, there is this

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/agpl-3.0.en.html#section13

"Notwithstanding any other provision of this License, if you modify the
Program, your modified version must prominently offer all users
interacting with it remotely through a computer network (if your version
supports such interaction) an opportunity to receive the Corresponding
Source of your version by providing access[...]"

and this

https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#AGPLv3InteractingRemotely

"If the program is expressly designed to accept user requests and send
responses over a network, then it meets these criteria. Common examples
of programs that would fall into this category include web and mail
servers, interactive web-based applications, and servers for games that
are played online.

If a program is not expressly designed to interact with a user through a
network, but is being run in an environment where it happens to do so,
then it does not fall into this category. For example, an application is
not required to provide source merely because the user is running it
over SSH, or a remote X session."

So unless we claim that GIMP is a network-based image editor (and I
doubt that the current Script-Fu server really qualifies to support that
claim), this would still not give us a handle to prevent this use case -
it would only possibly guarantee access to modified source code, but I'd
find even that doubtful due to the answer to that FAQ.

If it should provide us with such handles, then I do not see how, and,
it would be good if you could point out the relevant sections of the GNU
AGPL and/or FAQ entries.

you won't find such restrictions and limitations on www.gimp.org because
GIMP is distributed as Free Software as specified in the Free Software
Foundation's Free Software definition.

Quoting from https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html, you have the
following four essential freedoms:

"
The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does
your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a
precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others
(freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to
benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition
for this.
"

This doesn't leave any room for usage restrictions - this is the
definition's purpose, and is considered a good thing :)

But please, do consider to offer a more recent version of GIMP than
2.8.16 - the current stable version is 2.10.18.

What you found is just the command line being used to run a custom
script someone wrote - I assume this was available from one of the
now-defunct links in the message you linked to.

In short: what you have found and posted is not a complete script, not
by far.

In principle, the actual script was likely similar to the examples in
https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Basic_Batch/ - with different parameters,
though, as it only really needs to open a file and export it with a
different file name.

Regardless of the platform, some people use the desktops as there main
file and folder storage location - I've seen desktops spanning multiple
screens, with icons everywhere, no free space left.

Other people use dedicated folders, sometimes even those the platform
suggests for these tasks.

It's mostly personal choice, like e.g. replying above or below quoted

If you take the image that is shown there, then you are working with the
preview image the site is showing you. In this preview, the added
checkerboard pattern is used to symbolize transparency, because that
aspect is otherwise hard to see (pun intended).

Notice that there is also a link there to download the larger version?
That one is the file you want, and it has got proper transparency.

This is quite common for such image sites, and something you have to
understand when getting transparent images from them, unless you want to
do unnecessary extra steps like the following every time you get images
from there:

So unless support for reading what the buttons are supposed to do is

You now got 2.10.0-RC1, an ancient pre-release of GIMP 2.10.0

You could be running into the following issue with 2.10.14:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/4385

Please check if this could apply to your case (see what people write in
the comments there and compare this to your system) and report back,
getting more data points about the problems helps to prove or disprove
our current assumptions.

It's currently not know what exactly is happening there, especially as
the only change between the previous version of the 2.10.14 installer
and the current one is the fix for a different issue (where the Sophos
anti-malware applications were blocking access to one of GIMP's
dependency libraries).

Trying a very non-complex approach:

Use the color picker tool to pick up the background color, then use the
paint brush with an appropriately sized brush to paint over the rectangle.

For that image, the method above is quite fast, except for the area
around the h in Cheers.

The text in the screenshots shows some sub-pixel hinting artifacts, for
better screenshots it might be wise to turn subpixel hinting off before
taking them, or make sure this is done by grayscale pixels only.

You should specify how many images your "several are", and how many
annotations your are going to remove from each on average.

Also, avoid JPEG for anything but the final exports - using this format
introduces artifacts around every edge, and will complicate your task
needlessly.

I'm not aware of this problem being reported before, but as you have
apparently found reports by others with that issue, could you link to
your findings?

The majority of users seem to be able to use GIMP just fine, so
identifying this issue to make it also usable for the unlucky few is the
better approach.

For that we should know a few more things:

- what version of GIMP do you use?
- what platform are you on?
- do the brushes work in the image, even though they do not appear in
the brushes dialog?

A common approach would be to load the entire PDF file (all or some
pages of it) in the resolution you want, and then crop it to the parts

If you are referring to an app you bought on the iOS app store - or
rather rented, in this case - then there's nothing we can do, unfortunately.

