Re: [JAWS-Users] word docx to notepad txt
Hi Kevin, This is how I would do it using Word 2010, so Try the following: 1. With the .DOCX file open press, Alt + F, then press the letter, A, to open the, Save As, dialogue. Note: If you want to change the name of the file, after invoking the above keystrokes you're in an edit field, so you can change the name of the file here. 2. Tab 1 time to the Save As Type combobox, navigate to, Plain Text.txt, by arrowing or 1st letter navigation. 3. Press enter on, Plain Text.txt, tab through some other options to the, Okay, button & press enter. Note: After you've highlighted the Plain Text option instead of pressing enter you can tab through some other options to the,Save, button if you would like to explore the other options in this dialogue, then after selecting the, Save button, then tab to the, Okay button, & press enter. Take care. Mike. Dodgers, try again next year! Sent from my iBarstool. Arguing with a woman is like reading a software license agreement. [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018, Firefox, and returning an audible book
This message is directed at those folks who are using jaws 2018 with Firefox and are audible subscribers. Audible offers the ability to return a book if you don’t like it. When you are on the screen that is listing your audible orders, and you press enter on a “return“ link associated with a given book, there is a window that comes up within the window or, according to my sighted husband, it’s sort of behind the window where the focus was. You can get to it with a mouse, which is what he did. But I’m wondering if there is a way to put focus on this window, which allows you to complete the return process. Ideally, when you press enter on the “return“ link, jaws would focus on this new window where you need to take action to complete the process. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Schwab
Thanks, George. In fact, Schwab has entered into what's called a "structured settlement" concerning accessibility, and it has people specifically assigned to handle website accessibility. However, I think they really fell short in the planning of this completely revised website. For example, information that used to be presented compactly but in different areas is now combined into single huge tables, but the tables aren't formatted to be read easily by screenreaders, at any rate, JAWS. You don't get column headings or row names. Also, there's now a complicated navigation structure that I'll need to organize with the help of placemarkers. The problem today was that this structure isn't intuitive to a screenreader user, and so it took me ages to get anything like a feel for how it works, and I'm still wasting time re-analyzing it. Other time-wasting annoyances are that the main content on a page is given a heading at level 4, which means you need to press h over and over before JAWS recognizes that level. I tried r for "region," but it has the same problem that you need to press it several times and a separate problem in that you don't know when you've landed in the region you want. The day began with my computer crashing several times when I tried to get past Schwab's log-in screen with IE11. I finally resorted to Google Chrome. Firefox had other problems, but in that case I have to suspect my JAWS quick settings. For example, I discovered that by having turned off "inline frames" in order to navigate the NY Times, I'd prevented JAWS from recognizing edit fields on the Schwab site. I fixed that, but I'm still having problems with Firefox and Schwab. I'll be curious to hear about your experience with it. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of George Martinez Sr Sent: Wednesday, November 22, 2017 4:30 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Schwab I have a small Schwab account but go there rarely. Re: [JAWS-Users] adding an address from within a message using outlook 2016
James, I would join George and add one suggestion. If you have access to Bookshare, there are many books about Microsoft products for users. I did a quick search, and though there are none specifically for Office 16 products, there are a number for version 13 including ones that cover Outlook. There are always some changes in newer version, but think books on the previous iteration would provide a good starting point. Good luck and don't give up, Rick -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of George Martinez Sr Sent: Wednesday, November 22, 2017 2:52 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] adding an address from within a message using outlook 2016 James, Not at all sure how this Subject and question got on top of the below emails but... This is what I did. This is a bit detailed, so delete as you please. Smile. I'm using Windows 10 1709 Creator update, Jaws 2018 and Word 2010. I have several image files saved so was able to test using these formats" PDF and JPG. Rather than first opening the PDF file, waiting for the "alert, empty document," message, and then scanning with the layered keystrokes, insert-spacebar, o, then d, with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu key, also known as the application key, and arrowed down to Recognize with JAWS. I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said Started. The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or control a, to select all, and control c to copy. I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual. I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word, notepad would be no different. As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned in Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different. All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to Recognize with JAWS. I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting to be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy, smile, and kept giving me information about non-uniform tables, row and column information. Rather than playing with my table settings in the JAWS quick settings menu, I figured notepad might be a better option in this case. When I pasted the same copied results into notepad, the file read as it had when scanned by JAWS. At this point, just because I prefer saving in Word, I reselected the information in notepad, copied it, and pasted it into Word. Word was no longer cross, muttering about tables, so all was well. For those who have made it to the end, HTH. Smile. Rebecca A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it isn't open. Re: [JAWS-Users] Anyone on here using J dictate or J say?
Hello Mary: J-Say is a British program that has been around for years, a wrap-around Dragon Natural Speaking, designed for people with limited or no hand mobility. I had to learn it years ago in order to teach a younger blind person with Multiple Sclerosis and was surprised how well it works. You can indeed give commands to the computer or dictate to it, it accommodates different accents, even understood perfectly my Cuban-accented English. Having said that, I still would not use it unless you have trouble typing; it requires patience and with the advent of Cortana and the rapid updates to all that new Windows technology, I would go that route instead. As far as J-Dictate, I have no idea, never used it. I’m guessing this question might be seen as a bit too general to be of interest to the list. So please feel free to reply privately if you want. I don’t want to clog the list with stuff folks don’t care about. I am curious about the J dictate and J say. I read the blurb on Brian‘s website. I certainly don’t need to control my entire computer via voice. But there are aspects of it that sound like they could be rather useful. I mean, if you can really use natural language to do all sorts of stuff, finding things changing settings etc., without having to memorize all the stuff that goes with that in terms of keyboarding and what keystroke does work, it could be kind of nice. Anyway, please do feel free to reply off list at the address I will put right here. I guess I’m looking for Star Trek. Smile.
