Re: [Goanet] Please identify these fruits (another)
Joe Thank you for posting the photo for identification. I had been interested for the last few years to find out if this was available in India. I think this is MIMUSOPS BALATA. This little known fruit from the Sapotaceae family is also known as Achras balata with regional common names like Ausubo or Assapookoo. An effort is now under way to re-classify this as Manilkara bidentata. Asit K. Ghosh Rockledge, Florida, USA = Following 2 photos were taken in Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on 14th July, 2007. [Goanet] ESG announces Short Film Centre project on website
With the Memorandum of Understanding between the state and the central government for the International Film Festival of India 2008 still remaining to be signed, the Entertainment Society of Goa, challenging the supremacy of the directorate of film festivals over the organisation of the mega film event, has already posted its ambitious Short Film Centre project, on the ESG website. The ESG has further asked the applicants for the Short Film Centre to apply on-line at www.reelport.org or download the form at www.shortfilmcenter.org and send it to Short Film Centre, Maquinez Palace, Panaji, with the registration deadline being October 15, 2008, while the registration fee fixed is Rs 1,000 for Indians and USD 30 for non-Indians. IFFI 2008 is scheduled to be held in Goa from November 22 to December 2, later this year, and the period of organisation of the Short Film Centre will coincide with the IFFI period. The website of the directorate of film festivals, the major organiser of the mega film event, has however no mention of the Short Film Centre. Incidentally, the draft of the MoU for the IFFI 2008 as prepared by the state government and sent to the directorate of film festivals had provision for the Short Film Centre. However, the new MoU draft dated August 18, 2008, prepared by the DFF and forwarded to the state government by the section officer of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Mr K Ganesh has no provision for any Short Film Centre. It is learnt from reliable sources that the proposed Short Film Centre appears to be a replica of the Film Bazaar, the commercial component of the IFFI, and hence the DFF is not in favour of the same. The Short Film Centre, as envisaged by the ESG is a business platform being created at the International Film Festival of India for the first time in an effort to bring the short film makers, buyers, festival organisers and funding agencies on one single platform. Over 500 films are expected to be registered for the Short Film Centre of which 20 films will be selected for international competition and 10 films will be selected for Vasudha awards. The expected cost for the Short Film Centre is expected to be approximately Rs 26 lakh, with the prize money component of Rs 14 lakh as mentioned in the budget to be wholly sponsored. An ESG delegation led by the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, which is expected to leave for New Delhi later this month to sort out the differences with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting over the organisational powers for the IFFI, may face opposition for the Short Film Centre from the DFF authorities, more so as the ESG has already announced the project on its website without bothering to wait for the consent of the DFF and the signing of the Memorandum. [Goanet] BABUSH GIVEN ANOTHER 2 DAYS TO PROVE HIS SSC OR QUIT
Utt Goenkara has today extended to September 9th the deadline given to Mr. Atanasio Monserrate to prove his SSC or resign as Goa's Education Minister for having falsely filed an affidavit that he had passed S.S.C though he had not even completed 8th standard. Exactly 30 years ago on 7th September 1978, Mr. Monseratte had left St Theresa's High School at Bandra while in Std 8th and did not complete his S.S.C as falsely claimed by him in the Affidavit before the Election Commission. The 2 day extension to Utt Goenkara's deadline was to enable Mr. Monseratte to realize how serious an act he had committed by fudging his own educational qualifications and to give him another 48 hours to reflect on whether under the circumstances he had any moral authority to continue as Education Minister of Goa. Utt Goenkara activists would meet on September 10th at Panaji and finalise the plan of action to demand action against Mr. Monseratte if he fails to prove his SSC or resign as Education Minister. Mr. Monseratte should realize that money cannot buy everything and the Education Minister to come out clean and explain to the people of Goa as to why he had lied about his educational qualifications. The Education Minister being a public official, his acts are open to public scrutiny and Mr. Monseratte should not dodge the issue at hand by saying no comments or appropriate time. Utt Goenkara has invited Fr. Anthony Joseph, Headmaster of St Theresa's High School, Bandra to visit Goa with all the official records which prove beyond doubt that Mr. Monseratte had not even completed 8th Std. Re: [Goanet] the creeping culture of corruption in Goa.
When I read about reports on GoaNet about the average amount, in rupees, that Lamanis who operate illegaly on the tourist coastal belt in North Goa ( Calangute, Candolim and Baga ) have to pay the police , and the absence of any tourist police ( obviously once they have been paid off ) I cease to wonderhow much we Goans have imbibed the Indian standard operatingprocedure of hafta to to the police station , and carry on as usual. If Goans have any memory when the NDTV station conducted an interview on Baga beach with the locals and Scarlett Kealing`s mother, after her killing, an English woman tourist asserted that that she regularly saw the police on the beachside extract money from the illegal traders, the goan police officer at that TV interview seem unpreturbed by the accusation. I guess that our goan police officers beleive that like the rest of India it ishafta gheand business as usual ! You can bet if I could cc this message to the IG of Goa State police I would never get a response .
