I had assumed this was an activation issue. Did this configuration ever
work? If not I would definitely revisit your switch and port values. I
would also make sure things are really plugged in, etc.

It would be easier if I could see your configuration, but below is a
brief example... The switch domains are 60 (X'3C') and 160 (X'A0') and
the ports are fc1/5 (X'04'), fc1/9 (X'08') and fc3/2 (X'41').

Re: FICON vs ESCON CTC's

From a management perspective FICON is simpler if your configuration
requires numerous pairs of ESCON channels to get around ESCON limits
(i.e., implementing interesting candidate lists to avoid message
CBDG089I) and not to mention allowing you the flexibility to implement a
true any-to-any scheme that makes tasks such as moving systems among
processors nothing like the old days.

to
provide maximum redundancy:
CHPID PATH=(50),PARTITION=((CELVMP),(CELVMP)),SWITCH=00,TYPE=FC
CHPID PATH=(54),PARTITION=((CELVMP),(CELVMP)),SWITCH=01,TYPE=FC
CNTLUNIT CUNUMBR=7100,PATH=(50),UNITADD=((00,016)),

IODEVICE ADDRESS=(7100,016),UNITADD=00,CUNUMBR=

If the definition is valid, so if 50 fails,54 can take over without any
human internention.

So Please help check if above statements are valid.

Thank you!

I don't mean to detract from Debbie's problem, but in case there is
merit...

Q: Does the effect you are seeing apply only when using the ISPF
Productivity Toll (IPT)?

A: No. No prior to OA20772 the problem could be duplicated with and
without IPT.

Q: APAR OA20772 applies only to users of IPT?

A: Yes. IPT has its own enhanced TSO shell with an output line number
option. OA20772 provided relief for the problem in the sense that it
honors the specified output line number.

Q: Perhaps you have better describe the effect you are experiencing in
more detail.

A: An example, with z/OS 1.8 as opposed to z/OS 1.6 TSO command output
begins with the available space on the screen where the command was
issued instead of a fresh screen.

To do this, the service provider was to limit CPU available to our z/OS

complex and not just for our image under VM. Is this correct ??? Is
there a better way to get a MIPS or

I am trying to delete some old console UCB's and running into the
'device pinned' error message. I thought I read about a way to unpin
these devices so they could be dynamically deleted without an IPL. I am
at z/os 1.4 and 1.7.

My archive search results were not successful.

some of the best people at PH liked XEDIT better, but they learned it

Its funny how things work out when you've been away from ISPF for a

When I would edit something at Lands End on the mainframe, I would keep

Until now my Shark has been defined as two control units attached to
four channels.
After adding additional disk capacity it will appear to be four control
units on those four channels.
I would like to dynamically activate the two new control units and
associated I/O devices.
When I tried to do this, it failed to activate. It seemed that the
channels had to be offline,
but the existing Shark DASD has to be online; so we took an outage and
did a POR. Was the POR unavoidable? I ask because now I have to change
the definitions of the new CUs, giving them different LCUs, and I fear
that we'll have to do another POR unless one of you can show me how I
can do a dynamic activation here.

I don't know what hardware you have available... If you have peer mode
capability you need to use ICP for the channel path type otherwise for
compatibility mode if I recall correctly you need to use ICR/ICS.
Unless you want to override the values the control unit and device
numbers are suggested for you when perform the connect to CF channel
path. This is not a physical connection, but do give up two channel
paths.

I do not understand the differences between your IOCDS and IODF. Could
you build the IOCP input data set (HCD 2.3) for the 2064-215 in question
and resubmit the pertinent parts?

Otherwise in reviewing just the aspects of device 398 it appears the
following should be MODEL=X:

TUBE380 IODEVICE UNIT=3278,ADDRESS=(380,25),MODEL=2,
   CUNUMBR=(D381)

Or based on the following your missing the CNTLUNIT that coincides with
CUNUMBR=(0380):

TUBE388 IODEVICE UNIT=3270,ADDRESS=(388,19),MODEL=X,STADET=N,
   FEATURE=(DOCHAR,EBKY3277,KB78KEY),CUNUMBR=(0380)

The DEVMAP for 398 looks good to me.

It depends on the processor type you have and whether you have FICON, or
not.

The z/990 tends towards a GIG for HSA, and you need at least a 50%
cushion.
But, I would plan for twice as much as you are currently using.

You can display the memory usage through the HMC (I forget how).
Or, you can figure it out by how much you have installed vs how much you
have allocated to LPARs.

D IOS,HSA

Only displays the number of devices defined, NOT memory (at least the
last time I looked).

Re: HMC : Dynamic I/O

It really depends on how big the IOCDS is, how much is being reserved
for dynamic expansion, etc. The Processor Resource/Systems Manager
Planning Guide and Support Element Operations Guide have good
information on this. As mentioned previously the support element has an
HSA Estimation Tool. As an absolute guess, baring FICON, as a place to
start I would figure about 512MB.

Greetings!

Odd question. Is it possible to have APF/LNKLST libraries reported
or locatable by the RACF DSMON (Data Security Monitor) report, but
not listed in the SYS1.PARMLIB(PROG00) member? I ran a comparison
between the two and found three libraries on DSMON that weren't in
the PROG00, and 16 LNKLST libraries in PROG00 that were not found
on the DSMON report. The system is IPL'd daily, so I'm not sure if
there is a separate mechanism to activate APF or LNKLST libraries
outside the SYS1.PARMLIB process. I'm also unsure of the security
implications regarding such a mis-match.

I'm cross-posting this over at RACF-L, but I just wanted to see
what the sysprogs here have to say on the subject.

Many thanks.

Hi Tim.

Good questions/comments.

