Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish revisionist history

2023-02-02 Thread Chava Pinchuck via Hasafran
A book by Yehuda Avner (author of *The Prime Ministers*), *The Ambassador,*
has been called a "counter-historical thriller," not exactly revisionist.
Here's the plot:

1937. In a fictional turn of historical events, the British Cabinet accepts
the recommendations of the Peel Commission, establishing a Jewish State in
the Land of Israel. Dan Lavi is a young diplomat sent by Ben-Gurion to
serve as the country's first ambassador to Berlin, in an effort to save as
many Jews as possible under the controversial Transfer Agreement.
Surrounded by the terror and atrocities of the Third Reich, Dan struggles
to uphold good relations and diplomatic protocol with those who want him
dead, to negotiate Nazi party politics and Allied pressures, to reconcile
his love for his family with his loyalty to his country, and to stop the
Final Solution even if it costs him everything.

I also recommend *In the Garden of the Beasts* by Erik Larson, chilling
non-fiction about "why America stood by as Hitler rose to power" and how so
many lives could have been saved if the United States listened to its
ambassador to Germany's warnings and concerns.

2021-06-30 Thread Chava Pinchuck via Hasafran
Thank you for sharing.

708 E. 5th Street (where they lived) was torn down with other tenements to
create green space in the neighborhood. Interesting that Henny is listed at
"Yety."

By the 1910 census, they had moved around the corner to Avenue D, where her
father set up his store. When we lived in the New York Metropolitan area, I
made my family visit the building. It is not the best neighborhood, so I
think we stayed in the car. People were wondering why we were there!

Re: [ha-Safran] Schooling educators about the Holocaust

2019-07-18 Thread Chava Pinchuck via Hasafran
Hi,

This list is from some presentations I gave a while ago, but I think they
are still relevant:

*The Book Thief *by Markus Zusak - 10th grade and up
*Rutka's Notebook* - 10th grade and up
*T4 *by Anne Clare LeZotte - 9th and up
*Yellow Star* by Jennifer Roy - 8th and up
*Emil and Karl* by Yankev Glatshteyn and Jeffrey Shandler - 9th and up
**Nicholas Winton's Lottery of Life* by Matej Minac and Peter A. Rafaeli -
9th and up
***Salvaged Pages: Young Writers' Diaries of the Holocaust* by Alexandra
Zapruder

*Adult Book for Teen Readers (most likely 11th and 12 grade)*

The Girl in the Green Sweater* by Krystyna Chiger and Daniel Paisner
*Tropical Zion* by Allen Wells and *Dominican Haven* by Marian A. Kaplan -
about German Jews sent to farm in the Dominican Republic
*Defiance* by Nechama Tec
**Sarah's Key* by Tatiana de Rosnay

*Video available - *Nicholas Winton and the Power of Good*. This clip is
very powerful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKkgO06bAZk. He passed away
in 2015 at the age of 106.
** MTV made a the movie, * I'm Still Here*, based on the book:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_cpvkIU6IY
***FIlm *In Darkness* is based on the book. It won an Academy Award in 2012
for Best Foreign Film. The green sweater is part of the collection at the
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:
https://www.ushmm.org/collections/the-museums-collections/curators-corner/a-cherished-object-kristine-kerens-green-sweater
Film available (starring Daniel Craig)
* Film available (heard it was not so good)

This bibliography is a little dated, but I like the way it was organized:

Re: [ha-Safran] ISO the right call number

2018-09-26 Thread Chava Pinchuck
Hi Amy,

I usually checked my local public library to see what they did with the
book:

I see that *Survivor Cafe* is classified differently by several libraries:

306 - Self-help

304.663 - Factors affecting social behavior - population

155.93 - Environmental psychology

Using Weine, I would probably create a new number under z131 (Psychology)
and title it "Trauma."
