Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Julie, You did not say whether your ensemble was for an evening dance event or not. My particular interest is clothing accessories suitable for dance. In this specific case, I have over 100 period images of ball gowns depicted with white gloves to the elbow or higher. There is exactly 1 image that I can find which is non-white. Many other images show the lady in her gown without gloves at all. Some images are tiny and the detail might have been omitted for clarity. Some images are for instruction purposes where showing gloves might obscure the pose of the hand. Still other images are fashion plates where the lady is often in the last stages of dressing so might not yet have put on her gloves. If you're not dancing, then I have no useful info for you, except that the era was crazy for gloves. You could hunt up the Beau Brummel piece on correct gloves for gentlemen, but he was a bit, um, excessive, shall we say? --cin Cynthia Barnes cinbar...@gmail.com On Sun, Jul 6, 2014 at 1:35 PM, humbugfo...@att.net wrote: I am making a Regency evening gown for a friend. Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Thank you, everybody, for all the wonderful suggestions. I had no idea that there was so much color in gloves in the Regency. I thing the suggestions of either fawn colored gloves or a sky blue will be best, but it will be easier now to find the right ones with a much wider color palette to work with. Thanks! Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Greetings, I collect Regency Fashion Plates, so hopefully my input might help. Oddly enough, the single most popular color depicted is a rather bright sky blue, even when wearing garments of different colors. I can never keep the number of buttons and the lengths they represent strait, so I will say that in all the cases that long sleeves weren't worn, they came up just short of the midway point between wrist and elbow. The color which seems to be the second most popular, was a kelly or grass green (the majority of the parasols I've seen from this time are usually that same shade of green) in the same cut and length as the blue ones. Given the fact that the fashion plates rarely depict the gloves matching the gown, I would pick a bright contrasting color (such as a sunshine yellow) and wear them with panache. It will also rule out any question of it being a mourning gown. I hope that this helps. I would recommend searching for Regency Fashion Plates on-line and see the styles for yourself. Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
One sees funky-looking colors of gloves in plates.Of course white kid gloves tend not to be startlingly white, but they are also very expensive and hard to clean. So maybe go with a cream, or maybe a grayish-blue? Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Grey gloves were fairly popular in the Regency era and wouldn't look too 'matchy-matchy'. Grey, being a neutral, would also be wearable with other colours. -Kate ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Greetings! While this is not my era of research I do handle quite a few gloves and know just enough to find portraits to help others on their journey in finding gloves suitable for their gorgeous gowns. What I have found may not help but I hope it will at least point you in a direction to experiment on a color. The portraits that I have seen of ladies in black gowns that are not of a mourning nature wear either fawn colored full gloves or skin toned lace fingerless gloves. What you may want to do is take a few fabrics of the colors you think may work and lay then with the gown next to your arm and photograph them. This will be your test if the color will not only look proper but if it will go with your skin tone as well. The quickest place currently for you to find portraits of ladies in this era wearing black with gloves is actually Pinterest. From there you can search out the images at their source or in your books for better looks at the hands. :) I hope this helps. :) Franchesca -Original Message- From: h-costume-boun...@indra.com [mailto:h-costume-boun...@indra.com] On Behalf Of humbugfo...@att.net Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2014 1:36 PM To: h-costume@mail.indra.com Subject: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves I am making a Regency evening gown for a friend.
