Bismillah [IslamCity] Debating Islam Democracy

2007-11-17 Thread saiyed shahbazi
The on-going debate amongst Islamists in discussion for a on the Internet
provide a contrasting rainbow of ideas and interpretations. There are those who
assert that democracy contradicts Islam completely in the fundamentals and in
the details,. Once such discussant state the following points to prove his
view. He says:

(i) Democracy gives the sovereignty to the people and entrusts them with the
whole matter. Hence, people are the supreme reference in everything. According
to the rules of democracy, people are the source of power. Thus people are the
source of the legislative power, the judicial power and the executive power. It
is people who legislate the laws, appoint the judges and establish the rulers.
This is contrary to Islam which makes the sovereignty to Shari'ah and not to
people. In this way the whole matter is to the Shari'ah and it is the supreme
reference in everything. As for the powers, Islam has made the legislative
power for Allah (swt), not to people.

It is Allah (swt) alone Who legislates the rules in everything, be it in regard
to worship, transactions, the punishments or otherwise. It is forbidden for
anyone to legislate, even if it was a single rule. People in Islam have the
authority - namely the rule, so it is the people who elect the ruler and
appoint him. Thus people are the source of the executive power only -they
select the man who assumes the authority and the rule. As for the judicial
power, this is assumed by the Khaleefah or whoever deputizes for him in this.
It is the Khaleefah who appoints the judges or appoints someone who appoints
the judges. No person from among the people, individuals or groups alike have
the authority to appoint a judge. This is rather restricted to the Khaleefah
and his deputy.

(ii) The leadership in the democratic system is collective and not for the
individual. The power is also collective and not for the individual. The
authority, or the rule is assumed by the council of ministers meaning the
cabinet. The head of state, be it a king or a president, is a nominal figure
who reigns but does not rule. The body that rules and assumes the power is the
cabinet. This is contrary to Islam, where the leadership is for the individual
and not a collective and where the power is also for the individual and not a
collective. It has been reported on the authority...

Respons by Dr. Abdelwahab El-Affendi:

The remarks mentioned above contain a rather large number of contradictions and
misunderstandings that need to be clarified:

1. He starts by saying that the people cannot have sovereignty, but in the next
paragraph, he tells that one person, the Khalifa, must have full, unquestioned
authority. In this he indirectly clarifies the question he tries to bury into
confusion. For the issue here is not God's sovereignty versus that of the
people. No Muslim questions the sovereignty of God or the rule of Shari'ah.
However, most Mulsims do (and did) have misgivings about any claim by one
person that he is sovereign. The sovereigny of one man contradicts the
sovereignty of God, for all men are equal in front of God.

2. The leadership in Islam is indeed collective. The ahadith quoted by the
brother all prove this, in fact. The Hadith about appointing an amir is
directed to the group. It is the group which appoints the amir, which means
that he is accountable to them, and must consult with them. Consultation in
Islam is obligatory, because it is an order from God, given explicitly in the
Quran. What God orders is not optional, but obligatory. Blind obedience to
one-man rule is contrary to Islam. If you have read enough hadith you would
have come across the story of the amir sent by the Prophet to lead an
expedition. One day he lit up a fire and told his men to jump into it.

They naturally refused, even though the man reminded that the Prophet had
ordered them to obey him. When they went back and related teh incident to the
Prophet, he said: If they had entered it they would never have come out of
it. Meaning they will go straight to hell. Any man who claims to be a Khalifa
and orders things that are contrary to reason or Shariah may be disobeyed. In
fact he must be. But if this is not to lead to chaos as happened in past Muslim
history, it is advisable to have insitutions which arbitrate between the ruler
and the people, such as parliaments, an independent judiciary, etc. We need not
copy these instituions, but we must recognise the useful function they serve.

