[JAWS-Users] Is there an easier way to navigate the JAWS Users List digest

2017-06-21 Thread Scott Delventhal
I receive the JAWS Users List in digest format. Is there an easier way to
navigate the long list of messages other than by the arrow keys? What about
by headings, sub headings, etc.

Thanks, Scott

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and 8.1 upgrade

2015-03-03 Thread Scott Duck
I lost speech during the upgrade process and my wife had to complete it.
However, when the computer rebooted afterward, JAWS worked just fine. I had
a lot of other problems after the 8.1 upgrade though but I won't go into
that as you didn't ask about that. I may go back to 8 myself.

When upgrading from 8-to-8.1 did any of you have speech after the upgrade

It's been a long while since I've done this, so do not remember, thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Uninstalling Jaws

2015-02-26 Thread Scott Duck
Hey Trish,

Just do what I do. Never uninstall a JAWS version. Each one only takes a
couple hundred megs and this laptop has a 750 gig hard drive so it's not
like I'm hurting for space. I suspect that most JAWS users also have plenty
of space on their machines. Leaving all JAWS versions doesn't hurt anything
but removing them might so I just leave them just to be safe. I know,
removing previous versions shouldn't hurt anything but I've seen plenty of
times when things that shouldn't hurt anything in fact do.

Thanks,

well then, sounds like you can't uninstall anything since it's all dependent
of each version. I have still only removed the talking installer for J12,

Trish,

But if you have more than one copy of JAWS on the laptop
they all share the same shared files. So, if you remove an
older version of JAWS and remove shared components my guess
is you will have trouble with version 15 and/or 16.

I'll tell you how temperamental this process can be.
Yesterday I uninstalled JAWS 14 leaving shared components in
place. Following that I removed the talking installer for
version 14. I then rebooted and JAWS 16 came up as expected.
I then had some work to do in MS Office 2010. I use virtual
ribbon option and as soon as I hit the alt key to get to the
ribbons, no speech. This was true in all Office programs.
So, I tried JAWS 15, same thing. I turned virtual ribbon
option off and ribbons worked fine. Turned it back on and no
go. Fortunately Win 7 automatically creates a restore point
prior to any install or uninstall. So, I restored to point
before uninstalling JAWS 14 and all is well. So, there you
have a problem even when keeping shared components. Just
thought I'd share

Best,
Al

Honestly, I keep usually two versions on a computer, the latest and the
version before that, it really is not rocket science to do the uninstall. I
had four versions on one computer because I kept forgetting, then one day I
took all but the current one off, maybe it does not take much disk space,
however, if I am not using it why keep it hanging around.

[JAWS-Users] Installation Problems With JAWS 16

2015-02-05 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,

I currently have a JAWS 15 license. I ran the JAWS 16 beta with no problems
and I plan to upgrade to JAWS 16 when money allows. In the meantime, I plan
to just run JAWS 16 in 40 minute demo mode, when I want to use the PDF whole
document OCR feature. I uninstalled the JAWS 16 beta and installed the
latest regular version of JAWS 16. The install went normally but JAWS 16
will not speak. There is no error message. It just won't talk. I
uninstalled it and reinstalled it with the same result. I installed the 64
bit version, which is correct for my system. Has anybody had this problem?
JAWS 15 still works fine.

Thanks,

Scott Duck

Annette,

I can tell you that the problem regarding not being able to read the
contents of a Excel 2010 cell when in edit mode also exists in JAWS 16. I
have had that problem for years, even back to JAWS 8 or 9 and Excel 2003

appear to be interested in fixing it.

Are there any known issues with using JAWS14 with Windows 8.1?
Unfortunately, JAWS16 has not been approved in my work environment and I've
got some JAWS users who have been moved over to Windows8.1 and are
experiencing problems. None of them are experiencing the same problems. FS
has been contacted in each situation and has told the user and the IT rep
that there is no way to resolve the problem other than moving to JAWS16. IT
is convinced that because no 2 users are experiencing the exact same
problem, that the issues can be resolved and there is no need for JAWS16.

