[Goanet] Newspapers on line: My personal observations

2017-01-31 Thread Stephen Dias
-In these days of election fever people tend to go online early morning
to read news papers but unfortunately no newspapers starts till 7 AM or
sometimes even late except Navhind Times which starts early in the
morning, and the last is Gomantak Times.
Heraldo is the second to appear on line after Navhind Times.
Hope they will improve in days to come, as people are excited to know the
elections news.
My friends in foreign countries tells me why your local papers are still
sleeping.
Once just recently it so happen that in one of the local paper one
Independent candidate photo appeared on line in a Add.box and was removed
soon. But never appeared in hard copy. The name of the candidate is Helena
Lourenco Independent.from St Cruz.
Such thing should not happened. This shows a bad performance of that
particular paper.

[Goanet] Respect political vounteers

2017-01-31 Thread Sandeep Heble
Does one have to graduate from being a chaiwallah to a PM to get some kind
of a respect or recognition? Aren’t we a Nation of equals? This is not to
support any political party or individual or formation but just to express
disappointment over the sheer double standards that are visible on display
today. When a Modi or a Gadkari or a Rahul Gandhi come to campaign, they
become Modi-ji or Garkari-ji or a Rahul-ji and it then becomes a privilege
to post selfies with them or of their rallies in Social media. But when
ordinary people come from outstation to campaign, there is a big problem.
Why? Are these people lesser mortals? India is a Land where spiritual
leaders like Swami Vivekananda walked in simple clothing and captured the
imagination of the World. If the hostility to such ordinary people is just
to get into the good books of the high and the mighty and the powerful, it
is indeed sad. Has the Nation become so subservient to money and power that
it is losing its sense of ethics, direction and morality?

[Goanet] CPI-M Goa Election Appeal

2017-01-31 Thread Thalmann Pereira
*CPI-M Goa Election Appeal*

The Goa State Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of India
(Marxist) has issued the following Appeal to the Electorate in Goa :

Elections to the State Assembly of Goa will be held on Saturday 4th
February 2017.

In Goa, the BJP-MGP coalition government which took office in March 2012,
has been indulging in communal and casteist politics. The Dalit and the
Tribal people of Goa, as also the OBC's have been at the receiving end of
this caste - communal ruling dispensation.

Consistent attempts, both overt and covert, were being consistently made by
these caste - communal forces by trying to misuse the language of school
instruction issue.

All this was systematically done to cover up their corruption and outright
loot of the public exchequer.

However, just weeks before the election, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party
(MGP) has walked out of the coalition. There is an alternative right
coalition consisting of the MGP, Shiv Sena and Goa Suraksha Manch led by a
former RSS chief.

Moreover, after the two and a half years of the Modi government at the
centre and the palpable failure to deliver jobs and development, the shine
of the BJP is considerably reduced.

Under such circumstances, *the key electoral task* is to ensure the total
defeat of the caste - communal ruling dispensation which has played further
havoc with the lives of the ordinary citizens of Goa by resorting to
corruption and nepotism.

A one to one contest in each of the 40 constituencies against the BJP and
also against the alternative caste-communal alliance, was very much the
need of the hour.

The CPI(M) and the Left parties are not a major force in Goa.

Keeping in tune with this ground reality, that even 300 odd votes could
make a difference between victory or defeat for the central electoral task,
the CPI-M decided not to field any candidates in these elections.

The CPI-M has consistently worked for the working unity of all the anti -
BJP forces at the ground level.

Unfortunately, the AAP and the Congress parties have both refused to see
plain and simple reason, both being blinded by their illogical conclusions
of coming to power by themselves, when the fact of the reality is that
neither of them could even find the 40 candidates (by their own "lofty"
standards) to field in each of the 40 candidates.

This arrogance of going it alone, when being unable to find even 40
candidates, exposes the hollow Go-it-Alone claims of both the AAP and the
Congress parties.

The CPI-M is conscious of the fact that two candidates of the CPI and many
other honest and progressive candidates (individually or party - based) are
in the fray, in the various constituencies.

