[lace] Lace teachers in/near Idyllwild CA or Long Beach CA

2020-10-08 Thread Clare Lewis
Hi all,

A friend of mine in CA is looking to try bobbin lace. Can anybody point me
at a possible teacher in the Idyllwild area or the Long Beach area?

I am looking at options at the moment, name and a contact email would be
great, then I can pass that on to my friend.

Many thanks,

[lace] Kopeck Spiders

2019-02-28 Thread Clare Lewis
I have added three more photos to Flickr showing a beautiful Russian Lace
rooster made by Jacqui Tinch from a design in Motieven in Kleur. They show
how colour can be used to great effect in Kopeck Spiders.
Jacqui has this to say about making Kopeck Spiders:

"Kopeck is the term we were taught when studying Russian lacemaking at the
Moscow Institute of Arts.

Normally the basic legs are put in by going straight across from one side
to the other, then along the edge to the next one - this makes a stronger
and less bulky centre than going into the centre and back out again. The
order needs to be carefully worked out before you start as you have to
finish at the correct place to re-enter the braid and continue around the
design.

When you do the last leg you plait only as far as the centre, pin two
threads very tightly to where the final plait will re-enter the braid and
use the threads as if they are a plait; because they are making a straight
line from the last sewing you did at the edge it is possible to get good
tension on this. Pins are not necessary in the centre as all the plaits
are crossing at roughly the same place.

Using the remaining pair, you do sewings under each bar in turn (in the
same manner that you would if you are doing a false plait, and always pull
the sewings towards the centre, particularly on the first round or two
where the plaits are being held all to the same centre crossing. The
bobbins naturally alternate with each other, ie the one which did the
sewing on leg 1 being the one which threads through the loop on the leg 2
and then does a sewing again on leg 3.

Because of this alternating, if you are working in colour you have the
choice of which colours to use for the kopeck. Assuming your plait was
worked in two colours (Arranged abba to give a pleasing barley twist effect
to the plait), you can pin out both colour a and work around with b, pin
out b and use a, or pin out one a and one b in which case you will have
alternating segments of each colour rather like windmill sails. You can
change the order as you work to make patterns by swopping threads when you
reach the two pinned out ones. Use a temporary pin to hold the last sewing
before the swop until it is supported by the next round of sewings.

When your kopeck is as large as you want it to be, put a temporary pin
tight into the right angle made by the pairs doing the sewings and the
pairs pinned out, rescue the pinned out pairs and plait to the edge pulling
the plait very tight for the first few stitches. The temporary pin will
hold the last round of sewings up tight to the centre."

I hope this helps anybody looking to use this method.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Jeri, I am no expert when it comes to Russian Lace, but the fillings are
worked at the same time as the tape; for each section of filling the tape
is worked until the pin hole that is the last point of contact between the
filling and the tape. The worker and nearside passive from the tape are
then used to work the filling before returning to the start point to
continue the tape. On the larger and more complicated fillings this can
involve an amount of false plaits and there are usually plaits running
along the side of the tape.

For a Kopek/Whirlpool/etc the two pairs would work a plait of half stitches
to the centre where a pin is placed, then out to the tape edge where a
sewing is made, along the side of the tape to the next point where a leg
starts, make a sewing, back to the centre and through to the tape (make a
sewing), along the side of the tape to the next leg (make a sewing) and so
on. When the pairs are leaving the tape to make the last two legs they are
plaited to the centre and a sewing is made through the entire crossing, one
of the pairs is then twisted up to the tape (should be where they started
from) and the other pair does the weaving of the Kopek/Whirlpool thing as
far as is required. this pair is then used to make a false plait with the
twisted thread of the other pair so they both end up at the start point and
then go on to continue the tape.

Hope that makes sense, there will be a short test later ;-)

Cheers

[lace] Re: CORRECTION: Kopek/Whirlpool filling is a Woven Spider's Web

2019-02-21 Thread Clare Lewis
I'm a bit confused by your email Jeri, are you saying that the Woven
Spider's Web is made with a needle? Kopek filling is made with a pair of
bobbins.

I don't know where the name Kopek filling comes from but I have only ever
seen the filling used in Russian Tape lace and it makes sense for the Kopek
name to have come from Russia. I have been told that Bridget Cook coined
the phrase Whirlpool filling when she wrote Russian Tape Lace but I don't
know if this is correct and if it is I don't know why she did that.

Hello all,

I went to the Ebb and Flow exhibition on Sunday, I loved it but there was
one problem, the exhibition is split between Walford Mill and the Priest's
House Museum in the centre of Wimborne Minster and the Priest's House is
not open on Sundays so I didn't get to see the part of the exhibition that
was there.

If you are travelling from a distance you would definitely want to visit
between Tuesday and Saturday to ensure you see everything. The mill is
closed on Mondays.

Hi Karen,

You asked "I will be in London on the last weekend of the exhibition and
hope
to somehow get there. Is it possible with public transport?'

Technically yes it is possible but you are looking at a 3 hour journey each
way on the Saturday according to Google.

Take the train from London Waterloo to Bournemouth or Poole and then get a
bus to Wimborne

Alternatively a Sunday journey will take around 4 hours each way.