Someone just thought that it would be a great scheme to make money by
stealing the GIMP name and Wilber logo and slapping it onto their own
application.

We did complain about that, of course, but Apple is playing their usual
"if it doesn't cost us money or endangers our won brands, we're not
going to act" game.

So you should complain to Apple and use whatever refund methods they
offer in cases of fraud. This may get them to act, because it might make
them lose money.

Your image will only have about 1 million pixels, so that might be a bit

[Gimp-user] Test mail to verify restored list connection to gimpusers.com

FYI,

for some time, the forum at gimpusers.com seems to not have handled any
mail it got from the gimp-user mailing list. Mail from the forum to the
list went through just fine.

This means that for anyone only subscribed to the forum, any of the
replies on the lists didn't get through.

The gimpusers.com maintainers told me that they have restored the
connection and two-way communication should be working again.

This mail is a test for that.

Are you sure that's due to the lasso? Try a different selection tool.

If this yields the same results, we'd need to know where you are pasting
to. If it is another image, then check the mode of this image - if
that's indexed or grayscale, then that is the issue.

Megapixels are a product of (roughly) width times height of an image in
pixels, and as such not really properly specified - there are many ways
to multiply two of these values and arrive at 1.5 megapixels.

Going by the following chart (and assuming 1.4 MP or 1.6 MP are close
enough, and fairly common display size - or at least height -
standards), I'd go with an image of either 1440x960 pixels or 1536x1024
pixels.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sensoraufl%C3%B6sungen.svg

I'd opt for the former at 1.4 MP, though.

If you are not booked on having one file, then maybe keep the multiple
files - in fact, create even more of them, at smaller scales with less
detail - and then use something like https://leafletjs.com/ (FLOSS to
make the map interactive and zoomable?

TL;DR: Leaflet is a javascript library to create maps like on the
OpenStreetmap site. They use it, actually:

Assuming we're not dealing with a broken system configuration here, then
GIMP should still work out of the box, and we have to figure out what's
causing this.

Might be that this is known and I missed that in the past few months, of

You seem to want to drag me into this.

Reread the bug report, and you will realize that you got some comments
wrong.

I kept the report open back then because that fact that I couldn't
reproduce it in 2.9.22 does not necessarily mean that the original
reporter (with 2.8.18) would see the same. Unfortunately they never
wrote any further comments.

The messages you interpreted as issue 1007 being closed were your issue

Instead of complaining, we prefer if people try help to figure out what

[Gimp-user] Git and Bugzilla migration to gitlab.gnome.org - action items and important hints

2018-05-22 Thread Michael Schumacher
Hi all,

GNOME is migrating all projects to https://gitlab.gnome.org

This GitLab instance is replacing both the current GNOME Git repository
and GNOME Bugzilla.

On 2018-05-23 (tomorrow/today, depending on time zone), GIMP and its
bugs will be migrated.

This has some effects and requires some action:

1. HINT: Lots and lots of Bugzilla notification mails

Everyone who is receiving Bugzilla mails for comments and status changes
of GIMP bugs will receive about 1400 mails. If you do not want this,
disable mail on your Bugzilla preferences or unwatch the b...@gimp.org
user there temporarily:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email

Bugzilla will stay around for bug research, but no bug tracking will
happen there for migrated projects anymore.

GitLab uses the term "Issues" instead of "Bugs". Once we're migrated
we'll start fine-tuning the project settings and provide an update mail
about any important changes.

2. ACTION ITEM: gitlab.gnome.org accounts

Make sure you can log in to GNOME GitLab:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/users/sign_in

Everyone who has Git commit access has a GNOME LDAP account and can use
it to log in there - but you have most likely forgotten your password.
Follow the instructions on
https://wiki.gnome.org/AccountsTeam/RetrieveYourGNOMEAccountPassword to
get a temporary one and use the GNOME Account system to set a new password.

Everyone else should sign up for a standard account - using a Google,
GitHub or GitLab account for authenticating is possible.

And do not worry: if anything goes wrong, the admins can help you.

Regarding actual git usage, anonymous Fetch URLs continue to work, but
will eventually have to be changed, Push URLs will have to be changed
immediately. More about this when we have been migrated and tried this
ourselves.

The way is to figure out why it doesn't do this - that could be
platform-specific - and then fix whatever is necessary to make it stay
on top. But note that you most likely do not want it to become modal,
i.e. block the whole GIMP UI, just because on image has a dialog open.