[Goanet] Gold silver articles/jewellery
Greetings! For a research paper exploring the Fading Art of Goan Gold and Silver Smithy, I'm looking for help/suggestions/contacts for the following: * List of museums/ trusts/ individuals/ jewellers who may help gain a historical perspective in the goan gold and silver smithy from 16th to early 20th century. * Old Jewellery houses/ museums/ individuals who may be able to help document the various jewellery styles techniques prevalent in the said period through examination of the relevant pieces that they possess as well as through their collection of old pictures historical texts. The intent is to assemble as much visual material as possible of Goan gold silver craft traditions that are extant in the various museums, Goan churches, aristocratic houses and private collections. This also includes photographs/illustrations of the related interest: fabrication process, fabrication units, trading process etc. In essence: besides Museums, am trying to trace people who may want to share their private collections for the documentation purposes. * List contacts of any surviving craftsmen/jewellers engaged in this trade will be especially helpful. Look fwd to your replies/inputs Rgds, Puja Bhargava (New Delhi)
Re: [Goanet] Manmohan lets Indians dow
From: Sandeep Heble [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] Manmohan lets Indians down I chose to counter the part where you averred that members of the Nehru clan would have dealt with the riots more sternly, a statement which, based on historical facts, appeared to be demonstrably false. Nobody in his/her right sense can deny that Emergency and the Anti-Sikh riots are amongst the darkest blots in Indian History if not the darkest and two members of the Nehru family, i.e. Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, not only presided over these gloomy periods but were (in)directly responsible for the same. True. Indira and Rajiv connived (or stood silently by) with communal forces whenever it suited them politically. The BJP, which encourages and sponsors communal forces and backs a communal ideology, is in a different class altogether. Won't go into detail as this topic has been discussed extensively on this forum earlier. I however do agree that riots were largely in check during Nehru's tenure but Nehru was fortunate to have been blessed with the iron ? hand of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, his home Minister. He wasn't so blessed, Vallabhbhai Patel died soon after Independence, in 1950. So for most of Nehru's reign as PM, he wasn't there. I think the credit for the peace in the early years of Independence goes to Nehru. On his daughter and grandson I agree with you. As also on Shivraj Patil and Manmohan Singh, who are plain incompetent. Manmohan's priority is chasing nuclear fantasies and converting India into a client state of the US. While Nehru's grand daughter-in-law has consistently received a lot of bouquets for the laudable achievements of the Government, it is therefore just and fair that along with Manmohan Singh, Sonia receives the due brickbats too! True, in fact she is responsible for comedians like Shivraj Patil and bureaucrats like Manmohan Singh occupying positions they cannot handle. -- Question everything -- Karl Marx
[Goanet] ORISSA: Hindutva's Violent History by Angana Chatterji
ORISSA : Hindutva's Violent History.by Angana Chatterji From Tehelka Magazine, Vol 5, Issue 35, Dated September 13, 2008 http://www.tehelka.com Hindutva's Violent History ANGANA CHATTERJI Anthropologist HINDUTVA'S PRODUCTION of culture and nation is often marked by savagery. On 23 August 2008, Lakshmanananda Saraswati, Orissa's Hindu nationalist icon, was murdered with four disciples in Jalespeta in Kandhamal district. State authorities alleged the attackers to be Maoists (and a group has subsequently claimed the murder). But the Sangh Parviar held the Christian community responsible, even though there is no evidence or history to suggest the armed mobilisation of Christian groups in Orissa. After the murder, the All India Christian Council stated: The Christian community in India abhors violence, condemns all acts of terrorism, and opposes groups of people taking the law into their own hands. Gouri Prasad Rath, General Secretary, VHP Orissa, stated: Christians have killed Swamiji. We will give a befitting reply. We would be forced to opt for violent protests if action is not taken against the killers. Following which, violence engulfed the district. Churches and Christian houses razed to the ground, frightened Christians hiding in the jungles or in relief camps. Officials record the death toll at 13, local leaders at 20, while the Asian Centre for Human Rights noted 50. The Sangh's history in postcolonial Orissa is long and violent. Virulent Hindutva campaigns against minority groups reverberated in Rourkela in 1964, Cuttack in 1968 and 1992, Bhadrak in 1986 and 1991, Soro in 1991. The Kandhamal riots were not unforeseen. Since 2000, the Sangh has been strengthened by the Bharatiya Janata Party's coalition government with the Biju Janata Dal. In October 2002, a Shiv Sena unit in Balasore district declared the formation of the first Hindu 'suicide squad'. In March 2006, Rath stated that the VHP believes that the security measures initiated by the Government [for protection of Hindus] are not adequate and hence Hindu society has taken the responsibility for it. The VHP has 1,25,000 primary workers in Orissa. The RSS operates 6,000 shakhas with a 1,50,000 plus cadre. The Bajrang Dal has 50,000 activists working in 200 akharas. BJP workers number above 4,50,000. BJP Mohila Morcha, Durga Vahini (7,000 outfits in 117 sites), and Rashtriya Sevika Samiti (80 centres) are three major Sangh women's organisations. BJP Yuva Morcha, Youth Wing, Adivasi Morcha and Mohila Morcha have a prominent base. Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh manages 171 trade unions with a cadre of 1,82,000. The 30,000-strong Bharatiya Kisan Sangh functions in 100 blocks. The Sangh also operates various trusts and branches of national and international institutions to aid fundraising, including Friends of Tribal Society, Samarpan Charitable Trust, Sookruti, Yasodha Sadan, and Odisha International Centre. Sectarian development and education are carried out by Ekal Vidyalayas, Vanavasi Kalyan Ashrams/Parishads (VKAs), Vivekananda Kendras, Shiksha Vikas Samitis and Sewa Bharatis — cementing the brickwork for hate and civil polarisation. This massive mobilisation has erupted in ugly incidents against both Christians and Muslims. In 1998, 5,000 Sangh activists allegedly attacked the Christian dominated Ramgiri-Udaygiri villages in Gajapati district, setting fire to 92 homes, a church, police station, and several government vehicles. Earlier, Sangh activists allegedly entered the local jail forcibly and burned two Christian prisoners to death. In 1999, Graham Staines, 58, an Australian missionary and his 10- and six-year-old sons were torched in Manoharpur village in Keonjhar. A Catholic nun, Jacqueline Mary was gangraped by men in Mayurbhanj and Arul Das, a Catholic priest, was murdered in Jamabani, Mayurbhanj, followed by the destruction of churches in Kandhamal. In 2002, the VHP converted 5,000 people to Hinduism. In 2003, the VKA organised a 15,000- member rally in Bhubaneswar, propagating that Adivasi (and Dalit) converts to Christianity be denied affirmative action. In 2004, seven women and a male pastor were forcibly tonsured in Kilipal, Jagatsinghpur district, and a social and economic boycott was imposed against them. A Catholic church was vandalised and the community targeted in Raikia. Change the cast, the story is still the same. 1998: A truck transporting cattle owned by a Muslim was looted and burned, the driver's aide beaten to death in Keonjhar district. 1999: Shiekh Rehman, a Muslim clothes merchant, was mutilated and burned to death in a public execution at the weekly market in Mayurbhanj. 2001: In Pitaipura village, Jagatsinghpur, Hindu communalists attempted to orchestrate a land-grab connected to a Muslim graveyard. On November 20, 2001, around 3,000 Hindu activists from nearby villages rioted. Muslim houses were torched, Muslim women were ill-treated, their property, including goats and other animals, stolen. 2005: In

[Goanet] Goans seek action against Orissa violence perpetrators
Navhind Times, 7 Sep 2008 --- Goans seek action against Orissa violence perpetrators NT NETWORK PANAJI: The Solidarity Meeting organised by the Council for Social Justice and Peace at Institute Menezes Braganza Art Gallery, Panaji on Saturday evening demanded a comprehensive probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader, Laxmanananda Saraswati. The council also demanded action against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its organs, especially the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and the Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram which have been allegedly spearheading the violence in Orissa against the Christian minority. The statement also insisted that the President, Ms Pratibha Patil should use her powers and gets the Union government to invoke Article 355 and if that fails to halt the violence, impose President's Rule under Article 356. The council also wants action against the officials involved in dereliction of duties during the violence and the setting up of fast track criminal court to try those found guilty at all levels during the violence. It wanted an investigation into all aspects of the anti-Christian violence, both in December 2007 and now in August-September. The general line of all the speakers throughout the meeting was that such riots keep on happening as the perpetrators are not punished and get away scot-free, thus emboldening them as well as the inaction of the governments whenever such incidents take place with even example being given of our state where it was alleged that the government has still not done anything to bring the perpetrators of the Sanvordem riots to justice. 'A great mass of Hindus have nothing to do with this and are horrified with what is happening in Orissa just as they were about what happened inn Gujarat,' Mr Vidyadhar Gadgil of the Citizens Initiative for Communal Harmony said and explained that what was happening was political mobilisation. 'This happened just before the elections in Gujarat and now as elections are due in Orissa it is happening there,' he argued and alleged that these incidents were not spontaneous but ground was prepared for it. He said that he would not like to absolve any political force as they either connive or stand aside while it happens and charged that the inaction of the state was a 'commonality in these situations.' He said that the intention of the brutality committed was to terrorise the minority community as well as the members of the majority community who do not subscribe to this violence. He felt that people get off scot-free at the behest of the political forces irrespective of the parties in power at that time. Mr Pravin Sabnis, architect and social activist said that majority and minority are nothing to do with the powers and privileges enjoyed but minorities can be of race, ethnic origin, language and script. He argued that it was not enough to have laws but important that laws have to be implemented. He said that because governance did not happen then, Orissa continued to burn with sectarian violence. Mr Asif Hussein from Vasco said that he had come here to show solidarity with the victims of communal violence in Orissa. 'It is the utter failure of the administration that even after 12 days they have not been able to contain what is happening in Orissa,' he said adding, 'It is very sad.' 