Mike Hersch,

You know that this is one of three groups you post to which we share, that
removes all graphics sent to the group. Why not send a link to the
original?

I've replied on all of them to you several times about this. Maybe these
are post only groups for you and you don't read any replies you get?

Dear Friends and Allies,

I want to personally invite you to an important morning of action on
Thursday, November 1st at 10am at City Hall. I am sending you this because
of your commitment to building a vibrant, equitable and just food movement
for the City of Los Angeles. Like you, I believe that our City can and
should be a place where everyone can freely grow, sell and distribute
healthy food, especially in food scarce neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the
City of Los Angeles is home to some of the most egregious laws and
practices that prohibit people from doing this, including a growing crack
down on street food vendors, harassment and penalties for those who feed
the hungry and policies that prohibit the expansion of urban gardening
efforts.

If you are like me, and you want our City’s leaders, policymakers and law
enforcement agencies to end the criminalization of LA residents who simply
want to put food on their tables,* then join us for Hunger Action Day on
November 1st. *

If you cannot attend, please feel free to spread the word. Let me know if
you have any questions and if you are able to attend.

In solidarity,

Frank

[LAAMN] OLA themed G.A. on police, prisons, Pershing Sq. Sat. Oct 20, 1 PM

2012-10-18 Thread part2001
There will be a Themed General Assembly on police, prisons, and the criminal
injustice system this Saturday, October 20th starting at 1:00 PM at Pershing
Square (Sixth and Olive), as a build-up towards the October 22nd national Day
of Action to stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a
Generation that OLA is participating in next Monday.

Presenters include Michael Novick (who moderates the Stop Police Abuse Now!
list on yahoogroups), and Hamid Khan of the Coalition to Stop LAPD Spying (at
2:00 PM). Others invited include the O22 Coalition, the Black Riders Liberation
Party, Jericho Amnesty Movement, and Bilal Ali. There will also be information
regarding the Agreement to End Hostilities inside the prisons, and the call for
an Occupy the Beat campaign from the CA prison hunger strikers at the
Corcoran SHU. Other issues of concern are the ballot measures in CA to amend
three strikes and end the death penalty. If you would like to participate or
present, contact Michael Novick at 323-901-4269, or email
antiracistaction...@yahoo.com.

Please forward this information, and let's build back up the Occupy L.A.
General Assembly and the themed GA's as tools of political action, discussion
and education.

Ballot Recommendations, Part II

Some Legislative Races; L.A. County Ballot Measures

For the most part, the critical state and national legislative races are
about Democrats versus Republicans. WHERE THAT IS THE CASE, VOTE FOR THE
DEMOCRAT! I say that even though you may not be happy with the Democrat who
represents you. But in partisan politics, numbers count. (Then find and
support a more Progessive Democrat to run in the Primary against this
person). Every Congressional Democrat in the House of Representatives means
that Nancy Pelosi could become Speaker of the House instead of John Boehner.
That is an immense difference on critical issues of the budget, and all
domestic parts of the safety net. And it is very important to tax policy
and environmental matters.

In the Assembly, Democrats are approaching the 2/3 threshold which would
mean a possible tax reform that could reorganize the system to reflect that
California is now a service economy and not a manufacturing economy. Even
if that lofty goal is not achieved, every Democrat above 41 Democrats in the
Assembly means that good legislation has more places to look for supporting
votes. And the State Senate really is in the hunt for a 2/3 majority.
Ironically it is due to the fact that the Republican right wing and the
Liberals joined forces and, for better or for worse, took redistricting out
of the hands of the California legislature.

I only comment or make recommendations where I know the people and/or the
issues. So my not mentioning a race either means that I do not know enough
about it, or that it is a Democrat against a Republican, and the Democrat
gets my nod every time. However, there are a few Democrat vs. Democrat
run-offs, and in a few cases, I have a recommendation.

