in terms of Oracle skill sets either.  Nothing to bother writing home about

If any company is considering a move from z/OS and DB2 to SQL Server or Oracle

would truly want to know about it.

If you have been successful in obtaining and cracking the RACF database (or a

presumably uniquely identifiable.  (Like a physical key but usually 
electronic.)  
 
It isn't so much that good guys are getting harder to find as it is that bad 
guys are getting a little bit sneakier.

will not die.)

How about, just before V XCF,OFF, the SETXCF commands are issued to

We, too, experienced this problem in DR testing.  I chose to recreate the 
problem - and FIX it - during our z9-to-z10 upgrade since we would then have 
the opportunity to establish a working DR method and document it for all (of 
us) to see.  We are still using our CFRM file from 2005.  (Sysplex is 
relatively 
new to this site.)  
 
My DR view is that that clean shutdowns are for whimps.  Perfect the error 
recovery path and skip everything else.  Dual path is often inefficient in 
computer logic and it is also inefficient in human processes.  It is simply 
amazing how that shift in viewponit can open up a lot of possibilities.  (For 
one 
thing, system shutdown can be blazingly fast.  Startup doesn't have to be a 
daily disaster if you've planned ahead.)  Think of how much your automation 
logic would change for the better if it was ALWAYS working from the viewpoint 
of recovery.

You cannot get rid of the connections, as that requires XES code to actually

disconnected.

Skips idea of activating a CFRM policy that does not contain the soon-to-be-
gone CF and then delete the connections and structures while XES can still 
get at it is the right idea. The only other way is to do the initial IPL on the 
new CFs with freshly formatted CFRM CDSs (which incidentally we always do - 
guess why!).
 
 
The past is the past -- perhaps you should retry your experiments with 
current software and see if things have changed?  My experience is recent 
and it seems to be substantially different from yours.  

The old connections to old CF structures are indeed gone - without going out 
to the old CF to do it, so your explanation (above) seems to be in need of 
additional data or additional experiments.  
 
We kept our old CFRM - what we DID use was a new, different policy since the 
old CF had a different model number (same serial#) as the new CF.  We 
activated the new policy, FORCEd any non-pending structures and we were 
good to go.  
 
My guess as to why you do what you do is because you found a path that 
worked for you.  That's fine, but there is another path that works... for me 
and for Cwi, too.  (Once might be lucky but more than once in a row is 
repeatable.)

Yes, that's what we discussed doing for our upcoming test, too.  The 
compelling reason to do what we did this past Sunday was to establish/confirm 
procedures for a Plan B and possible Plan C at DR.  
 
The problem with relying on the DR CFs is that the CFRM CF entries are 
specific to the model and serial involved ... and are therefore too closely 
tied 
to the whims of the DR vendor.  If the DR vendor du jour upgrades or replaces 
the CF system and give us appropriate notice then Plan A will work without 
deleting or rebuilding anything (as you say).  Trouble is, that vendor planning 
communication hasn't been all that reliable or timely in the past.  That meant 
that having a Plan B and a Plan C seemed like a really good idea.  
 
I don't hate the idea of defining a fresh CFRM at the DR site; I dispute the 
widely held belief that there is no other option.

client site.  (I don't expect that you will find that many sites customize that

Some sites certainly do that but certainly not all sites, nor is the format 
common by any reasonable definition.  Some folks stick the date (in various 
formats) into the field, some plant the PUT or ESO level into the field, some 
use both.  I've seen many combinations.  I have seen sites use the field to 
identify different systems in a shop and (in much larger entities) to identify 
different shops throughout the corporation.  I don't know whether outsourcers 
make use of the field in a manner similar to Todd's idea.  
 
Smaller sites tend not to be aware or be too burdened with other work to 
bother updating the field at all.  
 
To Wayne's point, there is no common, standard place in any IBM-standard 
data structure that holds such a Universal Customer-ID value.  (I agree with 
Wayne.)  The CPUID ought to be unique (at least until PSI is able to sell their 
hardware).  
 
I don't see any compelling reason why customers would want to have to 
maintain such a value.  (Customers don't see other customers' dumps so they 
don't have the need.)  
 
