[Goanet-News] Bimbli jam... via the Goan Food WIthout a Fuss (WhatsApp) group

2024-06-03 Thread Frederick Noronha
BIMBLI JAM

Equal weight of bimblis and sugar. Soak the bimbles overnight in water.
Throw in some salt (after pricking them). Next day throw out the water and
wash the bimblis well. Then crush them and put in a pan along with the
sugar. Cook till thick. Put the fire off when it becomes sufficiently
thick. Cool and bottle.

[Goanet-News] AVAILABLE: A new Romi Konkani-English dictionary (via mail order too)

2024-05-15 Thread Frederick Noronha
Now in the bookshops in Goa. Also available via mail order. Buy early and
avail of a pre-publication discount:

CONTEMPORARY KONKANI-ENGLISH DICTIONARY (Isidore Dantas)

Separate sections on Konkani homonyms (words with similar spelling or
pronunciation but different meanings and origins), and Konkani palindromes
(that the same backward Published in read November by as forwards). Select
Konkani sayings, illustrated by artist Bina Nayak. Uses contemporary
language with a focus on words currently in use. Covers all major dialects
of the language. Incorporates words from earlier pioneering dictionaries,
many of which are hard to access or out of print. Particularly useful for
translators, authors and scriptwriters.  A helpful language-learning tool;
a useful aid for Goan expatriates scattered across the globe. This book
could help build the Konkani Wikipedia and Konkani Wiktionary (both
online), as has the earlier lexicographical work of Isidore Dantas
(co-created with the late journalist Joel D’Souza). RS 600 (IN GOA)

Konkani in the Roman (Romi) script is currently not recognised for official
purposes. Yet, this form of the language continues to be vibrant and
widely used in daily life. Local initiatives have encouraged its use in
local writing, publishing books, magazines, newspapers sections, and
periodicals. This, amidst many challenges. In cyberspace, some Romi
Konkani initiatives (such as WhatsApp groups and a multi-script Wikipedia)
have been launched. But it's never enough; there is a long way to go. To
take the language (and script) forward, a pressing need has been felt for a
comprehensive, updated, and easy-to-access Konkani-English dictionary.
This was built through long years of work by the Pune-based author,
translator, lexicographer and long-time Konkani promoter Isidore Dantas.

This initiative drew crowd-funding support at an early stage. The
Contemporary Konkani English Dictionary has been worked out in an
easy-to-comprehend format and style. It can fill a deep vacuum in the
Konkani world. The last such dictionary was released way back in 1968.
This dictionary also contains the etymology (the origins) of Konkani words,
and also of words that Konkani has borrowed from other languages --
Sanskrit, Portuguese, Persian, Prakrit, Arabic, Urdu, Kannada, even Greek,
Latin, Dutch, French, Hebrew, Tamil, and Tulu.

* 16800 HEADWORDS
* FOCUS ON WORDS CURRENTLY IN USE
* COVERS MAJOR DIALECTS DICTIONARY
* INCORPORATES WORDS EARLIER USED
* CROWD-FUNDED, WITH READER SUPPORT

*For mail-order (within India) send your address to either to FN

*In this episode, we sit down with Goa based Art Consultant, Curator &
Collector Samira Sheth.*

For as 2020 comes to a close, we can't help but reflect upon the many ways
in which this year has indeed affected the arts. As we enter what would
typically be a season packed with year end celebrations and an endless
array of art festivals & events, *we were curious to get Samira's take on

[Goanet-News] Motets... in the Goa of the 16th century and today (article by Deepti Coutinho)

2024-03-21 Thread Frederick Noronha
Santos Passos & Motets | Tradition of Christian Sacred Music for Lent
March 9, 2016 admin
Pic source: saligaoserenade.com

Lent is a very special time for every Christian faithful. The 40 days
represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation
of satan and preparing to begin his ministry. In the Konkani language,
Goans commonly use the term ‘korezm’, which is derived from the Portuguese
‘quaresma’, meaning forty – evidently signifying the forty days in
imitation of Christ’s sojourn in the desert. Christians are called to
prepare for this time through prayer, reflection, penance and charitable
works, during Lent.

