Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document? Try WordPad.
That depends on what you want to do with the document. importing into Notepad would change the document into a plain text file, and you would lose any formatting. By that, I mean that there were some characters/symbols that were left in the document. Specifically in the example I tried, there was a backslash (\) character at the beginning of some lines. Also, I'm not sure how the document might have looked in Word, but the formatting seemed unlikely. All the text was strung together with no logical line breaks or blank lines. Perhaps I just don't know how to use Wordpad, so if this is the case, some instructions on how to configure Wordpad would be appreciated. Otherwise, are there any other suggestions for free programs to access Word documents? I'm not looking to create or even edit Word documents, it's just that occasionally I'll be given a Word doc that I want to read and sometimes getting it in another format is not an option. Just do the usual save command, control s is the shortcut, and follow the prompts to either over-right the original file, or save it under a different name. If you over-right the original file, you will lose some functions that are in the full version of Word, but you will not lose text or even most of the format, fonts, etc. I do not know how much of that works in Windows 7 WordPad, but I know for sure it does with Windows 10; I just tried it. [JAWS-Users] Soulseek and JAWS?
Hello everyone. Not exactly new to the list here, but I had been unsubscribed for a long time because my computer and JAWS version had gotten so old that there was really no point in me continuing to receive and contribute to the list. Now I've got a new PC, Windows 10 and JAWS 18, so I'm back, and with a question even. I thought I was an old hand at this stuff, but I've recently started to use the Soulseek client, and I'm having some issues, both with the programme locking up frequently and, more importantly with regard to this list, not playing nice with JAWS in unpredictable and obnoxious ways. A part of the problem, no doubt, is that as far as I know, a screen reader user still has to use the old Soulseek NS client, as the QT version, which is regularly developed and updated, uses a portable/cross-platform library that doesn't use standard Windows interface controls and so is really a non-starter with jAWS as far as I can tell. This NS client is really designed for an older version of Windows and although running it in compatibility mode (glad Microsoft still includes this feature) seems to improve things greatly, there are a number of weird things happening. 1. The programme keeps minimising itself or something, so that using the JAWS cursor, which is necessary (as far as I can tell) to use most of the programme's functionality, becomes impossible. Sometimes I am locked out of the menu bar for minutes at a time. 2. Right clicking on things seems to cause JAWS to spontaneously crash about 80% of the time. 3. The application key doesn't seem to act on the item in focus. What I mean is, if you find an item that interests you, you can get a context menu with options to "download containing folder" etc, but it pertains to a completely different item. Simulating an actual mouse click seems to have unpredictable results, although it works some of the time. 4. I can not figure out how to search for a user. My friend did this when I logged in, instantly finding me and adding me to his user list. But I cannot seem to do the same. There may be a graphical button that I need to click? So, any JAWS users, particularly (but not exclusively) those using Windows 10, also using this programme? It is pretty neat and I'd like to find a way to make it more stable. Any pointers, tips, tricks ... are greatly appreciated. Cheers and thanks. JM For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hi Vicki, Are you saying that you have documents of your own that Jaws doesn't read all these attributes, but you've received documents from elsewhere that when opened Jaws does read the attributes? Re: [JAWS-Users] can't find shut down or restart button
Hi Lenny, There are a few things that I've experienced that have helped me in a similar situation, especially if your laptop is a fairly new one. First and foremost, you should confirm that the function, or FN key is not active. In other words, are you able to shut down an application using the alt+F4 command, or do you have to press a third key to accomplish this task. If the former, you need do nothing, if the latter, depending on which company your laptop is from, you may be able to switch this function off, either by using the laptop's native software for modifying it's settings, these are usually provided by the brand of your laptop, i.e. Toshiba, HP, Dell, etc. If these tools are not available to you, or you don't have access t the feature, then you must go through the BIOS set up, and make the changes there. I'm sorry, but I cannot provide detailed instructions on how to do this, as it's been a long time since I've seen the BIOS set up screen, but the status of the function keys are clearly labeled, so, if you have sighted assistance, they can explain what's on the screen, and you can go from there. There is a little section of the BIOS screen that houses an explanation of what each item in the list allows you to change, so if the person uses the arrow keys or mouse to single click on any option, the explanation will appear on the right side of the screen. I don't think