3. The claim that the Prophet regularly defies majority opinion is incorrect.
Whenever the Prophet issued an order or gave an opinion, the Sahabah sometimes
asked::: is this a divine order or just an opinion? This happened in Badr and
during Ghazawat al-Khandaq. When he said it was not divine injunction, the
Sahabah immediately gave a different opinion, which the Prophet then accepted.
Since any person after the Prophet cannot claim the

Bismillah [IslamCity] Civic Involvement: An Islamic Imperative

2007-11-17 Thread saiyed shahbazi
Muslims have to build social and political networks in order to improve the
condition of society, argue two leading American scholars

by HAMZA YUSUF and ZAID SHAKIR

Improving the world in which we live is an Islamic imperative. God says in the
Qur'an, You are the best of communities brought forth for mankind. (3:110)
Abu Su'ud describes this verse in his commentary: This means the best people
for others. This is an unambiguous expression which states that the good
[mentioned here] lies in bene#64257;t provided to the people. This is also
understood from the expression, brought forth for mankind — namely, brought
forth to bene#64257;t them and advance their best interests.[1]

Our Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of God be upon him, said,
God will continue to assist the servant, as long as the servant is assisting
his brother.[2] We can thereby understand that divine aid and succor will
accrue to this community as long as we are providing the same to fellow members
of the human family.

Historical basis for involvement

In today's socio-political environment, concern and bene#64257;t can be
understood as civic involvement. The word civic is derived from the word
city. Hence, civic involvement refers to the meaningful ways in which a
private citizen is best involved in the life of his or her city. Despite its
appearance in a largely agrarian context, if we consider the nature of the
dominant means of economic production at the time of its emergence, Islam is
best associated with the city. Our Prophet, may the peace and blessings of God
be upon him, is identi#64257;ed with the city. God mentions in the Qur'an, I
swear by this city, and you are a free man of this city. (90:1-2)

The Prophet's migration was from Mecca to Medina, from one city to another.
Islamic learning and culture is associated with great cities — Damascus,
Baghdad, Cairo, Isfahan, Samarqand, Bukhara, Tashkent, Qayrawan, Fez, Cordova,
Seville, Granada, Istanbul, Sarajevo, Zabid, Timbuktu, Delhi, and many others.

It was the involvement of Muslims in the lives of these cities, many of which
were established before the arrival of Islam, which de#64257;ned them in their
historical contexts. As Muslims, our involvement in the life of our cities
should similarly leave a lasting and positive mark on them. Surely we have much
to offer in that regard. It is not without purpose that God has placed us in
signi#64257;cant numbers in and around the great metropolises of America. Now
is the time for our constructive involvement in the lives of these cities to
commence.

Such involvement is especially critical in these times of political
transformation and the rede#64257;nition of both the role and scope of
government here in America. As the two major political parties become
increasingly responsive to special interest groups, particularly those
associated with big business, large unions, and wealthy individuals, their role
as facilitators of democratic and civic involvement is being eroded. This shift
in responsiveness is leading to what is referred to as a dealignment of those
parties. This dealignment causes private citizens to search for new
institutions to serve as their primary means of political involvement, which
consequently results in the proliferation of smaller, grassroots civic
organizations. The collective weight of these organizations and their
facilitation of direct citizen involvement in local politics is viewed by some
as the reinventing of American democracy.[3]

Position of Muslims and contributions

The potential contributions of Muslims and the benevolent in#64258;uence of
Islam in this process are tremendous for a number of reasons. In terms of
addressing issues associated with poverty, the social welfare policy of both
governmental and non-pro#64257;t organizations has centered on what has been
referred to as a de#64257;cit model that focuses on the de#64257;ciencies of
individuals and communities, rather than building upon the individual,
associational, and institutional assets and networks that already exist.[4]
This de#64257;cit model systematically weakens citizens and communities, as
the power of governmental and private agencies ascends. As government retreats
from the obligations assumed by the welfare state, the aforementioned
organizations are threatened. Hence, the existence of this ineffective model is
also threatened. As a result, an opening exists for Muslims to provide an
alternative model of civic involvement and activism.

