Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws still disappearing

2017-07-17 Thread Vicky Vaughan
Hi Miriam, Yes, I have the same problem with Jaws going silent for no known
reason. I am using Jaws 16 on a 64 byt Win7 computer. It doesn't seem to
make any difference as to how long it has been since the last reboot or full
shut-down.

I wish I had something helpful to offer, but, like you, shutting down has
been the only way I've been able to get Jaws back.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone in this!

Sincerely, Vicky

Even after this latest update, Jaws occasionally and unexpectedly goes
silent when I change from one window to another. Jaws 18, Windows 7 . Office
365, 64 bit computer. None of the key strokes that have been suggested,
appear to work. I go to the desktop and wait. Nothing happens. If I press
the power button lightly, just before the computer turns off, Jaws starts
to talk. But I can't, at that point, stop the computer from turning off. It
just happened to me again. Very frustrating! Is this happening to anyone
else? What do you do when it happens?

I've tried it. It's my understanding that if I then repeat it, Jaws will come
back. It doesn't. I think I've tried my hot keys for Jaws after doing it, but
that doesn't work either.

Short of rebooting the system, applying the hot key sequence I have assigned to

2017-07-17 Thread Rick Ely
Jim,
What a great step by step. I have a folder with your lessons. It is so good
to see someone with a clear understanding of Windows. When, in the long ago
and far away, and teaching WindowEyes I told my students that so much of
good use of a screen reader relied on knowing what was possible in the
operating system and having a good group of shortcut keys in your OS between
your ears. I was a GW guy back in the VocalEyes days and then a WE user and
teacher. When WE went away, I dreaded the switch. All that dread has mostly
vanished. Now if I can retrain my head to press the specific JAWS function
keys. I will be in good shape. Motor memory is a wonderful thing until the
task has its key combo altered.

Thanks from lots of us,
Rick

Because, depending on the order of the pinned items to the Taskbar, this
will determine the shortcut key that will start that program on your

*For example:
on my computer pressing the windows key followed by a number on the numbers

Pressing Windows key+1, will open Internet Explorer.

After pressing Windows key, and pressing the down arrow, and pressing the

For using the Windows burning functionality, which is the simplest, you
first have to paste the files and folder you want to burn into the disk into
the folder of your CD burner drive, either by copying and pasting or by
using the Send To sub menu.
When you have placed the files you want to burn, open the drive's folder
and, in the context menu when there are no selected items, or in the File
menu/tab, choose the Burn these Files to CD option.
When you choose this option, follow the prompts of the wizard. When you're
asked to select the file system, choose Mastered if you don't intend to
continue recording files to the disk as a flash drive, and to use it in any
device, even non-Windows ones. If you want to use the disk as a flash drive
until it is full (you will not be able to delete or modify files unless it
is an re-writable disk), choose the Live file system instead.
Regarding the label, this is the text that will be disdisplayed before or
after the drive letter (the order depends on the Windows version).

For burning operations just consisting on files copying, burning
functionality built into Windows Explorer is accessible and enough; since
Windows 7 you can also burn ISO images to actual media.
When I need some additional features I use UltraISO. Many years ago always
installed Nero, but unless you need very advanced settings, nowadays there
are individual programs, even open source, which avoid downloading all the
Nero suite which include a lot of unnecessary components you have to
carefully unselect to prevent file associations of common multimedia formats
from being changed, especially on Windows earlier than 10.

Hello Judy,

You can close the Downloads window by using CTRL W. Focus should return to
where it was before you opened Downloads. You can also hold down CTRL and
use tab key to move between open tabs. Using CTRL with numbers on the
number row will open specific tabs. If Downloads opened as the second tab
then using CTRL with 1 will go to the page you were viewing before opening
Downloads.

Take care.

If all else fails, and if you aren't comfortable trying the more complicated
suggestions that have been offered here, you might want to call Freedom
Scientific about the issue.

I believe they are aware of the problem, and the more people they hear from
who have experienced the issue, the better that will be, in my opinion.

For reasons that I don't quite understand, I have not experienced this
problem very much any more, after updating to the latest build of Jaws 18,
and after renewing my Office 365 subscription.

This doesn't mean that I won't experience the problem again, though, so I'm
knocking on wood here as I write this.

I also had this Jaws crashing problem several months ago with this Windows 7
laptop, but fortunately, have not experienced it very often lately since I
did the latest Jaws update.