'Action has to be taken against the perpetrators of the violence in Orissa and we have to be united in this irrespective of religion, caste and creed. India is a great country and people are great. It is a small majority that is creating the problem,' was the view of the moderator of the meet held in solidarity with the killing of Christians in Orissa, the ex-speaker and noted tiatrist, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo. He also criticised the silence of the government in this regard, informing that he himself had spoken to certain MLAs about the issue requesting them to condemn the same. Mr Avertanus D' Souza, ex-director of Caritas as well as the ex-director, Voluntary Health Association of India, criticised the intolerance of anti-socials and said that this was not the Hindu religion. --- TOI, 7 Sep 2008 Multi-faith meet calls for President's Rule in Orissa TIMES NEWS NETWORK Panaji: A multi-faith solidarity meeting on Saturday protested the violence in Orissa and demanded that the President of India invoke Article 355 of the Constitution to protect Orissa from internal aggression and if that fails to curb the violence, to invoke President's Rule in Orissa. Goa's Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao, who attended the multi-faith meeting organised by the church body, Council for Social Justice and Peace, did not address the gathering. The four main speakers of different faiths condemned the violence in Orissa and expressed solidarity with the victims. The statement supported the demands of the All India Christian Council. These include bringing a halt to the violence through disciplined police action;
Re: [Goanet] Fined for speaking Konkani
There are numerous advantages in speaking more than one language. Contrary to what people may think, studies have revealed that children are capable of learning many different languages at the same time very easily and excel in at least 2 of them. It is good that in Goa our children learn and speak so many languages. Goan Parents should not stop talking in Konkani to our children as Konkani is indeed the main marker of our Goan identity. Best wishes Paulo Colaco Dias. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:goanet- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Domnic Fernandes Sent: 06 September 2008 03:14 To: Goanet Goanet Subject: [Goanet] Fined for speaking Konkani Fr. Ephraim was the Boarding Headmaster of St. Anthony's High School in Monte de Guirim. He was the one who always strolled up and down the corridors of the school with a book in one hand and a cane in the other. It is true, we were not allowed to speak in Konkani and those who were caught were given cane-beating. Fr. Ephraim was a lefty. As soon as one was caught, he would ask him to stretch out his hand. He would then cane the student according to his mood. He mostly gave one cane on each hand, but if you moved away your hand and if he missed his shot, there was no count of canes - he would beat you everywhere! I was caught speaking Konkani only once. At around 8:00 pm, we were chatting in Konkani at the urinals which were quite far away from main corridors. We never expected Fr. Ephraim to come to that spot but there he was like a devil standing before us; his spectacles shining with reflection of light bulb. He looked at us and said: 'Come on; come on; show me your hand'. He gave two canes to Michael Botelho but only one for me; maybe because I was caught for the first time. I am a great lover of Konkani. I was very sad when I was not allowed to speak or read Konkani novels in the school.

[Goanet] Leisure boating looking up, marina at Goa likely by next year
Leisure boating looking up, marina at Goa likely by next year 7 Sep, 2008, 0957 hrs IST, PTI MUMBAI : Leisure boating and coastal cruising look set to gain momentum in the country with two Indian and a British company joining hands to set up a 'marina' in Goa which would cater to 400 boats. Leisure boating company, Aquasail, run by India's leading yatchman, Shakeel Kudrolli, Goa Yatch Haven promoted by Umaji Chowgule, and Britain's Walcon, a global leader in building marinas, plan to set up such a facility at Vasco in Goa. We are in the process of acquiring various approvals. If all goes well, we hope to have the marina up and running by October 2009, Aquasail's Managing Director, Shakeel Kudrolli, told PTI here. The investment in the facility, a first-of-its-kind in India, is pegged at around Rs 100 crore, Kudrolli said. The Chowgule company will invest the money and develop the facility while Aquasail will lend its expertise to the project, he said. This facility will provide a tremendous fillip to leisure boating and coastal cruising in the country, Kudrolli added. In India, the market so far was constrained as there were virtually no facilities for parking and servicing yatchs and leisure boats. Goa, with its vast coastline and tourist attractions is an ideal location for setting up such a facility, he said. Aquasail is presently engaged in promoting sailing and leisure boating through sailing schools, time-shares and also by directly marketing to corporates. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News_By_Industry/Services/Leisu re_boating_looking_up_marina_at_Goa_likely_by_next_year/articleshow/3454 559.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Twenty-fourth Sunday of the Year
