[libreoffice-l10n] Conclusion about Translation help for unit 40270452?

2013-06-18 Thread Leif Lodahl
The string that begins with With several legacy pre-ODF1.2 and ODF1.2-only
consumers out there... is still not finally concluded or?

The latest mail is this:
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/l10n/msg06126.html I think.

It would be nice to get it final before strings are pulled for the RC1
today.

Cheers,

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Conclusion about Translation help for unit 40270452?

2013-06-18 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think the we got close enough with;

ODF 1.2 Extended (compat) is written to be more compatible with legacy
software that still uses ODF 1.0 and 1.1, as well as with current
software that uses pure ODF 1.2 (ie 1.2 without the Extended
features).

I was expecting people to change it around a bit but it seemed to be
close enough.  There had been a paragraph about specific examples of
legacy and current software but it probably is better to avoid being so
specific.

quote
So if you're only using current versions of LibreOffice, you don't
need that compatibility format. But when you exchange/process
documents with non-LibreOffice (and non-OpenOffice, or just
ancient versions) software that doesn't understand ODF 1.2 format,
then this format will (probably) help.
/quote

On the other hand the quote above helps us understand exactly what is being
talked about and it's very easy for non-geeks to understand so maybe that
should be re-worked instead?  Perhaps to;

If you're only using current versions of LibreOffice, you don't need the ODF
1.2 Extended (compat) format. But if you exchange/process documents with
non-LibreOffice (and non-OpenOffice, or just ancient versions) software that
doesn't understand ODF 1.2 format, then this format will (probably) help.  So,
if you ever use ODF 1.0 or 1.1 or 1.2 (without the Extended features) then this
compatibility format can be used instead.

Tom :)

Hi :)

I prefer Italo's suggestion too.

Sergio's suggestions seemed fine except that they needed more thes and
thats in English.  I suspect that translations of it would have been
perfect.  With these sorts of things i think it helps for a few people to
discuss and put forwards alternative suggestions to help us understand what the
original was trying to say.  It is extra noise/traffic on the lists which some
may object to but i think it helps get a better result.  Anyway, i think Italo
nailed it and i like to think that Sergio and i helped him get there.

Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Conclusion about Translation help for unit 40270452?

2013-06-18 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Yes, i like that too.  In English perhaps tweaked to this?

The ODF 1.2 Extended (compat) mode is a more backward-compatible format.  It
uses features that are deprecated in ODF 1.2 (Extended) and/or it is
'bug-compatible' to older OpenOffice.org versions.  It may be useful, if you
need to interchange ODF documents with users, who use pre-ODF 1.2 (such as ODF
1.0 or ODF 1.1) legacy applications or ODF 1.2-only current applications.

From what i understood, but i could easily be wrong ...
1.  OpenOffice also uses the ODF 1.2 (Extended) doesn't it?  So there is no
need to use a compatibility format if you are sharing documents with people
using any version of AOO or with people using OOo 3.0 or maybe even slightly
earlier.  You might need it for much earlier versions of OOo.

2.  Most programs using 1.2 will be current rather than legacy.  Most wont
have the Extended features of LibreOffice but will still be current.
(hence why i deleted legacy from the end of that last sentence.  In English
it looks like it's referring to 1.2 apps as being legacy.

3.  MS Office 2007 and 2010 are examples of legacy apps that use ODF 1.1 but
it's a good idea to avoid mentioning MS at all.  The hints are enough
(hopefully).

So i think Andras' suggestion is good enough but a little tweaking makes it
more precise?
Regards from
Tom :)

Definitely not. We really need to get these new English strings reviewed by
(preferably) native speakers, this is getting embarrassing :(

Yes. The question is, how? If someone volunteers, it's fine.
Otherwise, there are 50+ help translators, who can report bugs, the
earlier, the better. I think localizers did a really good job in this
4.1 beta cycle, and helped to improve the quality a lot. Please, keep
up the good work.
