Re: [h-cost] 1968 Trade Journals and Terms

2010-01-19 Thread Penny Ladnier
Thank you to everyone for your help with the terms and suggestion of other
journals. Does anyone recall hearing the term D-B used for double-breasted
jackets. I am just wondering if this was abbreviations as an industry term.
I was a salesperson in menswear 10 years later and we never referred to
double-breasted jackets as D-B. I asked my mother who is pretty
knowledgeable in fashion and never heard the term B-D.

I recall a tennis neckline...V-shaped sweater but not a tennis collar. Oh!
The good old days...I played tennis on our college team.

Another questionable term from 1968...
Lets go the opposite direction!!! What is a B-D man's knit shirt?

[h-cost] Bridal fashions

2010-01-19 Thread Penny Ladnier
Recently I went at a bridal show and was really surprised by how many new
wedding gowns that look like Victorian bridal dresses. Some were like the
narrow skirt and some were full blown bustles with the horse's rump. We
photographed the fashion show.

I went to several vendors to pick up catalogs. I laughed so much!!! Every
vendor asked me, What is your date? This threw me the first time. No one
has asked me in 22 years when I was pregnant with my last son. I just finally
came up with a pat answer, 31 years ago!

One booth was for a local bridal association. They are mediator for complaints
between the bride and anyone that is associated with the bridal industry. They
refer to themselves as the BBB for local bridal businesses. I asked what were
the major problems for the businesses. They said that potential customers come
into the bridal shops and try one a lot of dresses. The customer would write
down the dress number and manufacturer. Then they will go online and find it
cheaper and order it. The organization suggests to retailers to anyone who
comes in the door to check their cell phone and cameras at the counter before
showing them a dress. When the customer is leaving, the retailer returns the
items.

I working on a wedding fashion history website. Does anyone know of past or
present bridal trade associations? Also, I am curious as to where are the
current bridal buyers' marketplace. I know where the womenwear, menswear,
childrenswear, and Halloween costume markets are.

[h-cost] Re: Mangle

2010-01-19 Thread Kate Bunting
I remember seeing a box mangle at Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire. It
consisted of a wooden frame filled with large stones, which could be moved up
and down the table on wooden rollers. I expect the very heavy weight pressed
things without the need for heat. I agree with Sharon that the writer was
mistaken in suggesting that garments would be mangled after ironing.

My mum had a washing machine with an electric wringer in the late 1950s - in
fact, she never owned a twin-tub, but went straight to a front-loading
automatic when they moved to a bungalow in 1969. She even kept the old machine
in a utility room for some years just for the wringer, which was useful if you
had hand-washed a few small items that it wasn't worth putting on the spin
cycle for. (They got their first fridge then too - the old house was Victorian
and had a place cool enough to keep milk etc. fresh.)

Anybody here remember the Coke bottle with the sprinkler spout, for

I think our laundry sprinkler came from Tupperware.

My mom used to always tell a story about her friend who went to Catholic
school - she was the only girl in a large family and was responsible for all
the ironing. She would dampen all the boy's shirts, then keep them in the
freezer. She would always leave the ironing till the last minute, so she
only dampened the collar, front facing and cuffs and those were the only
parts she would iron. The brothers would get mad because they couldn't take
their jackets or sweaters off.

My aunt still irons all the sheets and bedding, and all clothing including
boxers, tee shirts - everything! ugh.

Silk velvet(silk and rayon)is getting harder to find, even online and I usually
need to check fabric out in person. Over the past ten years, the few specialty
fabric stores in my area have closed due to retirement of owners and economy.
Even the one good quilting fabric store may close.

The fabric and craft stores I can get to by bus are also closing or moving to
locations further out west, and the new stores are smaller.

I only dress dolls now in historic costumes, so thank goodness for my fabric
stash I do have. And I haven't made one in over a year, but hope to start up

I don't see any blue-green or green however.

And my local Hancock sells velveteen in the fall, but not velvet. It may be
that your stores only carry it seasonally. Did you ask any of the clerks? My
store will order fabrics for me if it is one they carry on a regular basis,
 like their velveteens.

Re: [h-cost] where has all the velvet gone? (rant)

2010-01-19 Thread Kimiko Small
I have dealt with swatches from the second company. They will tell you that
their producers tell them it is 100% silk velvet. But do a bleach test and you
will find as I did that the velvet is a regular silk/rayon velvet. I told them
that, and they still wrote back that they stand by what their producers tell
them, and that their burn test shows otherwise (note I did a bleach test, too,
not just a burn test). I am sure they make more money selling silk making false
claims like that.

So, unless they actually have gotten in real 100% silk velvet in the past few
years, I would order a swatch and do a bleach test first on any silk velvet to
confirm their claims before placing a full order.

[h-cost] how to fix a pulled seam

2010-01-19 Thread Julie
Help!
I have a favorite jacket I'm trying to save. The fabric is a plain weave silky
fabric. The seam was just sewn with a straight stitch with no seam allowance
treatment. The stitches are just pulling through the seam allowance making
fringe. It's on a 2 piece sleeve near the elbow.