*However, this particular election is not the place for minor skirmishes
on the sidelines.*

*The only criteria that can be implemented is, therefore, to proceed
constituency-wise to locate the strongest anti-BJP and anti-MGP candidate
in each of the 40 constituencies.*

Though such a course of practical action is not likely to result in
throwing up the name of a candidate acceptable to all the progressive and
secular forces, nevertheless, given the shortcomings of the actual
situation, such a course of action is the only possible one to prevent the
split of the secular - progressive vote, and to ensure the overall defeat
of the caste - communal forces.

Keeping this in mind, the CPI-M calls upon the progressive, democratic and
secular people of Goa to *vote and elect the "strongest secular candidate"
in each of the 40 constituencies.*

Over the next two days, the CPI-M will identify the "strongest secular
candidate" in each of the 40 constituencies and call upon the people to
vote for them.

All other battles against corruption and the anti-people policies will be
continued consistently over the next five years, so as to serve the true
interests of the people.

The CPI-M underlines the need to conduct a sustained campaign to expose the
reactionary communal character of the BJP and the onslaughts unleashed on
the people by the Modi government.

The flagrant abuse of official power by the ruling BJP-led dispensation and
their shameless corruption and nepotism as also the harassment of the
common citizens, all need to be decisively defeated in the coming
elections.

All the resources are to be marshaled to defeat the BJP in the forthcoming
elections.

(Released to the media on 31st January 2017).

Secretary
CPI-M (Goa State Organizing Committee).

Come elections.minorities are important

Minorities are only vote bank material. They are wanted, highlighted, much
sort after once on 5 years. They are ridiculed, chided as non patriotic and
blatantly asked to move to country of religious origin, Minorities are
less selfish and need no certificates from politicians on fundamentals of
patriotism .They have excelled in defense forces over the ages and left
indelible imprints of supreme sacrifices and served the Nation ,conscious
of their duties. The educational Institutes, Charitable outlets, and Medical
care and nursing facilities peak out loud and clear, The service to
downtrodden of all ages and sex need no comments and elaboration. Many
politicians were educated in our prestigious Institutes and constantly seek
admissions, sending recommendations for favours. It is a pity that some
short sighted religious persons are seen hobnobbing closely with
politicians for personal gains and which act is not considered favourably
by laity, . After elections our authorities are seen in close proximity
with the powers that be, irrespective of their character and credibility,
Now all sins are forgiven and friendship is the buzz word for the good of
the community It is a double standard of sorts

One incident that has left permanent blemish on minority values is the raid
on Velim .Church It was a sort of public insinuation and defamatory nature
that the religious places are safe store houses for distributions to
influence the voters. 5 years down the lane, it is not clear as to who
ordered these despicable raids after sun down. It is another matter that
nothing was found, even though slanted news was floated about shifting the
booty in anticipation. The church authorities have not vehemently protested
this most uncharitable act, though Velim Citizens fortunately did not take
it lying own in protecting their honour and those of their religious
leaders. For this valiant act many have suffered and continue to suffer the
consequences being embroiled in court cases The voters must awake to show
such conspirators the door, even though they appear to be harmless wolves
in sheep`s clothing

Our Educational Institutes in Goa are under constant threats and
interference unnecessarily needling their smooth function guaranteed by
Constitution The Income tax short notice to all church organization to
disclose the accounts with details of denomination of notes was selective
and discriminatory. The church complied quickly without standing in
defense to the shock and surprise of tax authorities within the shortest
period without arguing about its privileges and rights., None of the
political members of our community uttered a word in protest but upheld the
absolute right of tax authorities. It is time now to show firmly and
decisively our disgust and apprehensions about selective harassment and
insinuations meted out to the minority community

Immigration – a Taboo word

Two major world events from 2016; namely Brexit on June 23rd and the US
Presidential Election on 8th November were both won using Immigration as a fear
factor. The irony of the events was the fact that Nigel Farage of the UK and
Donald Trump were both descendants of refugees or immigrants. Nigel Farage is
said to be descended from French Huguenots whereas Trump has German (paternal)
and Scottish ancestry (through his mother who worked as a domestic in the US).
Keeping aside the abhorrence many feel against Trump it is indeed a great
achievement that the son of a former domestic and immigrant is now holding ‘the
most important position in the world’.