Some problems that have been experienced are:

. Inability to use Alt plus a number key to read header info in an
open Outlook2010 e-mail message

. Unable to navigate the Outlook2010 calendar

. Unable to read the contents of an Excel2010 cell after using the
F2 to enter into Edit mode of that cell

. Many problems with using spell checker in MS-Word2010.

Are there any known problems like the ones listed above that can be
attributed to the use of JAWS14 that can only be resolved by moving to
JAWS16? Are there any other issues not listed here that can only be
resolved by moving to JAWS16?

Thanks,

Annette

[JAWS-Users] HD Checking Software

Hi,

Can anyone recommend any good hard drive checking software that works well
with JAWS? A while ago, I had some files disappear and then reappear about

Hi,
I have had this issue for years with Excel 2003 and 2010, running various
versions of JAWS on different systems running XP, Vista, Win 7, and Win 8.
I have found no work around that is consistently reliable. Sometimes
unloading and reloading JAWS will help temporarily. One solution is to copy
the formula into notepad, edit it there, and copy it back to the cell. I
have reported to FS. They say that it is a known issue but no word as to
when it might be fixed. I would say that they are in no hurry as I have
encountered this problem at least back to JAWS 8 or 9.

Hi,

In my case, it eventually got tired of me clicking remind me later and it
went ahead and downloaded it and installed it. One day, I was working in a
Word document and, all of a sudden, JAWS said please wait while your
computer is upgraded to Windows 8.1 or something to that effect.
Thankfully, my wife was around and she completed the upgrade process for me
because, as has been said, it is not accessible. I know that many people
like 8.1 but, personally, I find my computer, which came with Windows 8, to
be less stable after the upgrade to 8.1. I wish it had given me a choice

Hi Anna,

Unless Microsoft has changed the upgrade process since Windows 8.1 was first
released, I found the upgrade to be impossible. The upgrade evidently uses
the Microsoft Store metro app, which is inaccessible, and once I clicked on
Get It Now, that's as far as I got. From this point on, JAWS will read
nothing, and there is no way of knowing where you are at. I resorted to the
Microsoft Accessiblity Support Group to help me get it installed. I also
always had trouble with it after the upgrade, and ended up buying a new
laptop with 8.1 installed on it, I have liked it since then, no problems. My
old computer, I reverted it back to Windows 7. This is just my experience,
but I do know many people had trouble getting the update.

[JAWS-Users] Dropping Wifi Connection

2014-11-20 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,

After updating my HP Envy from Windows 8 to 8.1, my wifi connection
frequently drops when I put the computer to sleep or shut it down. When
this happens, I just reestablish the connection and everything works fine.
This happens probably about half the time. Is there a way to keep the
connection from dropping? I very seldom had this problem before updating.

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Missing Files

2014-11-14 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Everyone,

I have a little mystery here. I hope the list can help me to solve it.

I have a HP Envy, running Windows 8.1 and JAWS 16.

I just had about 50 or so files to just up and disappear. The actual
disappearance isn't a big deal. All of the files were MP3s, ripped from CD.
I back up regularly and I just restored them from the latest backup.
However, it worries me that they disappeared in the first place. As far as
I can tell, the files were not hidden, they were just gone. Norton gives me
a clean bill of health and, anyway, I wouldn't think that a virus would mess
with only 50 user files out of 50,000. All of these particular files were
ripped on the same day, about six months ago. As they were all ripped back
to back and my HD has very low fragmentation, I assume that they were stored
roughly sequentially on the HD. This has me wondering if I have a HD sector
going bad, although the Windows disk checking tool shows that the HD is OK.

I did update to Windows 8.1 a couple weeks ago but I wouldn't think that the
update would have anything to do with this.

Seems to me that the most likely explanation is a HD starting to go south.
I've been planning on switching to a SSD anyway but didn't want to spend the
money just yet.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem may be or how I can
investigate further?

Thanks,

Scott Duck

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS16 fails to read MS Word documents and Excel cell entries while JAWS 15 does

2014-11-13 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,
Not sure about the difficulty that you are experiencing in Word. However,
in Excel, when using F2 to edit the cell's contents, I have often had
trouble with JAWS not reading text that the cursor passes over. I have had
problems with this for years, going back several JAWS versions and going
back to Excel 2003 (I am currently using Excel 2010). I have reported it to
FS. They say that it is a known issue but they haven't fixed it yet.

