Hello list, I am sorry that I did not post this months ago when I said that
I would. Below is a link to a free program that will convert any Kindle book
to MS word, along with a series of other formats. Not only will it convert
the Kindle book, mobi and other files, but it will also retain headings,
links and other elements within the conversion. The gentleman who put this
together is a God send. When I showed this to Dr Denise in one of our
sessions with a student we were almost in tears. As many of you know, the
Kindle deal has been such a painful topic for years now. This program is so
simple that it is absolutely wonderful. I can convert all of the books in my
kindle library strait to Word, txt or PDF with one click. If you are into
making donations, this is a guy that you should support. with no further ado
I will let it speak for itself,

Kate,

I pulled up JAWS to try this and it does work the same.

I highlighted the column I would have wanted alphabetized by holding down the
shift key and arrowing down.

Then I pulled up the context menu by pressing the key just to the left of the
righthand CTRL key. Sorry, if it's got an actual name, I don't know it
offhand. But to the right of the spacebar there are four keys and it's the
third in from the spacebar or, as I said, just to the left of the CTRL key
which is at the far right.

Hope that didn't totally confuse you. :)

Hi Kate,

I'm still using Window-Eyes for the time being but I would think the steps
are the same.

First highlight the names that you want alphabetized.
Then use the context menu and arrow up to sort. The first option is "sort A
to Z." If that's what you want just press enter.

Hope that works for you.

When using the bullet feature in MS-Word, it provides a very clean visual
appearance. Let me see if I can explain. The bullet will be up against the
left margin, or most frequently ¼ of an inch to the right of the left
margin. This is called the hanging indent. The start of the text will be a
little to the right of the bullet. As an example, let's say that the bullet
is 1/4 of an inch wide, and the space between the bullet and the start of
the text is 1/4 of an inch. This means that the text is starting 1/2 of an
inch away from the left margin. This is called the left indent and is .5 of
an inch from the left margin. If the text you are typing is longer than the
line and needs to wrap down to the next line, the start of that subsequent
line will be positioned right under the start of the previous line’s text at
the 1/2 inch mark from the left margin. When you are at the beginning of a
line, you can use the Insert+f command to learn about the hanging indent and
left indent positions. If JAWS announces Aligned left, then you know the
text is flush against the left margin and there is not a bullet at the start
of the information.

The use of bullets makes it easier for the visual reader to quickly move
from one item to the next. Personally, I find it also allows me to quickly
move through bulleted information with JAWS.

HTH,

Annette

Re: [JAWS-Users] kendle for pc

2017-06-20 Thread Jim Fettgather
This is with the very latest Jaws 18 update, from the Freedom Scientific Page.
Amazon Kindle App Support
JAWS now supports reading books in Amazon's Kindle for PC app version
1.19 and later. This enables users to access books purchased through
the Amazon Kindle store right on their Windows PC using both speech
and braille. Books can be navigated using all standard reading
commands including reading by character, word, line, paragraph, and
continuously with Say All. As JAWS reads, pages turn automatically so
you can enjoy a book without interruption.

JAWS can only access Kindle books that support Enhanced Typesetting.
The product details for the book on the Amazon web site indicates if
Enhanced Typesetting is enabled. This exposes the necessary
information to screen readers and provides access to the book content.

Tip: Pressing CTRL+HOME or CTRL+END while reading a Kindle book moves
to the top or bottom of the current page instead of the top or bottom
of the document as in other applications. To move to the beginning or
end of the book, you can use the Go to Location dialog box which is
accessed using the Kindle command CTRL+G.

Re: [JAWS-Users] kindle for pc

2017-06-20 Thread Adrian Spratt
Jim,

I think we need to be careful when talking about Kindle for PC accessibility.
There are any number of operations that can't be done with Kindle texts, such
as finding page numbers, copying text, and so on. I believe these limits mostly
reflect the limits of the Kindle for all users. I'll add that the way to move
from function to function is linear. For example, as I recall, to find the
"search" function, I have to tab through all the preceding functions to get
there. (I haven't read a Kindle book in two months, and already my memory is
hazy.)

For me, it's not an ideal way of managing texts, but Kindle does provide access
to any number of books visually impaired people can't get in any other way.

Kindle for PC does read out of the box with JAWS. To find the download page,
search on Google. But note the misspelling in the subject line. It's
"Kindle," with an "i."
These search terms will get you there, using a colon after the website name
to tell google it is a website:

Hi Justin and list,

Once you install the kindle PC app, you'll need to get the accessible plug
in. I can get you a link as i have it. After that, you can hit F1 and get
commands to read. It doesn't read out of the box, at least it didn't with
Window-Eyes. Let me know how I can help. You can also search amazon for

Kate,

I pulled up JAWS to try this and it does work the same.

I highlighted the column I would have wanted alphabetized by holding down
the shift key and arrowing down.

Then I pulled up the context menu by pressing the key just to the left of
the righthand CTRL key. Sorry, if it's got an actual name, I don't know it
offhand. But to the right of the spacebar there are four keys and it's the
third in from the spacebar or, as I said, just to the left of the CTRL key
which is at the far right.

