Apparently there was a Facebook page, but many of us have no desire to have anything to do with Facebook. As far as I and many others were concerned Ruth Bean had stopped publishing anything. If he has sold the business, again who knows the business has been sold and whether or not any books are in print? There doesn't appear to be any information on the web - I suppose it's on Facebook. [lace] Lace guild calendar answer
Funny how I am checking my email this morning and I see the discussion about Miss Chamber's mat. Was miss chamber's mat the answer to the calendar completion? That is quite a coindence since I was just talking about the mat last night on the phone with my girlfriend. So now that there is a discussion about the mat pattern I was wondering if there was more than the pattern itself published. Is there a book on how to do the mat.? Anybody on here have miss chamber's mat and can describe the old publishing of the pattern? I thought I had the pattern. Have had it for years..now am wondering about it. Re: [lace] Flickr account
David, one problem with Facebook is that not everyone subscribes, and many of us who do only post very little. There is a lot of concern about how much information is gathered and who can see it. A third concern is that after only a short time, the picture you posted is *way* down the queue and difficult to find unless the searcher knows specifically how to look for it. Having said that, there is no reason you couldn't set up a group as you suggest, and see if it works! The Flickr account is still there for those who like it. RE: [lace] Miss Channer's mat
Don't think that just sending them emails will necessarily get them to publish something, specially not if it is only a single pattern. A few years ago we had a petition in to Burda with lots of signatures for them to republish the Herbert Niebling lace knitting patterns that they were sitting on, only to be told it was not worth it since there were not enough lace knitters that would be purchasing them. At least Buchverlag fuer die Frau did republish a lot of theirs, but Burda refused. Considering that the current company publishing the Ruth Bean books doesn't really have much in craft books (only 72, and only 6 on lace, 2 of which are historical), it doesn't seem likely they will publish only 1 pattern. Guess I'll just have to keep dreaming, and hope that maybe I'll find it in a garage sale or on ebay. [lace] Miss Channer's Mat, by David, on Julian's site
Julian Jefferson, are you still on Arachne? In reading all the Channer correspondence, I wondered why no one remembered we were able to see David's mat while it was in progress. My brain cells are old, but not that decrepit. If you go to our Arachne archives and put Miss Channer's Mat in the search box at the top, the first entry (this morning) refers to this set of David's pictures, and is dated February 19, 2009. However, an attempt to see them did not work for me. David? Do you know where the pictures at various stages of making are - at the present time? Have we lost track of Julian? http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html Anyone seriously interested in Miss Channer's mat may want to review the archived correspondence of the past few years that is already in our files. Re: [lace] Flickr account
The issue with Facebook is this: - a closed group restricts access to the pages so that only those people subscribed to the page and give access by the chosen moderators have access to the pictures. Then, as has been said, if you just post a picture it can disappear requiring hours of searching to find it as it it harder to crate albums of photos in Groups - if you set Arachne up as an entity rather than a group then pictures and all posting become public domain which some people don't want as it means their work and posts go public in the Internet and appear in google image searches. Think of groups being like a forum and the lace guild page as an entity being like a page of a film star. The hubby had a suggestion that would work within the spirit of the copyright laws. If some one owns a copy of the pattern, they could 'give' it to their local lace Groups's library on semi permanent loan but have it reside at their house for 'insurance' purposes. [lace] Miss Channer's mat
As I understand it, there was a photo/picture of the original mat in In the Cause of English Lace by Catherime Channer and Anne Buck. Catherine Channer died in 1949, so under UK copyright law the original pricking, assuming she did it, would be out of copyright in 2019, 70 years after the author's death. But does anyone know where it is? The pricking published by Ruth Bean was reconstructed for them by Patricia Bury, and Ruth Bean owns the copyright to this version of the pricking. [lace] Leonard's Lace - Jabot or Shirt Frill?
Dear Leonard, Would a cravat-style jabot be appropriate for banquets at OIDFA Congresses? If yes, it seems to me that you would receive a respectable amount of attention for your efforts. At OIDFA Congresses throughout Europe, you have been featured in the local media. They find the fact that a man makes lace to be a unique subject for news coverage. OIDFA members appreciate publicity. Your interviews are informed, and you represent lace very well. A shirt with lace attached would need more laundering, resulting in wear-and-tear, than a jabot that can be removed and cleaned only when absolutely necessary. The smaller accessory (square with lace attached) would be easier to clean, press, and pack in a suitcase. The reason many old lace-trimmed garments have suffered damage is because people have been hurried when pressing; so hurried that the point of an iron was often thrust through a lace opening and ripped the lace. In fashions for women, there are blouses that feature jabots, so this is of interest to all. You described how the lace yardage is to be attached to a square of fabric. Can someone on Arachne recommend a resource illustrating the zig-zag means of attaching lace edging to a square of cloth? This would be nice for people with a lot of lace yardage to be assigned to a good use. I am reminded of Canadians who belong to the Five Metre Club. For those not familiar with this honor - members receive recognition for this accomplishment in the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 1/2/2014 6:28:50 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, leonard...@yahoo.com writes: Lace for a jabot - a yard/metre of narrow edging to be mounted zig-zag up a square of cloth, covering it, for a man's cravat-style jabot. It needed a neat beginning, designed under guidance, but part way through, I dared to suggest that if I did use it as intended, it might be worn once or twice at lace events, but that is all, while two half yard lengths could be used as frills down the front of a dress shirt, and would get more use. The first half was completed, it must be before 2006, and I have just got round to starting the second side. Re: [lace] Miss Channer's mat
