As other already mentioned, LPAR definition is the same for z/OS and
z/VM (the distinction is between OS nad CF).

OS config contains distinction between MVS and VM type.

However, especially when using Linux under VM, it is worth to mention
how to isolate MVS devices from VM. It can be done via Explicite
device list - at LPAR level, while z/OS is usually filtered at OS
config level. First method is at IOS level, while OS config can be
changed on operating system (and Linux does not honor it).

Re: IOCDS with VM and zOS LPARS

2006-07-28 Thread Brian Peterson
What I did was simply define the LPAR partition for VM on the Processor
List screen using the P line command. When VM IPLs, it automatically
discovers everything it has access to, so unless you have some unusual
device VM cannot automatically identify, it's not necessary to create an OS
definition for the VM LPAR.

Coming from MVS, I was imagining this would be harder than it turned out to
be. VM is much more advanced than MVS in this area in that it has (almost
amazing) auto-discovery capabilities for attached devices.

Sure, I've done it. You need to do two things. First, create an
partition just like you would for another z/OS LPAR. While doing this,
you can put the appropriate CHPs on the access list for the new LPAR.

Then go into Operating System Configurations and create a new OS
configuration. Make the Operating System Type equal to VM instead of
MVS. Now create any new devices needed and put them, along with any
required existing devices, on the access list for the new LPAR.

Make a production IODF, then a IOCDS. Do a POR with the new IOCDS
(unless on a z9?) to create the new LPAR. Define the LPAR
characteristics on the HMC screens like you do for an MVS LPAR. Eg. the
LPAR weight, the number of CPs to assign (shared/dedicated), the storage
size, etc.

Also, to be very blunt, you could just create a new z/OS type LPAR and
OS configuration and IPL z/VM in it. The LPAR definations don't really
care what OS (z/OS, z/VM, z/VSE, z/Linux) is running in the LPAR. All
that I can see different between the MVS and VM values in Operating
System Type is that MVS has an EDT associated with it and VM does
not.

Very high level, but there is really no real difference at the IOCDS
level between the types of LPARs, other than a CF type LPAR.

We run 2 VM and 2 z/OS LPARS on our 2086-170. I can get the IOCDS on Monday and
send it to you.
