How so, if there were _no_ such genres? You'd then go by artist name, or composer, or some similar scheme. I'm a listener - and nobody has ever forced me to pidgeonhole music. I've got all the free will I need for it. The evidence is more and more coming in that free will is indeed nothing but an illusion... ;-) However, let's not get side tracked into starting a scientific and philosophical discussion. It's only when one tries to squeeze the music itself, or the artist, into a narrow pigeon coop when clearly it is far too great and far too big-minded to be confined thus, that categorisation becomes, err... silly. Are there no such things as musical genres? There are indeed, and they do have their uses, to be sure, and can be convenient. But they are, by their nature, rather narrow definitions and from an artistic POV rarely make too much sense. Much great music just cannot be confined by such small compartmentalisation. Great minds won't be confined, period. Pidgeonholing may be convenient in some contexts, but often great music just won't conveniently fit, and then it's the pidgeonhole concept that ends up looking rather silly. Uh-oh. Seems to me we've been down this road already a few dozen times. George (Put pigeons in coops, not holes!) Robinson To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. --Theodore Roosevelt - Original Message - From: r l reid [EMAIL PROTECTED]; r l reid [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: World music from a Jewish slant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, May 04, 2003 5:28 PM Subject: Re: An Israelite Odyssey - Review of Koby Israelite's Dance of R.A.S. wrote: defeats any silly genre classification Why is genre classification silly?