The unique position of Muslims is rooted in the dichotomous nature of our
community wherein less af#64258;uent, largely minority converts and recent
immigrants live in inner-cities, while more af#64258;uent and established
immigrants reside in suburbs. This dichotomy creates a situation in which the
Muslims of inner-cities have a tremendous potential of social capital, or the
ability to draw on developed internal communal

Bismillah [IslamCity] Time To Rethink Rohingya Issue--Asia Post, Dhaka, editorial dated 17.11.07

2007-11-17 Thread S A Hannan

Time To Rethink Rohingya Issue

Press has reported that speakers in a seminar held in
Dhaka on Thursday said that Bangladesh should work internationally to link
Rohingya refugee problem to ongoing democratic movement in MyanmarThe seminar
titled 'Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh: Issues and concerns' was organised by
Neeti Gobeshona Kendra at the National Press Club in the city.
Director of the Kendra Mahbubul Haque Ripon presented a
keynote paper highlighting the plight of Rohingya refugees.
He said according to official statistics, the number of
Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh is 20 thousand, but unofficially this number is
around five lakh. Rohingyas are not confined to Cox's Bazar and Chittagong
only, they are also living in the slum areas of Dhaka and other big cities, he
added. In slum areas the Rohingyas are leading inhuman life posing the risk of
giving rise to militancy again, said Mr Mahbub, also the trustee of the
Kendra. He criticised the role of the government and the civil society for not
focussing the Rohingya issue before the international community properly to
help end their problems.
He suggested that the government should allow
international organisations to provide better facilities for Rohingya refugees.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof CR Abrar of Dhaka
University urged all to help solve Rohingya refugee problem. He called on the
media to play its due role to place the issue before the international
community.General Secretary of Ain O Salish Kendra Advocate Asaduzzaman
suggested for constructive dialogue with Myanmar government.Presiding over the
seminar National Press Club President Shaukat Mahmood said although Bangladeshi
people possess the instinct of helping others, the government sometimes fails
to treat refugees properly.
AHM Nurul Islam, former secretary to Prime Minister's
Office, Mohammad Shafiullah, an academic from Cox's Bazar, and Aminur Rasul, a
trustee of Unnyan Dhara, also spoke on the occasion.

We feel that the seminar has been held in an
appropriate time and the recommendations are also very thought provoking. The
Rohingyas did not get their civil and political rights for a long time like
other minorities in the Myanmar. They have suffered deprivation in cconomic,
social and political fields. It is time to take the matter of their due rights
within the federation of Myanmar with th government and opposition movement
there and also brief the UN representative for Myanmar in this matter. We hope
that the government of Bangladesh as a neighbor and as an affected country of
Rohingya refugees should give special attention to this matter.

The Secret Of Good Health
The secret of good health is good nourishment and exercise. We need daily
nourishing food and exercise to maintain a healthy body and it takes care and
attentiom to fulfil this responsibility. Making the effort underlines our value
and importance as a human being.
However, the human spirit needs the same attention in the form of the thoughts
we have and how the mind puts them to use. Feeding both body and mind with
nourishing food gives a powerful and consistent message to respect and
co-operate with one another. This is holistic good health.

Bismillah [IslamCity] sowing the seeds of discord

2007-11-17 Thread Aisha Abbasi
(An excellent story forwarded to me) There were three bulls, a white bull, a
red bull, and a black bull. A hungry wolf approached the red and the black bull
and told them if they let him eat the white bull he would not have any further
interest in eating them. So in order to save themselves they agreed, and the
wolf devoured the white bull. A few days later the wolf returned and stealthily
took aside the black bull and told him if he let him eat the red bull he would
not attack or eat the black bull. The black bull agreed and the wolf devoured
the red bull. A few days passed and once again the wolf returned as hungry as
ever. He found the black bull and they both knew what was coming next. The wolf
told the black bull to at least try and save himself to which the black bull
responded, 'I was dead the day I allowed the white bull to be devoured'. Whilst
united the wolf could not devour any of them, but once the wolf began sowing
the seeds of discord, he was able to conquer them one at a time. When the black
bull realised what the wolf was up to, it was too late.May Allaah swt save us
from this and may we unite in favour of Allaah swt and his commands. Ameen

  Muslims Globalizing Al-Quds Cause

CAIRO — Drawing the world attention to a place close to the hearts of
world Muslims, Turkey's historical city of Istanbul will host in November an
international forum on Israeli-occupied Al-Quds, home to Islam's third holiest
shrine.
Al-Quds International Forum will bring together a galaxy of dignitaries from
all over the world for the first time, Akram Adeloni, secretary general of
Al-Quds International Institution (AII), the organizer of the November 15-17
meeting, told IslamOnline.net.

