president Asif Ali Zardari told Palin she's gorgeous.

*NEW YORK (CNN) –* Sarah Palin and the foreign leaders she has met with in
New York have said very little to reporters over the last two days, but the
press happened to be in the room on Wednesday for one eyebrow-raising
exchange, as the new president of Pakistan lavished praise on Palin's looks.

On entering a room filled with several Pakistani officials this afternoon,
Palin was immediately greeted by Sherry Rehman, the country's Information
Minister.

And how does one keep looking that good when one is that busy?, Rehman
asked, drawing friendly laughter from the room when she complimented Palin.

Oh, thank you, Palin said.

Pakistan's recently-elected president, Asif Ali Zardari, entered the room
seconds later. Palin rose to shake his hand, saying she was honored to
meet him.

Zardari then called her gorgeous and said: Now I know why the whole of
America is crazy about you.

You are so nice, Palin said, smiling. Thank you.

A handler from Zardari's entourage then told the two politicians to keep
shaking hands for the cameras.

If he's insisting, I might hug, Zardari said. Palin smiled politely.

The Alaska governor did not answer questions from reporters at her first two
appearances on Wednesday, when she joined McCain in meetings with Georgian
president Mikheil Saakashvili and Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko, and
then traveled downtown to meet with Iraqi president Jalal Talabani.

But she did offer brief remarks to a reporter at the Zardari meeting who
asked about her day.

It's going great, Palin said. These meetings are very informative and
helpful, and a lot of good people sharing appreciation for America.

I think the issue of Caste-lessness of judiciary was well noted. As Bobby
has indicated the capital punishment is a grievous issue. There has been a
considerable debate on this. Still, the prevailing discourse added with
middle class sentiment tends to favour the capital punishment. Even the
otherwise progressive (Liberal) Left had favoured capital punishment echoing
the middle class sentiment as evident in a recent case.

MUMBAI: In a historic verdict on Wednesday, the ad hoc sessions court in
Bhandara handed down the death sentence to six persons in the Khairlanji
massacre case. Two others held guilty were given life imprisonment.

On September 15, sessions judge S.S. Das convicted eight of the 11 accused
of murder, rioting with deadly weapons, unlawful assembly and suppression of
evidence, while acquitting the other three of all charges.

The court found no evidence under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled
Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Section 354 of the Indian Penal
Code, which refers to assault or criminal force with intent to outrage the
 modesty of a woman.

While Gopal Binjewar and Shishupal Dhande were given life imprisonment,
Sakru Binjewar, Shatrughna Dhande, Vishwanath Dhande, Ramu Dhande, Jagdish
Mandlekar and Prabhakar Mandlekar were sentenced to death.

Welcoming the verdict, Ramdas Athavale, Republican Party of India

given the death sentence in a case of murder of people belonging to the
 Scheduled Castes.

China takes lead in Linux education

Since the Chinese government began supporting domestic open source
communities in 2005, hundreds of thousands of young people in the
world's most populous country have become a part of the open source
world.

With the help of the government-supported Leadership of Open Source
University Promotion Alliance (LUPA), Zhejiang Technology Institute of
Economy (ZJTIE) founded its Linux Training and Examination Centre in
2006.

The centre started out offering a simple 48-hour course; upon
completion, students received a Linux operator certificate or a Linux
network administrator certificate or both. According to ZJTIE, 1,500
students in the last two years have passed the examination. However,
those students who wanted to learn more had to learn by themselves.

Now, however, LUPA offers nine Linux certificates, including
certificates for software engineers, 'C' programming language
engineers, and LAMP system engineers. In response to a requirement
from China's Ministry of Education, LUPA published 11 new Linux
textbooks in July. The ministry hopes that these textbooks will help
Chinese students learn more advanced Linux technologies.

Some Chinese schools believe that Linux education has helped students
gain employment. According to ZJTIE, 90 per cent of the students in
its Economic Information Department received the LUPA certificates in
2006; as a result, employment rose to the highest the school has seen.
This may be a result of the booming open source market in China.
According to CCID Consulting, the sale of Chinese open source software
increased 17.1 per cent, while sales of Linux increased 20.2 per cent
in 2007.