Goa has a rich tradition of Christian Sacred Music, which helps us to pray
more meaningfully. In Goa during lent, all forms of entertainment would
come to a standstill. The only form of drama was the ‘Santos Passos’,
literally the ‘holy steps’, through which scenes from the passion of Jesus
were depicted using large statues. The Jesuit priest, Gaspar Barzeo, is
said to have introduced these theatrical-type representations in Goa, in
the XVI century. These pious tableaus portraying the Lord’s sufferings were
accompanied by the singing of peculiar Lenten songs, which took on a
special form, known as the ‘motet’. It is interesting to note that Fr.
Barzeo was a close collaborator (assistant) of St. Francis Xavier. Hence,
one cannot rule out the hand of our beloved Gõycho Saib in the ‘santos
passos’ and in the genesis of the Goan ‘motet’. The rendering of these
somber and awe-inspiring chants was inter spaced with reflections on
Christian life and morals in the light of the Scriptures, delivered by a
priest, who usually employed a rhetorical flair. A young member of the
community was trained by the village choir-master (mestre da igreja) to
sing the hymn of ‘Veronica’.

IMG-20160307-WA0003
A Young Girl (Ms. Ruchita Gomes) performing the hymn ‘Veronica’

It is important to note that the Goan motet is quite different in style,
rhythm and harmony from the motet found in other parts of the Catholic
world. Some musicologists have opined that the Goan motet, developed by
native composers, was the result of a fusion of Western and Eastern musical
elements. These motets are unique pieces of Goan Catholic sacred music, and
can be considered as a fine example of inculturation of Catholic sacred
music in Goa. Originally, they were sung by men alone, in a four voice
arrangement. It is to be recalled that till the middle of the XX century,
singing in the Church was the prerogative of men. The voice which sang the
uppermost notes was called Tiple, followed by the Alto voice (equally high,
but lower than the Tiple), then the Tenor and finally the Bass voice. While
males are known to sing the Alto, Tenor and Bass voices even today, it is
rather interesting to imagine how the Tiple was sung. Either the Tiple
singers had very high and fine voices (rather girlish in timbre) like the
“sopranist” voices still sung by some in Europe, or they were castrated
males, or they used the “falsetto”. The third option appears to be the most
plausible.

The instruments used to accompany these sacred chants were carefully
chosen: two violins, two clarinets and one rabecão (three stringed
double-bass).

Goan motets are indigenous musical compositions of quite high standard,
produced by native Goan mestris. The text was biblical and was usually a
very short phrase from the passion narrative. . This method can be said to
be similar to the Benedictine monastic method of meditation, or even quite
near to the Indian mantra-type prayer.

In the present day, only a few parishes in Goa still preserve the tradition
of motet singing, in the traditional style. It is a pity that we are
gradually losing something that is ours! The tradition of Motet is much
older than even Mando- Dulpodam. Hopefully , our present generation helps
awakening their parishes to put talents together and to produce edifying
and rich music for Lent, in their own parishes.

Jeanne Hromnik is based in South Africa. She should know.

The co-author (R Mesthrie) of a book she wrote wrote this paper about
Konkni-speakers in South Africa. But these may trace their origin to an
area outside of Goa (not the Fernandeses or Desouzas that Gilbert refers
too).

ABSTRACT

This article continues the initial documentary work on South African Kokni
begun in Mesthrie, Kulkarni-Joshi and Paradkar (2016). The language (known
as Konkani in India) has been in existence for over 125 years in South
Africa, with Cape Town as its main base. We characterise the extent to
which the language is still used and the social circumstances under which
this takes place. We highlight historical research on the strong
transnational mobility of older speakers in Cape Town and their keen
awareness of village roots in India. Our investigations on the Konkan coast
of India confirm the strong historical and linguistic links between the
area and Cape Town. We present our preliminary findings on the dialect
characteristics of the Cape Town variety, mainly in relation to
morphological variation, based on our fieldwork of 2016–2017. There is
initial support for the hypothesis that significant variation based on
villages of origin persists well over a hundred years after the initial
migrations. We conclude by addressing some dilemmas concerning language
maintenance and shift.