Hello gang.
I've both the latest JFW15 and JFW16 on my Win8 64bit PC. I consistently
notice that JFW 16 fails to read content in my MS Word documents while JFW15
consistently and reliably is able to read them. Ditto behavior when trying
to read entries in an MS excel sheet cell by hitting F2 to read the entry.
These are the same documents in Word and Excel that I've observed the diff
in behavior between JFW15 and 16.

What's going on and do you have a solution to offer?

[JAWS-Users] Updating to Windows 8.1

2014-10-14 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Everyone,

I am running the JAWS 16 beta with Windows 8. I have not yet updated to
Windows 8.1. I have nothing against Windows 8.1 but I'm doing fine with
Windows 8 and just haven seen the point. You know, if it isn't broke, don't
fix it. My computer has been occasionally asking me if I want to update but
now it has apparently gone ahead and downloaded the update but just hasn't
installed it because, every time I boot up the computer now, it asks me if I
want to update to 8.1 and restart. I can't close the window but I've been
just leaving it in the background for the last couple days. I'm thinking
about going ahead and updating just so the computer will leave me alone
about it. Is there any disadvantage to updating? Is anybody having any
significant problems with JAWS and Windows 8.1?

Thanks,

Scott Duck

times in the last couple days, speech has stopped and a JAWS dump and reload
did not work. I also couldn't start Narrator or WindowEyes. I ended up
just turning the computer off and back on. When it did this just a few
minutes ago, before I turned the computer off, I got my daughter, who is

keyboard input had no effect. Does anyone have any ideas about what may be

258 kbps. And at http://testmy.net/upload my download speed measured an
impressive 8.7 mbps. What's going on with all these speed tests? I realize
that each speed test uses its own propriatary method of testing Internest
speeds, but why is there such a huge disparity among the results? Is it
possible that none of these speed tests is accurate, and that all such speed
tests are bogus? According to Verizon, my current DSL download speed is
supposed to be between 768kbps and 1mbps, which will supposedly be upgraded
to 3.1 mbps to 7.8 mbps next Tuesday. The result from the IPhone speed test

I think you are saying that the workbook has multiple worksheets in it and
you want to get into another worksheet in the workbook, and if this is
correct do the following:

Control+Shift+S to open a JAWS dialog box listing all of the worksheets
Control+Shift+in
that workbook.

If my memory is correct, your focus will be on the worksheet at the top of
the list. This list has the first worksheet at the top and the last
worksheet at the bottom. It does not matter what worksheet you were just
working in, every time you open this JAWS dialog box your focus will be at
the top of the list.

Use your up and down arrow keys to move to the worksheet you want and press
enter to open it.

Hi,
I'm not sure exactly what you mean out of its table mode. If you have a
table on a webpage, you can copy it into Word or into Excel and then do
various things with it. For example, I just had a webpage table of contact
info from which I needed to extract E-mail addresses for a group message. I
copied the table into Excel. I then copied just the E-mail column and
pasted that into Word. I then did a search and replace and replaced all the
carriage returns with a semicolon and a space. I now have my list of E-mail
addresses that I can paste into the send field of my E-mail. Sometimes you
just have to get kind of creative.

[JAWS-Users] Internet and E-mail Problems

2014-03-25 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,

I am using the latest build of JAWS 15 and Windows 8. I am having some
E-mail and internet problems and I would like to know if any of you have any
idea what is going on and how to fix it.

I have three E-mail accounts, all hosted by Xeran, which is my web host.
All three accounts are set up in outlook 2010. Sometimes, when I start my
computer, the new E-mails will not show up for one of the accounts. It is
always the same account. Restarting Outlook does not fix the problem but
restarting the computer does fix it and the problem will remain fixed for as
long as the computer is running, at least until the next shutdown and
restart. This problem is intermittent. It is more frequent than it used to
be. It will happen at least once per week and sometimes, for a while, it
will happen every day.