As Linux accounts for 66.5 per cent of China's open source market
(according to a 2007 survey from CCID Consulting), open source
education has been focused mostly on Linux. However, its success has
encouraged ZJTIE to expand its teaching and certification. In March
2008, ZJTIE worked with LUPA to expand its education system from Linux
to the whole open source industry.

According to LUPA, more than 300 Chinese universities and colleges
have joined its system. Open source technology has become a required
course in many of these schools. Although the total number of students
who have been trained for open source technologies is not available
yet, Zhang Jianhua, chairman of LUPA, estimates that LUPA will train
100,000 students in Linux per year.

Besides developing open source courses, government-supported
communities also regularly hold activities such as open source
conferences, speeches, contests, festivals, and campus marches to
attract students to learn more about the culture, history, ideas, and
technologies of the open source industry. At the same time, open
source communities without government support have brought many young
Chinese to the open source world by offering free open source
information, translation of open source articles from other countries,
and forums for open source technologies communication.

Thanks in part to promotion by these communities, open source has
become a powerful idea among Chinese programmers. In a survey by
PHPChina in June 2007, 32.6 per cent of PHP professionals said that
they chose PHP mostly because it's open source, and 64.8 per cent of
interviewees who would start to learn PHP believed that open source
is the strong point of PHP. The same survey also showed that more
than three quarters of Chinese PHP professionals learned something
from or received information through domestic PHP communities.

The rapid growth of China's open source expertise has yet to result in
a significant contribution to the development of the global open
source industry. This may be because young Chinese people are still
novices in the open source industry, or it may be due to the fact that
they have to work more than 60 hours a week to fight for their new
jobs and have no time to work on open source projects for the time
being. However, as the open source education system improves and as
more young people become open source veterans, the global open source
community will benefit from China's presence.

The society of the query and the Googlization of our lives

A tribute to Joseph Weizenbaum

There is only one way to turn signals into information, through
interpretation, wrote the computer critic Joseph Weizenbaum. As Google's
hegemony over online content increases, argues Geert Lovink, we should stop
searching and start questioning.

A spectre haunts the world's intellectual elites: information overload.
Ordinary people have hijacked strategic resources and are clogging up once
carefully policed media channels. Before the Internet, the mandarin classes
rested on the idea that they could separate idle talk from knowledge.
With the rise of Internet search engines it is no longer possible to
distinguish between patrician insights and plebeian gossip. The distinction
between high and low, and their co-mingling on occasions of carnival, belong
to a bygone era and should no longer concern us. *Nowadays an altogether new
phenomenon is causing alarm: search engines rank according to popularity,
not truth.* Search is the way we now live. With the dramatic increase of
accessed information, we have become hooked on retrieval tools. We look for
telephone numbers, addresses, opening times, a person's name, flight
details, best deals and in a frantic mood declare the ever growing pile of
grey matter data trash. Soon we will search and only get lost. *Old
hierarchies of communication have not only imploded, communication itself
has assumed the status of cerebral assault. Not only has popular noise risen
to unbearable levels, we can no longer stand yet another request from
colleagues and even a benign greeting from friends and family has acquired
the status of a chore with the expectation of reply*. The educated class
deplores that fact that chatter has entered the hitherto protected domain of
science and philosophy, when instead they should be worrying about who is
going to control the increasingly centralized computing grid.

What today's administrators of noble simplicity and quiet grandeur cannot
express, we should say for them: there is a growing discontent with Google
and the way the Internet organizes information retrieval. *The scientific
establishment has lost control over one of its key research projects – the
design and ownership of computer networks, now used by billions of people.
How did so many people end up being that dependent on a single search
engine? Why are we repeating the Microsoft saga once again? It seems boring
to complain about a monopoly in the making when average Internet users have
such a multitude of tools at their disposal to distribute power. *One
possible way to overcome this predicament would be to positively redefine
Heidegger's *Gerede*. Instead of a culture of complaint that dreams of an
undisturbed offline life and radical measures to filter out the noise, it is
time to openly confront the trivial forms of *Dasein* today found in blogs,
text messages and computer games. Intellectuals should not longer portray
Internet users as secondary amateurs, cut off from a primary and primordial
relationship with the world. *There is a greater issue at stake and it
requires venturing into the politics of informatic life*. It is time to
address the emergence of a new type of corporation that is rapidly
transcending the Internet: Google.