that's changed in the years I've lost my sight. Second thing you want to examine is if you may have another application open in the background that you may not be aware of. On my friend's laptop, and on my own that I purchased a few years ago, I found that the camera application was taking over the screen, so when ever I had shut down all applications, it turned out that I hadn't even though Jaws reported that I had landed on the desktop, I hadn't, and had landed on the camera application, which was always on top of the OS, thus constantly frustrating my efforts to go to the desktop once my applications were closed. This option can be shut down on two ways, by going to the task manager with control+shift+escape, then, once in the task manager window, control+tab to the services tab, arrow down the list of services until you find the one that deals with the camera, and set it to manual. This may or may not be desirable, especially if you have sighted people who use the camera function for Skype or some other video application. The other way to shut down this feature is to go through the MS Configuration file, which you can get to using the Windows+R command, then typing in, "msconfig", without the quotes, and pressing enter. On the resulting screen, control+tab to the services tab, and the start-up tab, and uncheck any items that have to do with the camera. Again, same caveat as the above for sighted users of the computer. One thing though, if you get to the services tab and you find less than seventy-five items in the list, then you may have the checkbox to hide all Microsoft services checked, so press the spacebar to uncheck it, then shift+tab back to the list and you should now see a large number of items in the list. The third and final thing you may have going on is that you may have the taskbar set to hide until you arrow to it, or you press the start key. Fortunately, this can readily be fixed by pressing windows key+I, then in the search bar, type "taskbar" without the quotes, and press enter. The result should automatically be spoken by Jaws, which is taskbar settings, so press enter to go directly to that option in your settings. When the page loads up, you'll land on the search field, so tab around, and you'll land on taskbar, which is where you want to be. Keep tabbing until you find the above options, and make sure they are unchecked. You'll know they are unchecked if Jaws reads out that they are simple buttons. If they are checked, Jaws will report it as so. Hopefully, any of all of the above will allow you to return to what you're most comfortable with. Good luck. Re: [JAWS-Users] can't find shut down or restart button
Hello Lenny; If you wish to create a shutdown shortcut, Try the following; 1, desktop, Ctrl+spacebar to unselect any icon, 2, applications key, down arrow enter on, new sub-menu, Now choose shortcut, 3, in the edit box type in, Shutdown -s -t 0 Now tab next, you can give the shortcut a name, example, Shortcut.exe, Now go to finish. Now if you desire, you could create a hotkey for the shortcut. If you wanted to have a shortcut to restart you would use the same steps, instead of zero at the end, use, 01 Hope this helps. Hi Andy, I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice regular old menu system. So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor. It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad. A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list, you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format. Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter. Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet, and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files and folders are! Hello Andy, Assuming you're using Outlook Express, you'll need to change the security settings in your Gmail account. The thing is, with some applications, Google detects they aren't "modern" so it blocks their access to Gmail. You should lower the security setting in Gmail. I don't remember exactly how to do it, but if you would like I can check the settings again. --- I am, therefore I think. Hi All, I received this off list from a fellow list member: Hi Mike, To show number of lines, line number, or many other options in the status bar in Word try the following: 1. Press F6 until Status bar is highlighted. Or, until you hear Jaws report, Status Toolbar. It should be the 2nd press of the F6 key. 2. Press Shift + F10 to show options. This keystroke must be used because a right mouse click or pressing the application key will not. 3. Down arrow through the available options, and when you have found line count or something else of interest press the spacebar to check or uncheck the item. 4. when done making modifications simply press AltF4 or escape key. 5. Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting Contacts
Thanks for your help. I am using Windows Live Mail. I'll keep looking. I don't find the Address List Autocomplete setting under Quick Settings using Insert+V. Unfortunately, this leads me to another issue. The treeview doesn't always behave reliably, even when the screen is maximized. When arrowing up and down, some items are skipped. Even when I arrow right and expand the tree completely, all items are not read. I googled this, and the suggestion was made to log out and log back into the E-mail account. My problem is that the address auto complete feature works for me in Window-Eyes but not JAWS. Thanks again for your help. -Original Message- From: Adrian Spratt Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 12:58 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Selecting Contacts There's a setting in quick settings (JAWS key+v) that might help. Hi, how do I prevent Jaws or any screen reader from saying something like m.yahoo when I start to type an address into the address bar? I also want to prevent it from showing a list of possible sites that it could be in a list as I type. I would love to get rid of all search engines but I don't see how this is possible I looked under search. I'm using latest Firefox any help is appreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] can't find shut down or restart button
