It is a bit cheaper than the numbers sold in Spain.

I have noticed, on Pinterest, what language you search for things has a
huge impact on how many and what quality you get. It is possible that
entire markets were wiped out, but we may not be feeling it in our own.
As someone who designs, it is very, very sad. It is not the money that
bothers me, it is simply the issue of respecting my intellectual property
as well as my time.

That's what made me order my Binche Kompact pattern: seeing it on someone's
blog. Sadly some ink is fading before I've finished the pattern. OK more
than four years is quite some time to work on it. Then again I have trouble
finding a printing service that would make a cheaper copy for a friend than
ordering a copy at the DKV.

I also once bought a few copies of the Lace Express but can't remember I
ever made a pattern out of it. So I prefer single patterns rather than
magazines or books.

RE: [lace] Lace Express

2017-03-13 Thread Jeanette Fischer
I did read Antje's blog at the time but I wonder if the patterns on
Pinterest really have that big an influence on the sale of the magazine. I
have opened some of these scanned patterns but find them of no use what so
ever. The resolution is so small that once the pattern is enlarged the
lines are so indistinct that the pattern is of no use what so ever. One is
also not sure of the correct size etc etc. Now when I see a nice pattern on
the internet I am much more interested in the origin than even considering
opening the pattern. What have other people found? I also object to the
stealing of patterns and not giving credit etc etc but I find my interest is
more stimulated by seeing the prickings and then buying the book. For us in
South Africa the Lace Express has become very expensive.

RE: [lace] Lace Express

2017-03-13 Thread devonthein
Dear Carrie,
I am glad you have gotten your life back. It is sad that Lace Express is
discontuing publication. But, all is not bleak in the lace world in your area.
As always, the Metro Chapter of the IOLI is just across the river from you,
and the Lost Art Lacers a bit farther away. Lace classes are being given in
several places in New Jersey, and also in Brooklyn at the Textile Arts Center,
505 Carroll St. Also, a new group, the Brooklyn Lace Guild has started up in
Brooklyn. The next meeting is in the evening of March 25, a Saturday. It meets
at the Textile Arts Center. In some ways, the lace scene has never been
brighter.
The Lace magazines of OIDFA, the Lace Guild (England) and the International
Organization of Lace are still being published. In addition there are a number
of internet sites, like the International Organization of Lace’s facebook
site that I maintain. I try to keep people up to date on the activities that
they might like to attend and what the chapters of the IOLI are up to. Check
out LaceNews, as well as a number of facebook sites devoted to Bobbin Lace.
Most importantly, the International Organization of Lace’s yearly convention
will be held in Philadelphia, July 16-22, the first on the east coast for some
time. There are still a few places available in classes.
I think that you will find that the lace community is still available as a
source of fun activities and social contact.

Hi All,

The cute little reindeer I did is from Lace Express 3/2010 - Cotton 50/3, 6
prs. It stands 16.5 cms ( about 6 1/4) tall.

Must spend some more time populating the Data Base a friend has set up for me
to make things easier to find.

Something else which is useful (did not always do it) is to put the source of
the pattern on the back of the pricking.

Discussion was of a picture in Lace Express in which the
relief was reversed, so that lace looked like quilting.

First, it doesn't *beg* the question, it *raises* it.
To beg the question is to assume your conclusion,
as in this old joke:

I saw an angel!
How did you know he was an angel?
He told me.
How do you know he wasn't lying?
Angels don't lie.

The reversal of relief happens because humans have a
hard-wired tendency to assume that light comes from above.
It takes a very strong signal to overcome this tendency,
and even when we can see the light source, things lit from
below look very strange. (Hence the Halloween trick of
holding a light under one's chin in order to look scary.)

When the light in a photograph comes from the top of the
page, a ridge will be light on the side nearer the top of
the page and shadowed on the side nearer the bottom. A
groove will be the other way around.

Our optical system finds reversed relief much easier to
believe than light that comes from below, particularly when
the reversed image makes perfect sense: fine quilting
instead of fine lace in the picture that started this
thread, veins lying on the terrain instead of river valleys
in the case of satellite photographs -- reverse-relief
satellite photographs are very common, because the
convention is to place maps with north at the top, and in
this hemisphere, light nearly always comes from the south.

If the picture makes better sense with the dents dented and
the bumps bumped than the other way around, it may be
possible to freeze it in the correct relief by turning the
page upside down, fixing the correct appearance in your
mind, then turning the page back the right way. But for me,
it snaps back into reversed relief the first time my
attention flickers.

When a picture is lit from the side, the relief may flicker
back and forth, particularly if you don't know whether the
round spots are dents or rivets. Finding a feature that you
are familiar with may make the rest of the picture snap into
focus.

Optical illusions happen because the human optical system
puts out more data than it takes in. The image falling on
the retina is flat; you have to use various tricks to get a
three-dimensional picture of the world out of it -- and
sometimes the simplifying assumptions are wrong.

Hi Jenny et al,

Yep, definitely says 1/06 on the cover. Does anyone else get the optical
illusion effect with the piece illustrated on p37 (a very pleasant torchon
piece) - when you start to look at it it appears as you would expect - ecru
lace taken on a white background - as you continue looking at it, slightly
changing your focal length it looks like it has been 'quilted' on to some
white fabric. All very intriguing.

Happy lacing

Hi Andrea !

An interesting observation! I don't have that publication, but I have noticed
the same effect in other books and magazines. Try this: turn the picture
upside down. Now does it look right? Sometimes the publishers make mistakes,
and turn photos upside down - especially when there isn't something in the
picture to make it obvious which end is up!

But it does beg the question... why does it work that way? I don't have an
answer -

;)
