Hi Miriam,
I am really jammed right now until the end of the month or I would research
this out for you. I will save your email and at end of next week if it is
still an issue I will see if I can resolve it for you.
Meanwhile, 1.) how did you get that "To Miriam" folder and 2.) are all of
your new emails going there instead of into your Inbox?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Permanent placemarkers

2018-04-21 Thread Adrian Spratt
Yes, it would defeat the object if you set a placemarker and kept text that is
certain to change.

From this exchange, I hope other listers will have found a few ways to make
their placemarkers more reliable. When they were introduced many years ago, I
thought they were one of those new FS features that didn't do much to merit the
SMA update fee, but they've turned out to be a crucial part of Web navigation
for me.

Hi Adrian,

Yes, Spanish JAWS versions fill this edit box automatically too, but I usually
change this automatic text a bit, especially by making deletions.
As an example, in a website in which articles aren't marked with headings nor
regions, I added a placemarker into the line it tells the estimated reading
time.
When I first added this placemarker, the automatically generated text included
the specific time of the article I opened at that time, for example: “Estimated
reading time: 6 minutes”.
To make the placemarker helpful for all articles, in addition to checking the
box to apply this placemarker for all pages in the current domain, in the
automatically generated text I removed everything after the colon.

You surely also keep this in mind when creating a placemarker, but I never
needed to mark a place in which there is a link to make the placemarker to be
reliable. The only case in which I had bad experiences was visiting a
previously placemarked page but using a different web browser than the one used
when I created the placemarkers. I suppose this is somewhat related to the
Responsive Web Design about which Freedom Scientific posted on their blog at
the end of 2017, but I had problems even on very standard HTMLs.

Hope it helps!

Yes, Fernando, and I usually check that box. To add to what you write here,
when you check the "anchor to text" box, a new tab field appears with the text
JAWS detects at that location. This is the edit field you refer to, but (as I'm
sure you know) it isn't blank. You have a choice of keeping that text or, as
you suggest, typing in something different. However, I can't quite see why one
would write something different. Regardless, this "anchor to text" option in
the dialog can help in maintaining the placemarker but, in my experience, it is
no guarantee. Even if the Website designer keeps the same text there, I've
found that a text-associated placemarker isn't necessarily reliable unless it
is also associated with a link.

It sounds as though your experience might be different. I wonder, for example,
if the Spanish version of JAWS doesn't fill in the edit field.

I should mention that I haven't read anywhere about this link relationship.
It's just something I noticed over time.

Hi Adrian,

Have you looked at the Associate with Text checkbox? When adding a placemarker
this checkbox is unchecked by default, so you mark a line in the virtual
representation instead of a specific text, therefore any small change on the
page causes the link or whatever unit you have marked to be misslocated.
If you know a string of text that the part you want to mark always have
regardless of changes, you can check this checkbox, tab once and enter the
corresponding part of text. By the way, you will always reach the same element
as long as the string of text you have associated to the placemarker is
present, no matter of the line number.

Hope it helps!

Earlier this week, Justin commented that placemarkers don't always hold their
place, which is true. However, I've found that they are dependable when I put
them on a link. Sometimes it means putting it a line or two away from a logical
spot, but I think they've been stable every time I do this.
As a reminder, the dialog to set a permanent placemarker is begun with
control-shift-k. Tab from there.

tech support and ask them to help with your receiving multiple copies of
emails.
Also, do you know the difference between your email being set up as iMap or
POP3? By default Outlook likes to set up nowadays as iMap and if you do not
have your email on a cell phone you should be using POP3. Ask your email
provider about that as well. Also ask them to help you set your Outlook to
delete messages off their server once downloaded.

can't address emails unless I have the email address stored in a word
document which I've kept with some addresses or if I can steal an address

Miriam, no, the problem isn't with JAWS 18, at least none of the ones you
identify. I'm also using Outlook 2016, along with Windows 7.
I have bad experiences with Microsoft Disability support, unless the problem
turns out to be really simple, in which case I don't need them! I'll only
call them as a last resort, and even then I've had to find someone else to