to shut down my windows 10 laptop I have to press the start menu key then tab twice and come down with the cursor to where it says power, enter on power and then I think I come down once to where it says shut down and enter there. Hopefully that should do the trick for you. It took me ages to find it. I am having a problem reading a few PDF articles I have just been sent. Once I open the attachments, via Adobe Acrobat DC, I find that I cannot advance beyond the first page of each article, either via the arrow keys, or the page up and page down keys. Interestingly, when I use my arrow keys and the page up or down keys, the visual sscreen advances with no problem. In other words, Jaws appears to be stuck on the first page and is unable to advance through the rest of the file. I'm using Windows 7 and the latest build of Jaws 18 here, along with Adobe Acrobat DC. Any suggestions would be apreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] confusing webpage
This makes perfect sense. I think I will learn Italian! Thank you. Vicki - Original Message - From: "Gerry Ellis"To: Sent: Friday, May 26, 2017 5:41 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] confusing webpage Hi, For languages on a web page to work properly with JAWS you need two things to be in sync. Firstly, you need the JAWS "Detect Language" option to set on in the JAWS settings. Find this by hitting JawsKey plus V then tab to the list of options and down arrow to find the language options. The web page developer also has to tag the correct language for the web page content. Each time the developer wants text to be in a different language they should add a language tag to indicate the correct language. This language tag is part of the html code that is written by the developer or, more likely these days, output by the web authoring tool used by the developer. In this case I suspect that the language tag for the entire site is Italian and is not changed to English for the English text. Thus, JAWS language detect reads the tag that says the text is Italian and speaks the English text in Italian as it has no indication that the languae has changed. Yu can't change this language tag. I hope this is not too confusing. Ciao! Re: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!
Hi All, I cannot now recall the exact sequence of events, but when I bring up Jarte, the title line (JAWS key plus t), says "Jarte (screen reader mode)" >From what seems apparent, Jarte is intended to be screen reader friendly. If you are not getting that same title line, then probably someone on this list will know how to get that setting correct. It might also require a re-boot to take effect, or maybe Jarte needs to be uninstalled and reinstalled, but somehow it Jarte caught on I was using a screen reader and was easy as pie from the beginning. I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description of features. On that same page is also the download link. The installation file you download is small, less than 4 mb. Installation was completely perfect and easy, both for accessibility and for clarity. The link is below, just past my name. Thanks again Andy! Re: [JAWS-Users] where is the numbering of messages settings?
It depends on which application you're using. The two most likely keystrokes are JAWS key+numpad 3 and JAWS key+tab. However, JAWS doesn't give these two details in some applications, including Outlook 2010 and earlier. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of ratshtron Sent: Friday, May 26, 2017 1:24 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] where is the numbering of messages settings? Re: [JAWS-Users] confusing webpage
Hi, For languages on a web page to work properly with JAWS you need two things to be in sync. Ciao! Re: [JAWS-Users] image for windows 3.0
A suggestion would be to turn off all programs and background applications and disconnect the internet so that the system can devote more of its' resources to the image it is building. That normally works for me. -Original Message- From: Lenny McHugh Sent: Friday, May 26, 2017 5:51 AM To: JFW List Subject: [JAWS-Users] image for windows 3.0 I wanted to do a full system backup on my laptop. Re: [JAWS-Users] can't find shut down or restart button
The following commands will shutdown and reboot your system: shutdown -s -f -t 00 shutdown -r -f -t 00 Note: the notation of 00 means the system will perform the task right away. So say you wanted it to shutdown in an hour, then change the number to 3600. Also note, any time more than 00 you do not need to include the -f switch because it is assumed at that point. I always create such icons on any system I work on, no matter if it is mine or not. It is just something to make life a little easier. -Original Message- From: Lenny McHugh Sent: Friday, May 26, 2017 5:48 AM To: JFW List Subject: [JAWS-Users] can't find shut down or restart button I very seldom use my hp laptop.