We have invited notables from Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa as well
as Arab and Muslim figures, he added.

More than 4,000 dignitaries from the four corners of the globe are expected
to show up.
Leading among notables invited are Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, former
US president Jimmy Carter, former US justice secretary Ramzy Clark, former
Iranian president Mohamed Khatami and Mayor of London Kin Livingstone in
addition to Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the president of the International Union for Muslim
Union (IUMS), Sheikh Raed Salah, the head of Al-Aqsa foundation for
Reconstruction of Islamic Sanctities, and former Al-Quds Bishop Attallah Hanna
have been also invited.

We want to get the Al-Quds case from its inner Arab and Muslim circle to the
broader international sphere, said Adeloni.

The forum focuses on Al-Quds as a human heritage and a civilization on its
own.
Photo galleries, exhibitions and documentaries in different languages about
the holy city's heritage will be held on the sidelines of the forum.

The AII, a non-profit organization established in Lebanon in 2001 with a
permanent headquarters in Al-Quds, organizes the forum in tandem with Turkiye
Gonullu Tesekkuller ( Turkish Waqf of NGOs) and the Union of NGOs of the
Islamic World.

The AII'sboard of trustees features a cohort of Arab and Muslim figures, who
seek to keep Al-Quds cause alive and pass it on from one generation to another.

  Istanbul Declaration

The forum will issue the Istanbul Declaration to defend Al-Quds identity.

The declaration is about a set of facts that prove the Muslims' historical
right to the holy city and entire Palestine, said Adeloni.

It will also underscore that defending Al-Quds is not the responsibility of
Arabs or Muslims alone given the city's human heritage.

The Muslim activist said occupation cannot be accepted retrospectively.

Occupation, obliteration of the city's identity and the evacuation of its
aboriginal people cannot be imposed on us as a fait accompli.

Israel captured Al-Quds in the 1967 six-day war and later annexed the city,
in a move not recognized by the international community.

The city is home to Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Muslims' first Qiblah [direction
Muslims take during prayers] and the third holiest shrine after Al Ka'bah in
Makkah and Prophet Muhammad's Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Its significance has been reinforced by the incident of Al Isra'a and Al
Mi'raj — the night journey from Makkah to Al-Quds and the ascent to the Heavens
by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Al-Quds is also home to some of the holiest Christian worship places,
including the Jerusalem Church and the Greek Orthodox Church.

Israel has been seeking to Judaize the holy city.

Britain's the Guardian daily recently unveiled a confidential UK memo
accusing Israel of rushing to judaize Al-Quds to prevent the city from
becoming the capital of the future Palestinian state.

OFFICEMAX DROPS MICHAEL SAVAGE ADS OVER ANTI-ISLAM BIAS

  (WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/15/2007) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations
(CAIR) today announced that OfficeMax, a leading office products retailer, has
joined a growing list of companies that have stopped advertising on Michael
Savage's nationally-syndicated radio program because of the host's anti-Muslim
views.

CAIR recently reported that Savage, whose The Savage Nation airs on more
than 300 radio stations nationwide, screamed attacks on Muslims, Islam and the
Quran, Islam's revealed text, during his October 29, 2007, program

The Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group called on radio
listeners of all faiths to contact companies that advertise on Savage's program
to express their concerns about the host's anti-Muslim bigotry.

Companies that have dropped ads from Savage's program include Citrix Systems
Inc., a global leader in application delivery infrastructure.

It is encouraging that companies nationwide are choosing not to associate
with Mr. Savage's hatred and bigotry, said CAIR Communications Coordinator
Amina Rubin. Freedom of speech includes the right not to subsidize hate.

Rubin thanked OfficeMax for its prompt response to Muslim concerns. She said
CAIR is asking other Savage advertisers to follow that company's example.

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, has 33 offices and
chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding
of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American
Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Bismillah [IslamCity] THREE TYPES OF MUSLIMS - FOR MUSLIMS

2007-11-17 Thread sbpn39
THREE TYPES OF MUSLIMS

  1) NON-PRACTICING
  2) PART TIME PRACTICING
  3) THOSE WHO TRY TO OBEY ALLAH(swt) IN EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE.