The World Wide Web, which should have realized the infinite library Borges
described in his short story *The Library of Babel* (1941), is seen by many
of its critics as nothing but a variation of Orwell's *Big Brother* (1948).
The ruler, in this case, has turned from an evil monster into a collection
of cool youngsters whose corporate responsibility slogan is Don't be evil.
Guided by a much older and experienced generation of IT gurus (Eric
Schmidt), Internet pioneers (Vint Cerf) and economists (Hal Varian), *Google
has expanded so fast, and in such a wide variety of fields, that there is
virtually no critic, academic or business journalist who has been able to
keep up with the scope and speed with which Google developed in recent
years. New applications and services pile up like unwanted Christmas
presents. Just add Google's free email service Gmail, the video sharing
platform YouTube, the social networking site Orkut, GoogleMaps and
GoogleEarth, its main revenue service AdWords with the Pay-Per-Click
advertisements, office applications such as Calendar, Talks and Docs. Google
not only competes with Microsoft and Yahoo, but also with entertainment
firms, public libraries (through its massive book scanning program) and even
telecom firms. Believe it or not, the Google Phone is coming soon.* I
recently heard a less geeky family member saying that she had heard that
Google was much better and easier to use than the Internet. It sounded cute,
but she was right. Not only has Google become the better Internet, it is
taking over software tasks from your own computer so that you can access
these data from any terminal or handheld device. Apple's MacBook Air is a

Dear friends,

The daily paper Mail Today, published in Delhi, has been doing an
extraordinary set of stories on the investigations into the various
blasts conducted by the Indian Mujahideen. While the rest of the
media has barely begun to use words like 'allegedly', 'police claim',
Mail Today has been investigating the investigations. They

MULTIPLYING MASTERMINDS

Mumbai Police claim they have nabbed the real Indian Mujahideen boss
responsible for all bombings since 2005, including Delhi Ahmedabad
Karnataka rubbishes Delhi Police claims

By Krishna Kumar in Mumbai
Mail Today, Delhi, 25 September 2008
mailtoday.in

Days after the Delhi Police named Mohammad Atif Ameen as the Indian
Mujahideen (IM) chief, the Mumbai Police claimed to have identified
the real Indian Mujahideen mastermind responsible for terrorist
strikes across India since 2005. In a hurriedly-convened press
conference on Wednesday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hassan Gafoor
announced the arrest of five IM members and said they were involved in
the recent bomb blasts across the country and had plans to attack
Mumbai. He named Mohammad Sadiq Shaikh as the man from whom Atif, the
alleged leader of the Delhi bombers, reportedly took his orders.

In the process, the Mumbai Police introduced new characters and
debunked old theories of the police forces of Uttar Pradesh (UP),
Jaipur, Gujarat and Delhi, each of whom had earlier claimed credit for
arresting the 'real' terror mastermind behind bomb attacks in their
states and elsewhere. Walliullah was supposed to have triggered the
Uttar Pradesh blasts in 2006, Shahbaz Hussain was believed to be
behind the Jaipur blasts in May, and Abu Bashar and Tauqeer had
allegedly masterminded the Gujarat blasts in July. Those theories
seemed to hold till the Delhi Police changed the script. They said
that Atif plotted UP, Jaipur, Gujarat and the Delhi blasts. Now, the
Mumbai Police has introduced Sadiq Shaikh as yet another mastermind
and said he controlled Atif. Gafoor said that the five arrested men
had planned the Ahmedabad and Delhi blasts and were behind every blast
in the country since 2005. It was not Atif Ameen who was the
mastermind. He was just the operations guy. It was actually Sadiq who
used to control Atif and made him do the terror attacks, said Gafoor.

