My travel pillow has an apron of about 17 inches using the centre flap and both sides of the box shape. I do lay some of the bobbins off the edge of the gap between the front and the back, but might be tempted to try making a bib shaped thing to lay over it all and connect the two, as some places I might use the pillow I may struggle using it this way. I will certainly have to consider the sizes of patterns worked on this, leaving the better and wider strips for the big block pillow. I dont demonstrate at all, but do like to take lace to make while out and about on trips with our trailer caravan, which was why we invested in this pillow. I have noticed that I tend to keep the leashes a bit longer than my norm, as it just felt right and I am using the childrens (curly pipecleaner type things) to hold the bobbins in groups and out of the way. Sue T, thank you for all help. I am using a homemade block pillow at the moment which is about 24 inches wide, It is a D shape with moveable blocks down the middle. I made it to go in a suitcase. I have 22 pair of bobbins for a buckspoint pattern I designed, which is also called Alice, after my deceased MIL. I probably have about 3 inches space on either side of my bobbins on the apron and it is very comfortable, so I imagine if it were 18 inches, it would still be okay. I like leashes of at least 6 inches from the pins to the top of my midlands bobbins. Don't have a tape measure here so I used a dollar bill which is about 6 wide. Hi Sue and Arachnids, Usually I use stitch holders -preferably the straight ones with a spring- through the spangles to keep my bobbins in groups and in order if I am using Midland type bobbins. I use crocheted lengths for continental bobbins. A row of chain followed by a row of doubles (trebles in the States) made fairly loosely so as to have some give. You can then pop the thicker tail-end through to hold them in place. Both ways the groups can then be pinned to the pillow. I also have used the stitch holders, but have recently found these craft things (still cant remember what they are called:-) are kinder on my spangles and also I can take a pair from either end where the stitch holders had to be emptied from one direction only. I thought that when I saw another lady using them:-) I have bought quite a few of the stitch holders and also bought a couple of the wooden things with an elastic band to hook over each end and lay over the bobbins, but didn't like those. I use the wooden slats because I nearly always use continental bobbins. The wooden slats are great for stacking piles of continental bobbins out of the way for a Flanders piece, for instance. They aren't so good for transporting the pillow safely. For that purpose the crochetted strips work better, of just a long ribbon and lots of corsage pins. I think the kind of bobbin-keeper-in-order-thingy that works best depends on whether you use continentals or midlands bobbins. I totally agree that it depends on what kind of bobbins you use. When you have 300+ bobbins on your pillow, it is crucial that you can stack the bundles, or you'd never be able to manage that number. Thank you all so much for all the information about how you made up roller pillows. I am going to put all the info onto one word doc so I can print them out and read through and see what works best. I think I am going to try to cover the current new one a bit to protect is as much as I can but also consider making up another one which I can have thick wool for longer term. That way the end roller will definately fit the space in the travel bag. It will probably be slightly heavier than now, but not a problem I dont think. For now I will just do a temporary job to try out this little pattern (I need to learn and work at practising with the different type of pillow). Subject: [lace] roller pillows In 2005 I had a fire at my house and lost all of my lace pillows. About 3 years ago I decided to take it up again and started from scratch...literally. My oldest pillow is a homemade roller pillow I take back and forth to work. It's made of a a scrap of foam insulation board for the base with a small wooden cigar box (about 3x5) to hold the roller, and the roller made out of strips of felted wool wrapped around a dowel, pinned and covered with a layer of cotton to keep the fuzz away from the lace. For the felted wool I went to the thrift store on 50% off Monday and bought a thick 100% wool coat for $5.00. (I love thrift stores!!) I threw it in the washer in hot water and ran it through the cycle twice, then threw it in a hot dryer for about an hour. It shrank beautifully. I cut the coat into strips as wide as the dowel and wrapped tightly until it fit in the cigar box. I drilled 2 small holes in the box and use corsage pins to hold the roller in place when I'm working. I've tried other materials for rollers, but I like this type of wool roller the best. It hasn't broken down and when it does I still have a lot of the coat left to make another roller. Peg in Fairview Park OH...where the weather is just the right amount of cool for good sleeping. When I made my Table ribbon I worked it on a roller pillow, with just the start of the pricking pinned down, and the rest hanging out the back. I pinned a plastic bag over that to catch the lace as it came off the roller. The extra pricking just fed through as I turned the roller, and was much easier to work than having it on a cookie pillow, and moving it up frequently. My design had ends, and a centre that were left open for needlelace inserts, so I could not have a continuous pricking. I was surprised how well this worked, and am now going to use the rarely used roller pillow more often - Lappets or neck tie would work well using this method, and I am about to start a wide shaped piece on the roller pillow - to save the Moving Up effort! I thought this idea might help others who might wish to work a longer piece with finished ends. Don't be constrained by having to have a continuous pricking pinned down on the roller, just feed your long pricking through, and let it all hang out the back!
