[ha-Safran] Books to give away

2024-03-05 Thread Rebecca Landau via Hasafran
I have the following books to give away. I have listed below or am I
supposed to send the books to a central place?

The books are as follows:

The case for Israel / Alan Dershowitz. Hoboken, N.J. : John Wiley & Sons,
c2003.

Chanukah - its history observance and significance published by Mesorah
Publications Ltd, 1981.

A History of Judaism ( in 2 volumes) by Daniel Jeremy Silver and Bernard
Martin. New York: York, Basic Books, 1974

The Jewish Marriage anthology by Philip and Herman Goodman.Philadelphia,
Jewish Publication Society, 1965.

The Jewish People, their history and their religion / David J Goldberg and
John H Rayner London, Penguin Books 1987.

I would prefer to give to one place and if someone wants to pay for postage
that would be great. I live in the Philadelphia area in case someone
locally wants

Re: [ha-Safran] Film Recommendation Needed

2022-11-14 Thread Rebecca Landau via Hasafran
two films come to mind.

Suggestion for a film is a Canadian one that I saw

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outside_Chance_of_Maximilian_Glick__;!!KGKeukY!2G_FB1W4xUJ48RMzomjGxPp9y7WNvCb2DByBsLC2sVN8Epr4hg-OfPxRLB-j2TGExTn9SCNaLSse5SswSKA$

The outside chance of Maximillian Glick. It is from 1988. Read the
description. I don't know how easy it is to get a good copy.

Another excellent one is The mad adventures of Rabbi Jacob,
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mad_Adventures_of_Rabbi_Jacob__;!!KGKeukY!2G_FB1W4xUJ48RMzomjGxPp9y7WNvCb2DByBsLC2sVN8Epr4hg-OfPxRLB-j2TGExTn9SCNaLSseemdj7Ag$

Actually The mad adventures of Rabbi Jacob is a lot of fun. I saw it in
French with English subtitles. I have seen it several times. Check it out.
I don't know how the dubbed version is and I would recommend the French.
I saw it several times & it was enjoyed by both Jews and Non Jews as it was
shown in Saskatchewan once at the Regina Public Library

You can also look at the imDb site for each film

[ha-Safran] 7 sent back to Canada after using library lawn to enter US from Quebec hasafran

2021-07-21 Thread Rebecca Landau via Hasafran
My husband and I actually wandered into that library. We were driving on
the highway. We passed through customs into Canada and went off the
main highway to find something to eat. As we entered the nearest town to
the border town we noticed there were speed limit signs in miles instead of
kilometers. We saw the library and visited it. ( Entrance in the US and
books are in Canada)

There is a black line running through the library noting the boundary.
Apparently there was a fire in the library/opera house and the question was
which insurance company U S or Canadian should settle. I think that was
when the line was drawn.

Another story about the library is that there was supposed to be a trial

"In the early 1970s, there was a rumor that the Haskell may serve as the
venue for a much-anticipated Beatles reunion. At the time, John Lennon
lived in New York City and was “line bound,” meaning that if he exited the
U.S., reentry would have been problematic. George Harrison was prohibited
from entering the U.S. altogether. The Haskell’s unique border location
could eliminate these sticky immigration issues to open the door for a
Beatles reunion in its 400-seat opera house. Unfortunately, law enforcement
feared the crowds would reach unmanageable proportions, so it was not to
be."
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://haskellopera.com/blog/event/beatles-return-studio-two/__;!!KGKeukY!hMCTsWJ6KYGV7245b6oDVb_yZEi-80B-pAcFqQxNU9cTlg5BYwVnVsVmgZuaxGG2xUA$

The librarian told us that the library was afraid too many visitors might
come and take away souvenirs from the library property

60 Minutes did a segment on it years ago.

[ha-Safran] Request for book recommendation

2013-03-25 Thread Rebecca Landau
To all,

Someone asked me if I could recommend for them any good novels (adult)
on Jewish or Biblical themes. The person has read books by Milton
Steinberg and Anita Diamond.

Any recommendations would be welcome! Thanks.

Best wishes for a Happy Pesach

Rebecca