I'm wondering if there is a problem with Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016 because
the Microsoft disabilities tech person thought that this might be causing my
difficulty. Outlook stopped functioning. When I called, the first person set
up a new profile in Outlook, whatever that is. But then the problem
actdually persisted. Outlook would open, begin to work, and then stop
functioning. I called again. The second tech person replaced all of office
365, promising that all the settings would remain the same. They didn't. But
the other problem is that everything worked except the, "to Miriam", folder
to which all my important emails go. That one continues to close. I asked
him to remove that folder for me and set things up so that everything goes
to the inbox, but he refused. Also, I can't address emails. Auto complete
doesn't work properly and unrelated email addresses appear, even if I just
try to write in an address. I managed to get to the address book one time,
but couldn't use it to address an email. I'm sending this because I can
read emails from my inbox and use one of the email addresses from that.
Microsoft is having someone from a higher level call back on Monday. Before
that happens, I want to know if anyone who is still using Jaws 18 and is
using Outlook 2016 has had a similar problem.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Permanent placemarkers

2018-04-21 Thread Fernando Gregoire

Hi Miriam,
I am using Windows 10, Office 365 and JAWS18.
I had a somewhat similar issue but it was caused by the fact that I had a
new computer and ended up on Dell's 90day free trial of Office Suite. It
was terrible until I discovered that my Office 365 was not installed. Once
we got that fixed things are working "normal" in my Outlook 2016.
BTW-When I called Microsoft Accessibility line the tech solved HALF of my
problem but not the rest. That is not altogether uncommon there. Then I
called COX, my ISP provider where I pay for tech help, and that guy though
willing solved nothing. Finally my son and I figured out the remaining
issues and now all is well.

Hi Mike,

Based on what I have figured out, the black on black announcement from JAWS
is not accurate. Visually it is black on white. I have not played with
actual font colors and backgrounds to see how JAWS reports seeing the
colors, but I have found that using the "highlighter" JAWS accurately
reports the highlight color and the text as being black. I wasted a lot of
time trying to figure this out and got nowhere. I finally snagged a
co-worker who was walking by my office and borrowed their eyes. They
reported that everything looked fine on the screen as well as when I printed
it out. I've not checked any of this out in Excel.

Hi Mike,

Based on what I have figured out, the black on black announcement from JAWS is
not accurate. Visually it is black on white. I have not played with actual
font colors and backgrounds to see how JAWS reports seeing the colors, but I
have found that using the "highlighter" JAWS accurately reports the highlight
color and the text as being black. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure
this out and got nowhere. I finally snagged a co-worker who was walking by my
office and borrowed their eyes. They reported that everything looked fine on
the screen as well as when I printed it out. I've not checked any of this out
in Excel.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws & Word 2016

2018-04-21 Thread Sharon S
Hi, sorry coming in late on this but slowly catching up on a huge pile of
emails. I too have had this problem with allot of my documents. I looked
into the font setting and all looked fine so I got a sighted family member
to look at one of my documents and all was fine. I have bought this up with
someone from VFO and was told it was going to be fixed in the next update
but that was months ago and so far no fix. I am using Jaws 18 on this
machine but haven't checked the same documents on the machine running Jawx
2018. At first I thought it was something funny with my machine until I
mentioned it to this VFO person and I am now glad to see there are others
reporting the same thing.

Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016

2018-04-21 Thread Adrian Spratt
Miriam, no, the problem isn't with JAWS 18, at least none of the ones you
identify. I'm also using Outlook 2016, along with Windows 7.
I have bad experiences with Microsoft Disability support, unless the problem
turns out to be really simple, in which case I don't need them! I'll only call
them as a last resort, and even then I've had to find someone else to fix the
damage they do.

I'm wondering if there is a problem with Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016 because the
Microsoft disabilities tech person thought that this might be causing my
difficulty. Outlook stopped functioning. When I called, the first person set up
a new profile in Outlook, whatever that is. But then the problem actdually
persisted. Outlook would open, begin to work, and then stop functioning. I
called again. The second tech person replaced all of office 365, promising that
all the settings would remain the same. They didn't. But the other problem is
that everything worked except the, "to Miriam", folder to which all my
important emails go. That one continues to close. I asked him to remove that
folder for me and set things up so that everything goes to the inbox, but he
refused. Also, I can't address emails. Auto complete doesn't work properly and
unrelated email addresses appear, even if I just try to write in an address. I
managed to get to the address book one time, but couldn't use it to address an
email. I'm sending this because I can read emails from my inbox and use one of
the email addresses from that.
Microsoft is having someone from a higher level call back on Monday. Before
that happens, I want to know if anyone who is still using Jaws 18 and is
using Outlook 2016 has had a similar problem.

Miriam

another card. I purchased 2 unnamed cards for $13 each from a local computer

they are not designed for computer speakers. I just ordered a $30 card from
Tiger Direct for $30. It has a 2 year warranty. Their shipping is very
reasonable about $3.00. I use this card exclusively for jaws. That way I can
turn the sound off until I need it for web pages.