Perhaps some ISVs use the license key values to accomplish Todd's goal?

always, up to you.  How you respond might be a wee bit more tempered.

user's desktop. That stops IND$FILE and ftp transfers directly to the
user's desktop. I am fairly sure that it stops doing cut'n'paste as
well. What it does not stop is ftp to their share on the server, then
email the code to themselves. But this is becoming more of a PITA to the
user, which does help to discourage them. It all depends on why they are
doing it. (cost vs. benefit to them).

This same concept can be applied to other systems such as Linux.
 
 
I think that a determined programmer would just take screen shots to a file - 
or just take snapshots with a camera (or continuous video) to capture the 
data for post-processing by OCR software.  (I do something very similar with 
my genealogy hobby... not terribly difficult or expensive if you are 
determined.)

There are many methods, but the crudest one cannot be protected except

...and, lest anyone think that Ted's crude method would be too crude to be 
useful, it is trivial to create a VB program that steps through the source, 
screen-by-screen, while taking snapshots that it copies to notepad (or 
straight to a PC file).  Grabbing several thousand lines of source wouldn't 
take 
any more time than it would to page through several thousand lines of source 
on the screen.  Many TN3270 packages may even provide sample code with 
the distribution.  
 
Either you trust your programmer's ethics or you shouldn't provide access to 
the treasured source.  There is no in between.

Your exit seems to expect FILTER( exactly at the end of the command

Assuming your earlier versions looked for FILTER(*) at the end, that would
have worked.  Or looking for FILTER(SI1*) at the end would have worked.  
But
not looking for FILTER( at the end.
 
 
The core issue with his search for FILTER( was identified by Binyamin Dissen 
previously: the CLC in SRCHLOOP was coded as if the CLC instruction could 
use 3 general purpose registers -- the R9 in that line is what's wrong.  
 
Either the OP needs to execute (EX) the CLC or make use of CLCL or (in this 
specific case) use the correct length for the string FILTER( (which would be 
7, not 9).  Better yet for this specific case, use L'FILTER as the CLC length 
so 
it is computed as assembly time.

I think its time for us(old mainframers) to jump on the new  age

The mainframe community has had (1) SHARE and (2) the CBT tape (et al) for 
decades - many decades.  (I wouldn't lump GUIDE into the same category, but

for quite a few of its subcomponents for many, many years -- up until the 
advent of the internet, which brought communication without travel 
requirements.  
 
Us (old mainframers) grew up knowing how to preserve our knowledge and 
pass it along.  Anyone claiming the contrary is woefully uninformed.

How about a totally new EX type instruction. This one executes the
single instruction built into a 64-bit register. This could handle any /
all instructions from 2 to 8 bytes in length. And since the largest
instruction  is 6 bytes long, that is all of them. Just create the
instruction in a register, then execute the register contents.
 
 
Why not also allow the EXreg instruction to execute UP TO 8 bytes worth of 
the register contents?  In other words, if you have less than 6 byte 
instructions to execute (say a 2-byte plus a 6-byte instruction) why not allow 
BOTH of them to potentially execute within the single EXreg instruction?  
 
Then why not also allow an EXreg-multiple instruction to support up to 16 (or 
15) registers worth of instructions preloaded into the registers to operate, 
much like the PDPs of old did?  (Not that slow, of course.)

It depends -- if you print the LSPR report from the .PDF the z10 information on 
page 85 was forced (by IBM) to fit on a single page and they used their new 
femtofont to make all of the configurations fit.  
 
I suppose that's fair since the numbers are almost legalese so small print is 
what it is all about, right?

From what I've read, you can run Windows on a zArch machine using the
BOCHS emulation code. Now, why would I want to put the world's least
reliable OS onto the world's most reliable hardware?
 
 
Funny you should ask.  Maybe because many of the Windows (Server) outages 
had to do with non-parity memory?  Or because of the memory protection 
schemes used (or not) on other hardware?  
 
Or because it blends in nicely with that whole green stripe thing on the front 
of the z10 box??? 
 