6-Sept-2008 Dear Friend, We often grumble that life is not fair and we tend to keep a record of wrongs done to us by others. We even wait for the opportunity to get even and to hit back at those who have hurt us. If we are powerless, we even ask God to do the job for us! As believers we cannot live full and complete lives unless we forgive and forget our hurts. If not they eat into our physical and mental well-being. The more we are touched by God's forgiveness, the more ready will we be to forgive. Have a grateful weekend recalling the innumerable times we have been forgiven! -Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: 24th Sunday of the Year 'Called to forgive and forget!' 14-Sep-2008 Readings: Ecclesiasticus 27: 30- 28:7; Romans 14: 7-9; Matthew 18: 21-35; Writing in the second century Ben Sirach was still struggling with the problem that faced Israel for many centuries, namely the problem of divine retribution, and its evidence in the world. Is God a punishing God? Why do innocents suffer? How do we deal with those who hurt us? In today's first reading, Ben Sirach deals with the issue in a practical way. If people harm us we have not to retaliate but to forgive! In fact Ben Sirach suggests that our forgiving of one another articulates our own prayer for divine forgiveness. It is man's refusal to forgive which mounts up to mutual hatred and destruction. High Wind At Noon In his book High Wind at Noon, author Allen Knight Chalmers narrates the following story about Peer Holm. At one time Holm was a renowned engineer who had built great bridges, railroads and tunnels all over the world. But later because of failure and sickness, Holm was hardly able to eke out a living for his family. Holm had a neighbour with a very fierce dog, and he asked the man to do something about the danger it posed. The neighbour got angry and abusive. One day the very thing that Holm feared happened. The dog attacked his little daughter and she died from the wounds. The sheriff shot the dog and all the villagers became embittered against the owner. When sowing time came and all the fields were ploughed they refused to sell him grain. Without seed the farmer would go hungry and be reduced to poverty. However, Peer Holm could not let this happen. So early one morning he took his last bushel of barley and sowed his neighbour's field. Later, when the crop grew, it was obvious what had happened. Part of Holm's own field was bare, while his neighbour's field was green. That kind of forgiveness is not easy! Albert Cylwicki in 'His Word Resounds' In the second reading Paul reminds his readers that the way we live our lives has a repercussion on others as well. Our living and our dying depends on the Lord. To live fully is to live in and for the Lord and die a proper death is to die for the Lord. If we are living for him then hatred and anger have no place in our lives. The more we believe in Jesus the more we let his spirit govern and direct our lives. Thus the first requirement of living for the Lord requires that we live in peace, harmony and love, never letting evil behaviour influence us. Jesus Forgive Them Graham Staines, an Australian missionary, along with his family, was working among the social outcast lepers in the state of Orissa, India. On January 23, 1999, he along with his two little sons -Phillip and Timothy, were brutally burnt alive in their jeep by a group of Hindu fundamentalists led by one Dara Singh. The aftermath of this gory incident was nationally televised. What moved us to tears when we watched the TV was the sight of Mrs. Staines asking Jesus to forgive her husband's murderers. She prayed that Jesus might touch the hearts of these men so that they might not do to others what they had done to her husband and children. In the brutal murder of Graham Staines and his children by Dara Singh and his gang, we see the triumph of barbarism, and in the forgiveness of Mrs. Staines, we see the triumph of faith and goodness, we see in her forgiveness we see the triumph of the human spirit touched by Christ. John Rose in 'John's Sunday Homilies' In today's gospel we see Peter the head of the apostles wanting to check out with Jesus the teaching that he had given about forgiveness. He knew that Jesus had asked his disciples to forgive others, but there should be a limit to forgiving others, so he asks: How often should I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times? Seven was the perfect number, seven times over implied totality, completeness. Peter was not really being mean, in fact he thought he was very generous in being ready to forgive seven times, he implied: as often as God? The answer: Seventy times seven! There we have a clear statement from Jesus. There is no end to the number of times we must forgive our brothers - there can be no limit to our forgiveness, because there is no limit to loving. [Goanet] REVIEW: Small State, big attitude (Rahul Srivastava)
Small State, big attitude RAHUL SRIVASTAVA Goa may be a backpacker's paradise. But it also has one of the most cosmopolitan and heady public spheres, thanks to an engaging acceptance of eccentrics, ideologues as well as classical minds. Photo: Paul Noronha Vibrant and colourful: No fake identities here. Goa may be the smallest State on the Indian landscape but it has huge attitude. Its older, non-British colonial legacy stares at you defiantly the moment you step onto its red, iron-filled soil. Portuguese Christianity and Hinduism, mutants from long term association with each other, provide a solid base for its vibrant, even volatile intellectual atmosphere. The papers are saturated with opinions and it's easy to get involved in political debate on any street at any given point of day or night. While that may sound like an ordinary description of the sub-continent as a whole, consider this: Goa has managed to miraculously combine fiery news reportage, jingoistic editorials, reactionary anti-outsider rhetoric, half-hearted nods to secularism with highly informed environmental concerns, a pre-Marxist socialist rhetoric, genuine demonstration of religious co-existence (even if a wee bit grudging) and an amazingly cosmopolitan attitude to produce a heady public sphere that is more urbane than its relaxed, village-filled landscape lets you imagine. No wonder the State has managed to create a record of