A picture of the original mat appeared in Miss Channers book 'Practical Lacemaking' published in 1928. Worked by a student at the Bedford Technical Institute. Design by C.C. Channer. In the folder published by Ruth it says Original design by Catherine C. Channer, worked by Mrs Dixon, of Clapham, Bedford, c1926. Now in the collection of the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford. For those dreaming of making the mat Pat Bury estimated that about 250 pairs of bobbins would be needed, she used 100/3 Brok and No 16 Coton a Broder for the gimps. When I made the mat I adapted the pricking as I felt the half stitch areas with the overlaid leaves were not (IMO) true Bucks Point, so I replaced them with honeycomb and cloth with tallies. Yes, I can feel Miss Channer turning in her grave (which I have visited in Clapham churchyard). [lace] The beautiful Miss Channer's mat
Jeri and others, I do remember years ago of David working on this mat. It was beautiful. To me owrking on that pattern is theultimate accomplishment in Bucks Point lacing. I do have the pattern and I have made some lace since I getting the pattern so I thought, um...maybe I could tackle it now...my eyes crossed when looking at the pricking. I don't know if my brain has learned enough lace making to make it or not. And true as someone said ...there is no working diagram for it. But I might have to throw every kind of bobbin I own at it...continentals,Midlands,my squares...and even my hook bobbins of alumium my husband made for me years ago. Then too I don't think my pillow is big enough which means I would have to move my lace up the pillow...my , oh my..now my circuits are crossing in my brain..but it is such a beautiful piece of lace and even though I did Jean Leader's thistle bookmark in black...I would have to do this one in traditonal white. I have had problems with my messages bouncing back to me from Arachne today. The messages coming back from Mail Daemon devil if you know what I mean. Is anyone else having difficulty with mail bouncing from Arachne besides me. The bounce messages also say some thing about spam bot or something like that. Lets hope this message gets to the list. Maybe it was a diferent lace pattern. I will have to look later on...but you could be right about it being an handkerchief edging. RE: [lace] The beautiful Miss Channer's mat
Sherry, we started the conversation because someone asked where they could get the pricking! The mere mention of Miss Channer's mat on this list always sparks a long conversation involving publishers rights to decide what they'll sink their money into, the availability of patterns and books, copyright etc., etc., etc. (VBG) Ruth Budge (Sydney, Australia) -Original Message- From: owner-l...@arachne.com [mailto:owner-l...@arachne.com] On Behalf Of Celtic Dream Weaver Sent: Saturday, 4 January 2014 9:03 AM To: arachne lacing Subject: [lace] The beautiful Miss Channer's mat Lastly...why did we start a convo on Miss Channer's Mat. [lace] zig zag attachment of lace?
Hello All! For Jeri Leonard--are you referring to herringbone stitch? Herringbone is my favorite decorative embroidery stitch, but I had no idea that it had so many variations (36 counting) or applications until I did some research for an EGA program last summer. Herringbone is used to hem skirts (especially knits) attach labels in garments because it is somewhat flexible. From that, I would extrapolate that it would work well for attaching lace to any item that drapes or would be stressed from time to time. Just my 2c worth from the embroidery corner. [lace] spam bot
Yes to Sherry's query--my mail has been returned on several occasions with the dreaded spam bot notation. The situation usually clears up in a few days. Gremlins, gremlins. The last time it happened, I tried to unsubscribe resubscribe with a different email address but that didn't work because Arachne wouldn't accept its own passcode. Finally gave up waited a week, giving you all a welcome vacation from my usual commentaries. lol Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. On another matter, I borrowed the BF book from the library to my delight found several edgings to suit my mini roller pillow. Before the holidays I was on a mission to find some simple Skansk-like patterns for 6 pairs several of you sent help suggestions. I thought these, or the snake made with my glass bobbins, would make a cute program volunteered to demo at the library. Would you believe they have a knitting group don't want any more crafts?!? Besides, according to the reference librarian, nobody checks out the lace books. Today, when I tried to renew the BF book, there was a hold. Hmmm, is there another lacemaker in Palm Beach County? Re: [lace] Re: Chandler's Mat
Hmmm. Not to start an international copyright war, or anything, but - suppose somebody did make that mat from the photo, without using the pricking that Ruth Bean published. Would they be able to, say, make a hi-resolution scan of the mat that they made, and then either sell it or provide it to lacemakers for free, and have it all be perfectly legal? Just wondering. RE: [lace] Miss Channer's mat
Good luck!!! I got lucky and won a lottery that had that as a prize (think it was on this list many years ago) I wouldn't part with my pattern for all the tea in China and that goes for most people who have the pattern. I know it has been out of print since forever. But then, I did get lucky and maybe you will too. If your lucky someone who has it will offer to sell it to you or maybe even give it away. Re: [lace] Re: Chandler's Mat
Hello Susie and everyone I can add that the scan at any resolution can only be as clear as the image itself being scanned but should be ok to work on, and the image would then be available in magnified view on-screen for reference :) On another note, for those searching and/or waiting to own a copy of the pricking for Miss Channer's mat, there are some fine challenges to do in the meantime from the booklet of Floral Bucks Point patterns edited by Jean Leader. http://www.jeanleader.co.uk/publications/floralbuckspoint.html On Fri, Jan 3, 2014 at 8:50 PM, C Johnson cjohnson0...@comcast.net wrote: I was wondering - in regard to working from a picture on the pillow, wouldn't it be better to scan the picture at 300 dots per inch or better and then print from the picture -- Bev in Shirley BC, near Sooke on beautiful Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Lace8 Demo
I can't check the demo version without uninstalling and removing all traces of the full version from my computer, so I couldn't check what Ian had done about the help filesso last night, I pounced on him and asked him to double-check. He did sound very doubtful...I *thought* I'd put them in..but.. and all the time I was thinking Men! Why can't they follow through to the end of a job??I left him to check and let me know what he found and went to bed. Still haven't heard anything from him, so I was delighted to hear from Cearbhael that she'd found them!!
