Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Brian, Yes, I renamed the normal.dotm template, and also did a repair on Office 365. I tried changing the footer style, but it wouldn't accept a change that way from within the edit field of the style. I was able to change its font size, so changes can be made, though. You guys have given me excellent advice, but so far I haven't been able to resolve this. The good thing is that it works for you, so hopefully I can fix this. I will get a sighted person to look at the screen as well, just in case. Possibly, it might be an Office Word 365 thing as well. I'll keep trying things. Thanks. You could rename the normal.dotm file and restart Word. The normal.dotm template should be created by Word and this might cause the styles to work correctly. However, you have Office 365 and I am not sure if you have the ability to work with those files in that version of Word or not but you probably know whether or not you do. In Word 2013 you go under the user folder, open App Data, open Roaming, open Microsoft, and open templates to find the normal.dotm file. This would at least let you know if the problem was with the styles. Again, though, I don't know if this should be done in an Office 365 installation. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Jean, JAWS should be letting you know that the colors are black on white and not black on black for the footer style. At least with my installation of word the footer style is pretty much the same as the normal style. Being that this has happened when you use JAWS 17 and JAWS 18, it would appear that something might be corrupt with the Word installation. What you might try for a workaround is to select the footer area and apply the normal style by using CTRL+Shift+N. See if you can read the text when the normal style is used in the footer. In either case, JAWS should be reporting the foreground and background colors as black on white when using JAWS key F or when using JAWS key 5. You might also create your own style and then when you move to the footer area and unlink the footer from the previous one, you can select from the beginning to the end of the line and apply your created style. The new style could be called something like "MyFooter." I think you said in another message that JAWS wouldn't read the text when using JAWS 17 and 18 and that you didn't merge any of the settings. Try refreshing the screen using JAWS key with escape key and maximizing the window before typing or reading the text. Sure hope you get it working! Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Brian, Excellent description, and I know that's how it should work. But no matter what I do, I can't read any of the text I'm entering, have entered, or am wanting to edit. Insert-F tells me the footer style text is black on black. That shouldn't matter, I don't think. I didn't import any old Jaws settings when I upgraded to version 18. I just can't find why this isn't working. I also don't see the choices to unlink from previous sections with section breaks, etc. Very strange. I am using Word 2013 but I don't think the steps vary much from 2016. Instead of using the dialog box you might want to use the options in the header and footer group of the insert menu and under the design tab which is added as a tab to the right end of the ribbon after a footer is chosen. To enter a built-in footer you can use CTRL with right arrow key across the lower part of the ribbon under the insert tab until you get to the header and footer group. Using Word 2013, this is done seven times. Tab to the footer menu item and press enter. Alternatively, use Alt followed by N followed by O. The first item is a blank footer and the second built-in footer type is a footer with three areas. If you pick the second one you can enter the footer text in the first area and the page number in the third and use different alignment for the text and page number if you want. If you choose the first built-in footer type you can type the text using nonbreaking spaces between all the words (CTRL+Shift+Spacebar) and then leave a space before entering the page number. Immediately after inserting the page number use CTRL with J followed by shift key and enter. This will cause the text to be left aligned and the page number to be right aligned. If you want to insert a page number using a page field use Alt with Shift and P. Otherwise, you can insert it from the page numbers item under the design tab of the ribbon. You will find the “Link to previous”, “different first page” and other often used options under the design tab. It is a good idea to use section breaks and then insert the blank footer for the new section, uncheck the “link to previous” checkbox under the design tab of the header and footer tools which is added to the right end of the ribbon as a contextual tab, and then type the footer information. To insert a Next page section break press Alt followed by P followed by B followed by N. Go To Footer is a command that can be added to the quick access toolbar or to a customized ribbon group, which might be helpful if you are frequently working with footers. Remember that using Alt with delete will let you know the vertical position of the cursor so you can verify you are working in a footer area. The escape key should move focus from the footer area back into the main document pane. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 17, Word 2016 and footers
Hi Jason, I have now upgraded to Jaws 18, but I am not getting the results you get. I can get to the footer area in both ways as you describe. Once in the footer edit area, text is not spoken as I type, and nothing is readable in the field. Then if I exit the footer dialogue and use insert-F1, I know that footer text was entered. Going back in to edit, I again cannot hear anything in terms of what the footer text is. I also can't seem to find ribbon controls for adding date, time, etc. On this same topic, can you go under Layout and insert a section break and see if you can unlink it from other document sections? I can't identify the button to do that either. The good thing is that you can do this. I just have to figure out why I can't. I'm using Office 365, if that might be different. Re: [JAWS-Users] Signatures in Outlook
Hi Adam, I do not know if there is a better way to do this, but here is what I do when I want to create a signature in Outlook, and how I manage them. I either open a new e-mail message or a Word doc. Type in all of the information I want to include in my signature. This includes contact information and any links to websites. I then proof read, spell check and run JAWS text analyzer. Once everything is how I want it, I open the signature editor in Outlook. Go back to the source of my new signature, and copy the entire thing. Go back to the signature editor, paste the contents of my new signature in to the appropriate edit box, and adjust all necessary setting for that signature. At work I have multiple signatures. My most used is the general/long signature which is set to be automatically added to all messages that I create. The second most used signature is what I call the "Short" signature. This contains just my basic contact information and is automatically added to all replies and messages that I forward. I have a few other signatures that pertain to specific projects that I am assigned to, and I have to add these manually after deleting the automatically added signature. Currently when I initiate an e-mail from a document in Word or Excel, there is not a signature automatically being added to the outgoing message. I have not had time to look into whether there is a setting that will change this, so I manually add the desired signature.