(I don't see IBM devouring its own children with the z10 announcement - AIX 
and pSeries boxen seem safe to buy (for now); I see the z10 attempting to 
make advances on the HP and Sun boxen.  Solaris can be run on the z9 but 
I'm not at all sure there's anything worth keeping in HP-xX, is there?)

The question really needs to be researched from a different perspective: 
 
  Does this 408 CPU-seconds come from (1) a peak time of day, or (2) is it 
evenly distributed throughout the entire 24 hour period, or (3) is it primarily 
from off-peak (overnight) timeframes?  
 
If it is the first then the cost is substantially higher than it appears when 
just 
looking at raw numbers - even to their mindset.  
 
If it is the second then the cost is still relatively expensive during peak and 
is 
a (small) contributor to earlier upgrades and higher software license fees.  
 
If it is the third - using primarily unused or mop up cycles then it isn't so 
bad - even with a 1960s mindset.

check the U.S. Patent Office.  Do a search on 'TPZI' and you will hit some of

You are exhibiting a z/OS bias!  
 
z/VM waits with a CPU loop (so it doesn't need to come out of a wait state 
when it is waiting) so it would run just as hot when it was idle as otherwise.  
(Unless there is special code to account for machine perspiration?)

I've been running VM more off than on since PLC 5 and I'm certain that the 
behavior that I 
referenced WAS in VM... at some point.  But if you  Lynn Wheeler say it isn't 
there now, 
I'll believe you (unless/until I can prove you wrong, of course).  
 
But I know back in the VM/HPO or (maybe) early VM/XA days it was true that VM 
put itself 
into a tiny loop while it waited for work.  The loop was in a unique-to-VM PSW 
key so that 
the hardware monitor (the speedometer) could tell the difference between work 
and wait.  
 
Or am I the only person who remembers that?

You have completely missed the point:  the list owner (Darren, in our case) is 
the true fundamental value to this list.  The hardware  operating system are 
meaningless in our context.  The site hosting that hardware/OS is providing us 
with funding (mostly, lately, to enable pointless off-topic meanderings... but 
I 
digress) but it is their funding of the list owner's salary that is the real 
deal.  
 
Moving (or even _thinking_ about moving) somewhere else - without Darren - 
is borderline blasphemy!

total is more than a single engine, so adjust your calculations accordingly.  
(We have a 6-way and were off by a factor of 6 until we adjusted; then it hit 
spot-on and worked nicely since then.)

1.8 at least.

OA21346 for JES2 Dynamic Exit support - status??

quite anemic (no projected close date at all; which seems odd to me).

No responses from that or from another recent request for information.  
(Apparently I'm either off where the trains don't run -again- or else the 
information was viewed by others potentially holding it as 'strategic' and non-
shareable.  I'd bet on me being off where the trains don't run.)  
 
I would have thought that a pure JCL high speed DD-to-DD file connection 
across LPARs would have been used more often in the wild.  I know (from my 
days inside) that there was at least some interest/use in socket connections 
between BatchPipes and AIX boxen (since I wrote an APAR to fix the odd case 
of a zero-length logical record coming in from AIX; BP supported it after the 
APAR.)  (*shrug*) 
 
I guess people are happy writing data to storage, using FTP to ship it from 
storage to storage via sockets, then reading it back into a program.  ALL that 
FTP I/O is unnecessary overhead.  
 
Without BP, to paraphrase Popeye the Sailor, Well SLOW me down!

One PMR on such a system would put IBM in the red.  Who would pay for

One PMR on such a system would put IBM in the red.  Who would pay for

IBM has been implementing the 'solution' to that for the past year or more:  
There will be no PMRs from home customers since the 3270 interface reached

support line and there is no support issue left to solve.  
 
 
But I wonder if the SOHO z/OS support issue could be really addressed by 
assigning it to a third party company (SOHO z/OS Support, LLC) and then let 
them come up with a business model that works for customers, themselves 
and IBM?  (Maybe that's something that FSI already proposed to IBM?)

Do you have a coupling facility?  (My understanding was that you don't.)  If 
you do not have a coupling facility you will not be able to use DFSMStvs 
(Transactional VSAM) since it requires RLS, which requires a CF for at least 2 
structures.  I expect that you knew that but this stuff is archived.  
 