[Goanet] MOZAMBIQUE Aquino de Braganca (Selected Articles and Interviews, 1980–1986)

2024-03-06 Thread Frederick Noronha
The Goan supporter of the Black nationalist cause in Mozambique Aquino de
Bragança, had he been alive, would have marked the celebration of his birth
centenary on April 6, 2024. Colin Darch mentioned this and shared a link to
a recent book on Aquino. It can be downloaded (open access) here:

Independence and Revolution in Portuguese-Speaking Africa
Aquino de Braganca (Selected Articles and Interviews, 1980–1986)

Aquino de Bragança was a close advisor to Samora Machel, former president
of Mozambique. Both lost their lives when their plane crashed at Mbuzini in
October 1986.

Born in Goa, fluent in French as well as Portuguese, and trained as a
scientist, Aquino dedicated his life to the liberation struggles of
southern Africa. He was a militant journalist, an academic, a diplomat, and
a public intellectual. His skill in sensitive and discreet political
negotiation earned him the nickname ‘the submarine’ and he played a key
role in Frelimo’s early contacts with the Portuguese, leading eventually to
independence in 1975.

Illustrated with contemporary photographs, *Aquino de Braganca*: *Independence
and Revolution in Portuguese-speaking Africa* brings together a selection
of his post-independence writings and interviews, many published in English
for the first time. The editors – both specialists on Lusophone Africa –
provide a general introduction to Aquino’s life and thought, as well as
short contextual preambles to each of the twelve texts.

‘What a treasure! This collection provides a vast amount of information
about the character of the Mozambican Revolution and the debates that
surrounded it. Aquino’s words evoke the spirit of the times, the hopes,
fears, disappointments, joys and speculations of a generation of activist
scholars willing to devote all their energies, and give their lives if
necessary, to the emancipation of humankind.’–Albie Sachs

[Goanet-News] Konkani In The Roman Script: A Short Grammatical Study (Ricardo Cabral).... Emigration, Tourism, In-migration and Occupational Diversification in Betalbatim - Goa (Afonso M Botelho)

2024-02-20 Thread Frederick Noronha
Konkani is an excitingly complex language because it has gone through
different historical situations down the ages. Because they found it both
appealing and useful for their labours the foreign missionaries made
numerous attempts to bring Konkani to 'book' so to say. Being familiar with
the Roman script they applied it also to Konkani but faced a lot of
challenges. Some of the challenges persisted till date. So, there was
always a felt need to satisfactorily explain the syntax of the language. An
attempt therefore has been made to put into perspective some of the
grammatical relations found in the Konkani language. Some doable
suggestions have also been made in overcoming some of the existing
challenges and facilitating further the use of the Roman script for
inscribing Konkani.

Emigration, Tourism, In-migration and Occupational Diversification in
Betalbatim - Goa-
Author Name: Afonso M. Botelho | Format: Paperback | Genre : Reference &
Study Guides | Other Details
Amidst the soothing cadence of the crashing waves and the whispers of
coconut palms, this book showcases Betalbatim, as more than just a
picturesque seaside village in Goa, India. Delving deep into the
socio-economic fabric, it unravels the connections of emigration, tourism
and cultural influences that define the village’s identity. The chapters
unveils the layers of Betalbatim’s transition from its colonial past to its
bustling energy of contemporary times. At its core, the book is more than
an academic inquiry—it is a powerful testimony to the voices and
aspirations of Betalbatim's inhabitants. By amplifying their stories and
struggles, the book serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring vitality
of village life besieged by the currents of change. Whether you are a
scholar, a historian, or simply a curious explorer, this definitive study
offers unparalleled insights into the vibrant tapestry of Betalbatim's
past, present, and future.

