[lace] Arachne Anniversary

2018-04-20 Thread lacel...@frontier.com
Back then, my DH wanted to update my computer experience so he set up a
computer just for me.  He sat me down and told me "type in something".  I
typed Bobbin Lace. Arachne was one of the first things to come up.  I checked
it out, subscribed, and am still here.  I was on the Digest to start with
because I could use the computer limited times.  It came over our business
phone line so I could use it early mornings or evenings.  After I got a phone
line of my own and the computer was changed to it, I signed up for the main
Lace List to get the emails more promptly.  Sometimes I post, and sometimes
I'm quiet.
It's been fun 'meeting' people on the list, and then sometimes meeting them in
person.  I've learned many things about lace, and hope I helped a few
beginners when they had a problem.
On another subject --I have three students who are so enthusiastic that I am
having to hustle to keep ahead of them.  The third month they all wanted
second pillows. They work ahead in the book between classes so I never know in
advance how far each has gotten.  One has requested to learn Russian for her
next lace. To top off these interesting class sessions, we meet in a home and
they feed me lunch before the lessons.  After the lessons they send me home
sometimes with eggs (they have chickens) and last time included a couple
bottles of wine.  The DH of one of them makes ice wines.  Yum.

Alice in Oregon -- where the rain is supposed to stop in a couple days and the
weather turn warm and sunny -- in the 70's.  A nice change from all the
rain.

I will always treasure the beautiful bookmark you made for me back around

I also met a woman, who is now one of my closest friends, through Arachne.
I think we have known each other for about 14 years. Ironically enough, at
the time she lived just a three minute drive from where I lived, but we had
to meet through an international lace forum!

Suffice to say that I can’t imagine my life without Arachne messages to

Arachne was a life saver for me as there was hardly anybody in Israel who
made lace at the time. I could ask for help and always got several answers.

I am not posting as much as I used to but I am reading every digest,

Keep up the good work and thank you to Avital who is moderating this list.

Re: [lace] Arachne Anniversary-history

2018-04-13 Thread robinlace
Hi, Devon and fellow listmembers

I just tuned into this thread. I joined Arachne sometime during its first
year. I remember when someone downloaded the membership list from 'the major',
and found we had reached a membership of 400! Most impressive, at the time.
For a number of years, a member made anniversary bobbins and shuttles.
Eventually it became too much of a burden and someone arranged for a bobbin
maker not on the list (different one each year) to do the job.

As the century close approached, we discussed doing a millenium lace exhibit.
It never got going. But Arachne '98 did. That was a face-to-face convention
that Pat Hallam and Margaret (I'm blanking on her last name) were willing to
put together. We met at the U of Nottingham, had classes (like IOLI
convention), a few vendors (different ones each evening), a tour of lace
activity in the city (a remember the machine-knitted lace factory very well),
and nightly raffles. Another thing we did was try to raise funds for Luton
museum to refurbish their famous Lace Dealer's Pattern Book. We held a raffle
among ourselves. As I remember, they didn't need our contribution by the time
we'd put it all together and I don't remember what the money went to. Maybe
just a donation to the museum? Someone else may chime in on this.

We discussed whether we should be called arachnids (I absolutely refuse to be
thought of as a spider!!), or arachneans. There was also a thread back
then about how many of us were in science or math, although I don't remember
gaming or coding coming up much.

Back then I was a constant contributor to the discussions. But life has gotten
too hectic lately--I admit I often delete many of the Arachne messages and I
rarely talk on the list any more, but thought I should put my 2 cents in on
this one. I feel like an old fogey sitting in my rocking chair reminiscing
about the "good old days" and chewing my gums.

I joined Arachne in late 1995 and made lots of friends throughout the world.
I even visited their homes in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and the UK.  It
is nice to put faces to names and is something we always do at our Arachne get
togethers at the IOLI convention.  I believe the first one was in Maryland
where I met Tamara.  We organized it in a local restaurant and I think we had
12 or 13 present. Restaurants are too small for us now and too hard to find in
another part of the country. Now we have had more than 30 attendees some years
and as we have a free raffle where people bring whatever they want to share,
we quite often have enough prizes for everyone to take a reminder home.
I have not heard from any local Arachne for the San Antonio get together. Has
anyone else got news for us about a meeting time and place?
I love the information that we can share and have taken part in the Christmas
Exchange for many years, trying to come up with a new pattern each year.

I was at an Arachne gathering at the Salt Lake City IOLI Convention and I
realized that many of the younger members were computer gamers and some of
the older members seem to have been part of the Dungeons and Dragons crowd. I
found myself wondering if the founding of Arachne had occurred because
lacemaking appeals to women with mathematical, scientific and coding
experience, and those women who were very computer knowledgeable started an
internet list about lacemaking as a result.

Re: [lace] Arachne Anniversary

2018-04-13 Thread Tregellas Family
I whole heartedly agree with everything Alice has said about Arachne,
especially Liz and Avital. I have made many friends around the globe
through this list as my husband makes aluminium bobbins though not on
such a large scale as he did before.

I was introduced to Arachne (after our son, who was in University at the
time and knew all about the internet and hence managed to tell his two
old folk what it was all about) by a friend who joined in the first
year, 1995. Lorraine contacted me and said that there was a lady in
Finland who wanted to know how to care for our aluminium bobbins. Well
that was a shock to both my DH and myself as we had no idea our bobbins
had travelled so far. Apparently the lady won them in a raffle.

