Re: [ilugd] Broadband Connection
Hi All, My MTNL broadband connection was finally setup a few days ago and I'm getting great throughput on it (downloaded fiesty over the net - I love this :)). Just a warning though. Apparently the MTNL people have run out of ports and there are about 70k pending broadband applications in Delhi. If you're going to apply for a broadband connection, avoid MTNL. You might not get it for several weeks despite their promises. I got my own connection after about 60 phone calls to the local area manager and threats of consumer court to the GM. Might not work everytime. Parijat On 7/6/07, Vikram Ranade [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Just do the wifi thing yourself. Re: [ilugd] Broadband Connection
In the context of all the great things that were said about MTNL broadband recently on this list, I just want to report that my broadband connection has been down for last four days. I have made innumerable calls to their stupid help line, spoken to the local area manager, and several times to the local MTNL SDO and the lineman, made one trip to the MTNL office. Nothing has happenned still. Till now, they have not given any credible information on what is wrong or made any efforts to fix it. The 1504 helpline people only record a complaint and they have no mechanism to see what happenned to the complaint. They are clueless technically. If it works, it is great. If your connection stops working some day, you have had it. Re: [ilugd] Broadband Connection
Scanning MTNL's ip space, I noticed with a faint sense of horror that a script kiddie could DOS MTNL's service pretty thoroughly in the space of about half an hour, since most of MTNL's modems allow wan access and have a default username/password combination. Other details are then available, which will apparently allow a cracker to abuse the victim's account. Allegedly MTNL doesn't use caller ID as part of its authentication. If this is true (I find it hard to believe this), then MTNL is being inexcusably negligent. Of course, MTNL doesn't have much incentive to stop this, since they just pass the bill on to users (and if the user doesn't have an unlimited account, too bad). If this is not true, then the crackers who are using cracked accounts are likely being naive idiots. So another tip for users is: Make sure you have all WAN services disabled in Management-Access control- services to avoid this sort of abuse. regards PJ ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Hi! I use Airtel broadband in DLF with a 256kbps unlimited connection, which defaults to 512kbps, for Rs. 600 per month. I use a Netgear DG632 router with built-in modem that I bought myself. This gets me a discount of Rs 100 per month on my Airtel bill. I use a separate 8-port wired switch at home to connect 4 laptops and 1 desktop. The arrangement works very well for me. I have used Micronet ADSL modem cum router in the past. That got fried due to electric voltage fluctuations. I have not been able to find a service centre for Micronet as yet, despite many attempts at Nehru Place. So try and steer clear of Micronet as far as possible. The service from Airtel is very good and the Netgear router is also good. FWIW, I would recommend them both. Re: [ilugd] Broadband Connection
i use bharti broadband / airtel with their rs 999 unlimited with 245k by day, and double by night. it works the way you expect it to. used sify earlier, and am glad i moved to airtel. airtel's phone support sucks at times. so be forewarned. however, they do resolve problems promptly enough. i also hope they start offering 512K to home users. they're sitting on so much dark fibre. hth :-) n ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Mostly the faults were in the line (cable cuts caused by digging for sewer line) and not in their DSL equipments. Lineman gave me his mobile no. the day he connected the phone and he was available within 10 minutes I called him. Needed to visit telephone exchange only to pay bills. -N -- Peace, Love and Compile the kernel. http://www.nishants.net __ Yahoo! India Answers: Share what you know. I also need to setup WiFi at home. Do these service-providers help set that up too? Well i am a regular user of MTNL TRIBAND. And it's service has reinstalled my trust into govt. supported telcos. :-) The plan that i have is the 999/- 256K Unlimited Initially i had a 200-C plan that had a cap of 400M per month, but gave a d/l speed of 2Mbps!!! But that speed actually burnt a big hole into the pocket thru the monthly bill from MTNL ;-) All unlimited plans from MTNL do not give the 2Mbps d/l speed :-( For the WiFi connectivity, i have DLink ADSL 602G Router. It has worked great for more than an year.Incidently i plugged my two pin telephone jack into a two pin socket, with the other end connected to the router. That two pin socket turned out to be an electricity outlet and there was a tiny blast. But my robust router could happily bear that and it has been more than 10 months since this incident.Heh! One problem that i face with WiFi is that strange sound in the telephone line.Does anyone on the list face a similar problem? That's all Hope that helps! rohit. ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Please be specific. IMHO people from telecos rarely know anything about security or networking. My personal experience with MTNL's Tri-Band has surpassed all expectations. I am on a 256Kbps unlimited connection @ Rs 999/-. I have a Dlink 502-T Adsl router (provided by MTNL) and a D-Link 2100 Wi-Fi AP (i bought this). To this setup connect 3 computers (2 laptops and 1 desktop). The desktop runs Win2k/Debian etch and one laptop runs Ubuntu 7.04 and the other runs Windoze XP Pro (wife's). The Ubuntu Laptop (Toshiba with Intel 3945 wireless) connects to the Internet flawlessly. Please steer clear of Sify and Tata Indicom DSL if you can help it.