As always, if you have a different view on one or more recommendations
below, please feel free to let me know. I always learn from the exchange,
and occasionally change my recommendation.

Los Angeles County Ballot Measure: Summary—NO on Measure A; and

YES on Measures B and J

 Measure A: Advisory Vote Only

This measure asks the voter’s opinion on whether the Los Angeles County Tax
Assessor should be changed to an Appointed Office, instead of an Elected
Office. This is an Advisory Vote, which means that before those who want
the change act, they want to know the feeling of the people who would later
vote on an actual change—in other words, us.

I believe that the voters should continue to elect the Los Angeles County
Tax Assessor. That is because I do think that having the Board of
Supervisors make the appointment instead would make this important office
even more political than it already is. I personally believe that elections
are less corruptible than appointments, though both can be manipulated for
political purposes. This comes up now because of the allegations (no trials
yet; no convictions; but plenty of investigations) of the previous County
Tax Assessor. I will vote “NO” on Measure A.

MEASURE B: A COUNTY ORDINANCE:

If passed, this Measure will require a Los Angeles County health permit in
order to produce an “adult film” in Los Angeles County. It further would
require the use of condoms by “adult film” actors who have sexual
intercourse as part of the film. Violations of the ordinance are subject to
civil fines and criminal charges.

Though on the whole, I think this is a good idea. HIV/AIDS has diminished
in some populations, while it continues to grow in other sectors. But if
the sexual encounters are a part of incredibly profitable industry, that
industry can and should be required to protect the health of its employees.
I will vote “YES” on Measure B.

MEASURE J: LOS ANGELES COUNTY MTA

Currently, the sales tax in Los Angeles County includes a one-half cent tax
for the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Measure J would continue that ½
cent sales tax for an additional 30 years. If we are ever to get light and
heavy rail to relieve the traffic in most parts of Los Angeles County that
is grinding us to a daily standstill, we will need to pass this measure.
The only opposition seems to come from those who oppose all tax measures
that do not directly benefit them personally, and from those who oppose all
tax measures period. It is essential for movement of people, goods and
services in this county, that we pass Measure J. I will vote “YES” on
Measure J.

Los Angeles County District Attorney: I will vote for Jackie Lacey.

SELECTED STATE ASSEMBLY RACES:

AD 39: This is a Democrat vs. Democrat between two candidates that would
probably vote pretty much the same if elected. But one of them moved in
from Riverside County to run for the seat, and the other is Democrat Luis
Lopez who has lived and worked in this district for most of his

OPENING NIGHT - FILM LA PREMIERE

WILD HORSES RENEGADES

Director: James Kleinert

  http://img2.ymlp201.net/Artivist_wildhorse_5.jpg

November 1st • 8:00 PM

Barnsdall Theatre - 4800 Hollywood Blvd. LA, CA. 90027

Wild Horses Renegades • Director: James Kleinert

This is not just a film about wild horses; it is a film about what is
happening to our planet at the hands of corporate greed. Michael Blake, author
of Dances With Wolves.

Wild Horses Renegades features Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Viggo Mortensen,
Raoul Trujillo, Daryl Hannah, Dances with Wolves author Michael Blake, former
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, U.S. Congressmen Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), and
Pulitzer Prize winning author Scott N. Momaday. There is nothing more symbolic
of the freedoms of America than the wild horses that make their home in the
wide open spaces of the West. Under 'federal management', these horses and
their pristine environment are being devastated due to corporate interests in
mineral extraction and cattle grazing.

Both an animal advocacy and an environmental protection issue, the debate on
the failed management of American western federal lands, and the underlying
role of corporations, has become a growing national embarrassment. With
stunning vistas and interviews with notable contributors, Wild Horses
Renegades brings to light the people fighting to save these animals and our
environment from extinction.

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

Return to the Forest • Director: Patricia Sims

Narrated by William Shatner, Return to the Forest is the heartfelt story of
the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and its mission to return captive Asian
elephants back to the wild; saving them from abuse, exploitation, and
extinction.