[Goanet-News] Goan architectural heritage in a concise book

2024-02-20 Thread Frederick Noronha
13 Dec 2023 | 05:01am ISTGoan architectural heritage in a concise bookA
book focusing on the architecture as well as history of Goa, ‘Heritage at
the Crossroads: Preservation of Goa’s Architectural Treasures’, edited by
Joaquim Rodrigues dos Santos, will be released today, December 13, at
Fundacao Oriente. Almost five years in the making, the book features some
of the top Goan, Indian and Portuguese conservationists and those who
worked closely on preserving various monuments in Goa

Did you know that the Gate of the Palace of Adil Shah at Old Goa which is a
national monument is actually a folly ruin built by the Portuguese in 1906?
There are many interesting facets of Goa’s architecture which is buried in
the pages of books in the archives which hardly reaches a wider audience.
Joaquim Rodrigues dos Santos is an architect and PhD expert in heritage
preservation, researcher and professor at the University of Lisbon, who has
been undertaking investigation on the Indo-Portuguese architectural
heritage. He has been visiting Goa for almost two decades and almost every
year since he was studying his post doctorate.

He has edited the book, ‘Heritage at the Crossroads: Preservation of Goa’s
Architectural Treasures,’ which will be released today, December 13 at 6 pm
at Fundacao Oriente, Panjim. It brings together scholars, technicians,
heritage lovers and passionate conservationists. The book published by
Caleidoscopio in Portugal, is supported by the ARTIS – Institute of Art
History, School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon,
Consulate General of Portugal, Camões - Instituto da Cooperação e da
Língua, Lisbon, Fundacao Oriente and Casa De Goa (House of Goa) in Lisbon.
The book can be purchased online through the publisher’s website.

The 20 chapters of the 389 pages are filled with beautiful and crisp
photographs of monuments, maps, plans as well as rare paintings. Each
chapter is well researched and the authors have given utmost attention to
every aspect of the topic. The idea for the book was inspired by the many
conferences that Joaquim organised at Fundacao Oriente in Panjim. “When I
came to Goa in 2015 for my post doctorate which was about ‘The Preservation
of Heritage in Portuguese Influences in Goa, Daman and Diu during the
Portuguese Period’, I came across experts here. The following year, I used
to invite them to conferences in front of an audience with several
lectures. So after three or four conferences, I realized that there were
just a few scattered text here and there. And it would be good to have new
and revised text in a single book. I invited the authors to write something
for the book. The last chapter is from probably one of the best Portuguese
art historians, Vitor Serrao, about painting, because it's not only
architecture that is the most important thing,” says Joaquim, who arrived
in Goa with just five copies of thebook.

Theauthors are from Goa, India and Portugal writing about Goa. “My idea
since the beginning was to make a book about Goa for the Goans. Goan
heritage is somehow being distorted or vanishing or, and this is something
which is very painful for me. I wanted to have this book published here. I
was not able to get the publisher. Interestingly, Caleidoscopio, which is
the best Portuguese publisher in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences,
immediately asked to publish this book, when they heard of it,” adds
Joaquim.

The first chapter of the book is by Percival Noronha, a strong defender of
history and heritage of Goa. “This book is in memory of Percival Noronha
and Paulo Varela Gomes, because he used to say that we don’t have
Indo-Portuguese arts, it is Goan art, and it is unique. It should be
studied and preserved. Percival’s chapter was published by Fundacao Oriente
and his family allowed us to include it because it is a good introduction
to the context of the Goan architecture within India. An article I wrote
was also published in Portuguese in Portugal. I think it would be useful to
have in English here,” explains Joaquim.

Nizamuddin Taher was the former director of World Heritage Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI) and he mentioned the works of ASI since 1961 until he
was in Goa. Divay Gupta was the leader of INTACH and he talks about the
‘Role of INTACH in conserving Goa’s built heritage’. Ashish Rege wrote
about the houses in Margao, and about the architecture of Goa. “This
chapter is also very interesting, because it's not only talks about
architecture of Goa, but also how to make the traditional plasters, the
lime plasters, how to apply etc. This chapterwas published in Portuguese in
Portugal. I think it's interesting to bring it here in English.”

