Re: [Goanet] A debate....state of media in India today

2014-03-11 Thread Eugene Correia
Please don't take advise from those who don't know the ground realities in
Goa and India, in general, of the media scene.
The political editor of Open, one of best long-form mags in India, was
recently fired under political pressure. Ambanis has bought large shares in
Network 18, which owns IBN and Firstpost, the latter an internet portal
which has made a made in Indian media, just a Huffington Post has made a
mark in the US and has been doing well in Canada.

It's easy to say for those not working in the Goan media. I now some who
lost their jobs and it would be good to ask these guys the realities of
life outside the media. It's easy to hold Aires as a model. He's a lawyer
and has his own livelihood.

A protest is a legitimate weapon. Politicians should be aware that they
can't get away with saying nasty things. Parrikar's statement on the
salaries and intellectual capacities was hitting below the belt. True, its
good to take such things in stride. But, at the same time, make it known to
the person that such statements, made in a rush or just for the sake of
hitting out, can come back to bite.

I always felt that Aires is using RTI to good advantage. Unfortunately,
he's outside the media and has outlets which give him space. He is
regularly on Niz Goenkar, and Gomantak Times. Perhaps the piece he wrote on
Parrikar's two years in office was refused by Gomantak. He may have written
for OHeraldo in the past, but someone can let us know if he written for the
paper in the last two years or so.

The media circus in Goa is doing its best under trying circumstances.
Keep on doing what you are doing and don't mind the advice coming from
outside quarters.

[Goanet] POLICE DADA BJP on KONKAN STATEHOOD

2014-03-11 Thread jorge
Police Commissioner of Bombay.has said...if there is a Dada in the area,
it should be only the Police Inspector.but landmafia buildersmafia
slumlords in bombay have connections with police, administration, local
politicians..due to which the police inspector may turn a blind eye to
land grabbing in his jurisdiction.now which Dada in Bombay has the
powers to take action against the landmafia / buildersmafia /
slumlords...and which Dada has the powers to take action against MPs,
MLAs, Corporators who have encouraged the growth of slums in bombay by
rewarding land encroachers with voting rights, ration cards, water
connections, etc .and which Dada has the powers to protect the last few
bits of openspaces gardens playgrounds mangroves saltpanlands forestlands
in bombay from being encroached.and which Dada has the powers to
break
the builder-politician-babu nexus in bombay.but the solution to
the
problems of bombay are not in bombay.the solution is for the Indian
Government State governments to strictly enforce two child policy in
rural backward districts towns in India as well as improve
infrastructure agriculture industries manufacturing job-opportunities in
those areas then only will the migration from these areas stop into
bombay.when the migration stops then matters related to crimes,
corruption, slums, illegal-instructions, etc in bombay will also start
declining.

The native people (farmers tribals fisherfolks) of the entire konkan region
(bombay thane raigad ratnagiri sindhudurg districts) living in the
goathans, adivasipadas, koliwadas have been neglected due to the political
dominance of rich maratha politicians from western maharashtrathe BJP
is supporting the statehood for Vidharbha but if in the future the natives
of konkan also agitate for a separate Konkan statehood with bombay its
capital will the BJP support the agitation ? .

Property tax owners asociation in Bombay have given more importance in
opposing the capital value property tax of the bmc but not the 500 sq ft
rule..due to which those who own above 500 sq ft flats/houses will
receive hefty property tax bills even those whose flats/houses are old
dilapidated...before 2010 there was no 500 sq ft rule.

Dalits, Tribals, Mahars, etc in India will not have the same respect which
fair skin people like Upper castes Brahmins in India have.at the
moment there is no fairness cream through which a person who has
charcoal/dark type skin can become permanently fair.

India needs a political party whose vision mission agenda is to improve the
health wealth housing jobs land-holdings security of all citizens
irrespective of which religion/caste the citizens belongs to.

Pope Francis needs to change the position of the lay catholics in the
catholic church from Pay Pray Obey to a position of Partnership with the
catholic clergy in running of the Church and all its institutions. Amen.

[Goanet] Is the CM right in telling journalists not to publish articles creating 'disgust' against political system? (Times of India March 11th)

Is the CM right in telling journalists not to publish articles creating
'disgust' against political system? (Times of India March 11th)

TNN | Mar 11, 2014,

If a political system has a good or bad image depends on the politicians
who are running the system. The journalists are doing their jobs by writing
about the political system. The CM's remarks will impose unnecessary
restrictions on the working of the journalists.

Vandana Jog, lawyer, Ponda

We live in India, the world's largest democracy. If journalists begin to
fawn over politicians and play their fiddles according to political tunes,
we should get seriously worried. If a politician does a lot of U-turns and
disappoints the public by behaving like an autocrat then that's what will
get written. Politicians are elected to serve the people, and are
accountable for their actions. We expect the press to report truthfully on
politics, and in Goa we are proud our journos are doing that quite well.

Jose Lourenco, engineer, Margao

It is totally wrong. A chief minister should not make such remarks because
journalism is totally different from politics. Journalists should be given
total freedom to express themselves and report the truth correctly even if
the politicians do not agree with them. Journalists should hold independent
views and should not bow before politicians. Journalists and journalism
should be respected.