The other problem is that, sometimes, when I start the computer, I will not
have internet access in Internet Explorer 10, though other programs, like
Outlook, can access the internet. Again, to fix the problem, I have to
restart the computer. This usually doesn't happen at the same time as the
E-mail problem.

Both of these problems happen rather I am on wifi or on a wired network
connection.

Any ideas? This is getting very frustrating.

Thanks,

Scott Duck

That did the trick. column was in date format . knew it had to be something
easy if you knew what you were looking for, like you did.

Also, it is not CTRL+F1 as I mistakenly typed. It is CTRL+1 that brings up

Hello Scott,

Use the formula =sum(h2,k2,l2)
There should be no spacing in the formula. You had a space after h2. A
comma follows h2 and k2 but not l2. No plus signs are used in that formula.
You could also just type =h2+k2+l2 again without using the word sum and with
no spacing and no parentheses or commas just a plus sign between h2 and k2
and another one between k2 and l2.

I am not sure what you mean with the second part of your question. You can
copy the content of a cell with CTRL+C and paste it in another empty cell.
I don't think that is what you are meaning though.

Take care.

Hi
Emailed Total recorder and here is what they said.
Hello Scott Meyer,

I hooked up the cassette player using the headphone jack (the only
 line
out available to me)to the line in of my laptop computer.

If your record player has no line-out jack and is connected to your PC
soundcard with a headset jack, then most probably you will need to use a
pre-amp or connect your LP player to microphone line of your soundcard
(instead of line-in).

but I can not hear what is being recorded.

IN Professional Edition hit the Listen while capturing button (Volume and
Level Panel). This button turns on/off the listen-while-capturing mode. When
the mode is on, all sound captured from the sound board is sent to your
speakers.

High Criteria Support Team.

Glad it is working. Not sure about hearing what you are recording as well
but if you poke around a bit in some of the settings there may be a check

This
may allow that. The other alternative I could think of, but now you are
getting into more cost, is running things through a mixer which allows
various input and output device running simultaneously.
I'll look a bit and see if I can find a way next time I'm in Total Recorder
Also, I believe you can upgrade to 8.5 at no charge, not that this will make
a difference in your current concern.

Hello Scott,

In my message I said that you should use H followed by O followed by W to
get to where you can adjust column width. I forgot to mention that you use
Alt key prior to pressing H. The corrected message is below:

Use Alt followed by H followed by O followed by W, type in the width you
want to use and press enter key. To confirm the change you can use the JAWS
key with F command and the two numbers given at the end of the information
JAWS gives you will be the width and height of the current cell or selection
of cells.
A quick way to confirm is to hold down JAWS key and press F twice, use CTRL
end in the virtual window and then up arrow a couple times to the width and
height information.

Take care.

You need to do the break for headers and footers separately. If you want
different header and footers for odd and even pages you should break the
connection for headers and footers of odd and even pages separatly also.
You should continue tabbing. May be I misleded you, it is not a link. Jaws
pronounces it as checkbox. It is found in the design tab, last in the
navigation section, fifth one in the tab order in the section.
Or you can just press
alt+j+h+k. For me the hotkeys not seem to work consistently and often I
alt+j+h+go
to check if they worked.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS and Error Messages

2014-01-20 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Everyone,

Sometimes, I will get an error message in whatever program that I am using
at the moment and JAWS will stop speaking until the error message is
cleared. For example, if I am using IE and I get the message Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, JAWS will fall
silent until I hit the close button to close Internet Explorer. It will
not read the error message. I either have to get someone sited to read the
error message or I run another screen reader to see what is going on. Now,
when JAWS stops speaking, I will hit the space bar so that, if this is the
problem, it will close the error message. I have also encountered this with
Word and Outlook. I am running JAWS 15 but this happened with JAWS 14 too.
This has occurred ever sense I have had this computer. I have not had this
problem on other machines. This is the only PC that I have used that is
running Windows 8. I don't know if it is a Windows 8 thing or something
specific to this computer. Any thoughts?

Hello list,

I downloaded the latest JFW release from yesterday and am noticing a bug
that for me is significant and was curious to know whether others are
experiencing it as well.