These individuals very cleverly appealed to the silent communities who blamed
new comers for their own complacency or inadequacies. These silent communities
conveniently forgot that they were also descended from Immigrants who chose to
move away from their natural habitats. Immigration and its pros and cons would
require to be written in book form as there is much to discuss. My thoughts are
about the selfishness and anger expressed by our own small Goan community and
worse of all by these Immigrants themselves.

Goa as we known had been a jewel in the Portuguese crown and had been an
important outpost for trade but sadly after the collapse of the Portuguese
empire in the 1600s - had ceased to become a lucrative area for trade. Also by
that time other trade routes had been established. Times must have been
difficult for the locals who had lost the privileges enjoyed during the Golden
Era – hence the only alternative to make a better life was through Immigration.

In the absence of records it is hard to research when the initial migrants
moved out of Goa to make a life in the Subcontinent of India and beyond. So we
keep a bench mark of the 1700s when we have official records which indicate
that Goans Christians moved to more established cities like Bombay, Calcutta,
Lucknow, Cawnpore (Kanpur) etc. With the establishment of the East India
Company – some of the Goan Christians were best placed to take on the more
menial roles for the British as they were not bound by the taboos of handling
beef and pork which was prevalent by the major faiths of India – Hinduism and
Islam. This they did diligently and owing to their honesty and loyalty were
greatly appreciated by the employers. The ones from more privileged backgrounds
were encouraged to take up higher education and these bore fruits in their rise
through the ranks to positions just under the British. The railways and their
posts were also other areas where the Goans services were utilised.

A branch of my own ancestors are known to have been in British India in the
early 1800s and that is where they are said to have made their wealth. They
returned to Goa and built a home in Siolim. A daughter then married an
individual who was a part of another enterprising group known to have landed in
the small fishing village known as Kurrachee (Karachi – now one of the largest
cities in South Asia). These enterprising men started trading whilst a few
others sought employment with the stationed British. Along this time – there
were also workers from Goa who were employed to cook, wait and clean for the
British. Interestingly, many of these people including single men with good
jobs were known to live in ‘Chummeries’ or ‘Coors’ – which were shared
accommodation. These individuals after having been well established would
return to Goa – get married and return with their newly-wed wife to which ever
city they were established and take on separate premises. This pattern has
continued over the years during the wave of immigration to British and
Portuguese Africas in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Gulf States in the
1960s and to the present day with many stationed in places like Swindon and
Wembley in the UK. This way of life which was deemed acceptable years ago is
now being vilified by many of our fellow Goans possibly jealous that their
fellow villager or somebody not belonging to their social status was taking
this step to improve their status back in Goa.

Some of these Goans who live in humble accommodation in the UK have gone back
to their villages and have invested by building large villas. They have hopes
someday to return home to their beloved Goa. I feel very proud of these people
who despite the odds are making efforts to better their stock and their lives.

Many people are unaware that immigration of Goans to the UK has been going on
for centuries and not decades. The first known settlers are known to have come
aboard ships working as ship hands sometime in the late 1700s. Many of these
ship workers remained and lived in some of the more deprived areas of
Liverpool, and London. These in turn integrated with the local communities and
their descendants still bear the surnames de Souza, Fernandes etc. One might
argue that these

[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE: Government of India considers Goenchi Mati Proposal

2017-01-31 Thread Roxanne Coutinho
*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *

Date of release: 31-Jan-2017

*Goenchi Mati Movement pleased with Government of India consideration of
its proposal*

*GOA (31-Jan-2017)*: The Goenchi Mati Movement is pleased with the
Government of India’s serious consideration of the ideas in its proposal
based on Public Trust Doctrine and the principle of Intergenerational
Equity.

The Economic Survey of India (2016-17) released by the Finance Minister in
Parliament today recognises the implications of the Supreme Court judgement
in the Goa Mining case: that natural resources are a shared inheritance
that need to be preserved for future generations, and that in the case of
sub-soil minerals, the states are trustees on behalf of the people.