Alice Santiago Faria writes about the ‘The importance of preserving the
everyday public architecture in Goa’. He elaboarates, “She wrote a small
chapter about the everyday public architecture. Although a public building,
these are not

[Goanet-News] High Court just declared an ODP illegal? Unpacking the Calangute ODP fiasco and judgement (Tahir Noronha)

2024-02-17 Thread Frederick Noronha
If you live in Goa, are interested in the state, or considering investing
in housing here, watch this video! A recent court order has shaken the
foundations of planning and development in the state. In a landmark order,
the Bombay High Court has stayed several plans, and rebuked politicians for
interfering and arbitrarily converting natural, coastal and slopy land for
development. This will have lasting effects! This is an opinion piece,
intended to be fair use. I have over-simplified many elements of the case
so that more people can engage with the core issues, as well as whom I
think is to blame. I advise my viewers to watch the excellent video by
Swapnesh Sherlekar @SushagatGoykar and read the judgement to arrive at your
own conclusions.

A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY ON CHILD REARING PRACTICES in Rural
Goa Jagadish Cacodcar, Anagha Dubhashi, Shilpa Joglekar
Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University

Aim: To assess the traditional child rearing
practices among rural Goan mothers and the various
socio-demographic factors influencing these
practices.

Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was
conducted among 307 rural mothers with children < 2
years in two rural areas under rural health and
training centre Mandur located 16 kilometres from
Panaji Goa, through house to house visits and oral
interviews. Analysis of collected data was done
using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version. Chi-square
test was applied in addition to proportions and
percentages.

Results: Rooming in was practiced by majority (86%)
of the mothers within 24 hours of birth. 46.25% of
the mothers fed colostrum to their newborns while
73.62 % of the mothers breastfed within 24 hours.
37.59% of the mothers practiced exclusive
breastfeeding (EBF) for the first six months. The
mean duration of breastfeeding was 11.015 th months.
90% of the women was educated 12 standard and above
breastfed their babies up to 12 months. Bottle
feeding was common (75%). Cereal based diet was the
commonest complementary feeding administered by 23%
of the mothers.

Commonest traditional practices followed included oil
massage (97.72%) and use of amulets/talisman (97.72%)
in the study population.

Conclusion: Beneficial infant feeding practices such
as early initiation of breastfeeding and feeding of
colustrum among rural Goan mothers was low despite
accessible antenatal care and health care services.
However, though some of the traditional children
rearing practices followed such as oil massage,
delivery at parents' home were as per the recommended
norms, some of the beliefs/practices such as kajal
application, bathing the newborn immediately after
birth, need to be replaced by sound and scientific
methods.

BRIDGING THE CENTURIES: A Brief Biography of Wamanrao Varde
Valaulikar Jason Keith Fernandes https://doi.org/10.4000/rccs.7048
The extant representations of the late nineteenth-century
personality Wamanrao Varde Valaulikar (1877-1946), known as
Shenoi Goembab to Konkani activists, are marked by a
hagiographical character. The present article offers a
biography of the man which eschews these nationalist
hagiographies to place the man in the context of his times
and to demonstrate his primary role as an activist in the
creation of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin caste. In so doing,
the article demonstrates how the foundations for the
contemporary Goan public sphere were laid in the nineteenth

This study examines the multiplicity of styles and
heterogeneity of the arts created on the southern coasts of
India during the period of colonial rule. Diverging from the
trajectory of numerous studies that underline biased and
distorted conceptions of India promoted in European and
Indian literary sources, I examine ways in which Indian
cultural traditions and religious beliefs found substantial
expression in visual arts that were ostensibly geared to
reinforce Christian worship and colonial ideology. This
investigation is divided into two parts. Following a brief
overview, my initial focus will be on Indo-Portuguese
polychrome woodcarvings executed by local artisans for
churches in the areas of Goa and Kerala on the Malabar coast.
I will then relate to Portuguese religious strategies
reflected in south Indian churches, involving the destruction
of Hindu temples and images and their replacement with
Catholic equivalents, inadvertently contributing to the
survival of indigenous beliefs and recuperation of the Hindu
monuments they replaced. https://doi.org/10.3390/rel12090684

This is the second edition of the Goa Book Fair, the last one
was held in February 2023. The fair will be open to all from
10 am to 8 pm daily.