We have found (just this month) that the elapsed time for the batch job is 
sometimes unchanged and other times it actually ran faster with DFSMStvs.  
The CPU time is much more difficult to measure, since SYSB's CPU time is 
spread across a lot of components.  From the measurements that we have, we 
believe it to be approximately equal (hard to guess what the VTAM  CICS 
dispatcher overhead for the SYSB stuff actually was).  
 
The clear advantage of DFSMStvs is that it does not burden the CICS QR TCB 
with the batch job's VSAM file processing while still maintaining data buffer 
coherency and integrity.  It does what it says it does without hurting 
transaction throughput.

Indeed, that is what the IBMLINK Help Desk has had me do on a few

DFSMStvs logs - Is DASD-only a possibility?

We're looking to activate DFSMStvs and since we are doing this in a monoplex 
(single-LPAR sysplex) we are wondering whether TVS' logs need to use CF 
structures or if they can possibly be defined DASD-only.  The examples use CF 
structures of course but are they actually required?  
 
Has any other site successfully used the DFSMStvs primary  secondary logs 
without any associated CF structures?  
 
We are wondering since the DFSMStvs log code was cloned from the CICS log 
code and CICS allows for either CF or DASD-only.  (Depending on the year 
that the code was cloned it may or may not allow for DASD-only, I suppose.)

Depends, of course.  For starters the weight is relative to the aggregate for 
the CEC - if that is only, say, 2 (with 2 LPARs weighted at 1 each) you ought 
not expect to have any problems at all.  Probably not your case though.  
 
Is your LPAR sharing any resources with any others?  GRS or MIM come to 
mind here... if you need to run those on your resource challenged LPAR then 
you are a troublemaker.  
 
If your whimpy LPAR is a monplex, sharing nothing then no, it isn't a problem 
per se.  More of an opportunity to catch up on your reading while you wait for 
it to respond.  
 
(We do it with a sandbox system and it is pretty pokey when the other LPARs 
are guzzling MIPS.  Still, it all works but at an HO-scale. Just not the way to 
run a real railroad.)

understanding of PCF's working storage it can be a matter of minutes before 
you can build a working prototype to bypass PCF.  (At least it was for me 
about 20 years ago.)  I would not recommend it on that basis.

The parm that you are passing could be a CLIST, constructed along these
lines:

PROC 0
do some allocates and stuff
start ISPF
LOGOFF

As soon as the user leaves ISPF it should log them off
 
 
If you are an applications programmer bent on actually doing your job (in spite 
of spiteful managers elsewhere):  To defeat Don's mechanism you need to 
clear the TSO command stack prior to leaving ISPF.  Read the TSO 
publications to find out how to do that.  It isn't particularly hard and is a 
worthwhile exercise in programming by itself.

Seems to work OK.

That might be too early - under some odd timing conditions you might succeed 
(FSVO 'succeed')  in logoff prior to ISPF (which would frustrate the end users 
and waste the company's resources... who's the bad guy then?)  
  
I would suggest pushing out an operator message in an ISPF initialization exit 
and letting automated operations issue the STOP command.  That way you 
know the user was safely tucked into ISPF.  
 
I would also suggest that it should be mandatory that this 'feature' be 
verified 
 documented as an intended interface by IBM before using it.  (I've used it in 
the dim past for a few things but none were particularly long-term.  It worked 
for me, for example, when running a CLIST in a started task doing TSO 
RECEIVE (as in XMIT/RECEIVE) processing many years ago.

The issue is command control NOT anything else. If you had access to
the library then you could bypass all command checking by running the

the 2 byte security key was (read only protected storage) if I
remember correctly you could do anything. Its the same story with
RACF though if you are authorized you can bypass any security package.

I well understood what PCF's goal was, but my point was that it was FAR too 
easy to circumvent the command 'control' portion.  As long as you (or a friend) 
had program access to ANY library that you could execute from (without using 
TSO TEST) you could install your own command processor (same name, 
different purpose) that could then trivially circumvent PCF.  There were other 
means of bypassing PCF, too, but I usually used that, my favorite mechanism.

service to switch both member name and dataset name.

