KR> Alternator Wiring
There should be an "F" designating which terminal is the Field connection, normally . - Original Message - From: "Dave Dunwoodie"To: Sent: Saturday, August 28, 2010 7:54 AM Subject: KR> Alternator Wiring > This probably sounds really stupid, so I'll ask anyway!!! KR> Charging System
Jim Morehead wrote... Netters, I'm running a Revmaster engine in my KR. I have a volt meter but no ammeter. When I run engine a 3000 RPMs it charges 16.5 volts. I don't want to boil the water out of my battery. Does anyone else using the Revmaster set up have any trouble with it. If so what is your solution? Thanks Jim Morehead N522PC ___ Voltmeters show the voltage level in the system, not necessarily the charge rate to the battery. A standard 12 volt battery in a fully charged state actually produces 1.2 volts per cell or about 13.2 volts total. If the load on the system is higher than the battery will put out in a static state, the charging system will make up the difference and you may (emphasis on may) see total system voltage in excess of 13.2 volts. My car typically runs at about 14 t0 14.5 volts on the gauge and the battery I am currently running is 5 years old, passes all of the basic condition tests (specific gravity of the electrolyte, charge rate via amp meter, charge status via amp meter, etc.). If you are really concerned with it, hang an ammeter on it to see how the charging system is performing. It doesn't make any difference what kind of engine you have in your car/plane/bike/boat or whatever... all the motor does is turn an electical power generator at a given RPM... the charging / electrical system really has nothing to do with the motor itself be it a rotary (Mazda), Corvair, VW, Continental or whatever. KR> Maple Grove Fly In
Please, everyone! Head to 65G the weekend after Labor Day. The main event is Sunday, Sep. 12, with a "big deal" breakfast, but most folks show up Friday PM or sometime Saturday. If memory serves, this is the 59th year!!! Everything from Grummans to twin Aero-Commanders to KR's to MediVac Bell 430's, even several Huey's will likely be there. Everybody shares rides all day Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday being the heaviest flying day. EAA is active at these events, with lots of Young Eagle flights. The Boy Scouts are there, and just about everybody else you can think of! Lots of skydiving as well. We have E/W and N/S runways, everything is turf, very well maintained. Runways are well marked, lighting on pilot command. 9/27 is 3050', 18/36 is 2000'. E66 is co-located, in case you want to fly in by helicopter. Unicom 122.8. Call on downwind, left traffic. I will be there with the Warrior, and (hopefully) the KR2. I'll feed any KR types that fly in. This year I'm planning on top sirloin and T-bones, Western style, toss in a shrimp or two and some corn on the cob. Life is good! Bring your sleeping bag, or plan on a motel or hotel just a few minutes down the road. This is *the* major event in our area each year, fun for kids of all ages! We especially look forward to the University of Michigan's "Survival Flight" team arriving for breakfast! Please contact Dennis, airport manager, at 517-223-7809 if you need additional information. Dave.
KR> Gathering?
Well, add another Senior to the list. I just submitted my info on the "Gathering" web site. Hope it's not too late to register but I thought I had used up all of my domestic capital having gone to Oshkosh, and acquiring my KR project. Of course I'm in debt to my wife but what's another one on top of all the rest. KR> Alternator Wiring
This probably sounds really stupid, so I'll ask anyway!!! I have a Revmaster 2100 with the standard alternator, 2 wires leaving from it, going to a connector that has a couple of pins jumped and then to the voltage regulator, etc. For lack of a diagram, I installed a relay between alternator output and load. On a test run, I killed the master switch, but the panel didn't completely shutdown. Upon investigation, I discovered that the alternator was powering the panel, and it cost me a radio in the process. Hence, the relay. However, I think the accepted practice is to switch the field instead of using a relay on the output. So the really stupid question is "How do I ID the field?" Is it that jumper on the connector at the voltage regulator? Thanks! Dave.
KR> KR2 VS RV8
> MAN! I got a chance to fly an RV-8 yesterday. It felt as NATURAL as > can be, Easy and responsive. I have yet to be able to fly a KR2. Can > anyone tell me how the KR compares to the RV in its flight characteristics? > > Thanks. > See y'all at the Gathering!-- > > Glenn Martin > KR2 N1333A Glenn, having spent some hours in both KRs and RVs I do think you need to take a couple things into comparison. The RV is a much heavier airplane than the KR which gives it a little more stable feel in cruise and rough conditions. The pitch in a standard KR-2S is a little lighter, the pitch in a stock KR-2 is even a little bit more light but both airplanes are finger tip flying airplanes. Point them where you want them to go, don't try and coheres either of these airplanes, they don't need heavy inputs. From what I have seen the roll characteristics of these two airplanes is quite different. Remember, the airframe of all RV's are built pretty much alike so the flight characteristics in roll are pretty reliable between airplanes, pitch can be different due to weight, CG etc. The RV roll rate is quicker in my experience than a KR, whatever the reason is, I don't know but the coordination between elevator and aileron in an RV feel pretty much the same. You can see a half deflection roll rate of my RV-7 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLWjPt2gpR0 A loop and roll taken from a video camera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V11syYF08QI I know several people on this list have some RV time,ie., Dan, so I'm sure they will chime in. KR> Charging System
Jim, I would replace the regulator. That voltage will kill the battery, and many avionics.