Hope that didn't totally confuse you. :)

Nancy

[JAWS-Users] turning off keyboard labels

2017-06-20 Thread net bat66

thanks to chris on the gw-info talk list
there is a work around for stopping jaws from speaking the control, shift, alt,
etc in the keyboard labeler.
these keys say they can not be muted. but if you tab to change label and delete
the title and leave them blank this will stop them from speaking when you press
them.

Rick, here's the thread that prompted my question. As far as I can tell, I
complied with the list's requirements. I never got a reply to the most recent
post in that thread. If you read through the entire exchange, you'll see I
included the forwarded message in my message field.

Richard, for the record, I wasn't cross-posting in the sense we normally mean,
that is, posting the same query to several lists at once. I was copying an item
from another source that I hoped would contribute to the thread, as I might
give a link to an article. That source happened to be a message posted on
another list three years ago. Like others here, I'm trying to get to the bottom
of why John's JAWS scripts for Spotify aren't available at the link we used to
have. The last location anyone has found goes back to 2014. So, are these
scripts still viable? Chris H had a perspective that I hoped would help.

That said, I'll assume from now on that copying a message from another list is
deemed cross-posting and I'll avoid doing it in the future.

no you can't, after playing with the latest stable release briefly I was far

sure don't regret subscribing either. Also cancelled my Spotify

Usually when something that visually looks like a bullet in the middle of a
line, it is some type of special character or graphic. Word will not let
you insert a bullet in the middle of a line without a serious fight.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Bullets in MS Word 2013

HTH,

Annette

One more cross-posting issue to consider.

A month or two ago, I posted a response to someone's query with a message
containing a copy of the relevant part of a message posted on another list.
A moderator rebuked me for cross-posting. When I posted an explanation of
what I'd done, none of the moderators replied.

I don't like claiming credit for a solution that someone else figured out,
and so that rebuke has put me in a bind whenever information I have comes

don't post.

Clarification would be appreciated.

It has crossed my desk that I might need to revise the list guidelines after
a few discrepancies have occurred.

Posting to a single address IE this list is the preferred acceptable
practice as we do not allow cross posting. That is simply posting to more
than one list or address in the same message. You can post the same message
to multiple list, but not at the same time.

Now to the matter of replying to a posted message:

The proper practice is to simply hit the reply command in your respective
email client, IE control + R is used quite often in many programs. Replying
to all, for example control + shift + R in Windows Live Mail will only serve
to get your message flagged by the server for having too many recipients.

Then at that point your message gets held for one of us to accept or discard
depending on the reason for it being held. In this case it will get
rejected.

This means that you are trying to post to the list and another address at
the same time which goes against the list rules.

I will of course make the change in the posted guidelines and Rick will send
them out July the first as he always does.

Hi Adrian,
I don't remember the particular instance you are referring to,
it may have been a forwarded message, which are not permitted on this list.
We don't have any problems with someone passing along information retrieved

that info should be included in the poster's message.
Please refer to the list guidelines on forwarded messages and articles.

[JAWS-Users] Labeling buttons found when using the touch cursor

2017-06-20 Thread miketmote73
Good morning all! I am a brand new member to this list, and I have a
question regarding the use of the touch cursor.

On a web-site that I use, I am encountering buttons that do not have labels.
When I activate them using the touch cursor, they perform certain functions
consistently, such as activating the save file option. I am then presented
with the standard save as dialog box. My question is this. Can I assign a
label to this button? It is not found by either the JAWS or PC cursor.
When pressing Insert plus F2, I am not seeing the option to label a button.
Any help would be appreciated. Glad to be part of this list!

It has crossed my desk that I might need to revise the list guidelines after a
few discrepancies have occurred.

Posting to a single address IE this list is the preferred acceptable practice
as we do not allow cross posting. That is simply posting to more than one list
or address in the same message. You can post the same message to multiple list,
but not at the same time.

Now to the matter of replying to a posted message:

The proper practice is to simply hit the reply command in your respective email
client, IE control + R is used quite often in many programs. Replying to all,
for example control + shift + R in Windows Live Mail will only serve to get
your message flagged by the server for having too many recipients.

Then at that point your message gets held for one of us to accept or discard
depending on the reason for it being held. In this case it will get rejected.

This means that you are trying to post to the list and another address at the
same time which goes against the list rules.

I will of course make the change in the posted guidelines and Rick will send
them out July the first as he always does.

One more cross-posting issue to consider.

A month or two ago, I posted a response to someone's query with a message
containing a copy of the relevant part of a message posted on another list.
A moderator rebuked me for cross-posting. When I posted an explanation of
what I'd done, none of the moderators replied.

I don't like claiming credit for a solution that someone else figured out,
and so that rebuke has put me in a bind whenever information I have comes
from another list. Either I post a solution and give no credit, or I just
don't post.

Clarification would be appreciated.

It doesn't always get to the desktop, and likely due to other applications

Kate,
To add to Nancy's response; you can select the column that you want by
holding down the control and pressing the space bar. Also, some keyboards
don't have the context menu, A K A, the applications key. If yours does not;
use the shift f10, it is the same thing.

Hi al, a quick way to add bullets are if you hit shift 8. This give you a star
which turns into a bullet once you hit space. I know this happens to me
everytime I try and put a star in a document.