In my Outlook 2010, I have six separate inboxes listed in my Favorites
treeview section. This enabled me to have quick and easy access to each
email inbox with minimal arrowing.

Previously Jaws would announce “Inbox” and if there were any unread
messages, the number of unread emails in that particular inbox as well. Now,
since updating, Jaws only announces this unread information for the first
few moments after launching Outlook, but soon after, JFW does not announce
any unread messages even if there are any in that particular folder.

These emails are a mixture of personal and business. My mailing list email
is always getting emails all day. Whereas other more important accounts may
receive

Them more speratically. I now have to go from inbox to inbox to check to see
if there are any emails be ith when I get a chime notification of a new
message or if I happen to step away from my computer or am doing something
else that takes my focus away from the pc.

Are others in fact noticing this issue as well? I hadn’t changed any
settings in my Outlook or Jaws from the prior version of JFW 15 that I was

Re: [JAWS-Users] Bug with latest JFW 15 with Outlook folders

2013-12-18 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,
I have three inboxes, two IMAP and one POP. I am able to switch between
them just fine with no crashes. I guess that's good or bad for you,
depending on how you look at it. LOL. Seriously, sounds like there is
something going on with your JFW installation or your Outlook. What version
of Windows are you running?
Thanks,

Just my luck... Outlook's crashing on me when I switch from one inbox to
another (imap) too. I experienced this before on a couple of the beta
releases, but thankfully not after the final release. The update
installation seemed to have gone through fine with no problems. Who knows,
maybe it was just a buggy update. If I can't figure it out, then I may just
uninstall and reinstall JFW 15 again. Oh joy.

I hadn’t changed any
settings in my Outlook or Jaws from the prior version of JFW 15 that I was
running yesterday to today when I installed the update.

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Invitations in Outlook 2010

2013-12-17 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Everyone,

I am using Outlook 2010. I have found that, when someone sends me a
calendar invitation to a meeting, it does not display correctly. It does
not give me the option to accept or decline and add it to the calendar,
etcetera. I just have a lot of what looks like html code in the E-mail
body. The same invitation works fine on my iPhone so the problem is not
anything to do with the E-mail itself. Does anyone have any thoughts as to
how to fix this?

Thanks,

Scott Duck

No, the code did not change with JAWS 13. As far as I know, you cannot

First, is it true that starting with Jaws 13 we all received a new 20-digit
authorization code and couldn't use the one we had in Jaws 12? I don't know
where I heard this but thought I'd heard that starting at 13 our codes would
be different. I am asking because I have 13, 14 and now 15 on my computer
but when I tried activating 15 it said the code I entered was for an earlier
version of Jaws and wouldn't work. But I can't get Jaws 14 to tell me what
code is in it because it works just fine and fully functional. I don't have
a disc with me and really want to take Jaws 15 out of demo and wondered if I
could somehow retrieve my code from Jaws 14 and paste that code into the
activation of Jaws 15. I hope someone can help.

Hi Scott,

I haven't noticed anyone addressing the basic point to using your Caps
Lock on a laptop. Have you set your Use Keyboard Layout to Laptop?
From within the Option menu in JAWS, press enter on the Basics...
Tab down approximately 7 times until you hear Use Keyboard Layout.
If you do not have the Laptop chosen, this is where you need to change to
make the Caps Lock work.
You can save it in 2 manners at this point. As the Okay is the default,
you can hit enter or press tab until you hear Okay and then hit enter.

FYI, even if you now use a USB Keyboard with your laptop, the Caps Lock
Will continue to work as another JAWS Key. The Insert Key will continue to
work also as the JAWS Key...

HTH...

Vinny

Hi Alan,
I guess it depends on your situation. I started using Excel many years
before there was even such a thing as a virtual ribbon. I have gotten so
use to the key combinations that I don't consciously try to remember them, I
just sort of know them, and I find them to be much more efficient. In this
case, I posted a way to do it without the virtual ribbons because Annette
specifically asked for that.

