[lace] Crochet hooks
Following mention of the Japanese crochet hooks, I was talking to a neighbour who is an avid crocheter and coincidentally her daughter who lives in the USA had sent her a set of 6 different sized ones for Christmas - she'd been naughty and opened the package already. I tried one in place of the Clover hook I'm using in my current project, and didn't get on with it at all. As I said previously it depends on your hands. Just as there are various gadgets such as different-handled knives or jar openers especially designed for people with manual problems, they don't all suit everyone and you have to find the one which suits you. I'll stick with my Clover hooks. Jean in Poole, Dorset, UK - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Crochet hooks
I used to do fine crochet a lot - long before I discovered bobbin lace. When I developed rheumatoid arthritis I found I couldn't do it any more because I couldn't hold the fine shaft of the hook and also couldn't keep the hook from turning the wrong way up - probably because of not being able to hold the hook properly. Then I saw the Clover soft touch hooks which have a flat shaft with a soft pad inset. Rather than go out and buy something I still couldn't use, I cut a small rectangular piece of etherfoam and pushed the shaft into it - a bit like sewing up, along, down - to see if it would make any difference. It did. So I then invested in several Clover soft touch hooks of different sizes and am happily crocheting again. There are now a few other companies making hooks of a similar design as well as what I consider to be hideous thick, round-shafted plastic ones, which I don't think would work as well because its the flat section which helps keep the hook in the right position in the fingers. Besides which the hook can't be made small enough in plastic. This type of hook would also probably help those who have crocheted with thicker yarns and are having a bit of difficulty changing to very thin threads. Re: [lace] Crochet hooks
Hi My mother was very dubious when I bought her one of the Clover soft touch crochet hook, saying she was quite happy with her usual one. However a couple of weeks later she couldn't stop singing it's praises. Not only is it easy to hold but the thread slips nicely on the shaft, I would recommend it to everyone with or without arthritis. The shanks of the Japanese hooks seem to be round and uniform in width down the length with a flattened bit. The clover ones get narrower towards the end and are flat down the whole length. It probably depends on your hands which type would suit best. The flatness of the Clover hooks is what enable me to crochet again so I don't think I would thrown them away in favour of the Japanese ones. I have only ever crocheted with wool or with a no 20 crochet cotton for which I use a 1.25mm crochet hook. Does anyone know where there is a guide as to what hook size to use with which thread? I'm pretty sure I've got a print out of one... I'll hunt it out and bring it with me on Saturday - I'll be on Stand D2. Basically, you choose the hook which the thread sits comfortably in - not too loose and not so tight it doesn't fit in - but it does give you a size or so either way. I've been making a fillet crochet hankie edging from Anna since 1991 (the acorn edging if anyone remembers it, with very slow progress!) using Special Dentelles 80 and a 0.75 hook - the hardest thing with the change to cotton has been getting the tension right. Re: [lace] Crochet hooks
I just find a hook that the thread fits in. I don't remember the sizes. Someone will probably come up with a chart on the net somewhere. I wanted to comment that Perle cotton tends to be loosely twisted and soft. It will split easily. You will find the crocheting going better with tightly twisted threads. They will fit in the hook hollow better and slide into place, and hold their shape. I recently started some crocheting after 20 or more years of not doing it. The hardest part was getting an even tension, but with some practice and perseverance I found myself doing acceptable (to me) results. RE: [lace] Crochet hooks
Finding a hook that the thread fits in is a good start. After that, if you are serious, try a size bigger and a size smaller. People's tension varies. This is a good idea even if you find a chart. About crocheting with lace threads. Again you may need to actually do a small sample with the various threads. Despite the loose twist I have good results with perle thread However I found some of the very fine thread sold for bobbin lace unsatisfactory - almost impossible to crochet because of its gentle twist. It depends on how you want your lace to look too. The cabled 2S/3Z threads such as Cordonnet special or the old Coats Mercer crochet make a firm harsh lace with the individual threads standing out. The softer Cebelia or Fincrochet which are not cabled, give a much softer lace with the threads almost blending into each other. Re: [lace] Crochet hooks
Most of the replies have answered you question regarding hook size for threads. I've crocheted everything from mohair through all the different wool types, silks, synthetics and all types of cotton. The specifically produced crochet cotton gives the best results, as well as the tatting threads. All types of cotton should work well but I must admit that I have only gone no finer than the 100 Coates Mercer crocheting cotton. I feel that linen may be a bit too stiff to work well. Silk is great!!! but only for shawls a and soft draping things I have not tried the metallics as yet. Over Christmas my Mother-in-law gave me a large number of crochet hooks that had belonged to her mother. Among them are two hooks that are marked Size H USA and Size K USA. On the other side is Boye. Mother-in-law gave me a large number of crochet hooks that had belonged to her mother... two hooks that are marked Size H USA and Size K USA. On the other side is Boye... Liz *** Steel hooks are numbered (for threads), and there is an overlap (of about 3 sizes) where the aluminum hooks (for yarn) begin and are lettered. The larger aluminum hooks begin at B, and end now, quite large as super bulky yarns are popular. The newer aluminum hooks have a letter and a number to denote them (the old ones did not), as we move to international trade and internet communication. The H is a 5. metric, 8 USA, 6 Canada. The K is a 6.5 metric, 10.5 US, and 3 Canada. How is that for confusing? :-) On the small crochet hook subject, it is difficult to find the finer 14,15,16 now. I typically find them where lace is prevalent (from lace to lace knitting), and beading focused stores. For a long time, it was almost impossible to find a 14, and in the old days, it came with a steel cap as it easily punctured the skin. I liked the steel cap Some small hooks come now as knit pickers for pulling snags to the backs of knits. One source in the US that comes to mind, is Beadwrangler, for small sized hooks, and is an online source. Many state you can't find them anymore, but they are out there! [lace] crochet hooks in size 16 and patterns to go with them
hello lace members, i just ordered some crochet hooks in sizes 11/12,12,13/14,,14,15, and 16 from the needle point joint (i think thats the correct name of the company), and i started a crochet project in size 50 thread with the size 12 hook. it is going along fine. i was really happy to find the smaller size needles. you cant find those sizes at walmart. i was a little disappointed that the size 11 and 13 couldn't be bought unless they were in half sizes or between sizes, but i am looking for another 11 and 13 that comes exactly as it is, and i hope i will find it. does anyone know of any crochet patterns that are available for crochet in the smaller sizes, and especially the size 16? crochet lace is hard to find in that size. i know any pattern can be adjusted by using the correct size needle with the correct size thread, but for collar and cuff patterns it would require a specified pattern. i am especially looking for collars, cuffs, gloves, purses, and any lacy wearable pattern. i don't want filet crochet patterns that are made by using blocks. a lot of foreign countries around the world, especially in europe and in russian countries have patterns or pattern companies. i have seen many of the crochetted lace items from there, and i was hoping to find some addresses where i might be able to write to for them. if anyone has heard of such a company please write. thank you. = from susan in tennessee,u.s.a. __ Do you Yahoo!?