This contradicts the Delhi Police claim, made after the police action
in Delhi's Jamia Nagar on September 19, that Atif had masterminded the
series of terror attacks across the country since 2006. If this is
confusing, read on. According to the Mumbai Police, even Sadiq is not
the 'real' master mind. Amir Razza, who is residing in Pakistan, is
the one who is controlling Sadiq, claimed Mumbai's joint police
commissioner (crime) Rakesh Maria. Since Razza is in Pakistan, it is
not known who 'controls' him. Like the police from other states, the
Mumbai Police insisted that the ones they had caught were the ones
that had orchestrated the strikes in other states. The five have been
identified as Afzal Mutalib Usmani (32), Mohammed Sadiq Shaikh,
Mohammed Arif Shaikh (38), Mohammed Zakir Shaikh (28) and Mohammed
Ansar Sheikh (31). The Lashkar-e-Tayyeba and the
Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami had also allegedly trained them, Gafoor
claimed.

Fifteen detonators, eight kg of ball bearings, four fully-active
electronic circuits which are used in bombs, one submachine carbine,
two .38 revolvers, 30 cartridges of 9 mm carbine and eight cartridges
of .38 revolver were reportedly found from them. Maria said, The five
(IM) members have assisted or been actively involved in the unexploded
bombs in Varanasi, the Shramjeevi Express attack, the Sankatmochan
Temple blast, the blasts in a waiting room in Varanasi railway
station, the 7/11 blasts in Mumbai local trains and all other blasts
in the country that have occurred from 2005.

This runs counter to what the Uttar Pradesh police have claimed
earlier. According to them, Walliullah was the mastermind of the
Sankatmochan Temple blast in 2006. The perplexing series of claims on
terror masterminds has resulted in a somersault of sorts in the Mumbai
Police's own claims made earlier. On Wednesday, it said the five men
whose arrests it announced had also engineered the 7/11 blasts by
training and helping seven people — who are now in jail — to plant
bombs. But, the state police's anti terrorist squad (ATS) has already
arrested more than seven people for planning 7/11 blasts and said in
its charge sheet that the men were given training by Pakistani
nationals. So how could the five men, who are residents of India,
become Pakistani nationals in the ATS charge sheet? When this was

The castedness of the Indian judiciary and legal system is actually fairly
well written about, so the lack of implementation of the SC/ST Act is hardly
surprising. Well, in its 58 year history since independence, our SC has just
3 dalit judges and one dalit CJ. If thats testimony enough. The same is the
question of gender. Since Fatima beevi became the first woman judge of the
SC, there is an unwritten practice, where another woman would be appointed
only after the term of the incumbernt woman is over.
Well, in that context, the worry is about capital punishment. This worry is
also pertinent in terms of the fact that most people vulnerable to the
policing system are Dalits and Muslims.
My point was that while conviction in the Khairlanji massacre needs to be
welcomed, the sentencing needs to be condemned

the prosecution case about the gravity of the offence, I believe that it

This becomes an even more pertinent issue given the kind of prejudices
that the Indian legal system operates within, victims of this most often
would be people from marginalised backgrounds. To quote from an Amnesty
 study;

*As the study relied on reported judgments, it was bound by certain
limitations. For example, the socio-economic background of defendants does
not normally emerge from the rulings, as it is judicial practice in India to
avoid references to caste, community, religion and other socio-economic
factors relevant to the victim or the accused, unless seen to be of direct
relevance to the adjudication of the case. It is therefore almost impossible
to analyse the impact of the application of the death penalty on members of
particular religious or caste groups through a study of the judgments. There
is an urgent need for more detailed studies, including detailed analyses of
individual cases. Other countries have been shown to be using the death
penalty in a highly prejudicial manner against individuals based on their
ethnic origins or similar factors. For example, in the United States of
America the death penalty has been shown to be disproportionately used
 against African Americans.

