[lace] Ebb'n'Flow
Hello everyone, I have just seen that there have been some questions about Jane Atkinson's exhibition Ebb'n'Flow. I had the good fortune and privilege to be at the opening and then at Pierre and Lauran's workshops and it was a wonderful experience. Jane's work has moved into a new and exciting direction and the exhibition is well worth seeing. I have put up two blog posts about it which you can find here: https://www.textilesupport.net/single-post/2018/10/16/Ebb-n-Flow-Part-1 and here https://www.textilesupport.net/single-post/2018/10/17/EbbnFlow I also sponsored Lace not Lace and am patiently waiting on an article by the Lace Fairy Godmother (Nancy Neff ;-) ) as I could not be there in person. I will share a link to the article once it is up so that others who could not be there in person can get a feel for the exhibition. Hello everyone, I just received a message from the incredibly talented Alicia Jane Boswell to let me know that two of the pieces from her "Delicate Perspective" collection are back on the market. [lace] Final Tours in Italy and Spain
Hello everyone, This is just a friendly reminder that 2017 will be the last year that I run my tours in Spain and Italy (except for a tour of lace in Central Italy which will be in April 2018 and will be online soon). [lace] Lace in Italy Tour 2017
Hello everyone, I wanted to let everyone know that bookings are open for next year's Lace in Italy Tour, during which we visit Milan, Genoa, Rapallo, Florence, Venice, Gandino (with their amazing lace collection!) and Varallo (to see puncetto). The tour will take place 18 September - 1 October 2017 and there are a limited number of places available. This will be the last time I will be running this tour as numerous other work and family commitments make it increasingly difficult to get away for long periods of time. It has been a lot of fun though and a real pleasure to visit these places with so many lovely lace makers. You can find out more information here: http://www.textilesupport.net/textile-tours Before I stop leading tours altogether I would also like to do a tour about lace in Central Italy: Umbria, Abruzzo and the Marches, as I have had several requests for this. I would like to organise this for the second half of April 2018 would like to get an idea of how many people would be interested in coming. The whole tour would have to be done by minibus as it is a difficult part of Italy to get around, so we would need between 10 and 15 people to run the tour. If anyone is interested please get in touch and I will put together an itinerary. [lace] Pellestrina
Hello Susan, Yes, the ploychrome laces are amazing! Unfortunately actual production for fashion on Pellestrina has ceased... there is some small-scale production on Burano for the bridal market, however, unlike Venice's velvet weavers, the lace makers have not been able to maintain an active relationship with the fashion world. The curious thing is that the skill and time required to make lace is no greater than that to weave velvet by hand (there are still 5 companies in Italy who do that). However, beyond technical skill there needs to be a relationship between designers, makers and industry to allow these crafts to survive. If you are interested I have a post about a Venetian velvet weaving workshop here: http://www.textilesupport.net/single-post/2016/07/15/Tradition-Fashion-in-Venice Best wishes, Angharad Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2016 20:33:46 -0400 From: Susan <hottl...@neo.rr.com> Subject: [lace] Pellistrina Thank you Angharad! Oh my, that elongated floral triangle is a tour de force. The shading reminds me of Sandi Woods Milanese class! Does the fashion industry in Italy source their lace from Pellistrina? I could see that on a coat or dress in a heartbeat. Hello everyone, This is just a friendly reminder that "early-bird" registration for this year's Doily Free Zone symposium closes on March 15. This year we are very lucky to have such an extraordinary line up of talented artists, designers and artisans working with handmade lace; this symposium really is a rare forum for dialogue about the future of the craft of lace making. Doily Free Zone 2016 will be held in Gandino which is also home to an extraordinary collection of early lace which will be open for study during the event. The symposium is open to all who are interested in new directions in lace making, those who wish to challenge the way they think about lace and to those who wish to protect and nurture lace making traditions into the future. Subject: Re: [lace] Facebook scams from Arachne list Hi all, I too have had problems with Facebook in recent months, it somehow dived automatically into my computer and fished out all the email adresses which have ever passed by my inbox! Very embarassing! I read an article in the Spanish press some weeks ago that was saying that this is the new spam, as it ie easier for spammers to infiltrate social networks than email now that email security has improved. Somehow I think that Facebook can unfortunately be somewhat spammy on its own as if you click on the wrong thing it just seems to take off on its own! Re: [lace] Re: Fiber Familiarity
Dear Devon, I have received a couple of private responses from people who agree with what I wrote, but not with responses to my questions, which I thank you for answering. I too began lace making with a couple of other little girls who gave up shortly after... so it seems it has always been a problem. There is a problem with the divide between artisans, designers, artists and the world of amateurs which in the case of lace is filled with very knowledgable people and many resources. There has to be better communication (particularly visual communication; no mobcaps!) and less judgement from all quarters... lace makers are not dowdy old ladies and artists/designers are not necessarily chic, fashionable and snobby. There are so many aspects of life that would be easier if we could get beyond setreotypes! As for off-loom techniques; it is a whole fascinating world and as a handbook there is nothing better than Noemi Speiser's Manual of Braiding, it contains an excellent introduction to braiding techniques including loop manipulation. When I am not teaching textile and costume history I have the rather curious role of teaching textile techniques which are neither industrial knitting or weaving; that means I am responsible for teaching dyeing, printing, embroidery and what I term alternative structures which includes lace as well as decorative braids, basketry techniques that are relevent to the design world and non-woven fabrics. It is an enormous amount of information to convey in a limited number of hours and I choose to teach the students how these techniques work at both a manual and industrial level and to simply be available if a student wishes to deepen their knowledge of a particular technique. In the end it is more important for my students to understand what is possible than to be able to complete all the work themselves. When I have groups of students at my school I begin with a sampler of different stitches to analyse the structural qualities and visual effects of each so that the students begin to build a vocabulary of stitches with which they will express their own ideas. Then I pass immediately to an analysis of how to construct individual moftifs and each student chooses a form and has to use their vocabulary to fill it in, it is a very free exercise of drawing with threads, from there I pass to techniques for joining such pieces together and in the second half of the course we look at the more complicated task of working the ground and motifs together. I have had very good results with this approach and in the coming years I hope that my students will begin to contribute to the various competitions that are around. Speaking of competitions it was very interesting to hear about the kind of work which has arrived for the Powerhouse competition and how many, even if the Powerhouse defenition of lace speaks of fabric and structure, still presented objects with lace patterns often realised with laser cutting... White stuff with holes in it! Must go for the moment - Have a good weekend, Angharad - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: Fiber Familiarity
. These pieces are worked by hand in India on large pegboards... now there is a fun idea for children! If I get one student every 2 or 3 years who is interested in bobbin lace I consider that a good average and do what I can to put them on the right track. Competitions like that of the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and others which force us to look at potential applications for our work, I hope, will be the way to bring the younger generations closer to this antique art. I had the extraordinary good fortune to study with Rosemary Shepherd and Thessy Schoenholzer Nichols, so I have been very spoilt and know just how beautiful bobbin lace can be.