According to the organisers, there will be a wide selection
of books displayed by publishers and booksellers from diverse
parts of the country. This will include books both for
general readers and also for children. This time, there is a
wider range of languages represented too.

Attendees can look forward to engaging sessions,
book readings, discussions, and workshops. "The
book fair, the only of its kind in Goa, encourages
participation from schools, so as to inculcate and
nourish a love for books and reading among the
younger ones," said Leonard Fernandes, co-founder
of the Margao-based The Dogears Bookshop, which is
  organising the Goa Book Fair.

Fernandes, and Queenie Rodrigues, husband and wife duo, have
also been behind the successful Publishing Next conference,
which is annually held in Goa. In 9 editions starting in
2011, the conference has brought together publishers and
publishing professionals from across the country in Goa to
discuss issues related to diverse aspects of the book trade.

Fair was organised in February 2023. There were 23
participating stalls. Attendees were able to browse through
books across genres such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry,
self-help, and also a wide variety of books in Konkani and
those related to Goa.

"The Goa Book Fair serves as a platform for publishers from
across the country to showcase their books to a discerning
readership in the State. With the range in genres and
languages that we expect to have this year, we believe that
visitors to the book fair are in for a wonderful experience,"
Rodrigues said.

"This year we have an exciting programme schedule that will
appeal to adults and children alike. We hope that more
children will visit this year, and take advantage of the wide
variety of books on display," she said.

books across genres such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry,
self-help, and also a wide variety of books in Konkani and
those related to Goa.

[Goanet-News] Kudds' federation to hold meeting in Goa

2023-12-12 Thread Frederick Noronha
FEDERATION OF ALL GOAN CLUBS (Kudd), Mumbai
108/109, Fram Mahal, 544 Kalbadevi Road, Dhobitalao, Mumbai 400 002. Phone:
9819995828

FEDERATION OF ALL GOAN CLUBS (Kudd), Mumbai organizes an open meeting
on Clubs (Kudd) affairs on 17 th December 2023 at 10.00 am. at the Rosary
School Hall, Opp. the Rosary Church, Navelim, Goa. Mr. Elias Vaz,
President, All India Catholic Union and Rev. Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, Parish
Priest, Rosary Church, Navelim will grace the gathering as the chief guest
and guest of honour, respectively.

The meeting will be preceded by a Thanksgiving Holy Eucharist at Our Lady
of Rosary Church, Navelim, at 8.30 am. Club
members, irrespective of whether their Clubs are members of the Federation
or not, as well as Members of all Goan Catholic Associations are most
welcome to join in.

After the last meeting of the Club Federation in Goa, many clubs got the
Registration done on a large scale except a few clubs who are yet to be
registered with Charity Commissioner, Mumbai under Trust Act and Society’s
Registration Act 1960.

We had to call this meeting again due to various other problems.

We intend to accept views, suggestions and guidance so that we are able to
solve the problems through your help and compliance. A few clubs are left
and its our responsibility to save them for posterity. Today there are very
few members in the clubs. The fees charged are not enough to meet the
various expenditures like rent, electricity bills, maintenance, etc.

Funds are also required for writing of accounts, file Returns with Charity
Commissioner and Income Tax Authorities, to pay for getting Pan Card, etc.
Pan card is required to get electricity Bill transferred in Club’s name.
This is required to show proof to Court that the premises belong to the
Registered club and not to the individuals in whose names the Rent receipt
is issued then since the clubs were not Registered. The members on whose
names the Rent Receipt was issued were the Managers of the club then and
their heirs have no right of inheritance of the rented properties.