So, keep up the good work of the longest list on e-mail on the internet
with regard to lacemaking in particular. I read most days but don't
always comment. I particularly enjoy Jeri's research articles which are
full of good sense especially in the archival parts.

I wonder if Tamara is still a member? And it was nice to see David C
mention Stormy Lee a while ago.

May we last for a long time yet.
Happy Lacemaking,

heavy rain shower since before Christmas and the ground is just so glad
of the drink, but we do need much more.

[lace] Arachne Anniversary

2018-04-13 Thread lacel...@frontier.com
I found Arachne just after it's first anniversary so I'm not quite a charter
member but it was soon after I started making lace.

The discussions gave me lots of good information and helped my lacemaking.
Then the group decided they wanted a conference so Arachne 98 was born. Thanks
to Pat and Margaret, we had 60 people from all over the world meet in
Nottingham for a week of fun and classes, including attending one of England's
large lace fairs. This sounded so interesting that I decided to attend. It was
my first trip off my continent.

A group of us met at the Victoria and Albert museum in London before the
conference. I think there were a couple dozen or more. We attended a lace
talk, and surprised the presenter. She was used to only 2 or 3 people at a
time. I even met a lacemaker who lives 30 miles from me who has since become a
good friend.

The Arachne conversations have covered an enormous range of topics. The
archives has much information for the person who wants to search a bit -- from
picots to tallies to Russian fillings, etc.

We have had up to 3000 members at times. I haven't seen a count for several
years so I don't know how many we are right now.

In the beginning, there was only one list. To separate the lace topics from
the other things, the Lace-Chat list was started. All non-lace topics were to
be directed there (recipes, grandkids, vacations). Each person can sign up for
either or both lists.

We had Secret Pals for six-month intervals. A non-identified gift was sent
once a month with the sender's name revealed in the last gift. We also had the
occasional ornament or bookmark exchange. Once we had a hanky (lace-edged, of
course) exchange. That was in '98 because I exchanged mine in Nottingham
instead of mailing it.

We all generally got along very well, but about twice a year someone would say
something that upset someone else, and there would be a short fuss. Liz, our
list owner, does not have time to monitor all that is said, so we got Avital to
be the Moderator, to step in when someone got testy. Most conversations are on
topic and positive. I think we may be one of the longest continuously active
lists on the internet.

Arachne has stimulated my lace interests and given me friends all around the
world. It has led me to Europe twice, with a third trip in the planning.

Happy Anniversary to Arachne -- and may it continue a long time. Thank you,
Liz Reynolds.

[lace] Arachne Anniversary

2018-04-12 Thread Helene Ulrich
On this special anniversary I would like to thank everyone for the
help and guidance they have given so many over the years.

If it was not for Arachne I would probably not have started my lace
making journey in the mid1990's -- long before Facebook. It is
through internet searches about lace making that I stumbled across
Arachne and though this group I was able to locate a teacher within a
reasonable distance to where I lived. Have made some wonderful
friends through this group -- some I have met in person and others
have only connected with through emails and/or Facebook.

Thank you to whoever conceived the idea, and a special "Thank You' to
Avital for moderating for us to make sure we don't get overheated
during disagreements.

You were definitely on the list by Passover of the year your son was

the group that hasn't a clue, but I think it was probably at most
12-13 years that I've been on Arachne. Even with my housekeeping
standards I can't imagine hanging on to old disposable diapers for
more a year or so! (And why? Babies don't grow backwards, so it wasn't
like they were going to fit him again)

[lace] Arachne anniversary, housekeeping

2009-04-12 Thread bev walker
Hi all
Has it really been 12 years since Liz started this list... I'm really glad
she left it open, that lacemakers could benefit exchanging discussion on
many topics of interest in a cooperative atmosphere. When it became
necessary she designated one of us as board administrator, thank you Avital
(who *volunteered*, as I recall, double thanks) ;)
There is some behind-the-scenes work to this, yes.
A note about the board software: it is 'Majordomo' a mailing list manager,
based on e-mail, and a process that is old by today's web environment. Even
so many user groups still rely on it.

The beauty of it, it still works.

I noticed a lot of messages lately are replies-to some several times over,
and the appended personal and list signatures are oft repeated. My free
advice for today: It is a good idea when replying directly, to check that
you aren't quoting heaps of unnecessary text ;)

It can be easy to miss the real message in all the quotation. For those on
lace-digest they receive 22K of accumulated messages, a nice read, but not
much fun when it is just one or two messages with quoted quotes and list
headers!

I knew that wasn't quite right, just wondered if anyone was reading
carefully vbg Probably Noelene thought the same v v bg

It was last year there was a brief discussion of a commem. bobbin for the
13th anniversary. A few came forward to say they would buy one if there was
one, one or two came forward to say they would sell one if there was
interest...another camp put forth the idea that we could each figure out our
own commemorative...and there it went. So I'm not mentioning the topic again
this year.

:D

2009-04-12 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Thanks Jane and Robin, 14 years it is, and I've been a member for 13 of
them.

It's a shame we don't have commemoratives any more, but it really is hard
work trying to organise it, so for the last couple of years I've made my
own, by writing on a plain bobbin with a micro tip pen, putting on a sticker
(I can't paint) and covering it all with clear nail polish.

That's what I thought too but, since maths has never been my best
friend -- not even in the arithmetics subcategory -- I just assumed
there was a trick to it that I never mastered. Or maybe something to do
with differences in international ways of calculating totals ...