FIRST OF ALL WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL TO ALLAH(swt) THAT HE MADE US MUSLIM. WE
ALL HAVE TO CHECK IN WHICH CATEGORY WE FALL. IF WE FALL IN FIRST TWO
CATEGORIES THEN STILL WE HAVE TIME TO CHANGE OURSELVES.

BEING A MUSLIM WE KNOW IT VERY WELL THAT THERE WILL BE A DAY OF JUDGEMENT AND
WE HAVE TO ANSWER ALLAH(swt). WE ALSO KNOW THAT WHY WE ARE HERE AND WHAT WE
HAVE TO DO TO GET SUCCESS IN HEREAFTER.

BUT WE HAVE FORGOTTON THE TRUTH OF DEATH. WE DO ATTEND FUNERAL CEREMONIES OF
OUR DEAR ONES BUT JUST AS A CUSTOM. WE DON’T THINK THAT OUR TURN IS NOT TOO
FAR.

WE ARE PUTTING ALL OUR EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE LUXURIES OF LIFE AND HAVE NO TIME
TO THINK ABOUT DEATH. WHY DON’T WE THINK ALLAH(swt) IS ALSO PROVIDING ALL SUCH
LUXURIES TO THE UNBELIEVERS. HOW IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE WILL BE LOOSER IN CASE
WE CHOOSE TEY WAY OF ALLAH(swt) TO PASS THE LIFE.

WE THINK THAT ALLAH(swt) IS GHAFOOR-UR-RAHEEM AND BEING MUSLIM WE WILL NOT BE
PUNISHED WHATEVER WE DO. IF IT IS TRUE THEN WHY STRESS HAS BEEN GIVEN ON
FOLLOWING QURAN SUNNAH BY THE PROPHET(pbuh). GOOD AND BAD CAN NEVER BE
EQUAL, RELIGION IS THE NAME OF OBEYING NOT JUST ONLY ACCEPTING.

WE STILL HAVE TIME TO REPENT AND ASK ALLAH(swt) TO GUIDE US. FOLLOWING ARE
THE REQUIREMENTS OF TRUE REPENTENCE:

  1. Asking repentance from ALLAH when alone (specially in
Tahajjud) with tears in eyes and true feeling of sorrow on all sins.
  2. Promise to ALLAH that those sins will not be repeated
again.
  3. In reality leave those sins
  4. Pay back compensate the deserving in case
Huqooq-ul-Ibad broken or ask for forgiveness from them.

WE HAVE DOUBLE RESPONSIBILITY FIRST IS TO FOLLOW RELIGION IN ITS TRUE SPIRIT
AND SECOND IS TO CONVEY TRUE MESSAGE TO THE UNBELIEVERS. ON THE DAY OF
JUDGEMENT THESE NON-MUSLIMS WILL ASK ALLAH(swt) THAT THESE MUSLIMS WERE THE
CUSTODIAN OF YOUR RELIGION, THEY NEVER FOLLOWED NOR CONVEYED YOUR MESSAGE TO
US. LET US BE READY TO REPLY THIS BY ASKING TRUE REPENTENCE FROM ALLAH(swt)
AND FOLLOWING QURAN SUNNAH ALONGWITH CONVEYING TRUE MESSAGE TO OTHERS.

  MAY ALLAH(swt) GIVE US HIDAYA……….AAMEEN

Bismillah [IslamCity] I know what you know not

2007-11-17 Thread PoEtEsS
In the Name of Almighty Allah
  Rabbul Ala'meen
Most Gracious, Most Merciful
 and Most Exalted.

Assalamualaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu

Alhumdoelillahi Rabbil Ala'meen. Was Salaatu was
Salaamu 'alaa Ashrafil Anbiyaa'e wal Mursaleen.

Wa Ba'd:

O people of Imaan! For every human being, the enormity of darkness is more
overwhelming than the intensity of dazzling sunlight. All day long, he or
she enjoys the sunlight but little does he or she deliberate over the source
and meaning of the rays of light. The days of affluence and comfort, however
long they may be, scarcely have an impact upon our attitude and emotions. As
the night falls, darkness vanquishes our faculties and we yearn for some
safe haven to hide therein. As the adversities befall us, we yell and
complains; and all we can see and feel is pain and anguish. So much so that
other wretched people who have hitherto been somehow hidden from our
eyesight suddenly come to our view.

