[ha-Safran] Subject to change: Jewish-Arab relations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, etc. in LCSH and LCC
Dear colleagues, As some of us well know, correctly applying the subjectheading Jewish-Arab relations has been a challenge. Roger Kohn of the Libraryof Congress (LC) has previously presented at AJL (2019) regarding the use andmisuse of this subject heading, yet we catalogers still struggle to accuratelycapture a book’s content using the subject headings as they’ve existed thusfar. To this end, the last time I came across a mis-appliedJewish-Arab relations subject in a bibliographic record (for the 2021autobiographical novel Maḳlubah), I reached out to Roger. He suggested weapproach LC’s Policy, Training, and Cooperative Programs (PTCP) Division withthe hopes of finally getting greater clarity on the correct usage of thesubject. We were thrilled to discover a Cooperative, Training, and PolicySection (CTPS, a section of PTCP) that was not only interested in clarifyingthis specific subject, but open to working together with us to find better, more accurate ways to describe the materials we collect and catalog in thissubject area. Our thanks go to Nancy Cooey and Melanie Polutta of CTPS. What started as an inquiry regarding the scope note of onesubject heading blossomed into a project encompassing 15 proposals! Theseinclude 4 new subject headings, 8 modified subject headings, and 3classification schedule modifications. Our thanks go to Roger for his heavylifting in preparing the actual proposals. Before submitting these proposals toLC’s subject editorial board for the formal review process, we’d like to give you the opportunity to hearwhat the proposals are and contribute your feedback. We have scheduled a Zoom session with Melanie and Jasminpresenting on May 17, 2023, at 10am EDT. This time is meant to accommodate bothwest coast and Israeli participants. We’ve allotted 2 hours in order to allowtime after the presentation for questions. We will be recording the session forthose unable to join live. Please register here. [ha-Safran] author of Di Yidishe kolonial-bank
Greetings all, I have a copy of the 1901 work Di Yidishe ḳolonial-banḳ : ihr ṭheṭigḳayṭ und ihr tsuḳunfṭ / fun Ben-Zeʼev. The current information in OCLC identifies Ben-Ze'ev as Hilel ben Ze'ev Malakhovski (authorized form: Malachowsky, H. Re: [ha-Safran] Hebrew vs Gregorian Calendar Dates (Dina Herbert)
Hi Dina, because Hebrew dates can span either side of the Gregorian year (i.e., a book published in Tishre of 762 would be 2001, but a book publish Iyar 762 would be 2002) the date would be transcribed 762 [2001 or 2002]. However, if there is more information to be found on either the t.p./t.p. verso or in an introduction/approbation that provides more information (e.g. a month or, sometimes, the name of the Torah portion read that week), the date could be pinpointed to the specific year. E.g., if the t.p. says Tishre 762, you could put 2001 in the 300 $c. As for the dates in the fixed field, you would code for a single date (DtSt s) and the earlier of the two years, i.e. a 762 [2001 or 2002] in the 300 $c would be coded 2001. For more information see section 1.4F in Paul Maher's Hebraica Cataloging Manual, online at https://lib.stanford.edu/files/Hebraica_Cat_Manual_Feb_2006_Draft.pdf (p. 33 of the PDF, p. 27 of the scanned text). Good luck and have fun! Is there a standard way (or accepted way) to list the date, since it crosses both 2011 and 2012? Do people: a) Write the Hebrew date only (5772) b) Do a range (2011-2012) c) Pick a Gregorian date (2011 OR 2012) d) Some combination of the three OR something completely different. Many thanks!
