This is a nice Valentine or Star design, with 2 pages of instructions inside. It is exactly the same pattern, but selection of red threads emphasizes the heart, and selection of another color-way and different spaces results in a star. The entire issue's theme is Stars, and there are instructions for Stars in Filet, Tatting, and Bobbin laces. There is also a contemporary lace wedding dress, with an article by Arlene Cohen (an Arachne member). This is three pages, with lots of pictures to show how many personal symbols were used by Evelyn Exley Gant (state of Vermont) to make one-of-a-kind lace for cap sleeves and upper back and upper front bodice. Within the lace are the couple's initials, the date of the wedding, flowers, hearts, horseshoes, wedding rings, theatre masks and stage curtains. Would-be designers should note that she auditioned six different threads before selecting the right combination for the bobbin lace. If you have a copy of this IOLI Bulletin, I recommend you carefully read this article. It has much of merit to share, including the importance of friendship. The French claim it, and so do the English. I have 5 books written by various scholars on this subject (on the embroidery side of my library). There are many more, but this is enough for me to collect. There is also a just-published 2012 fictional account that takes place in England. Too spicy to lend or review. Why do today's authors think it is necessary to add these scenes to a story that is so fascinating it does not need this additional embroidered fiction? Referencing the Jan Messent book: She designed and stitched her imagined version of the missing 8 foot panel, which is published in The Bayeux Tapestry Embroiderers' Story. I believe it is on display at Bayeux. Jan, too, has imagined where it was made and by whom - in the text of her book. (The male scholars do not seem to have much knowledge of embroidery.) I, too, saw the Smithsonian photograph of the needlelace version while in Caen. It is incredible. Patsy, I think this may have been made in a atelier by many lacemakers trained in the same school, in where? Italy? France? America? I have some large (but not this large) needlelaces that seem to have been from ateliers. They were not signed, making it very difficult to trace. However, I do research on the story being illustrated, and other locations/mediums illustrating the same mythology (or whatever). Catherine, The fact that lace was rarely signed and dated has been a problem for scholars and museum personnel ever since large museums were established in the 19th and 20th centuries. Lace traveled, either legally or smuggled. Lace was often made as part laces - elements by different lacemakers (deliberately, so that they knew very little about the entire design and techniques). The concept of documentation would not have entered the minds of uneducated poor lacemakers or the agents who brought their laces to market. By the 19th C., lace made to be sold in department stores did bear labels. The owners usually removed them, never thinking that there would be provenance interest by subsequent owners. HI Sue, We are at the hands of the postal service when it comes to our magazines. I am not sure how it works out side of the US. Here magazines are considered 3 class mail so it sits in a bin there is room on the planes. First class has priority. Once it gets to the destination it can go through customs and they sit there until customs clears them. I have mailed magazines to Brazil and it has taken 4 months to get there. I think I could of walked there faster. To mail a magazine first class for overseas is at least 3 times the cost of the subscription. I wish I could give you a good suggestion but I have none. Is it many people posting? There seems to be some pulling of pictures from Facebook? Is it a Spanish lace organization/guild (don't know the name) running the blog? I am just fascinated with the variety of pictures - individual lace, pictures of lace days/gatherings, posters for such. If you haven't checked out this site, you must go see the bird posted on February 6th - I think it is Binche? I just got my issues of Twist and Cross. all Three look great can't wait to look at them better. Well worth the $53 dollars for all three back issues. On the lighter side with it in two languages I think I might learn a different languge. Happy Holidays to all. Re: [lace] St. Catherine, our Patron Saint - for Newbies
Thank you for list the sites. and to all the lacers out there. I will be lacing friday in honor of our Saint. My Saint Catherine look over all of us. Happy Thanksgiving to our everyone celebrating. From: jeria...@aol.com jeria...@aol.com To: lace@arachne.com Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2011 11:48 AM Subject: [lace] St. Catherine, our Patron Saint - for Newbies Dear Newbies, We have written extensively through the years about St. Catherine, the patron saint of lacemakers, whose day is next Friday, November 25th. There are local lace guilds who use this day as a special time for a gathering of lacemakers. The English custom is to serve Cattern Cakes. This year, the 25th is the day after the American Thanksgiving. This is a time when correspondence on Arachne drops to almost nothing, while our busy women are preparing family feasts or traveling to be with loved ones. Therefore, (for the time - next weekend - when you are not receiving much mail) I am giving you the address where you can read all about St. Catherine and the cake served in her memory: _http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html_ (http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html) At this site, search for: 1. St. Catherine's Day 2. Cattern Cake If long-time members of Arachne are celebrating St. Catherine, please share what kind of program you have planned or memories of this day, so our newbies may learn more about this old custom that we are dedicated to keeping. [lace] [LACE] pattern sharing helpful hint.
Hi All, I know we all like to share or download free patterns over the internet. I have noticed that they do not always come across to the scale sent. I have an idea that might help stop the madness. I began putting a 1 inch scale line on the pricking before sending so the recipient can tell if the pricking is to scale after printing. Thread size is great but not all off are experienced enough to tell if the scaling is correct. Just my thoughts I thought I would pass on. Re: [lace] to wash or not to wash?
I know this will not help you Vila, but it does bring up a good question on how we are going to use the lace we make. I was thinking of inserting some stripe lace onto a summer top to cover up a stain that I ware around causally. My husband does the wash (No he does not fold) and he pit everything into the washer and dryer unless I put it aside for hand washing. So it would have to pass his standard. I did a test to see what would happen with dmc cotton 12 the wash. I choose the cotton because the top is cotton. After doing a 8 inch test strip sample of the pattern then I measured it. Height and width. The srinkage was more heigth than width. Shrinkage was over 10% in heigth and around 8% in width. I was a little suprised that the shrinkage was not uniform. I tried ironing it out and it look ok but not as good as the pre washing. I thought of preshrinking my thread before hand. Have not tried it as of yet but will. Thinking it would be better than adjusting the pattern. Donna near Chicago where fall is showing its starting to come. From: vila v...@warpedandwonderful.com To: lace@arachne.com Sent: Monday, September 12, 2011 12:08 PM Subject: [lace] to wash or not to wash? Hello all I have a question about washing lace. As a weaver, I wash all of my woven pieces as part of the finishing process. Depending on the article this can be a gentle swish in the sink or a complete wash and dry cycle in by machine. Is it a common practice to wash a finished piece of lace or not? I can see some things never being washed, but other will probably need to be washed sooner or later. What brings up the question, is that I'm going to weave a piece of linen fabric for the center of the linen edging I did. The fabric will be be washed after weaving to be sure it doesn't shrink later and pucker the lace. I did gently wash the lace and it changed quite a bit. A good press will make it look better again, but I now wish I had not washed the lace and took my chances of puckering later. I recently got a plastic Christmas wreath storage bin. It looks like it would work great with a little modifications for storing and transporting a pillow with a project on it.