The expenses are also required to get the Lawyer to obtain affidavit from
the heirs of the deceased members in whose names the Rent Receipts are
issued by Landlord, to declare that they have no personal interest as their
Fathers/Grandfathers were the Managers of the clubs holding the rent
receipts on behalf of the clubs.

This is necessary as some legal heirs have sold some clubs and a few of
them are in court with Landlords claiming their right. This property is a
gift by ancestors for the benefit of the members in their respective
villages. The value of rented properties are sky rocketing in crores.
Landlords are going to court to vacate the clubs.

The clubs in Mumbai are an asset and an identity of the Goans. Some people
cannot afford to come to Mumbai because accomodation is too costly. Even if
they have relations or friends, they cannot accommodate them due to
shortage of space.

Club Members must not give up on clubs in Mumbai just because they are now
in a position to live without clubs. We have to come forward and help the
clubs to raise funds to renovate the premises, provide bedding, proper
electricity, put up partitions and make rooms for families. If proper set
up is done, clubs will get many visitors who will pay on daily basis.

Herds of Catholics all over India will come to Goa next November to January
for the Exposition of the relics of St. Francis Xavier. This is an
excellent opportunity for us to make accommodation available at affordable
cost in clubs in Mumbai, so that they can book their tickets to visit
Mumbai and Goa.

The President and the members of the Managing Committee of the Federation
are committed to help the members to the best of their ability.

[Goanet-News] Database of individuals sentenced by the Inquisition of Goa from 1650-1806

2023-12-01 Thread Frederick Noronha
A database of individuals sentenced by the Inquisition of Goa from
1650-1806, compiled by Alan Machado (lead researcher), Bruno Feitler, and
Carlos Rocha, has been uploaded into the repository of Universidade Federal
de São Paulo. The repository also preserves a database of defendants from
1561-1623 compiled in 2012 from the Reportorio prepared by the prosecutor
at that time, João Delgado Figueira.
The 1650-1806 database has been compiled from the lists of autos-da-fé
(acts of faith) that had been periodically sent to Lisbon from Goa, and
escaped destruction when most of the Inquisition’s archive was destroyed
after its final abolition in 1812. It is important to note that this
database is not exhaustive as there may still be uncatalogued documentation
in the Archivo Nacional de Torre do Tombo and the Biblioteca Nacional de
Portugal in Lisbon.
An auto-da-fe was mainly a ceremony for the reintegration of penitents into
the Church. It was composed of a sermon, the public reading of sentences
and the lifting of excommunication for those whose confessions were deemed
satisfactory. Those with unsatisfactory confessions or who remained
recalcitrant were handed over to secular justice for execution. Those
sentenced to other physical penalties, such as lashes or banishment,
were also delivered to secular justice.
In the database, details of the defendants are given in columns in an excel
sheet, with a code assigned to each one. These details include their names,
sex, age, caste, ethnicity, occupation, places of birth and residence,
offences they were charged with, and the spiritual, physical, and/or
pecuniary penalties imposed. Further details, where available, are given in
the
column titled “observations”.
Reference details are provided in two columns, one giving the physical
location of the document, and the other the location of the digitized
version, where available. A link is provided for each available digitized
version so that anyone interested can access the original document located
in the ANTT or BNP.
In total, this database contains records of 8,250 defendants, the
vast majority being men: 6,257 (more than 75%). Of the total number, 1,923
(just over 23%) were non-Christians: 1,708 "Gentiles", 56 "Moors", and 159
defendants who were labelled as Christians but converted during the
inquisitorial proceedings. The overwhelming number of offences among both
Christians and non-Christians related to gentilidade or Indian religious
practices. Of the total number sentenced, the number executed was 95
(1.15%), and the bones/ effigies of another 111 were burnt.
No non-Christian was executed.
This database is a valuable addition to the growing body of information on
the activities of Goa’s Inquisition, and is certain to shed more light on
it, and its impact on local populations.