'Oh Allah. Why this world? Are you not the Merciful? Are you not the all
Powerful and the Almighty? Why this misery? Why this bloodshed?' The
positive aspect of the world remains ignored and the negative comes to
surface. The blessings are neglected and the miseries counted. This is man.
The blessed creature!  Perhaps the same is also true of other creations of
Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala. Despite the bitter appearance of pain, it
produces special fruit for the mind and soul. Man's spiritual abilities
become more clearly manifested in the darkness of pain. Reason and human
spirit evolve in the folds of continuous sacrifices and unsubmissive
struggle...to the peak of human perfection.

The most obedient species is obviously the angels. They never get tired of
praising and glorifying the Most Gracious and Supreme Lord and Creator of
the heavens and the earth. They are commanded to do a task and the same is
done without hesitation or thinking about self-interests not to mention any
effort whatsoever to secure them. In the beginning Almighty Allah Subhanahu
Wata'ala addresses all the Angels [Verse 30 Surah Al-Baqara]:

I want to create a vicegerent on earth.

Almighty Allah, being the Greatest and most Exalting from a faithful Muslim
point of view, addresses the angels to introduce His vicegerent. Thus, with
this providential address the mission of man on this Doonya is clarified.
That is, man's mission on earth is to fulfill Almighty Allah's creative
work in the universe. Man's first superiority is that he represents his
Glorious Maker and Creator on earth. The angels objected:

O Almighty Allah! Will Thou place therein one
who will make mischief therein and shed blood?

But Almighty Allah Rabbul Ala'meen responds:

I know what you know not.

O you who believe! And so, Almighty Allah engaged in creating man. And this
is the point which symbols, loaded with profound anthropological
connotations, come into being. Since Almighty Allah Jallah Wa'ala wants to
create a vicegerent for Himself on this Doonya, He must, as a rule, choose
the most valuable and sacred material. Yet He selects the basest matter. In
the Most Holy and Noble Qur'an there are three references relative to the
material that man was made of:

from a sounding clay, like unto pottery, and from mud.

Finally, Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala breathed His Spirit into the dry
mud and man came into being. In the human tongue Almighty Allah Rabbul
Ala'meen is the most Sacred and Exalted Being, while mud stands as a symbol
of the meanest and the basest thing. And the Spirit of Almighty Allah is the
most sacred, exalting, and the noblest part of His being. Accordingly, in
creating man, Almighty Allah Tabaraka Wata'ala did not use His
breath, blood, or flesh, ; rather He blew His own soul into man.
Almighty Allah is the most sublime Being and His Spirit is the finest entity
for which man can possibly have an epithet in his language.

Thus, man who was formed from mud and Almighty Allah's Spirit is a
two-dimensional being. For unlike all other beings which are one
dimensional, man is two-dimensional; one dimension tends towards mud,
lowliness, sedimentation, and stagnation while the other aspires to the
loftiest imaginable point possible. So man is composed of two contradictions
- mud and Almighty Allah's spirit. Thus man's significance and grandeur lie
in the fact that he possesses two poles [mud and the spirit the Glorious
Creator]. It is up to man to choose where to go, towards mud or providence.
And as long as he has not selected either of the poles as his fate, struggle
will perpetually rage within him.

O Ummatul Muslimeen! Once man was created, Allah taught Adam the names of
all things. Man became the possessor of names. At this point the angels
protested: We are made from smokeless fire but man was made from mud. Why
should he have superiority over us? Whereby Almighty Allah responded: I
know what you know not. And in verse 34 of Surah Al-Baqara: And behold,
We said to the angels:

