That would've driven them nuts, for sure!
I just unplugged the monitor once. That solved that problem.

I always tell sighted people who want to use the computer that they should
turn off JAWS. It slows down the system and without making changes to web
settings I have no desire to make, makes it difficult for sighted people
to
interact normally with web browsers. However, I guess I understand in
this

case, that you might not feel comfortable with not knowing exactly what
these sighted people are doing on your system.

Hey all

My girlfriend an di are both blind and her daughter likes to visit sites

Is there a program out there that would be a tattle tell?

Something that she wouldn't be able to see because she does go in and

Looking for something that also blind friendly.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Another option, since some sighted people want to mess around with the
display settings and layout, is to create a separate user account. And, to
be safe, don't give them admin privileges unless you trust them.

Can't tell you specifically, because every router is different. Here's what
you need to know:

1. Your router brand and model number.
(Note, depending on your ISP, you may have the router built into your cable
or DSL modem. Otherwise, it is a separate box that connects to your cable
or dsl modem via a network cable.)

2. The log-in credentials for your router; your username and password.
(Note: Whatever the device, you need to make sure you change the user name
and password from the standard log-in that's comes with your modem/router,
because anybody can figure that out, including your daughter, and reset your
parental controls.)

3. You will find parental controls usually under some header in the set-up
page for your router like possibly internet security or something.

You can set you and/or your girlfriend as administrators so only you can

Not if she's able to hack the admin account. If she ever takes a look at
running process from admin account, she'll see everything. She wouldn't
necessarily know what it was for, but it sounds like she is pretty savvy

Someone else on the list asked about this a while ago and got no responses.
I really know nothing about it. I'd be the kid looking at all the forbidden
sites and subverting parents at every turn. *grins*...but when I was a teen
in the 90s, I was pretty much all on my own as far as the computer was
concerned.

There are native Windows features you can use to block certain sites. I've
never looked into it but they're here in Windows 10. I see them referred to
as "parental controls". You could look into those.

I believe Windows 7 has some parental controls built-in, and you can always

Another option, and maybe the best, is to setup a restricted user account on

There is an audio tutorial on the server that will cover this process, I
suggest you give it a listen first. If after listening to it you still have
any questions then feel free to pose them on here.

Alan,

SFC /Scannow will detect and fix most corrupted windows
files, but depending on just how corupted your operating
system is, it can also report at the end of the scan that
there were corupted files detected that could not be
repaired, and that you should try using a recovery method
or just reinstall Windows. Most people do not see this

You have to monitor this scan pretty closely. The scan results appear on the
screen when it finishes, and I do not know if there is an option to save it
or not. I have taken a screen shot of the results to be able to refer back
to them. If you are in another window when the scan finishes, you will not
see the results by alt tabbing around to them. The seem to disappear if this
is attempted. It is not a good utility for doing another task while it is
running, but the results are good.

Re: [JAWS-Users] looking for a program to find and get ridof Windowserrors

2015-05-13 Thread Steve
Jorge,

Two things. First, you have the syntax for the scannow command incorrectly
typed. Second, you need to run that from an elevated command prompt in Windows
7.

It is SFC space forward-slash scannow written in quotes below as:
sfc /scannow which you need to put in an elevated command prompt in Windows 7
without the quotes.

Here is an article that will explain how to get the elevated command prompt
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/a/elevated-command-prompt-windows-7.htm

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hi,

You will want to open the Run dialogue box by pressing the Windows logo key
+ the letter R. then type in sfc /scannow without the quotes of
+ course,
and the system file checker will start scanning your Windows files for
missing and corrupted files. It should take less than an hour for the scan
to run, and at the end, the scanner will report the system's status to you.
It will say that:

1. There were no corruptions found,
2. That there were corruptions found and fixed, or 3. There were Corruptions
found, but they could not be repaired.

If the latter one appears, you would need to run a repair on your Windows,
using either a repair or the installation disk, and you will probably need
some sighted assistance, as you have to boot into safe mode to accomplish
this.