sorts in the realm of political activism, managing to stall SEZs and large-scale development projects (at least for the time being). Its political establishment may be as corrupt and communal as the rest of the country but it still manages to demonstrate a civil face when confronted with an agitated citizenry. Goa's intellectual history reflects a good amount of its contemporary glory via an expatriate population dispersed all over the country and the world. Its list of novelists, short-story writers, poets, historians and political commentators is long. A high literacy level, the eccentric and passionate love for learning that many communities aggressively fostered, a concentration of India's biggest fountainhead of urban modern education, the Church and the presence of institutions and public libraries that idealised learning, helped foster a lively context for intellectual practices. Greatest resource Surprisingly, what matches the length of intellectuals and artists of Goan origin are those from elsewhere who have adopted the State as their home. They continue to nourish its soil. Anyone who comes here immediately understands that the greatest resource the State has -- more than libraries and bandwidth -- is time itself. But time that is encased in throbbing and vibrant intellectual activity. This ability of providing oases of peace and tranquillity right in the middle of constant banter about politics and general hyperactivity (thanks to Goa's global tourism) is what attracts artists and intellectuals in large numbers. Such an architecture of space and time is organically linked to the way the State is organised, with its complex urban system of villages and townships, connected by roads and communication networks. However, at the end of the day, what makes it truly fertile is its ability of tolerating eccentrics, passionate ideologues and classical minds along with backpackers and other nomads. As long as no one invents fake Goan identities for themselves. That would be foolish and unnecessary -- after all it makes better sense to remain an eternal outsider -- a rare privilege in this retro modernist age of native, primordial identities. -- Rahul Srivastava is an urban anthropologist who also writes fiction for younger readers. He is based in Goa and Mumbai.
[Goanet] Tiatro NATTOK in Frankfurt Germany Vito [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Vito [EMAIL PROTECTED] NATTOK mesmerizes Frankfurt John D'Silva and his troupe, after making a premiere in London, landed in Frankfurt to put up his show in his brand new drama ‚NATTOK'. The hall was packed to capacity with people coming from far away places and John did not disappoint anybody. With a very entertaining, enthralling, emotional and lively story, backed-up by some very meaningful and melodious songs, the drama got going. But the highlight was the comedy. With John and Michael blossoming into a right comedy-duo, it was laughter-galore. If you believe in the saying 'laughter is the best medicine' then NATTOK is where its all about. One could actually see tears in the eyes from the audience because of the comedy. Everybody had words of praises for the actors and were rather disappointed that it had to come to an end. Never the less they left very satisfied. All this was due to the hard work of the president of the Goan Association Germany, The GAG who went to a lot of hardships to make this a reality. Mr. Francis D'silva from KDA-London played an important role in this too. He was very well backed by Jerome Simoes and the rest of the committee. A big thanks to Chico Fernandes (Merces) , Matano Gracias ( Mandur), PeterFernandes (Ambora) Agapito Cruz(Merces) and Mariano Pereira (Majorda) for all their support in cash and kind. John D'Silva commended the organizers and presented a small gift to them. So too the organizing committee, handed to every artist a gift and a certificate of appreciation. The President of GAG Vito Oliveira proposed the vote of thanks. Comments: I almost got choked with laughter. – AN Lovely story, no time waste, good songs unending comedy- VO A right dose of medicine for the full family – JS If you skip this Tiatr then you've missed something in life. A must for everyone. - MM Kudos to all the artists – a wonderful job done. – JB You don't have to undertake a laughter therapy, just watch Nattok. - GF Compiled by Avelar Nunes
[Goanet] Security agencies mull banning Sanatan Sanstha
Security agencies mull banning Sanatan Sanstha 6 Sep 2008, 0708 hrs IST, Mateen Hafeez ,TNN MUMBAI: The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and the state intelligence department (SID) are busy discussing if the Sanatan Sanstha, a Hindu revivalist group and sister organisation of the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti, can be banned. The ATS is conducting an in-depth probe into the affairs of the sanstha after a few of its sevaks were arrested for planting bombs in several places of the state. The ATS said members of the sanstha who were arrested included Ramesh Hanumant Gadkari (50), Mangesh Nikam (34), Santosh Angre (26), Dr Hemant Chalke (homoeopath ), Vikram Bhave (26) and patil Hari Bhau Divekar. We are in touch with the SID and the state public prosecutor . The ATS is taking legal opinion on this issue,'' said ATS joint commissioner of police Hemant Karkare. The ATS is also trying to ascertain whether there is enough evidence to ban the organisation, said an officer. On May 31, a bomb planted in the parking lot of Gadkari Rangayatan theatre exploded ; seven persons were injured in the blast. A play, Amhi Pachpute, was to be staged there. The sanstha had protested against the play saying that it showed Hindu gods and goddesses in poor light . We are busy comparing the evidence in this case with the law. If it fulfils all the requirements , then we will recommend a ban on the organisation . Discussions