Bismillah [IslamCity] A Week of Islamophobia-reports Ethar Kamal El-Katatney

2007-11-17 Thread sahannan
A Week of Islamophobia

Ethar Kamal El-Katatney*, EgyptToday - Egypt

Tuesday, November 13, 2007
I’VE TRAVELED to several different countries for conferences promoting
dialogue, coexistence and peaceful co-operation between religions: Denmark,
Turkey, the UAE. I’ve met people of all nationalities, liberals and
conservatives alike: German, Lebanese, Scottish. I’ve met people of almost
every religious affiliation: Hindus, Atheists, Jews, and people from various
sects and schools of thought in Islam: Sufis, Wahabis, Shi’ites.
kk
Over and over again, I’ve heard the same questions from non-Muslims. The
same reservations and suspicions. But I can safely say that not one of the
non-Muslims I’ve met abroad, most of who had no idea of what Islam really
was, were ignorant of the extremist side of it. Had they heard of the
concepts of Islam, Iman and Ihsan? Blank faces. Had they heard of radical
Islam, jihad, Osama Bin Laden? Bingo.

American conservative David Horowitz has brought another term into the mix,
declaring the second-to-last week of October as “Islamo-Fascism Awareness
Week,” which he believes constitutes “the greatest danger Americans have
ever confronted.” The week, part of his Terrorism Awareness Project,
organized by the misnamed David Horowitz Freedom Center, of which he is
president. A former leftist turned hardcore right-winger who is also editor
in chief of FrontPage Magazine, an online publication, and founder of
Students for Academic Freedom, he put the wheel in motion for over 100
college campuses across America to hold protests, film screenings, panels,
memorials, teach-ins and sit-ins with pamphlets to distribute with titles
such as “Why Israel is the Victim.”

The theme of this noble endeavour? Oppression of Women in Islam and the
threat posed by the Islamic crusade against the West. His goals were To
explain who the enemy is...A fanatical religious movement associated with
the Muslim Brotherhood [eh?]; to protest the violent oppression of womeh
in Islam [so is he raising money to send to these poor women?]”; and “to
strengthen those on campus who reject the anti-American curriculum of the
tenured left.” The left, he believes, is propagating two Big Lies: that
“George Bush created the war on terror [oh no, the radical Muslims woke up
one day and decided to attack the non-existent troops on their land] and
that Global Warming is a greater danger to Americans than the terrorist
threat [tell that to Al-Gore].”

He also circulated a student petition denouncing Islamo-Fascist violence
against women, Christians, Jews and non-religious people, deliberatly
written in such a way that the failure of Muslims to sign it would
immediately prove his point. Never mind that Islam prohibits violence
against women, and against any other religion if unprovoked (i.e. didn’t
show up in your country with guns).

And who are the speakers that are devoting their time to so splendid a
cause? As Ali Eteraz on the Huffington Post sarcastically puts it: “An
ex-senator that opposes individual rights of women [Rick Santorum]; a pundit
that calls people faggots and considers Islam a cult [Ann Coulter]; a
Christian scholar who is considered a polemicist and an Islamophobe by
conservative Christians themselves [Robert Spencer]; and an intellectual who
has received millions from far right organizations since 2001 [David
Horowitz himself—who made $352,647 in 2005, according to tax records].”

One of the movies screened was Obsession, of which a 12 minute extract is
available online. It starts with a miniscule disclaimer, saying that “This
is a film about the global threat of radical Islam. A violet strain within
the Islamic religion [Not within an interpretation of Islamic religion].
Most Muslims do not support terror [Not Islam does not support terror]. This
is not a film about them. This is a film about a radical worldview and the
threat it poses to us all.” I’ll let it pass.

But what I can’t let pass is that in addition to having no official
representation from the Muslim side, the movie goes on to subtitle Arabic
speakers mentioning love of jihad (the Islamic concept of struggle) as love
of fighting, and shahid (martyr) as suicide warrior. It shows clips from
Arabic TV out of context, and compares Islam to Nazism, because you see,
according to a former Hitler youth officer interviewed, the “fanatic Muslim
world and Hitler both believe that no ideology can exist beyond theirs.”
Basically—if they have the chance, the radical Muslims whose goals are to
kill all the Jews, opress the democracies, and destroy western
civilization, are going to hunt innocent Americans down and gas them to
death. Just thinking of those 12 minutes makes me want to pull my hair out.

The Western Muslim community reacted as expected, calling the week an
extremist and prejudiced campaign seeking to polarize the nation and spread
Islamophobia, bigoted information and a