The report explores the value of saving money from minerals in a
non-wasting asset such as a permanent fund, and redistributing any real
income to citizens. It emphasizes the importance of considering creative
responses to avoid the risks and costs associated with the “natural
resource curse.”

The report acknowledges the inputs of Rahul Basu from the Goenchi Mati
Movement. The following quotes are taken from Chapter 13 of the report (The
‘Other Indias’: Two Analytical Narratives (Redistributive and Natural
Resources) on States’ Development).

"*13.46 One way to increase citizens’ participation is via creation of a
dedicated Fund to which all mining revenue must accrue. The assumption here
is that minerals are part of the commons, owned by the state as trustee for
the people – including future generations. Therefore, the revenue from the
natural resources should be saved in a non-wasting asset- in a Permanent
Fund. The real income accrued by the Fund can be redistributed to citizens
affected by and having a stake in the extraction of the resource. (Box 1)"*

*"13.49 These measures have never been tried in India. But permanent funds
have been utilised effectively in many other countries, while pilot
projects for UBI are beginning. Introducing these mechanisms in India could
be contemplated, if only because their risks seem small compared with the
costs that would accrue if the "natural resource curse" materialised on
Indian soil, as it has in so many other countries around the world. *

*"13.50 In sum, large bounties-either in the form of redistributed
resources or natural resources- can create surprising pathologies, even in
democratic India. Recognizing and responding to them creatively will be
important to avoid making the errors of history.*

*"Box 1: Supreme Court of India Judgement on Goa Mining*

*The judgment of the Supreme Court of India in WP 435/2012 (Goa Foundation
vs UoI & Ors, the Goa mining case), was the culmination of a series of
landmark judgements on the subject of managing natural resources in public
domain. In this case, the apex court ordered a cap on mining as well as the
creation of a Goan Iron Ore Permanent Fund to meet the ends of
inter-generational equity and sustainable development. When considered
along with earlier SC judgments on the public trust doctrine, notably CA
4154/2000 (Fomento Resorts & Anr vs Minguel Martins & Ors), and on the
disposal of natural resources, notably WP 423/2010 (CPIL & Ors vs UoI &
Ors, the 2G spectrum case), a new picture emerges for minerals.*

*What implications does the SC judgment carry for natural resource
management?*

*Natural resources, including minerals, are a shared inheritance that needs
to be preserved for future generations. As sub-soil minerals are largely
owned by the States, and offshore minerals by the Centre, the states are
the trustees on behalf of the people. The cap on mining in Goa is to ensure
the availability of minerals over several generations as well as to limit
the environmental damage from permitted extraction.*

*The proposal for exploring the creation of a Goan Iron Ore Permanent Fund
is notable for being the first that has potential to be established by

considering implementing the core principles of the Goenchi Mati Movement.
We hope the people and the politicians of Goa also keep the use of our

Claude Alvares of the Goa Foundation said that “the mention of the
Permanent Fund proposals in the Economic Survey now indicates that though
Goa was the first state to get such a Fund – because of the judgement in
the Goa Foundation mining case – the idea of such a Fund is now being
considered for all other states as well. This is a great contribution from
Goa to the people of this country.”

Mr. Helekar,

I appreciate the link.

The Telegraph link says: 'Oleg Erovinkin was an Ex KGB chief *suspected* of
of helping the former MI6 spy Christopher Steele to compile his dossier on
Donald Trump *may have been* murdered by the Kremlin and his death covered
up. Oleg Erovinkin, a former general in the KGB and its successor the FSB,
was found dead in the back of his car in Moscow on Boxing Day in mysterious
circumstances.'

It is said Oleg Erovinkin was found dead on DECEMBER 26, 2016 in the back
seat of his Lexus sedan car, apparently had a driver?

