[lace] Unwritten Rules - Spangling

2010-09-18 Thread David C COLLYER

Dear Friends,

As I spangles a few more pairs tonight I recalled that my method was
not how I was taught. Over the years I've tried wire (eventually
breaks); fishing line (same); and double threading through one way
and back the other: all of which took ages to do and I hated it.

So a few years back I bought some of that beading thread from the
embroidery shop: it's quite sturdy and has a slight waxy feel to it.
Nowadays, I thread the beads in order on a single thickness of this
thread; then the bobbin; finally I secure it with a reef knot and dab
a tiny bit of Fray Stop (or Fray Check) on the knot. With constant
use, none of these have broken yet.

Of course if you use Continental bobbins this does not concern you.

And the weaver pair threads broke--both of them, right at the point
of the sewing.

I still have that little scrap of Honiton, and am concentrating on
my Flanders!!

You're telling us that there was no way to fix it - h.
No chance of using a pin to undo a couple of passes then something
like Hackle Pliers to tie tiny knots on the wrong side. I think I
would have tried something like that after all the work involved.

Oh Claire
While sewing the flower on to the band trying to push the needle
through a stiff piece of fabric I managed to force the eye of the
needle completely inside the top of my finger right alongside the
nail. Ow ow ow!

Nail beds are the pits for that sort of thing - and the pain seems to
last for days.

Sorry

Now this one had me sitting up straight and paying attention. I have a
growing pile of broken spangles and a decreasing number of bobbins for use
and dont enjoy the process either, so I think this is something I really
must try,

Thank you David, hope your finger is not hurting now.

It's pretty dirty. Does anyone know how I can clean it without removing it

David,

Yup, I could have fixed it once I got home (certainly not in the 15 minutes
left
in class), but I was too much of a wimp at that time to try. I don't think I
even had reverse forceps yet, much less hackle pliers.

Now I'd rather start a fresh piece and keep this one as a souvenir!

[lace] thread sizes and pricking

2010-09-18 Thread Sue
I have just found a nice little motif pattern I want to make for my Mum and
the pattern quotes madeira tanne 50 (which is 39 wraps and is 2Z) in
Brenda's book. I want to use my gutterman silk which says it is 27 wraps and
3Z). Would it be sensible to print the pattern out slightly bigger for the
silk and if so by how much.Time is a little short now for me to have
time to make some samples to see which ones best, so I hope you lovely
spiders will come to my aid here.

Excuse any missing letters, my normal computer is currently sick and this
laptop and I are not yet pals.

[lace] Accidents

2010-09-18 Thread Alex Stillwell
Dear Arachnids

I think we have all found the wrong end of a pin at some time, I ceertainly
have.

Having cut off many pairs of bobbins that should have remained in use I now
always leave at least 6 inches (15 cms) of thread when I cut off a pair. Then
if I find I have made a blunder, I can tie bobbins on the ends and continue
making and deal with the knots when I meet them.

Happy lacemaking

I'd recommend vacuuming. But first lay some window screen, or plastic canvas
on top, then vacuum. The screening will avoid damaging the embroidery.

[lace] accidents

2010-09-18 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Oh dear! Been there, done that!!!

Not only have I pressed on the wrong end of a pin , and run the eye end of a
needle into my finger, but I have also stitched myself to some fabric!
Ouch!!

Re broken ends in lace - I don't do much Honiton, as I find it too fine and
fiddley!, but I did a nice flower, worked the fillings, and knotted off, and
cut the threads. - except I cut a couple too close, - and cut the knots!!
Grrr!!!
I had to undo the whole section of filling, and re-work it - leaving
whiskers on the knots this time! Better than being too close to the knot!!

I think your way, David, - extra twists here or there, or omitting them
gives me the look I want, which is the important thing. After all, that was
the traditional way - make it work, and get it to look how it should.
There were not any books to tell them how to make the lace, they just made
it up themselves as they went along.

I do all sorts of things that would make a Purist shudder, - but if it means
I get the look I want, - then that is OK with me. I think we all get too
bogged down with rules, etc.

Re: [lace] Unwritten Rules - Spangling

2010-09-18 Thread robinlace
I'm very fond of the beauty of Midlands bobbins and their spangles, even though
I now mostly use Swiss or International bobbins (Midlands are too hard to pick
up off a flat block pillow). But I have lots and lots of Midlands. I love the
pretty beads for spangles, but I hate the spangle flopping around when I use
the bobbin.

When I spangle, I bring both ends of the wire through the bobbin's hole
(opposite directions), pull the strands to the same side of the bobbin and
twist them together. I cut the extra wire off and push the twist against the
bobbin alongside the wire. This gets the ends out of the way and keeps the
spangle rigid. Certainly not any of the taught methods of spangling.

David, beading thread sounds like a great idea for those that don't mind floppy
spangles. Most beading threads (including Nymo, the slick-feeling stuff) are
nylon or other meltable synthetic. The bead stores (at least in the US) sell a
device for cauterizing the thread while cutting it off. It's battery
operated, a rapidly-heated wire that sticks out. You might be able to use
something like that to finish your bead-thread spangles, instead of glue. Just
a thought.
