Re: [GOAJOURNO] On media responsibility (Letter in NT)

Dears,

Almost all , if not all, of the local TV news channels function illegally.
Why do we expect them to be 'responsible' when they are illegal ab initio?

The one who pays for the round , chooses the music. That seems to work even
in mainstream newspapers today. Except for the LP and GT [which pays for the
food], even restaurant food reviews are often very much biased by the facilty
given to the reviewer or the advertisements given to the newspaper. Those who
think that the Circulation Manager does not influence the editorial content in
Goa are only fooling themselves.

  ON MEDIA RESPONSIBILITY

From a letter in the NT Nov 17, 2006

I strongly believe that most of our local news channels are giving a
biased coverage on the political situation in Goa. Maybe the reason
for this is that they are funded by the BJP supporters with the sole
aim of giving the party and their Sangh Parivar cronies some publicity
in Goa.

They should learn to make good use of their right to Freedom of Speech and
Expression and understand the real meaning of media
responsibility. JERRY FERNANDES, Bardez

Please could you explain what you mean by the above.

Why do we expect them to be 'responsible' when they are illegal ab initio?

Wouldn't you agree that legal requirements and the requirements of
fair-play are two separate issues? For instance, the Indian Express
was reportedly caught in the drive in Delhi against having offices in
residential premises. But that doesn't mean it is not capable (or not
expected) to do good journalism. Which it does, fairly well, imho. FN