You may also find that you are on a Rail Replacement Bus Service as Network
Rail tends to do repairs at the weekends.

Sorry to be so negative!

Further to Jane's email regarding The Lace Guild electronic membership,
e-Lace is not sent as a pdf, there is an e-members only section of the

I would echo Jane's call for patterns, articles, photos etc., etc.;
publications can't survive without them.

One area we do often have a problem with is items for the Young Lacemaker
magazine; while the readers may be young (mostly) they are not necessarily
beginners. More challenging patterns with a 'trendy' (or whatever the
current terminology is) theme and application are always welcome.

My great, great grandmother was a lacemaker; on the 1861 census she was
aged 20 and her trade was described thus - 'Farm labourer's daughter'. I
always thought this was because her parents were trying to make her look
like a good catch (i.e. 'our daughter doesn't have to work we have the
funds to keep her') but now I am wondering whether they were actually
trying to pretend she was not a drug addled whore.

I suppose that's better than the acquitted murderer allegedly on my

[lace] Fwd: Authentic Handmade Laces for Sale - England

2017-06-06 Thread Clare Lewis
Hello all,

Currently The Lace Guild has a number of lace collars and cuffs for sale,
donated by the estate of one of our volunteers, Pauline (who was
affectionately known as Auntie Wainwright for her marvellous efforts
running the second hand stall at Convention). These are predominately Beds
but there are a few Maltese as well

The collars and cuffs have been on their travels to Camarinas, Krakovany
and Dorset but will be back at The Hollies from mid-July. Please see the
website ( laceguild.org ) for opening times and how to find us.

The Hollies always has other items of lace and lace equipment for sale,
pre-loved items which have been donated, as well as new stock and you will
also be able to see the latest exhibition in the exhibition room while you
are there.

As an aside while you are at The Hollies it is worth popping up the road to
the Red House Glass Cone (about a quarter of a mile away) to see the glass
display, including what looks like a pair of billowing lace curtains which
are made of glass.

[lace] Lace Magazine

2017-05-11 Thread Clare Lewis
Thank you to everybody who has responded, we seem to have found a better
postal system as we have not had any reports of magazines going astray this
time.
Long may this continue :-)

Clare from Portsmouth (UK) but I'm actually in Kortrijk (Be) at the moment.

2017-05-01 Thread Clare Lewis
My apologies for the second email, unfortunately my original wasn't very
clear.

Can overseas members of The Lace Guild (the UK one) please let me know when
they receive their copy of Lace magazine.

Kind regards,

Clare in Portsmouth (UK)

Vice Chair, The Lace Guild.

[lace] Re: Lace magazine/ official email addresses

2017-05-01 Thread Clare Lewis
Hi Jane,

"I'm sure it would be lovely for the Guild to be able to afford time, money
and expertise to set up official accounts for those working outside The
Hollies"

I hope not, that would just be another address and password I'd have to
remember. This Luddite is happy with the way things are ;-)

Re: [lace] Lace magazine

2017-05-01 Thread Clare Lewis
Hello Jeri,

I am a member of the Executive Committee of the Lace Guild. If anybody
wants to contact the Exec Committee then holl...@laceguild.org is the best
way to do it as your question might be best answered by one of our paid
staff, somebody on the Museum's Committee or a member of Exec.

I hope that when I have been promoting the Guild it has been helpful to the
person I replied to (for example when somebody was looking for second hand
books).

The reason I asked people to let me know when they got their copy of Lace
was because I didn't think Arachneans wanted to get loads of messages from
people says 'Yes mine arrived on ' and it is easier to just hit [Reply]
to my post than remember to send an email to holl...@laceguild.org.

My email address is the one I use most and therefore the one I look at most
often, I am not in the process of collecting addresses, I have enough
clutter in my life already ;-)

Re: [lace] Books/ out of print books

2017-03-20 Thread Clare Lewis
Hi carrie,

You can email libr...@laceguild.org but be aware that Sara, the librarian,
works part time so you may not get a reply the same day.

On the library page of the Guild website there is a link to as pdf of
current s/h books for sale ( https://www.laceguild.org/museum/library.html
).

Clare, still in Portsmouth where it is even wetter and windier than last
time I posted.

Re: [lace] Books/ out of print books

2017-03-19 Thread Clare Lewis
At The Lace Guild we regularly get boxes of books sent to us by families
who are dealing with loved ones estates. If these are duplicates to ones we
already have in the library we sell them as second hand books.

This is a blatant advertising email because we have boxes and boxes of
books which we would love to get out there in the wild again. If you are
looking for a particular book it would certainly be worth dropping the
librarian an email to see if she can help.

Hello Liz,

I am glad you have got your copy. We are talking to the mailing house to
try and solve the delays.

First we need to pinpoint what is causing them...

2017-02-09 Thread Clare Lewis
I just got a response from Janice, unfortunately she did not take any
photos of the work in progress.

Now, who can we persuade to make the Flander's rose and take a WIP photo?

2017-02-08 Thread Clare Lewis
I'm glad you like the calendar but I should just point out that the
Flanders rose was designed by Janice Murphy (formerly Garside). I'll ask
her if she has a photo of the work in progress with all those bobbins.