OP did not state any performance requirements; he was interested only in 
alternatives to DYNALLOC.  I provided him with one.  
  
Furthermore, OPEN-J has a different path length than traditional OPEN.  Run a 
few benchmarks.  
 
I agree with you  others that BPAM is yet another possible alternative for OP 
to consider.

You might have overlooked an interesting gem of a feature of z/OS JCL: 
FREE=CLOSE.

If you need to provide several alternative tables, you might be able to do so 
strictly in the enveloping JCL by doing something like this:

Note that the DDNAME is replicated three (3) times above, for example.  
 
For the cost of a full OPEN/GET/CLOSE you get to read the record from the 
first member and be positioned to the second member on your next 
OPEN/GET/CLOSE.  Not high performance but pretty high function and very 
easy to maintain (just change the JCL).  
 
z/OS does not limit DDNAMES to a single appearance in a step (although you'd 
be surprised how many think otherwise).  By crafty use of multiple DDs with 
identical names that resolve to different datasets (even to completely 
different data set names).  Since any DD can use traditional data sets or 
PATH= it is also quite general.  
 
Nearly every high level language supports file opens and closes so nearly every 
high level language can perform this trick.  
 
All you need to do is stop looping through the open/close once the open fails.  
(You ought to provide for error recovery if the open fails anyway so that might 
not be asking too much.)

However, the generic/unauthorized Assembler Reference entry for IARVSERV 
has an example that comes close enough to what you need in Example 6.  
What Example 6 shows is how to share within an address space... but all you 
need to add is the source ALET and the target ALET in order to make the jump 
through the spaces.  (The reason the example works within a single space is 
that the default ALET value (0) in both the source and target specifications; 
the primary space is just a special case that works well in their example.)

You are doing more work than you need to -- re-read the LOAD macro service 
documentation and pay more attention to what it returns in its registers.  
 
Specifically, pay attention to what it returns in register 0 and register 1 BUT 
ONLY IF register 15 has the expected/required return value.  
 
For example, your GETMAIN will need to be in the appropriate 31-bit/24-bit 
MODE (RMODE) and the hint for that is in the high-order bit of register 0.  
 
The GETMAIN length is derived from the low-order 3 bytes of register 1.  (Be 
careful here: the length is DERIVED from the low-order 3 bytes -- you will 
need to do a little (simple) arithmetic AND pay attention to some special 
cases.)  
 
You only really need to use CSVQUERY if the low-order 3 bytes of register 1 
are zero because the load module's length is greater than 16M, per the 
documentation.  (And you might want to reconsider whether you really want 
that module loaded into dynamic ECSA if it is bigger than 16M... at least I 
would be more pensive under that condition.)

broke or otherwise failed).  Call it RAIT 0 (a la RAID 0) if you like.  
 
I would also be considering making the output tape blksize closer to 256K as 
you mentioned.

Search the archives for [(Mulder) and (purge)] and you should find this:
 
 
 z890, z990, and z9 machines have a 2-level TLB.  Nothing 
 lower than OS/390 2.10 will run reliably on a machine with a 2-level
 TLB because lower releases than 2.10 do not do some of the necessary 
 TLB purges.  I have heard some speculation that you might be able to 
 get around this by running an older MVS under VM, with the following
 VM trace:
 
 #CP TRACE IPTE RUN NOTERM 
  
 Of course, this would cause some performance degradation, since VM would
 intercepting and simulating every IPTE for this virtual machine.  I don't 
 know of anyone who has tried this.  It was just some hall talk with 
 a VM developer.
 
 There may be other issues that would prevent an older MVS from running
 on a modern machine, such as missing support for a larger storage 
 increment size.  The storage increment size might also be avoided under VM if

I believe it is the simple result of IBM being a market driven corporation.

It isn't as if IBM is ignoring the other customers.  There are plenty of things 
in 
z/OS 1.8 and 1.9 for all customers.  The z/9-BC is certainly applicable to 
small-
to-medium sized companies (and the largest, too).  CICS/TS 3.2 certainly has 
interesting  worthwhile things in it for a local insurnace company (or two).  
 
We would all like IBM to be all things to all customers... but what are the 
odds 
of that working out equally well for all?