American-Style Fascism

US elections are farcical and rigged.

by Stephen Lendman

On October 16, Hofstra University (Hempstead, NY) hosted the second
Obama/Romney charade. Demagogic blather again took center stage.
Ritualistic theater was featured. Grade F spectacle defines it.

Bombast substituted for substance. Vital facts about the state of the
nation and world were excluded. Viewers wasted two hours watching. What
they most need to know wasn't covered. Instead they were bombarded by
duplicity and indifference toward growing human needs.

Duopoly fascism in America excludes alternative voices. Third party
candidates are virtually shut out. Getting ballot access alone presents
enormous challenges. Major media coverage is denied or too little to
matter.

How many American know about other parties, let alone who represents them?
Major ones include the Libertarian Party, Constitution Party, Justice
Party, and Green Party.

Libertarian Party candidates Gary Johnson/Jim Gray were denied Michigan
and Oklahoma ballot access. Constitution Party candidates Virgil Goode/Jim
Clymer got on only 26 of 50 state ballots. Justice Party candidates Rocky
Anderson/Luis Rodriguez managed only 19.

Green Party candidates Jill Stein/Cheri Honkala were denied access on 12
state ballots. There's more. Alternate party candidates are excluded from
presidential debates. Just showing up to watch is hazardous.

Ralph Nader learned the hard way. In 2000, he was accosted and threatened
with arrest for trying. Having a valid auxiliary viewing room ticket
didn't matter. Nader sued and won partial vindication.

Doing so didn't erase the stain of America's farcical democracy. It exists
in name only. USA-style fascism comes wrapped in an American flag. It's
harsh like other versions but isn't discussed.

Only targeted victims feel its sting. Step out of line and become one of
them. On October 16, Green Party candidates learned firsthand.

Stein/Honkala's web site explained. It headlined Jill Stein and Cheri
Honkala arrested, call tonight's debate a mockumentary, saying:

Iron-fisted fascism showed up in Hempstead. Stein and Honkala were
forcibly prevented from entering the grounds of tonight's presidential
debate.

Corporate/party boss-run Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) members
exclude alternative voices. Money power operates secretly with no public
oversight. A sham process repeats each electoral cycle.

Real democracy is mocked. Discussion of major issues is excluded. Hardball
crackdowns target challengers.

Stein and Honkala were arrested by local police when they tried to enter
the grounds of Hofstra University. They remained in police custody for
hours.

At 2PM Tuesday, they walked with supporters toward Hofstra's town hall
venue.

There they were met by three ranks of police officers in uniform and
plainclothes. At this point, the Green Party candidates held an impromptu
press conference in which Dr. Stein called the CPD debate a
'mockumentary,' saying that, 'We are here to bring the courage of those
excluded from our politics to this mock debate, this mockery of
democracy.'
Both candidates turned and began walking towards the debate venue.
Police physically stopped them and pushed them back. They sat down and
were arrested.

They were charged with obstructing traffic. None was visible at the
time. CPD bosses call the shots. Cops don't represent ordinary people or
independent political candidates.

They serve money power. Hardball crackdowns prove it. Even independent
presidential candidates taste their harshness.

On October 17, Stein/Honkala's web site headlined Now free, Stein,
Honkala pledge ramp up fight for open debates, saying:

After spending eight hours handcuffed to a metal chair in a remote (Long
Island) police warehouse, they're free. Exercising democratic rights got
them accosted and arrested. That's how fascism works. Opposition isn't
tolerated.