What are my options to save this? It's pulled right to the seamline in several
places. I'm guessing I'll need to use a zig zag stitch but that's about as far
as I've gotten. There's little to no seam allowance to work with.

Great. That's what I wanted to know. That would be a nice fabric for
1880s and 1920s, when some Renaissance-inspired fabrics were used.

I refrained from listing links I found to some linen velvets because
they were all sofa weight. Has anyone ever seen a linen velvet woven for
 clothing?

Re: [h-cost] The term hennin

2010-01-19 Thread Lynn Roth
In British Costume form earliest times to 1820, by Mrs Charles H. Ashdown, it
states on page86 that earlier than 1460-1480, the steeple Headress was
popular.  This style which was more flat on top in England was called HenninsIt
further states that it is attributed to Anne of Bavaria, Queen to Charles VI of
France.  The word Hennis was forcibly derived by some French writers from the
old verb gehenner(modern gener), to trouble or incommode.  Apparently the way
to wear it was at a 45 degree angle on your head.  I have no idea how accurate
this is.  I do know that it was a very popular headress on the continent during
that time.  I also know that there is a smaller type that was worn in Persia.
The ones in Franch were very tall and pointed.  The  ones English were also
very tall and looked like elongated flower pots. i hope this hewlps. LynnI

Perrine and Mane's book on costume gives one explanation, but since they don't
footnote anything, it's difficult to know if they are right.  I know that metal
headpieces of the same shape are found in pre-and Islamic graves in central
Asia.  One source I have read (and I cannot remember which, since it was years
ago) said it came to Europe due to contacts with the Islamic countries.

I do not know why you are looking it up in OED as it isn't English. (Did the
 English wear hennins?)

The word is used in modern English (and it's in the OED as such), and the OED
gives etymologies, so I was hoping for a clue -- but as I noted, OED is not my
reference of choice for costume terms, just what I happened to have at hand.
I'm not at a library today.

I was rather hoping someone had already trodden this ground before, so I could
give my inquirer an accepted answer. But it's not a question I'm going to be
able to take time to research, and I don't expect anyone else to spend a lot
of time on it.

I am not 100% sure where I saw the info but I believe
it is Old French or possibly of Neitherland origin. I vaguely remember
something about hennin and a cockscomb association.
I think the modern Dutch word for cockscomb is hanekam. I am unsure what the
 medieval word would be.

That's as good an idea as any, and probably more likely than hent or
henne. Julian was probably right to look at medieval Flemish, but that's way
out of my range of references at hand. Overall, though, it's sounding like
there isn't a previously researched, accepted etymology. Rather, it might be
good subject for a research project. In this case, for someone else, not me!

Regardless of etymology, though, even one contemporary inventory reference
that uses the word would answer my inquirer's question, as she was told the
word wasn't actually used for the headdress in the period, except perhaps as a
term of derision.

Re: [h-cost] how to fix a pulled seam

2010-01-19 Thread Becky Rautine

iF THE JACKET STYLE WOULD LOOK OKAY WITH A TRIM OVER THE SEAMS, TRY THAT.
ZIPGAG OVER THE SEAM BEFORE STITCHING THE TRIM OVER IT. ADD SOME NEW STYLE TO
AN OLD FAVORITE. JUST DON'T GO OVERBOARD. MAYBE YOU CAN FIND A SIMILAR CLOTH TO
MAKE SOME BIAS TAPE TRIM THAT WON'T BE SO OBVIOUS AS A REPAIR JOB.

 Help!
I have a favorite jacket I'm trying to save. The fabric is a plain weave
silky fabric. The seam was just sewn with a straight stitch with no seam
allowance treatment. The stitches are just pulling through the seam
allowance making fringe. It's on a 2 piece sleeve near the elbow.

What are my options to save this? It's pulled right to the seamline in
several places. I'm guessing I'll need to use a zig zag stitch but that's
about as far as I've gotten. There's little to no seam allowance to work
 with.

Re: [h-cost] how to fix a pulled seam

2010-01-19 Thread Linda Rice
If the jacket isn't lined, or if you can get the lining out of the way, use
a bias tape to reinforce the seams. Just sew it flat down on top of the
seam, on the inside. On the outside you'll see a line of stitches on each
side of the seam. This may or may not be acceptable to you visually, but it
may be all you can do to save the garment. You may want to first re-sew the
seams to get the fringey bits taken care of, before you do the reinforcement
tape.

Re: [h-cost] where has all the velvet gone? (rant)

2010-01-19 Thread Kathy Stormberg

I just went to Fabrics R Us last week, and they had cotton velvet in 2 or 3
dark colors (forget which ones) for $9/yard. Hancock Fabrics in south San Jose
also had cotton velvet as of November, they had black, blue, green and red.
They call it velveteen and some of their less than knowledgeable employees do
not understand cotton velvet. I think it is something like $12 a yard.
Hancock Fabrics on line may also have it if you search for velveteen.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this place yet:

http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/

They have a big selection of cotton velvet, although stretch velvets, printed
velvets and upholstry velvets are all mixed in the same spot. Anyone for pink
and taupe plaid velvet? Their prices are usually decent to great and I've
ordered from them a number of times with no problems.
