Re: [lace] Card exchange

2008-01-09 Thread Dee Palin
I did not get my card in the exchange until last week, and immediately
emailed Alice and the lady who sent to me to say how beautiful it was. When
I last checked a picture of it had not been put on Jenny's site, and I still
do not know if the lady in question received mine, although I had posted it
at the end of November. Maybe people are so busy recovering from the
season's social round that they do not have time for anything else, but it
is such a shame.

Sue,
you are not the only one. I offered to make two cards but only

Those things happen and it happened to me for the second time and I
doubt that I'll join another exchange.

Ah, but I can't edit because I don't have, and don't want, a Google account
(to add to all the other accounts already have) so I don't get the File popup
menu. There's no point as I can't add or change anything as I only speak
English.

I might want to sort by any one of the columns though if I have a book in a
foreign language, which is why I'd want to download it.

If you can edit the spreadsheet (depends on the browser you use - it works

in
there you'll find Export to lots of file formats (text, Excel sheet, PDF

Hi everyone -

This has been an interesting thread, but I admit that my foggy brain is not
quite able to understand the advantage here...

I have a copy of the International Lace Dictionary (Spee, van den Kieboom,
Coene) 1998. It is far more comprehensive than the spread sheet, and of course
the terms can be searched through 16 languages. I don't quite understand the
advantage of the Google spreadsheet, unless it is meant to augment the Lace
Dictionary. (But so far, the words are all relatively basic...)

I do love the potential for adding and editing, and can see that there are
words in many languages which can have different connotations depending on how
they're used. The spreadsheet could possibly address these quirks. Should
there be a section on conjugations? (always my weakness!)

My hat is off to Jo and Achim for all the work they've been willing to do for
the rest of us!

Hi All

I have to admit that I have copied it onto my computer!! I haven't
got the advantage of the book that Clay has!! (I didn't even know one
existed until just now!!!) The first book I bought was written in
Dutch, fortunately an english translation came with it.

The spreadsheet is extremely useful to those of us who haven't 'been
making lace since forever' (I've only been making lace just over
12 months, and very part time at that!)

So, THANKS girls. You are BRILLIANT!!

Clay, the book you mention seems out of print. How about making the online
sheet less basic by using your sources? ;-)
I see lots of advantages: the internet is (or will be soon) available
anywhere, anytime (thinking of e.g the iPhone), so you dont have to take a
book with you. And you don't have to buy it in the first place. It will
never be outdated, but continuously revised and kept up to date.

I wish there was a sheet like this for e.g. Brenda's thread sizes ... in
fact I think of scanning it and put it into a spreadsheet (for personal use
only, of course).

Best, Achim.

Brenda's book is already magnificent isn't it?
Rather than add more to make the little volume larger, why not do this:

I keep a notebook of working sheets such as the glossary and other goodies
near by working area at all times. Hole punch and plastic sleeves make it
last even longer because in plastic sleeves I resist the urge to mark on the
pages. It has ideas for enlarging or reducing patterns from arachnids, thread
hints, stitch techniques, as well as other suggestions I feel I just cannot
live without.

It also hold Project sheets, that tell what I have made and how, photos and
who I gave the finished project to. Those are moved to a final notebook for
lace projects.

Notebook leans again the leg of my light table.

Hi Agnes and everyone

I think that would be the price per package.
In the Lee Valley catalogue, they are item EV140; 6 for CAD16.50. They are
made of silicone, can be reused many times, can go in the freezer, microwave
or oven - heat resistant to 357 C. (675 F) that should be hotter than any
bobbin needs to be (eek). Each cord is 13 inches long; they can be linked
together. Although they are for trussing food, they would be interesting for
bundling bobbins!

Thinking in terms of portability - e.g. having the reference at hand when at

I don't have one, don't know how they work, but think there might be

I was happy with receiving a card before Christmas from

airmail at the beginning of December took until now to get to
her. This is the first time I have had a problem and I have
taken part in the exchange for many years. I paid for it to
go airmail, although here now everything overseas is sent at
Priority mail prices, supposedly there is no such thing as airmail
in the US now. Alessandra will have to do what I do,
that is, next Christmas, display all the lace cards she has.
Mine usually come out every year and make a nice display.

[lace] Card Exchange

2008-01-09 Thread Sue Fink
Hi all,

I did not take part in the card exchange, but would ask you not to be too
quick to blame your partners if the cards are late in arriving as the mail
does sometimes take a very long time to arrive in distant parts at this time
of the year. My daughter sent me an envelope on the last day of air mailing
from England to New Zealand and it has only just arrived!!!

Also this is the time of year when Kiwis and Aussies are away on holidays at
the beach etc., and some will only just be getting home again ready for work
this week!

Just a word of warning from a Kiwi in the sun to your poor people in colder
climes.

Sincerely,

The class is being held just before Easter so I thought a half stitch egg would
be a simple project. I haven't written up the pattern yet but thought you
might like the idea for your beginners. It uses only 5 pair.

Hi Jane -

Yes, this could be part of the problem. I suggest that you find a wooden
skewer which would be long enough to reach the bottom of the bottle, and dip it
all the way to the bottom. If you reach a spongy mass at the bottom, it may
have permanently settled there. Or... it may not be so permanent, but just
need a thorough mix - with the skewer as an aid.

This is wonderful stuff, and it's too expensive (in my opinion) to waste! So
I'd try stirring it up a bit before giving up.

 Dear Spiders,

There just might be a cause for my unhappiness with the bottle of starch I
have and want to know if any of you might have experienced a change in the
quality of your starch with temperature changes. This bottle accompanied me
 to
the desert where it did get very hot for a number of days while we were
traveling. Could this heat, then cooling cycle for 6 weeks have done in my
 starch?

Not just in the distant parts, either :)

My best-ever mailing around Christmas story was this:
Some years ago, in the first week of December, I sent off my renewal
for OIDFA. The US OIDFA treasurer has a foreign-sounding first name and
surname. She lives in California, in a town with a Spanish name, on a
street ditto. So, I send off the letter, with CA and the zipcode and
think nothink of it.

5 weeks later, I get my letter back, looking rather beat up for its
long travels and with two official stamps. One says: the names of
foreign couintries should not be abbreviated, but spelled out in full.
The second stamp builds on the first: postage insufficient for
overseas mailing.

During the holiday period, a lot of extra folk -- only partly trained
-- are hired by the PO to help with the holiday overload. So, someone
saw a foreign-looking name of the addressee, and the street and the
town, then missed the fact that CA (especially in conjunction with the
correct zipcode) is an abbreviation not for, say, Colombia, but for
California... And off the letter went, on some crazy wild goose chase
:)

Come Christmas time, you never know where or when your missive is going
to land. 8 times out of 10, the PO will deliver just fine. But, once in
a while...