Hi Annette,
I'm not sure about using the JAWS commands to do it but you can use the
Excel 2003 shortcuts to do it in Excel2010 as well. To add a sheet, press
alt I, followed by W. This will add a sheet before the sheet that you are
currently on. To rename a worksheet, press alt O, followed by H, followed
by R. You will land in an edit field which contains the name of the sheet
and you can change it and then press enter. I am using Excel 2010 and
that's how I do it. I have never used the JAWS specific commands for this
so I have no comment concerning that.

Hi Scott.

At first you must run the archive tool in Outlook, so your message folders
and addressbook folder are stored.
Than you should findd
them in your Document's folder, in a subfolder named Outlook-files.

Don't have Office 2007 myself, I am running Office 2010 and 2013, but
hopefully the description work's.

[JAWS-Users] Drafts View in Outlook 2010

Hi,

Somehow, I have screwed up the way that the list of messages is displayed in

Hello Scott,

It sounds like you might have turned on the show in groups option. You
can check this by first making sure nothing is selected in the list. If a
message is selected use CTRL with spacebar to remove the selection. Use the
application key and find the Arrange by menu. Right arrow in to the
submenu and arrow down to the show in groups choice. If it is checked
just press enter to remove the checkmark. When the show in groups is
active a person needs to use right arrow key to expand and left arrow key to
collapse a group of messages.

Take care.

Hi,

Somehow, I have screwed up the way that the list of messages is displayed in
my drafts folder. I can't just arrow up and down any more. I go down a few
and then I have to use the left arrow to get to the rest and it takes a
while to do so (computer just sits there for several seconds). I assume
that the messages are in multiple columns. All of my other folders are
still the same, in one column, where I can just arrow up and down the list.
Any suggestions concerning fixing this? I have looked at all of the options

Check out the following web page for an interesting article that argues that
it may be time to give up on Microsoft Security Essentials and sswitch to
another anti-virus program. But if what the article says is true and MSE is
no longer effective, what other free JAWS-accessible anti-virus programs are
still available? Forget about Avast, which requires sighted help to
uninstall, or AVG which some users claim is no longer JAWS friendly. Are
there any other decent free anti-virus programs that work well with JAWS?

I believe that, this close to the JAWS 15 release, if he bought JAWS14 now,

Hi,

A friend wishes to update his JAWS from JAWS10. He was thinking of upgrading
to JAWS14, until I told him that JAWS15 will soon be out.
However, I also told him (as he's using Windows7) that JAWS14 would work
fine with it; and that now (or very soon) he'd be entitled to JAWS15 free if
he bought JAWS14. is that policy in operation right now, or indeed, should
he wait un til JAWS15 comes out and pay for it instead?
His dealer informed him if he bought JAWS now it'd be JAWS14 and that he'd
have to pay for any upgrades, including that to JAWS15. As we're well in the
beta cycle for 15, I don't think that's necessarily the case.

thank you for any clarification.

[JAWS-Users] Problems With E-mail After Installing Omnipage

2013-09-23 Thread Scott Duck
Hi,

Last week, I wrote to the list to ask for OCR suggestions. One of the OCR
packages that was highly recommended was Omnipage. I got the trial version
of Omnipage Ultimate. I like it but it has caused a little problem. After
installing Omnipage, when I first start Outlook and try to go into a mail
message, I get a dialog box saying that there is no E-mail program installed
to perform the requested action. I hit OK and it goes on into the message
and everything works fine from that point on. After that first message, it
doesn't do it again until I close Outlook and open it again. Then, the same
thing will happen but, again, only with the first message that I open. It
really isn't a big deal but it is a little annoying. Does anyone have any
idea how to fix this little annoyance? I am using JAWS15, Windows 8,
Outlook 2010, and Omnipage Ultimate 18.

Thanks,

To my knowledge, NLS has chosen only to allow authorization of dedicated

Hello,

I have read your account and the installation did not work as expected. I
suggest you consider contacting support and asking for some assistance
sorting out the installation issue. I think that it never completed as
expected. There are two options that the support people will probably
suggest. Either looking to see if it is installed and then uninstalling, or
doing a special install from the command line that would force and
over-write of everything in the JAWS 15 install you have. We have not been
getting any reports of installation issues as you describe so I'm certain
that this is something we just need to help you sort out.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JFW 15 installation issues

Hello list,

So I took the plunge with the beta over the weekend and had the oddest
experience that I hadn't encountered with previous JFW beta cycles. I
already submitted a bug report to FS, but since this bug doesn't really
allow me to work with the beta, I was curious to know if this is something
others have come across or if it was perhaps something that went wrong just
on my system.

