KR> N891JF is flying again

Weight is about 640 empty, 120 pounds less than N56ML when it was new, but there's at least 60 pounds difference in engine weight. There are weight savings to be had, for example the 16.5 pound cowling can be reduced to 4 pounds if done in carbon fiber, and more streamlined as well. This will help out the far-forward CG as well.I'll also implement cooling plenums like N56ML, just to determine the difference, but I want to get the engine broken in first. Performance is too early to tell, but it'll likely be 20 mph slower due the RAF48 wing and less powerful engine. I don't even have wheel pants on it yet, although I did fly again late today. Six more landings and they were mostly very smooth ones. I think the straight-wired tailwheel cables are a huge help... Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com website at http://www.N56ML.com

Chris, I am using the Innovate Digital MTX obtained from Jegs Performance. I have tried other AFR gauges, but these were not suitable for the aviation application. Prices vary along with data logging and other bells and whistles. If you burn 100 LL, expect to replace the O2 sensor every 100 hours or so due to lead clogging. http://www.jegs.com/p/Innovate-Motorsports/Innovate-Motorsports-Digital-MTX-Wideband-Gauge/1558858/10002/-1 Whatever mixture meter you decide on, highly recommend you get it as a system with O2 sensor, computer and display from one vendor, brand and model. Don't forget the correct bung to weld into your exhaust pipe. I put on a Mixture Meter forum at the Gathering each year and also at AirVenture. Won't make the Gathering this year - Chino just to far for me - but definitely will be at Oshkosh. Sid Wood smwood at md.metrocast.net Tri-gear KR-2 N6242 Mechanicsville, MD, USA - Original Message - Sid, What mixture meter are you using? Thanks Chris Gardiner - My Zenith on the 2180 VW does go rich to lean from idle to WOT. I have a Mixture Meter that shows this in real-time and can dial in the mixture from the cockpit as needed. The knob in the cockpit is connected to the needle valve on the carb by a VW speedometer cable. As far as I can determine, the Zenith I am using has only two jets: an idle jet with a screw adjustment and a run jet with a screw adjustment. The run jet is the one that I am adjusting from the cockpit mixture control knob. This set up works fine for me. I figure: It ain't broke, so I don't need to fix it. In my company of one, I am putting the design engineer on furlough and turning the flight testing over to the test pilot and flight test engineer. >> >> Sid Wood --

It felt like a "first flight", given that I'd removed, upgraded, or replaced just about everything in the plane, so the stress level was a bit high. It was a fairly uneventful flight though, 2.4 hours and 9 touch-and-goes just to get the feel of it (and the new speed brake) again. I do very much like the speed brake. I'm now working through a short list of minor squawks, and number one on the list was the deletion of the tailwheel cable springs and slack and making them "straight wired" like N56ML, which I've already dealt with. A lot of data was gathered, the Explorer is being recalibrated based on that data, and it's now full of fuel and awaiting the next flight. I'd have flown again today but it was a bit windy for that, and will be for the next several days. Tomorrow night will likely be the reinstallation of wheel pants. I think this will do nicely... Congratulations Mark. I to made my first flight in left seat in a C172 in 25 years. It felt like I was a brand new student pilot at first. The instructor was very impressed how I progress throughout the flight. He said one more flight should do it. ? How does 819JF performance and weight and balance compare to 56ML?