(Athavale), said it was the first time in the country that six persons were
given the death sentence in a case of murder of people belonging to the
 Scheduled Castes.
 Speedy trial

Activist and journalist Milind Fulzale from Yavatmal told *The Hindu *that
in the cases of the Gavai brothers, who had their eyes gouged out in the
1970s; in the case of the Thombre brothers, who were killed at Kalamb in
Yavatmal in 1997 during Holi; or in the case of Pochiram Kamble, an activist
burnt alive during the struggle to rename the Marathwada University, nothing
happened. Though cases were filed, either the matter was suppressed or some
light sentence handed down. This was

[GreenYouth] Fwd: Please help .....mark corruption issues in calicut university.

2008-09-25 Thread gk31.vinod gk31.vinod
Hi All,

I had earlier given the details of mark corruption issues of s/c students
in calicut university, kerala.
Even after repeated requests from students and S/C leaders, university
authorities are not allowing an inquiry in this.
They say that FORMAL COMPLAINT is necessary for checking mark corruptions.

Two *big idiots* - s/c-s/t representatives in Senate(Prof.T.M.Sudharsanan ,
Trichur Govt. Engg college) , syndicate (Vinod Madampurath, calicut) are
keeping silent on this issue saying no solid proof. Please note that the
actual proof -original mark registers- could be easiy verified by a phone
call. The question is, are they representing Carl Marx in senate or socially
backward scheduled categories?

Since CPI[M]/DYFI people are behind this, no students are coming forward to
give a formal complaint, which has got other consequences also. This issue
was reported to many S/C political leads, they are also not interfering.
Many people says it looks like some horror story hence unbelievable. Most
people *WANT* to *unbelieve* this as CPI[M] is against.

So, now we are in a helpless state [ really tired] even after 3 years. A
big amount was spent in journeys and phone calls to many idiotic S/C leads
in CPI[M]. Many leaders rejected us, as they donot know us personally.
Because of this social backwardness only Ambedkar was particular to reserve
S/C-S/T representatives in authorities. But if they also stand aside enemies
what we can do?

Only one leader in CPI[M] came to enquire on this and he died after 3
months[] .[name details available on demand]

*Do any one of you know how to bring these issues to attention of somebody
having social power, who is interested to inquire on this?*
If somebody comes with genuine interest we can bring the affected students
to them, but in secret.
We have limited contacts.
[ for details of issue please visit http://scststudents.blogspot.com]
Please post your valuable comments on this.

One more question is that, CPI[M] leaders 'almost' cheated high court of
kerala on a case filed on this. Then, is it legal to inform high court on
that, so that an enquiry will be initiated by them?

Other option is of human rights commission. does this come under human
rights?

Even CBI, did not accept this as complaint is anonymous.

DYFI/SFI leads have already threatened many students not to give formal
complaint.
Some CPM leads want to publicize the reported issues as political attacks.

If these are politics based corruptions, why only NAIR's [Arun.K.Nair,
Binoj.S.Nair] are sent for threatening students? Aren't anybody from S/C-S/T
in SFI or DYFI?
Whoever comes to oppose us in this, belongs to forward castes - university
staff from enquiry section to examination controllers office, local
politicians in calicut university, politicians at cochin[ Mr. Ashokan Mamman
Cheriyan, a known lawyer of high court and also secretary of Cochin
university - CPI[M] fraction], at the same time see to that SFI / DYFI
chiefs are belonging to scheduled caste in calicut university [names
available on demand]. We put only that demand finally, please convince one
of these S/C leads on this issue by let them verify marks.

Regards,
GK Vinod.

Dear Bobby,

I agree. I was only pointing out that well-written aspect, but not well
accepted by our conscience.
as far as capital punishment is concerened i have the same opinion
my friends in the legal system inform me that majority of the convctd people
are innocent
i dont understand how we can go with such a system
my sister is in SC now. She tells me that how cleverly a judge can
manipulate judgements
caste, religion, gender, class ... these are the categories not only for
academic discourses
we encounter it in each and every step in life
secular classless, casteless rhetoric helps those who sits and give
judgments whehter it be in courts, police stations, media houses, online
forums etc.