are on and the evidence is being examined ,'' said an officer. The arrested sevaks have also been booked for their alleged role in the Vishnu Bhave auditorium case in Vashi and for planting a bomb in a Panvel cinema. The ATS said Gadkari, Bhave and Nikam knew how to make bombs. They were all present when the bombs were being manufactured. During the interrogation, the accused said they collected the money from their savings. Moreover, Gadkari had sold his shop to become a fulltime sevak. While Gadkari and Angre stayed at Sanatan Ashram in Devat near Panvel , Nikam was arrested from Satara and Bhave was picked up from Wadala. The bombs were made at Bhave's house. The accused told the police that they hid some bomb-making material in Satara and Pen. During raids on the residence and fields of Vikram Bhave and Nikam in Warsai village of Pen (Raigad district ), the ATS seized two revolvers , a huge quantity of ammonium nitrate powder, 20 detonators, 19 gelatin sticks, timers, voltage meters, two radio circuits and remote controllers . Investigators said Hari Bhau Devkar was arrested for hiding and trying to destroy the explosives. The ATS formed 16 teams to detect the case and questioned more than 600 people in this connection. It was revealed that the accused had bought shrapnel from Panvel, eight timers from Lohar Chawl for Rs 550 each and even asked for a 5% discount. The batteries were bought from a shop in Grant Road. The circuits for the bombs were made by Gadkari who holds a diploma in electronics engineering. Detonators , gelatin sticks and ammonium nitrate were obtained from the city. Nikam and Dr Chalke were also involved in a Ratnagiri blast case of 2006 and were acquitted. Comment: This is the same HJS which has been taking the photo exhibition around Goa inciting hate and violence. I wonder why people like Vinay, Sachin, Rajan, Bhandare, Chari are all silent now. Selma was not off the mark completely when she commented that a whole generation of youngsters were being brought up on hate propaganda. Regards, Marshall
[Goanet] REVIEW: Goa : Aparanta : Land Beyond End. Book Review (Hindu)
http://www.hindu.com/mag/2009/09/17/stories/2006061750030100.htm Many histories ZERIN ANKLESARIA The various strands of Goa's composite culture are all strung together here. Rich architectural heritage: The interior of a Goan home (Photo reproduced from the book). We tend to think of Goa as a quaint Mediterranean outpost transported, by a quirk of history, to the shores of the Arabian Sea. This is erroneous, since Goa, or Govapuri or Aparanta as it was, is a land of many histories, outlined in the new and very prestigious tome on the subject. Within the last 50 years, exciting discoveries have been made of Early Stone Age tools, and in 1993 more than 120 tools of the Middle Paleolithic period were uncovered under a layer of debris in a cave, proof that it had been inhabited. Mesolithic rock carvings were also found in two locations, largely of animals, incised with such skill that they are still clearly identifiable as deer, ibexes, and so on. The prize find was a Megalithic Mother Goddess in granite, fully eight feet long and two and a half feet broad, holding a newborn baby. Eons later, in the time of the Chalukyas, a huge Ganesh idol was carved on a rock at Reddi, an image that is still an object of worship. In early times, Goa, known to Greek geographers as Arike, was the major port for its rich hinterland, and had a flourishing trade with sea-faring nations. A large number of gold coins are still turning up, originating from places as various as Rome, Venice, Arabia and Aksum, a major centre of Christianity in ancient Eritrea and Ethiopia. Arab traders had settled on the Konkan coast centuries before the Muslim conquests, probably dealing in horses, and African farmers in the first millennium A.D. used iron implements of Goan provenance. During the reign of the Kadambas, precious metals and cloth, food grain and spices were exported; also exotic items such as camphor, perfumes, elephant tusks and hippopotamus teeth for their supposed aphrodisiac qualities. Repressive interlude The 450 years of Portuguese rule were largely repressive. The infamous Inquisition was enforced for more than two centuries with greater severity than in the home country, and all manner of absurd restrictions were enforced with the idea of effecting cultural change. At weddings no songs could be sung, and the couple was not to be anointed in the traditional way. Newborn babies were no longer to be placed on raw rice, nor could their birth be celebrated with banquets. Dietary and sartorial rules decreed that salt must be cooked with rice, not subsequently added, and dhotis and cholis were proscribed. The planting of tulsi was also forbidden. But there were unintended benefits. Goa became the centre of a hybrid culture with an intellectual vitality that combined Brahmin scholarly traditions with those of Catholic priests, who came in large numbers. The fame of the Rome of the East spread throughout the Christian world, and the enclave acquired a distinctive character which helped it to assert its identity as a separate State after Liberation. Since then progress has been rapid despite political instability and rampant corruption. Goa is the most prosperous of our small States and its per capita income, at about Rs. 50,000 per annum, is the highest in India. The book seeks to be all-inclusive, covering the numerous strands of Goa's composite culture. Apart from history, there are essays on literature and language, architecture, the arts, Goan identity and much else, and a reviewer has to be ruthlessly selective. There are also aids to serious study such as an index, a glossary and an annotated bibliography. A detailed chapter is devoted to music, describing traditional forms such as the mando and the dulpod, and outlining the achievements