Re: CD's to pass out PLUS: cd burning problems

2000-04-13 Thread Adam Wendt

I can get blank CDRs in bulk (no jewel cases) for about $0.85/disc, so
100 blanks is about $85. With my hardware (2x), 100 copies of RH
would take about 63 hours. A 4x burner would do that in about 31.5
hours, and an 8x burner would do it in about 16 hours.

My friend bought a bunch of cds for $0.60 each, I'll ask him where he got
them this afternoon and report back

On a related note to burning cds, has anyone else had problems burning the
redhat 6.2 iso image? It fails during the fixating part and because of
that can't be used on any other cdrom but my cd burning (i've even tried
it on other cd burners to no avail) I wanted to send a copy to a friend
and burned it again and still had the same problem so I don't think my
friend will be able to use it on his cdrom. Any idea what's wrong? My
humble guess is maybe the size of the image combined with some cheap cds I
have may be the cause.

different sites, and I noticed that some of the images were different than
others (on had a disk label of " Image by Ralph"). I finally broke down and
just grabbed all of the directories and files and burned them to CD.

Wait. Let me just ponder this though for a minute. The words "RedHat" and
"no problems" used in the same sentence, I never thought I would see that :)

Now, now, Paul. Just because you have more trouble with Red Hat then the
rest of the LUG combined, doesn't mean you have to pick on them. ;-)

This is all a good thing as long as we don't lose sight of the fact that
one of our members and her company has spent $200 for Red Hat CD's plus an
additional amount of money for packets with the LBS show logo for
registrants to keep the info gathered as her part of sponsoring the Show. I
hate to diminish her contributions

I don't see this as diminishing Lori's contribution in any way. My
understanding was, based on what the registration web site mentioned, was that
the first 100 or so registrants recieved a free copy of the authentic RH 6.2
distribution.

We're proposing selling un-official distributions of choice at a slight profit
to make some money for GNHLUG. This money can then be used towards a meeting,
or, if not a substantial amount is earned, we all go out for Dinner that night
:)

Lori's contribution is used as an incentive to register. Once people are
there though, and they see what Linux can do, why not make available to them
the distribution of their choice at a very reasonable amount. This will give
them an incentive to then try Linux out, since it will be made at a price
affordable to all, and, we can ask them to register at the table in case they
didn't at the website. I can only see this as a positive thing.

We will have CD's from Red Hat, Caldera, SuSE, Mandrake, and maybe Turbo
Linux. How many? Who knows till we see the packages arrive. Certainly not
enough to hand out another 100.

Then we should definitely look into having a table with a few machines burning
more CDs, IMO.

How much does it cost for 100 blank CD's? How long to make 100 CD's? Which
distro do you make?

Well, my suggestion was to pre-burn a good number of the 4 or 5 major
distributions (probably more of the RHs than the others). Then burn on demand
at the show to backfill as they're bought.

100 CDs, you can probably get that on-line for less than $100.

A, well I never saw anything about charging for the disks. This is an
excellent idea

Well, of course it would be some small fee. Enough to cover the cost of the
blanks, and a little profit. I'd say $2 is a great price, or even $1.50.

Quoting Jerry Kubeck [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
This is also good and well, but who is paying for them? I already have over
$1,000 tied up in t-shirts and mugs. And then I am wondering how many do we
buy since we have no idea how many people will actually attend the show. My
original estimate was 275-350, but with the amount of press releases, and
signage I expect to do up until the show, we could have triple that. We are
now talking about another $200 or more.

That's the hard part.. ;-P Out of curiousity, are there going to be any
retailers there that might be able to combine the ideas that where presented
onlist? Seems to me presenting them with the idea of them buying 200 disks for
200$, and selling them off at $5.00 a pop would be a good buisness proposition
for them, and take care of distribution, taking it off of your hands..