On release, Stein

The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular
representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress
them.
- Karl Marx

Whenever I'd give a talk during 2008, I'd open up by presenting what I
called a
public service announcement and dutifully offer the crowd some of the
many, many reasons why you shouldn't vote for John McCain.
It went a little something like this:

Hes raised twice as much money from Wall Street as his opponent. He voted
for every Iraq war appropriation bill he faced. He refused to be
photographed with San Francisco's mayor for fear it'd be interpreted
that he supported gay marriage. He voted against single payer health
care. He supports the death penalty, the Israeli war machine, and the
fence on the U.S.-Mexican border. He was asked if there was anything
that happened during the Bush-Cheney years that the United States needs
to apologize for in terms of foreign policy? His response: “No, I dont
believe in the United States apologizing. He voted to confirm
Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State and to reauthorize the Patriot
Act. He (pause for effect)... oops. Sorry, I messed up. Those
are actually some of the many, many reasons you shouldn't vote for
Barack Obama. My bad... sometimes I just can't tell 'em apart.

This would be kinda funny, of course... if most of you didn't rush out and
vote for Mr. Yes We Can.

Fast-forward to 2012: The Pope of Hope has completed a first term that
surely has
Henry Kissinger green with envy, but yet the lesser evil mythology
endures. Thus, I have a request for those of you who challenge so much
about society but cant seem to bring yourselves to recognize the
two-party fraud: PLEASE DEFINE LESSER

#Occupy Evidence

To help you with this simple assignment, I've put together some study notes:
Romney surely did a lot of questionable shit in the past four years but he
didn't, for example, sign the NDAA, wage war on Libya without
congressional approval, start a covert drone war in Yemen, escalate the
CIA drone war in Pakistan, maintain a presence in Iraq, sharply escalate
the war in Afghanistan, and secretly deploy U.S. special forces to 75
countries.

Obama did all that so, technically, Mitt is easily the lesser of two evils.

Romney's very existence is proof positive that the dominant culture is a
virus
but he wasn't the one who signed the Patriot Act extension into law,
deported a modern-record 1.5 million immigrants, and continued Bush's
rendition program.
Once again, that would be the guy with his very own kill list and once
again, that would make Mitt the lesser evil -- by a mile.

Romney makes moronic statements about binders and Big Bird.
http://worldnewstrust.com/while-you-were-talking-about-big-bird-mickey-z
Obama makes jokes about deploying predator drones.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWKG6ZmgAX4

Mic Check: It's not Mitt who helped coordinate the federal and local
assault on
the Occupy movement. That was change the 1% can believe in... courtesy
of Barack Hussein Obama.

So yeah, please go ahead and define “lesser” for me.

#Occupy Urgency

I could go on and on -- and on and on and on -- or merely point you to
this catalog of Obamacrime -- but I know better by now.
http://stpeteforpeace.org/obama.html

The lesser evil crowd is still impervious to facts, immune to evidence,
and unmoved by reality; the lesser evil crowd still worships JFK and makes
excuses for Carter and Clinton; the lesser evil crowd still indulges in
what Glen Ford calls the psycho-babble of intentions; and the lesser evil
crowd still embraces reform (sic) because after all, change can't happen
overnight.
http://blackagendareport.com/content/why-barack-obama-more-effective-evil

Bearing all that in mind, I'll refrain from presenting more evidence and
instead ask the only serious question that remains for those who
genuinely care about the future of all life on the planet:

How much time do you think we have?

10/19: Tuesday night, did you hear the words peace or immediate
withdrawal? I didn't
Tuesday night during the Presidential debate neither candidate mentioned
the word peace nor did one of them promise to immediately bring our troops
home from Afghanistan. It’s amazing. With the majority of U.S. citizens and
even the NY Times who once supported the war calling for an immediate
withdrawal, both candidates have decided to ignore the demands of the average
American.

This is exactly why we need _your support_

  if we are going
to solve our economic woes, peace with an economy based on human needs and
justice for all members of our society must be part of the public
discourse. _Your support will make it possible for UFPJ_

  to continue
organizing to raise our voices, take a stand, and challenge the U.S. war
machine.

After the election, neither a President Obama nor Romney should believe it
is worth the political risk to start a new war with Iran, Syria or any
other nation. Whoever is president must end the