of the Mangeshkar family, Kishori Amonkar and the inimitable Remo. That other famous Goan, Wendell Rodricks, is also here, contributing a fine essay on costumes and displaying some of his creations. In one, the model wears nothing above the waist except two mussel shells held precariously together with bits of string, and matching clam shell earrings. Though she dares to bare, would we dare to wear? One wonders. Gourmet cooking comes as naturally to Goans as music, and half a century ago the chefs in Bombay's leading hotels were all Goan. To have one at home was a potent status symbol, and the Malabar Hill dowagers would stoop to Byzantine intrigues to capture such a prize. So, if Mrs. A, having dined on light-as-air pastry and gut-churning vindaloo, succeeded in luring Francis into her kitchen with lavish inducements, Mrs. B, in aggrieved retaliation, would purloin Adeline, with matching offers, to keep an expert eye on her grandchildren. Mario Cabral e Sa writes with verve about famous foodies and their eccentricities. One wined and dined his guests on the choicest dishes and smoked Havana cigars which he lit with 100-rupee notes. At the other extreme Victorino, the doyen of
Re: [Goanet] All aboard for a royal ride
Philip, Goa will never get a proper airport if the decision is left to local politicians. The centre knows that if India is to develop, it requires massive expenditure on infrastructure. India desperately needs to build roads, airports and ports. Thankfully, the centre is not opposed to BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) projects. There are construction firms here in Canada ready to sign up for BOT projects in India. Personally, I would put a lot more trust in the feasibility studies of private firms who stand to lose financially if their traffic projections are wrong. Lastly, it always amazes me that residents of Goa do not complain about the medical services they receive/is available. If anything, the people of Goa should be demanding that their tax money is used to provide basic electricity, water and medical services. Let private companies take the risk of spending ,mega bucks on an airport that may or may not be economically feasible. Mervyn3.0 The double barrelled headline of a 100 col.cm report in TOI (7/9/08) is a dead give-away: 'Let investors decide on viability of Mopa airport': Centre's nod to Sindhudurg project will not affect Goa, say politicians. The first part shows that the govenment is not 'in control' while the second part underlines that it is assuming the hazardous ostrich position. The prospect for the people of Goa is indeed gloomy. __ Get a sneak peak at messages with a handy reading pane with All new Yahoo! Mail: http://ca.promos.yahoo.com/newmail/overview2/

[Goanet] O Dear Dears
Dears In Goanet Digest, Vol 3, Issue 1140: Roland Francis [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the thread A Need To Soothe the Mind whilst responding to some comments made by Miguel Braganza, made the following brutish comments: One more request: Please stop calling us dears, a kind of a gay, wimpish, transvestite-sounding word. I did try to search and see whether 'Dears'' has any gay connotation but could not. So apart from the fact that Roland wants to display his intolerance against gays, what he obviously is intending to do when he uses 'gay, wimpish, transvestite-sounding' to qualify the noun 'word' is to insult the person he is referring to. Roland wants to imply that he is 'gay, wimpish, and transvestite, just as when I use the adjective 'brutish' to qualify the noun 'comments' I am implying that it is Roland who is a brute. I bring this up because I too use the term frequently, and most particularly in my column in the Herald, Cheers Dears. Just as a matter of information, salutations such as Dear as in Dear Roland or in Konkani Mogall Roland, can be termed as phatic communication.[ See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phatic ] - It does not mean that Roland is Dear or Mogall to anyone except in some very special circumstances. When addressing large audiences in letters to newspapers or Internet mailing-lists, what should the salutation be? Should it be 'Dear Messieurs and Mesdames' or 'Dear Ladies and Gentlemen' or 'Dear Readers? I find these too archaic and stilted. Personally I like the convention that I use - Dears. Unlike with Roland, to me it sounds pleasant and nformal. And if someone says that the British or Americans don't use it, well just tell them where they can get off. And say that we Goans do. And BTW Roland, I happen to be married, and if you ever think I'm wimpish just make sure you never come close to my fists. [Goanet] The creeping culture of corruption in Goa.
Dear Sir, In 2001 my two brothers and our two cousins who live in Goa decided to demolish our ancestral house and build a modern flats. First of all we found that the house was in my father' name who had expired about three years ago. To get the house in our name it took us nearly three weeks of going to Margao cambra from early morning to late evening and nothing happened. Then our cousin said he found a person who would do the job for us but it would only be done if we bribed the officer and his peon.Out of desperation we agreed. We paid 500 rupees to the officer and 200 rupees to his peon, and this on our last day in Goa. Goanet used to be a very helpful community once :-) May I quote myself quoting someone else, in another context: 'The web's potential for good,' he says, 'stems from the open, collaborative and even communal culture it inherited from its birthplace in academia and from the counter-culture of the 1960s, combined with pre-industrial ingredients it has resurrected, folk culture and the commons as a shared basis for productive endeavour.' It is, in other words, 'a peculiar mixture of the academic, the hippie, the peasant and the geek'.