See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770915 - some feedback on
whether this script works as expected would be useful, preferably
directly as comments in the bug report.

The corresponding bug report is:

Different compiler flags are likely the reason for speed differences
encountered in different builds, and figuring out those which provide
fast, yet still accurate results is the constructive way to go forward.

Please check the file name of the installer you used
- if it is not gimp-2.10.0-setup-2.exe, then you got an older version

You mean "people", not "Windows users". Being able to describe anything
in a way that is easy to understand is an acquired skill.

The middle ground is already there - there are regulars on every list
and forum with experience in the tools involved, and they can make it
their task to convert "it is broken!"-type message into useful bug
reports, or refer to existing ones.

A recent example would be

This is because both methods get you the same file - the torrent is set
up to use various mirror servers as web seeds.

The initial anti-virus reports have been a common sight for years, and
are due to the fact that antivirus software is at least partially based
on whitelists and more recently on reputation-based scores, meaning
users of the antivirus software can report whether they consider a file
trustworthy (this is the "FileRep" or "Reputation" 'virus' reports you
might see popping up).

And yes, this means people can attempt to poison such scores.

There more on that here:

It's likely that your AV software is now preventing you from doing
anything with the file, including to delete it. You should update it to
make sure that the false positive is gone.

You should describe this in a way that gives others the chance to
reproduce exactly what you got - assume that they know how to use GIMP,
but do not know what commands you use.

By following your instructions, they should have the same image as you
and be able to do the positioning just like you.

Assuming it is similar to a scanner, there's likely TWAIN support on the

It usually switches back as soon as you let go of the modifier key, but
there have been reports of that mode getting stuck. Reproducing them has
not been successful so far, though.

If you can reproduce this at will, it would be very helpful if you could
list the steps to do so. Be precise, as it could matter whether you are
using the keyboard, the mouse or a tablet stylus for each step.

For the restrictive "no bigger" that you likely have in mind, the answer
is: No.

Nothing will prevent anyone from printing any image at any size.

But you control the number of original pixels they get.

There is Image -> Scale to do this, but I assume you already know how to
scale images to any desired size in pixels.

The customers can scale the image up again, of course, and have the
interpolation method of their choice invent new pixels from what they
got. These do not necessarily look the same, so I guess this would
suffice to fulfill your goal.

You want the tools-value-2-increase-*/decrease-* action mapped to the

Changing the size of the brush itself is not going to change the size

What happens is a file locking issue for the fontconfig cache - see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782676#c14 ff for more details.

The new cache file is actually created, but it never replaces the old
one, and so this process is repeated on every start. Even when
intervening manually, anything which causes a regeneration of the cache
may run into the same issue and start that annoying cycle anew.

A permanent fix is to use a more recent version of the fontconfig
library, and as mentioned in that bug report, this is something aimed
for in a 2.8.24 release (or actually, the installer package created from
that).

The current development release for the Windows platforms, 2.9.6, uses
the recent fontconfig and startup behavior seems to consistently avoid
that issue, so I'm confident that's fixed for good.

So this happens when you create a new file, i.e. when you confirm the
new image dialog?

> Yet I can open up a recent file - but I cannot save a file!

And it also happens when you try to save a file?

Does it also happen on exporting to an image file format other than XCF?

Do their drivers support the Wintab API?

Because this is how third-party plug-ins are supposed to bundle DLL
files they may use. Third-party plug-ins are also supposed to live in
either a subdirectory of an existing plug-ins (2.9.x searches these by
default now) folder or an additional folder altogether.

Note that GIMP 2.9.x versions may show additional errors which are
silently ignored for stable releases.

Once anything changes, you can expect to see mentions of that at the
following places:

The feature request for text layer import from PSD:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151686

The bug report about text layer export to PSD:

The list of changes to the PSD file format plug-in:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/log/plug-ins/file-psd

- and the latter as an RSS feed:

You should be a bit more specific... for example, you didn't tell us
what platform you are on.

Maybe take some time, think about "What could they possible need to know
to help me?", and try to anticipate some of our questions? :)

rich, can you please *never* suggest to delete the user profile?
Please only advise users to rename it.

If the users does this, and this turn out to fix the issue, we'll never,
ever have a chance to figure out what exactly has caused this.

Use a current version of GIMP - 2.8.22, for example.

Downloaded this file, imported it into GIMP 2.8.22, exported to PSD, and
encountered no problems when importing this again.

As you modified the file before exporting, this test is likely not
representative - can you describe the perspective transform you've applied?