2015-05-12 Thread Jorge Rivas
Hi,
I did perform the steps below as mention in the run dialog and the file was
not recognize by my computer.
I typed, sfc-scannow, with no spaces or quotes.

I'm using win7, Office 2013.

Any idea, why I cannot get the scan to run?

Thanks,

Jorge

If the latter one appears, you would need to run a repair on your Windows,
using either a repair or the installation disk, and you will probably need
some sighted assistance, as you have to boot into safe mode to accomplish
this.

+ the letter R. then type in sfc /scannow without the quotes of course,
and the system file checker will start scanning your Windows files for
missing and corrupted files. It should take less than an hour for the scan
to run, and at the end, the scanner will report the system's status to
you.

It will say that:

1. There were no corruptions found,
2. That there were corruptions found and fixed, or
3. There were Corruptions found, but they could not be repaired.

If the latter one appears, you would need to run a repair on your Windows,
using either a repair or the installation disk, and you will probably need
some sighted assistance, as you have to boot into safe mode to accomplish
this.

Yes, I do not know when this utility was introduced into Windows, but it is
included in Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Probably XP and Vista as well.

No, you can be doing something while the scan runs, but you might limit it
to just one or two programs open at one time. Depending on how much memory
(RAM) your computer has, you should be OK running at least one program
while
the scan runs at the same time.

Not sure what you are exactly shooting for, but there are certainly
programs out there that can kill running programs, and you can just set

I did use end it all on my xp machine. You could uncheck the processes that
you did not want terminated. I did a quick search and win 7 is not listed. I
did find this information:

To kill any particular process use the Taskkill command. For example to kill
Firefox, run the command as:

Taskkill /IM firefox.exe /F

where /F is used to kill the process forcefully. You can also kill any
particular process by using it’s ID, the tasklist command displays the
process ID’s as well (you can see the PID column in the screenshot). To kill
any process using it’s ID, run the command as:

Taskkill /PID 2704 /F

Now to kill multiple processes simultaneously, run the above command with
the PID’s of all the processes followed by spaces

Taskkill /PID 2704 5472 4344 /F

It occurs to me that a program that will automatically shutdown another
running program while not necessarily shutting down the computer might be
nice. Does anybody know of such an animal?

This would be for example when you want something to run but for only a
certain period of time, just a thought. I would be surprised if such a thing
existed.

Hi

You can use taskkill, which comes with Windows XP and 7. To learn how to
use it, from a command prompt, type taskkill /?. That's
taskkill-space-slash-questionmarkr.

Take a look at the following page. I'm sure you will find something in

Suzie, Don't press enter on the file. use the applications key and
arrow to Extract and press enter. The process should be fairly
automatic at that point.

win xp has the unzip program built right in there is no need to get
another unless you want to deal with rar files.

xp just calls them compressed zip folders.

Re: [JAWS-Users] looking for a program to convert words in phonenumbers to numbers

2008-04-07 Thread Bob J.
Hello Mich,

It isn't clear to me if you wanted a program that will only translate the
letters into the appropriate numbers or if you wanted the program to also
dial the phone for you.

I don't know what else is available else where but I have a JFW script that
converts all alphabetic characters in the system clipboard into the
corresponding numbers on a telephone dial or keypad. The script speaks the
original contents and then the converted contents. How the clipboard
becomes populated with the characters of interest is up to the user. What
becomes of the converted contents of the clipboard is also up to the user.
I have this script in my default script file so it is available at just
about anytime.

hth

Bob

Hi all. I just was at the jaws users sight. and I was looking around the

would convert the words in a phone number to numbers. For example say I
wanted to call 1-800-ToysRUs this program would do this. I looked around the
sight and didn't find this program. If any one knows what this program is
cald and can point me in the right direction to find it that would be grate.

Mitch,

I found 2 on the JAWS-Users page that I think will do what you want:

Phone Converter Alpha
Program That Converts Alpha Numeric Characters In To Numbers On A Telephone

phonnr10
Converts alphanumeric strings to phone numbers

They are in the Programs page in the Utilities section