I would actually want them logging on to do their work. The area
management is planning on moving the consoles to is (as far as I'm
concerned) an unsecured area. People come into and out of this area on
a regular basis with nobody seeing them. The idea mgmt has is that the
operator will always be there so it will be secure, but we have 1
operator per shift and the printers and tape drives (not robotic) are
located in the computer room so the operator will often be away from the
console.

As far as the operator issuing meaningless commands once in a while,
that's OK because that means they're at the console. My biggest concern
is when they're away from them that somebody could come in and cause
considerable damage while they're unattended. That's why I am asking
about the auto-logoff. I am OK with them even using a single ID for
everybody.

Re: DASD Only Plex

2006-04-17 Thread Neubert, Kevin (DIS)
If the CHPIDs are shared, except for CTC CUs and Devices, why add new
CUs and Devices? Via the HCD panels you should be able to get by with
the following: Define, modify, or view configuration data, Processors,
Work with partitions, Add, Enter Partition name, etc. and Update CHPID
Access and Candidate Lists.

Kevin

Subject: DASD Only Plex

The configuration we are using is Couple Datasets, no coupling facility,

hence DASD only. The CTC's are SCTC's. We have gone over the CTC
definitions and are about to again. The CHP's used are all from the
original sysplex definition. New controllers and devices were added for
the
new LPAR. The new devices seem to be fine on 5 of the original 6 LPARs
(as
diplayed with a D M=CHP(xx) command). The HCD definitions for the new
devices were copied from an existing device / controller. Any help would
be
appreciated.

Re: DASD Only Plex

2006-04-14 Thread Neubert, Kevin (DIS)
I do not really understand the question, but it sounds like the new
system should have identical access to the channels, etc. I would
research the Channel Path Access/Candidate Lists for any problems. You
should be able to obtain a Channel Path Summary Report by selecting the
following from the HCD panels: Print or compare configuration data,
Print configuration reports, CSS report and CSS summary reports. Be
aware devices can also have Candidate Lists.

Kevin

We have a 6 LPAR DASD only sysplex. We need to add a new LPAR to the
configuration. Using existing CHP's, control units and devices were
added
for the new LPAR. A working unit was used as a model. The new devices
connect to 5 of the 6 LPARs, 1 LPAR comes up as Path not operational.
Does
anyone have some insight as to what I need to look at? Thanks in
advance.

Re: IODF and IOCDS out of sync

2006-04-04 Thread Neubert, Kevin (DIS)
Regarding what's different about the IPL process... Nothing if you
still had the IODF that corresponds to the IOCDS. To make a change the
hardware and software need to be in sync.

The active IODF per D IOS,CONFIG is what you are running with.

MVS Listers,

We are in the process of justifying the requirement of having multiple
levels of SysProg job titles depending on experience and knowledge.

At the same time provide management with information as to why SysProgs
are
higher salaried than application programmers. They are at a loss as to
why
that is. Weird that they do not question why a network tech makes more
than
the applications also.

Can someone guide me to where I may be able to locate such info?

Should your COPY have PURGE?

At this time I don't have access to any DASD to try what you're doing, but
the following using tape works for me:

//SYSINDD *
  DUMP TRKS(0,0,3338,14) -
INDDNAME(DISKIN) -
OUTDDNAME(TAPEOUT) -
CPVOL -
ADMIN

//SYSINDD *
  RESTORE TRACKS(0,0,3338,14) -
INDDNAME(TAPEIN) -
OUTDDNAME(DISKOUT) -
PURGE -
CPVOL -

Subject: Problem copying VM volumes under z/OS

I'm trying to use DFDSS under z/OS 1.4 to copy my z/VM 51 volumes and I am
getting the

ADR307E (001)-OPNCL(11), UNABLE TO OPEN VOLUME HI8801, 16
From message guide :

The VM-formatted volume does not have an OS-compatible VTOC
beginning on track zero, record five.
I try to format from z/OS, but without success with the copy, but when I
format the output volumes under z/VM (ICKDSF CPVOLUME)
its is OK.
I am using the sysin :
COPYTRACKS(0,0,3338,14) COPYVOLID -

Is it the only way to copy the volumes :
1) Format the volume from z/VM
2) Copy using DFDSS from z/OS
or maybe I can format by z/OS ?
Thanks.

Re: 64-bit question

2006-03-13 Thread Neubert, Kevin (DIS)
Regarding an accidental CPC deactivate...

If you deactivate a CPC with active systems you should be receiving a
warning message identifying active systems by name along with a message
stating the action being performed is disruptive before you can proceed.

Regarding accidental object selection...

Each object has the capability of being locked for disruptive tasks. Before
you can proceed with an IPL, deactivate, etc. you must unlock the object.

OK, I know how to change a work IODF using the ISPF HCD dialogs. Is
there a way to use batch? What I want to do is create a batch job to
make specific changes to a work IODF in order to change LIBRARY IDs when
we go to disaster recovery. It's not a big deal to document how to use
HCD, but I would prefer a more batch oriented way, just so that I
don't need to assume HCD knowledge in a disaster scenario.

Oh, we don't have any money for a product, so IBM and/or OEM vendor
products to do this is not an option.

Re: Defining CFP in HCD

I've included them in mine without any problems. The only downside I can
think of offhand would be if you were adding another ICF to CPUH as only one
ICF per CFP is allowed in the access list.

I have two CPUs. CPUH and CPUG. Each CPU has two mvs partitions and
one ICF. In my example, CPUH has LPAR1, LPAR2, and COUPLE0H. When
defining the CFP chpid on CPUH ( which will be used to communicate with
CPUG), should COUPLE0H be in the partition access list. Or should it be
defined like a CFS with only the MVS partitions in the access list.
