[ha-Safran] Short story publication

[ha-Safran] Library weeding
I am continuing to try to find homes for books that I weeded from the school library where I worked for many years (I retired last summer). Would anyone like a collection of Bialik's poems? The binding is not in great condition, but the paper is intact and there are a couple of portraits (covered in tape). Or does anyone have an idea who might want this? I don't want to throw it out. כתבי ח.נ. ביאליק : בכרך אחד ובשני ספריםAuthor:ביאליק, חיים נחמן.Publisher: ועד היובל, , Tel Aviv, 693 [1933] Robbin KatzinChicago, IL__ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran@lists.osu.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.osu.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.osu.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran
Re: [ha-Safran] Painful weeding decisions
I had to do a heavy weeding in all sections of the K-8 school library where I worked until my recent retirement. I also was loathe to weed the the Sholom Aleichem, Chaim Potok, etc. titles. But in the end, I realized that 1. no one had checked them out of the library for years, and 2. we are a school library, not a library of last resort. If some library has these books in your area (or they are easily obtainable through ILL), and they don't circulate, it may be time to let them go. [ha-Safran] Disposing of weeded books ; books "dumped" on our school
I am the librarian of a K-8 school, and we have many Judaic books, both Hebrew and English, that do not get used in our school, or that are duplicates. After offering the volumes in good condition to my colleagues, community members via a Facebook group, and select volumes through the Buy, Sell, or Swap Sefarim- in memory of Rav Reuven Margolies ztl Facebook group, I am at a dead end. I hate throwing books out / sending them for burial, but I am going to have to do it. Any suggestions? I also have been the unwilling recipient of many bags of mostly old Hebrew books that were literally left in front of our school building when we were closed. After sorting out the books in poor condition, that belonged to another library, etc., I am still left with books that it kills me to throw out. There is a limit on how much time I can spend trying to find new homes for the books. For instance, a ten volume set of כתבי הרצל was left here. A quick check of Worldcat shows that it is owned by four libraries in the U.S. If anyone wants it for the price of postage, it's yours. Otherwise, I have no choice but to throw it out. [ha-Safran] Elazar classification number question
Hello, I am cataloging שיחות מוסר by R. Shmuelvitz. There doesn't seem to be a number in Elazar that would work specifically for mussar works. The index lists 733 for the Musar Movement, but that would be more appropriate for a historical treatment. What number have you used for similar works? Thank you. [ha-Safran] Day School Libraries - reopening survey
Here is a summary of the nine responses to my Google Form survey that was sent out on Hasafran (eight from day schools, one from a synagogue school): Are students physically returning to your school this fall? All but one school have students returning to school in person or in hybrid mode. Where are you teaching library classes? No schools are teaching library classes in the school library; 5 are teaching in the classroom, one both on Zoom and in the classroom, and one only via Zoom. One has not yet decided. How will students select books to check out? There were a variety of responses to this question, with many schools using more than one method: Students will select books from a cart that is brought to the classroom - 5 They will select books from the OPAC, and the books will be delivered to the classroom - 6 Students email their choices, which are then delivered to the classroom - 1 Students fill out a Google form to make book bundles for individual students to browse - 1 Dedicated books will be used in the classroom during free reading (DEAR) time - 1 Teachers can borrow books, which will be quarantined for 3 days upon return. Students probably won't check out books - 1 Have reserved books delivered to students at carpool - 1 EPIC and pdf - 1 Not decided yet - 3 I did not include a question on how to handle book check in (quarantining the materials, how long, etc.). If you have decided how you will be handling this in your school library, please email me and I can share the responses. Better World Books does not take non-western script books https://www.betterworldbooks.com/go/library-donation-guidelines. I recommend that someone who can identify the books decide which ones should be buried. Even the dictionary is an issue, since it has all the (Hebrew) names of G-d, but as a whole should not be put in genizah (and I have yet to get a straight halachik answer on how to dispose of old dictionaries). I have had this issue recently, with many books dropped off at our school that we cannot use. No surprise, none of the Jewish awards were listed there. I contacted OPALS support and asked them to include both of the above awards and the AJL Jewish Fiction Award in the list. Within an hour I heard back from them that all three of these Jewish Awards have now been included in the list. This makes entering the information into the catalog record easier. The list is alphabetical and you have to scroll through it to find them. I thought other OPALS users would be interested in knowing that OPALS has made them available in the drop down list. [ha-Safran] Old Hebrew / Judaic textbook
I am clearing out cabinets full of old elementary Hebrew and Judaic textbooks. Are there any libraries that collect this type of historical educational material? I am loathe to throw them out or place in shaimos, but will if no one is interested in them. [ha-Safran] Books about Modern Orthodox children
I am the librarian in a Modern Orthodox elementary day school. Most of the children's books from Orthodox publishers that I have seen are written about the more chareidi part of the community. While I do purchase some of those, I would love to include books in our collection that are more reflective of our students' lives; however, there doesn't seem to be much out there in English. Any suggestions?