The dossier was handed over to the FBI in AUGUST 2016 who sat on it and
instead continued investigating Clinton. The former intelligence official
grew concerned that there was a cover-up in progress. On a trip to New York
in October, he was persuaded to tell his story to David Corn, the
Washington editor of Mother Jones, who first reported the existence of the
material on 31 OCTOBER 2016. Later, the information was also passed from
the former MI6 agent to John McCain through an intermediary. McCain then
handed the document over to FBI Director James Comey. Obama and Biden were
briefed on this but then President elect Donald Trump denied he was briefed
but said the contents of the dossier were not true. (Donald Trump calls the
unverified documents ‘fake news’ leaked by ‘sick people’ during his first
press conference as President-elect)
Check the link below, makes a good reading:

The British Intelligence is hiding Steele, so how difficult is it for them
to ask Steele to name his 'source' and end the speculation or is this the
way the media operates?

Dear jc,

I did not refer to W. Post but what Cohen wrote on the Post. (The
mainstream media: The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Boston
Globe, The Los Angeles Time, ABC, CBS CNN, NBC, MSNBC, PBS, Yahoo News,
BBC, The Guardian etc.) Fox, NY Post, DM Online, RT seem to be somewhat
exceptions. Surprisingly, these days WAPO is missing in news.google.com!

In the run-up to the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, Cohen was a member of Committee
for the Liberation of Iraq, a group of prominent persons who pressed for an
invasion. Cohen may also have advocated regime change in Iran. On 2 March
2007, Cohen was appointed by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to serve
as Counselor of the State Department under George W. Bush administration
and served from 2007-2009.

Cohen was a leading voice of opposition to Trump among former GOP national
security officials during the campaign. During his campaign, Donald Trump
outlined numerous foreign policies that depart dramatically from those of
President Obama — and long-standing U.S. positions in some cases. Mainly:
"The United States is going to abandon its decades of policies promoting
regime change in countries around the world," Trump told a rally in
Fayetteville in the US state of North Carolina. “We will stop racing to
topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about that we shouldn’t be
involved with. This destructive cycle of intervention and chaos must
finally come to an end.” The president-elect Trump gave 'a commitment to
engage the use of military forces only when it is in the…interests of the
United States.' "We want to strengthen old friendships and seek out new
friendships… … We seek harmony and goodwill among the nations of the
world,” he said. He has been working diligently on his campaign promises.
Hoping for the best and peace in the world.

Last December, the United States and nearly 200 other countries adopted the
world’s first pact to limit emissions of gases that nearly all scientists
say are warming the planet. Trump — who has called climate change a "hoax"
— has vowed to renegotiate the deal. Need to study more on this Climate
Change and Global Warming.

[Goanet] Fifth Sunday of the Year

2017-01-31 Thread Jude Botelho
31-Jan-2017
Dear Friend,
Often when talking of believers, we talk of a ‘practicing catholic’ as one who
attends Sunday mass, as though practicing the faith meant only regular
attendance in church! Perhaps for some believers their faith begins and ends
with performing their Sunday obligation. But true faith is seen not merely in
the observance of ritual practices and obligations but in witnessing to our
faith in fulfilling our social obligations towards others. May His word prod us
to action. Have a ‘concern-filled’ weekend! –Fr. Jude
Sun Ref. Fifth Sunday: ‘You are light of the world! Are you enlightening?’
5-Feb-2017Isaiah 58: 07-10;          1 Cor. 2: 1-5;          Matt. 5: 1-12;