Vaicunth Pai Fondekar, socio-cultural activist, Margao

It is the duty of the press and reporters to hold politicians, bureaucrats
and all officers holding public office accountable in their public lives.
Occasionally, they may also hold them accountable in their personal lives,
especially when it has public relevance. I am not entirely sure what the CM
meant by his comment but I certainly agree that the press has a
responsibility to report events in a fair and unbiased manner giving a
balanced view of both sides of the story. Again, to tarnish all politicians
as being disgusting people is absolutely wrong and would certainly
discourage decent people from participating in the political process.
Finally, even if a majority of politicians are corrupt and indeed
disgusting people, the press has a responsibility to the minority group of
politicians who are giving invaluable service to people they represent.
Therefore, rather than making vague and anonymous allegations, the press
should have no fear in naming and shaming politicians who are guilty of
wrongdoing.

Eugene D'Silva, doctor, Panaji

CM to journos: Don't make people 'disgusted' with govt

TNN | Mar 10, 2014,

PANAJI: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has appealed to journalists to stop
publishing articles that create a sense of disgust among the public against
the political system.

Stating that the political system was the 'central pillar of the circus',
he said, The media should not create disgust among people, against
politicians and the system. It is okay to create anger against corrupt
politicians, but if the public becomes disgusted and disillusioned with the
political system itself, India will turn into Egypt, he said.

Parrikar was speaking at a seminar on 'Conscientious Reporting' organized
by the Goa union of journalists(GUJ) in Panaji on Sunday.

He also remarked that the media's critical coverage of politics was bound
to discourage 'good people' from joining politics. Given a second chance,
I will not enter politics. I am a very good engineer, and could have minted
money in another profession. It was under compulsion that I was pushed into
this line, he claimed.

The seminar comes hardly a week after the GUJ slammed Parrikar for his
disparaging comments against Goan media persons, wherein he said that
journalists were not great thinkers or intellectuals, and accused them of
biased reporting. They seem to have made up since then, after Parrikar
reportedly expressed regret over his off-the-cuff comments. Parrikar chose
to re-iterate his stand, albeit in a more diplomatic way. The
understanding capacity of reporters and quality of reportage is coming
down. Journalists are reporting matters that they only understand in a
physical sense, he said cryptically, requesting news organizations to
ensure that 'The truth is not sacrificed at the altar of breaking news'.

Several other speakers, including veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar and
former Newsweek UN bureau chief Patricia J Pereira Sethi, spoke on issues
like the corporatization of media organizations, paid news and opinionated
reportage.

Leading criminal lawyer Ujjwal Nikam called for media organizations to have
self-regulatory measures.

Since we have non-journalists wanting to tell those in the media how to go
about their jobs, it would be better to invite such people by Goan
newspapers to experiment as Newswhip did.

[Goanet] Misinformation of the radiation from mobile towers

2014-03-11 Thread Gerard Delaney
Last year, a small group of Saliganvkars created awareness in the
Lourdes Convent school hall about the alleged dangers of the radiation
from Mobile towers by showing a PP presentation of the so called expert
Prof. Girish Kumar. The same presentation was used again for a much
bigger group of villagers in Gladstone Ribeiro Sa's house and as a
result the construction of the mobile tower by Dmello Telepower Pvt Ltd
in Saligao was forced to stop.
When 6 of the leaders had met in my (Gerard Delaney's) house after the
Lourdes convent program, I had clearly explained to them how this Prof.
Girish Kumar was using his position to create fear in the minds of the
public about the radiation and thereby helping his daughter's business
of selling meters to measure radiation and shields for it. I had even
explained that the average frequency of light is one million times
greater than that of microwave radiation. Hence according to the well
established laws of Physics, light has energy greater than that of
microwave radiation by one million. Thus it is ridiculous to be afraid
of microwave radiation and not of visible light radiation which is one
million times stronger! *However, what transcribed during the meeting,
was never released to the general public by the leaders of the agitation.*
Now a special panel of 13 members set up by the DoT in keeping with the
Allahabad High Court's orders, has exposed the misdeeds of the
Professor and affirmed that there is no danger to the health from the
radiations emitted by mobile towers. Read about this at:

*Deccan Herald dated 25**^th **of February 2014*

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/388471/radiation-fears-mobile-towers-unfounded.html

/Rejecting the contention of electrical engineering professor Girish
Kumar, the 13-member panel said Kumar repeatedly red-flagged these
concern in the media because of his family's commercial interest in

[Goanet] India to slash Iran oil imports

2014-03-11 Thread Tim de Mello
India will cut its oil imports from Iran by nearly two-thirds from the first
quarter after the US asked it to hold the shipments at end-2013 levels, Reuters
reported. The move is in keeping with the nuclear deal easing sanctions on
Tehran, Indian government sources said. India, with the increases already made
in the January-March loading plans from Iran, has to cut its purchases of the
crude to about 110,000 barrels per day to drop its intake average to 195,000
bpd for the six months to July 20.

This will impact petrol prices adversely in India.

How will the US compensate India for this?

Re: [Goanet] Misinformation of the radiation from mobile towers

2014-03-11 Thread Santosh Helekar
Thanks Gerard for sharing this information. It is important to counter these
bogus scares that crop up from time to time by educating people about basic
scientific concepts. Underlying these scares there invariably is some
commercial scam or MLM-type fraud being perpetrated.

Cheers,

Santosh

Kumar, the 13-member panel said Kumar repeatedly red-flagged these
concern in the media because of his family's commercial interest in
companies involved in manufacturing radiation-shielding products.