In any event, I downloaded the exe file (64 bit) and went through the
process of instalation like normal. At the end doing the whole restart for
changes to take affect etc.

After this was done and my computer powered back up, there was no indication
of Jaws 15 anywhere on my desktop or in the start menu. The FSReader 3.0
icon did appear on my desktop and indeed launched fine so this showed me
that something was installed. I eventually went through the windows
explorer, Program Files, Freedom scientific, Run Jaws and then to the Jaws
15 folder. There I found the JFW 15 exe file and figured I would just for
convenience sake throw a short cut to the file on my desktop.

After placing the JFW.exe short cut and renaming it for Jaws 15, I unloaded
JFW 14 and started JFW 15. However, while using the JFW 15 beta, I am
finding that the settings I change in the voice profile section aren't
sticking. Even though I speed up the rate of speech and press the ok button,
Jaws reverts to its default slow rate setting. I also tried the startup
wizard under the help menu, but it along with the check for authorization
and check for updates options appear as unavailable.

Like I said, I already submitted these problems through the beta form, but
since there's no real option to call it in and get more detailed support, I
thought I'd write to see if others dealt with these same issues and what if
anything they did to fix them since as of now, I can't really work with JFW
15 and don't know if this issue will persist through to when it finally gets
released in its final form.

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Problems Sorting E-mail

2013-09-12 Thread Scott Duck
Hello,

I'm using JAWS 15 with Windows 8 and Office 2010. Recently, I find that I
cannot sort my E-mail in Outlook. I want to sort a particular folder by
sender in order to find a set of E-mails. I go to view arrangement
arrange by. When I press space or enter, nothing happens. This used to
work and now it doesn't and I don't understand why. It is not a JAWS 15
issue because I tried it running JAWS 14 and got the same result. I'm sure
that I'm missing something simple but I can't think of what it might be.
It's 5:00am and I haven't had my coffee yet and that may be the problem.
Anyway, for the moment, I'm stumped. If anyone can, please help.

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 15 beta

2013-09-12 Thread Scott Duck
Susie,
I may not understand your situation correctly but I think that I may see
your problem here. If you have gone into the settings center and changed
the setting for quotation marks to none then it will read the quotation
marks when you have punctuation verbosity set to none or anything more
verbose than none. All of the other punctuation verbosity settings are more
verbose than none so it will always read the quotation marks. Not sure if
that made sense. Go in and change the setting for quotation marks to all
and then, unless you have your punctuation verbosity set to all, it
shouldn't read them. If this doesn't make enough sense, let me know and
I'll try to explain better.

Re: [JAWS-Users] new voices?

2013-09-11 Thread Scott Duck
Hi Guys,
I have installed the U.S. Vocalizer Expressive voices on my machine. I have
used Ava a little and I don't think that I have ever heard a happier
sounding synthetic voice, unlike Samantha, who always sounds a little mad.
I wish that Ava was available for my iPhone. Overall though, for JAWS, I
still prefer plain old Eloquence. I have used it for 15 years or so, ever
sense they started packaging it with JAWS, and I have just gotten so use to
it that it seems a little strange using anything else. The Eloquence voice
itself sounds very robotic but I think that it does a better job at very
high speeds and the pronunciation is a little better than many of these more
natural sounding voices.

Allison, Ava, Smantha, and Tom are the U.S. voices. However, they are very
expressive as was discussed in the latest FS cast as compared to previous
versions. The direct version does not indicate caps by raising pitch like
the expressive version. I am using Ava myself and am very happy with the
response on my Windows 7 64 bit running both jaws and magic with 6 gigs of
ram.
I am not up on all the additional voices for other countries but I am
impressed with all the vocalizer expressive voices out there for everyone
already.
I am also very happy with the first public beta so far.
It's playing very well with Magic 12 and comes in handy on all these
overcrowded web sites today.