In the first reading from Isaiah, the prophet speaks plainly about what is
expected of the true believer. In earlier Jewish history, fasting and fast days
were part of the liturgy, in which rich and poor ‘humbled’ themselves before
God. The rich fasted and expected a divine reply in the form of greater
prosperity. They asked why God did not answer their prayer. In today’s reading
the prophet tells them that for fasting to be acceptable to God it must be
meaningful. Genuine fast before God requires the social awareness and concern
spelled out by the prophet. “Share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the
homeless poor, clothe the man you see naked….then your light will shine like
the dawn.” It is by such actions that genuine worship gives glory to God.
Be not simply good…Alexander Solzhenitsyn recalls, as he says, ‘with shame’, an
incident he witnessed when he was captain in the Russian army. “One day I saw a
sergeant of the secret police on horseback, using a whip on a Russian soldier
who had been captured serving in a German unit. The man, naked from the waist
up, was staggering under the blows, his body covered in blood. Suddenly he saw
me and cried out: “Mister Captain, save me!” “Any officer in any army in the
world should have put a stop to this torture, but I was a coward. I said
nothing, I did nothing. This picture has remained in my mind ever since.” He
could have brought light into a dark situation but he didn’t. “Be not simply
good”, says Thoreau, “be good for something.”Flor McCarthy in ‘New Sunday and
Holy Day Liturgies’
Today’s gospel speaks of the practical implications of being followers of Jesus
Christ. Jesus uses simple images which would be easily understood by his
Palestinian followers. “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the
world.” His listeners knew how essential salt was in those days. In fact people
traded in salt as they traded in silver and gold. Salt was essential to flavour
and preserve food. Its absence in food was immediately noticeable. Light too
played an essential function of enlightening, guiding, and making ordinary
tasks possible. What Jesus is saying through these images is that his disciples
have an essential function to play in the world. When Jesus spoke of letting
our light shine among men he was not speaking of parading our good works, or of
attracting attention to ourselves. Our good deeds should inspire others to do
what needs to be done in their own lives. Our deeds do not have to be
spectacular because even little deeds done regularly can make a difference in
peoples’ lives. As Christians we have a very positive role to play in the
world. Shedding light and witnessing to the light not only makes people see
things clearly but it also puts our own life under the spot light; we can be
vulnerable and exposed. Just as salt is worthless if it loses its saltiness and
light is useless if it is kept under covers, so the Christian life is
meaningless unless faith is witnessed in love and concern for others. Religion
is no private affair between me and my God. Our lives have to impact others and
lead them to God.
“Mr. Lincoln has left his lights on”A mother and her small child once drove
past the restored home of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield. It was night and the
national shrine of the United States was brightly lit. “Look mama,” the child
said excitedly, “Mr. Lincoln has left his lights on.” The mother smiled. “Yes”
she replied; “he left them on for the whole world to see.” Although Lincoln has
been dead since 1865, he is still a tremendous inspiration to all people. But
in a much more true sense Christ, ‘God from God, Light from Light’ remains and
will remain to the end the shining beacon for all peoples of all times. Christ
has shared his light with us his disciples and asks us to be what we are: “the
light of the world.”Vima Dasan
As Dear as SaltAn aged king who had three sons decided to choose his successor.
To test his heirs he inquired how much they loved him. “More than the world’s
wealth!” exclaimed the first. The second declared. “Greater than all the wisdom
the world holds!” The youngest said, “As dear as salt.” Infuriated, the king
exiled him and bequeathed the kingdom to his eldest son. Later,

It is a shame that young Goans spend only one day to clean their towns and

are non existent except when it comes to sale of land and that in fraudulent

A rare positive article about Goa and Goans on Goanet. ?Way to go Lisa and your
co-volunteers. ?Goa badly needs volunteers.Volunteer groups exists worldwide
except in our bangarchem Goem.
Many veteran Goannetters would rather write the usual crabby article and demand
the Prime Minister of India do something about cleaning the road.

Your article / story shows what can be done by even a few working together
including breaking down caste barriers which Goanetters are very fond of
talking about. ?I really like the ripple effects of your action on the
community and government officials.
Your group is a great role model for the state and should be widely commended.
?Hope your actions made it on the local TV news.

There were doubts about Aspartame for the last decade or so, ever since it was
suspiciously allowed to be used by the FDA.

We have a scientist on this Forum who would vociferously defend the innocence
of Aspartame. Wonder if could comment on these research findings.

[Goanet] Sanskrit influence on names worldwide (specially in South Asia)

2017-01-31 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या * فريدريك نورونيا
A friend once told me that the villages of Loutolim (Lott'li) and Cortalim
(Kut'thal) were named after the twin sons of Lord Ram -- Lav and Kush.

Is there any truth in this, or does it just reflect the tendency of
Sanskrit promoters and votaries to see almost every name they encounter (or
a slanted version of it) as in some way connected with some Sanskrit name?

While surfing the Net today, I came across a claim that almost every other
country in the South Asian region (and beyond) had names infuenced by
Sanskrit:
http://gk.queryhome.com/8338/countries-names-origin-from-sanskrit-word

What do you think? FN