Here are some instructions for a procedure that often worked to get Jaws up
and running again without having to do a hard shutdown of the computer:

If Jaws crashes afgter exiting out of a program, Press the JAWS or numpad
insert key+Windows-key+F4. This closes JAWS completely. This is much more
effective than JAWS key+F4 without the Windows key. Note that when you do
this, you likely will have to re-start Jaws again.

When I used to do this, I often got an error report message from Freedom
Scientific, which I always tried to respond to by submitting the report.

Let us know if this helps.

I know how incredibly frustrating this problem is, especially if you are in

Hi, Mitch and Miriam.

I can't say I'm plagued by this problem, but periodically JAWS does give up
the ghost. The keystroke that works almost every time is JAWS key+Windows
key+F4. It completely unloads JAWS and then restores it. Sometimes I have to
wait several seconds, but JAWS almost always comes back. Have either of you

I have JAWS 18 now, and it doesn't crash very much. On my old system though,
runnig XP and jAWS 12 or so, this was a very regular occurrence. Rather than
rebooting the system, which was sometimes necessary but definitely a last
resort, my preference was to look for the JAWS process in task manager and kill
it. Sometimes when JAWS stops speaking, it doesn't mean the process has
unexpectedly terminated -- it's still sitting there malfunctioning, so your
hotkey to restart will not work, since the programme is in fact running. In
those cases you have to kill it manually, then use the hotkey.

and very often when opening Winamp in Windows 10 64-bit.
Usually the keystroke WINDOWS+INSERT+F4 that Tom suggested works. For those
occasions when this doesn't work and it is difficult to kill JAWS processes
from Task Manager because JAWS still is controlling the keyboard and
intercepting scripts assigned to the ENTER and ARROW keys in Default.jss, I
made a .cmd (you can also use extension .bat) file that, especially when run as
administrator to act upon Local System account's JAWS-related processes too,
forces killing of all instances of jfw.exe and all processes starting with FS,
which are helper processes for features like Convenient OCR, switching JAWS
control between user and secure desktops and, in 64-bit systems, the Eloquence
Synthesizer which is not integrated into the Application File for JAWS
(jfw.exe) process. Once these processes were killed, this file automatically
restarts JAWS as if you use the Run dialog.
To quickly access this file, I created it a desktop shortcut and assigned an
hotkey to this shortcut.

Re: [JAWS-Users] burnning a CD with jaws

2017-07-17 Thread Fernando Gregoire
For burning operations just consisting on files copying, burning functionality
built into Windows Explorer is accessible and enough; since Windows 7 you can
also burn ISO images to actual media.
When I need some additional features I use UltraISO. Many years ago always
installed Nero, but unless you need very advanced settings, nowadays there are
individual programs, even open source, which avoid downloading all the Nero
suite which include a lot of unnecessary components you have to carefully
unselect to prevent file associations of common multimedia formats from being
changed, especially on Windows earlier than 10.

Hello Judy,

You can close the Downloads window by using CTRL W. Focus should return to
where it was before you opened Downloads. You can also hold down CTRL and
use tab key to move between open tabs. Using CTRL with numbers on the
number row will open specific tabs. If Downloads opened as the second tab
then using CTRL with 1 will go to the page you were viewing before opening
Downloads.

Take care.

I can't say I'm plagued by this problem, but periodically JAWS does give up the

Miriam:

I know how incredibly frustrating this problem is, especially if you are in
the middle of a number of tasks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws still disappearing

2017-07-17 Thread JM Casey

I have only done the shared calendar in 2010, and I found the best view to
work in is the week view. It wasn't perfectly easy to use, though, the Jaws
would bounce around all over the place, but I did manage it. For personal
use, I use the calendar on my note taker, but if colleagues need to see your
calendar, it is easy enough to post events in yours. Just make sure you are
in the shared calendars folder and not the archive folder.

silent when I change from one window to another.

Miriam

As far as I know, multiple formats are available for download.
E.G. pdf, mobi, epub.
Remember that not all formats are available for all the books, see for yourself.

Hi All,

Has anyone got any tips for working within shared calendars in Outlook 2016?
For instance, if you are comparing things like available dates and the like
between yourself and another persons shared calendar, whats a quick way of
moving between both calendars?.
Hope I have this right.

Many thanks,

Paul.

You don't have to be crazy to run a list like this, but it does help.
